Whatever connections you guys have at GM. Thank you! Because it's not normal to get videos like this let alone getting to do interview with chief engineers and other top dogs at GM.
I remember one of the chief engineers from the first gen CTS-V project came to give a speech in one of my engineering lectures during college, so that was pretty cool. The one thing that disappointed me, though, was that he was really trying to drive home the point that engineers are easy to replace in a large corporation, so that didn't make me feel good about becoming one.
Engineers at GM and the middle men who allowed media to connect to them as a resource are GOATs. This is the only channel doing this level of deep dive. Fantastic video and much appreciated
Such an amazing video. I think just letting the engineers talk, without an interviewer, works really well. The engine section is just nuts, I am in awe how much passion went into this product.
My closest dealer is already stating they are doing a $100k markup on ZR1s. The dealership model is broken beyond repair, and if politicians were in their pockets, they would have removed the legal barriers preventing direct to consumer sales structures. This NEEDS to happen.

A wonderful thought, too bad I don't think the masses with their mindless Tik Tok scrolling habits have the attention span or ability to absorb details to watch this. I wish they did though. Not only for automotive content, but science, history, philosophy, etc.
As an engineer I have to say that I LOVE the way that you ask questions and display your foundational knowledge towards automotive engineering by asking specific and intentional questions rather than broad. You can tell that the engineers you are speaking to also appreciate it--especially when you were talking to Chris Barber about power management in reference to the e-LSD and PTM.
I love how the gm engineers admitted To using a Porsche and a Ferraris as their benchmark vehicles and the respect it shows they have for Porsche and Ferrari
WOW! This was an incredible piece of automotive journalism! The conversations with the team, the passion that went into this project is captured so beautifully! Awesome!
I love how excited the engineers were that they were not going to be held back by previous projects or engine designs (pushrods). They got to create a clean sheet modern DOHC engine and their efforts really paid off.
One of the reasons why Corvette engineers stuck with the OHV small block rather than DOHC until now is that they wanted to keep the engine profile short in order to keep the hood/front end low in the front engine generations. Now that the engine is behind the cabin, they can have a taller engine.
@@OldRustySteele Mercedes had no issue putting a DOHC TTV8 in a low slung SLS AMG or AMG GT. The main reason why Chevy stuck with pushrods was costs. Upper management did not want Corvette to be spending money on a high performance bespoke engine.
The good old "DOHC is modern, OHV is legacy" meme strikes again 😆 These designs are almost the exact same age (1904 vs 1910), each have their distinct, inherent advantages and drawbacks. GM had many, many DOHC engines before the LT6 and LT7, this is nothing new or exciting to them in itself. What the engineers must have loved was the "no compromise needed" statement, a rare utterance from penny pinchers at the top.
@@OldRustySteele Well mercedes also had similar shapes (Long nose). And big DOHC v8s for a while. The only real reason is that GM didn't want to spend money making a chassis that would allow for them to keep the front end low while having a DOHC v8. Until now
I love my c8 Z06. I know it's a mass produced car but it still feels every bit of my dream car to me. Every time I look over my shoulder and see that LT6 behind me and hear that sound, it just makes me smile. Wish it wasn't winter right now because videos like this make me want to go drive it lol.
@sonicloud7774 that’s surprising. Looks like there were around 10k-15k Ferrari 488 gtb’s made and around 16k C8 Z06’s so far. I think maybe because I see C8 stingrays everywhere.

The excitement the engine engineer has finally being able to talk about his baby is very heartening. Thank you very much for bringing motor journalism with thick details in an easy to understand and enjoyable format. Keep on keeping on!
What a fabulous film! Getting a behind the curtain chat with engineers is always a treat. I love that they admit to bench marking against Ferrari & Porsche, and the fact they have owned various examples too. 1064hp from a stock corvette with a warranty…. What a great time for enthusiasts. Hopefully they can control scummy dealer markups that will then put a black eye on this car.
The dealers are going to be salivating over this car unfortunately. They are back to making normal to less-than-normal margins after the post-Covid boom. It will be interesting to see how much demand there will be for the ZR1 a year after it becomes available. Will it be able to take actual market share from the super car realm? Will GM increase production or keep it more exclusive?
All jokes aside, I love that ever since the ZL1 1LE GM has been putting on some absolute units with maximized rotor face, thick disks, tiny hats, the whole deep dish. Feels like you're actually getting good value compared to the aftermarket.
The quality of the content on this channel is absolutely outstanding. It's no wonder they were granted such exceptional access to the Corvette GM team.
Yeah, you do NOT get this kind of access without some seriously legit credentials. I can't imagine that Mark dreamed of this level of access when he started this channel.
This is pure gold! Thank you for the great insight from the engineers that built this! So great to see Chevy has removed the bean counters from affecting the outcome of an amazing product!
18:00 wonderful to hear this level of detail from an actual engineer. Manifold setup reminds me of the Honda engines, where they have maniturbo's aswell, or at the very least very short tubing from the exhaust, because its right next to the ports.
At around 49:40 onward, he really hits the nail on the head. I think this philosophy expands across their whole line-up from their Camaro 1LE's to their Ct5V / 4V blackwings. He said they're very intentional on keeping the visual, tactile and audible cues that make you the driver, the center of the machine whereas everyone else is trying to isolate you from the machine. You can literally feel it when you drive these modern GM cars from their shifter (if manual), steering, raw torque, throttle response, acceleration and handling. This is why I cancelled my G80 M3 order the day after I test drove the Ct5v blackwing. You can complain about interiors, but GM knows how to make a drivers car.

YESSSS ive been hoping you'll do an engineering video on the zr1! What an amazing video man. You'll never get any of this information literally anywhere else on the internet. So cool :D
Just wanted to comment after finally finding time to watch the whole video. Really appreciate the depth of these engineering videos that you guys put out. They are genuinely more in-depth than actual documentaries that tend to be broader in information, I think because no one else is hitting that sweet spot of technical information while being accessible enough for casual enthusiasts to approach. No one else showcases the actual engineers and just lets them talk about their work, shows their development process, goals, slides of graphs, data, CAD drawings, development parts, etc. Combine that with the quality cinematography and editing as you guys consistently do, and what's left is some of the best automotive journalism, anywhere.
Great Video!!! As a multi-decade GM tech the detail and efforts that went into the vehicle will bring new challenges but also a dream come true for the enthusiasts. When Chevrolet put the world on notice a few years ago, they were not kidding. I hope GM's engineering can continue to pull the GM brands to the top. Love how the group of engineers on this project were given free reign to build the best.
This is perhaps one of the best produced, most methodically thought through car review video I've ever witnessed... and I've watched plenty of Savagegeese's videos. Kudos, guys!
"...full sensory experience. It's not just pure speed." 100%...this is EVs in a nutshell. I always thought the fact that someone could stroll into a showroom and buy a regular, production car with over 700 horsepower, WITH A WARRANTY, is absolutely amazing. And now that gets pushed even further. I don't think we'll actually be able to get one for...like...forever (at least not without paying a CRAZY markup)...but someday, you'll be able to walk in and buy a car with over 1000 horsepower. Regular, production car. With a warranty. What a time to be alive...
What a beast!!! And another should be award-winning documentary from The Geese. Hopefully the car media still won’t be all “yeah, but it’s not a super car because it’s built in the US,” bullshit.
As an owner, i love them, and it would make sense to upload about it, whatever the car is, if they are literally owning and putting a lot of money into for a planned project.
There was SO much awesome info here and you almost never get to see it. It makes the corvette team really look like a super cool team of engineers and drivers, young and old. I especially liked how they clarified they wanted to emulate the 458’s dynamics then make it better it their own way, with as little corporate BS as possible.
Yet again, I cannot believe this level of content is free to us on TH-cam. Thank you Savage Geese for this! The behind the scenes of the engineering is amazing and it’s fascinating to learn all the little nuances that separate the Z06 from the ZR1, particularly the differences made to the engine to get the 4 figure HP number achieved by the engine design team!
i meant to comment earlier because i finished watching this probably an hour after you uploaded it. thank you so much for this content, you guys continue to set the bar extremely high for automotive youtube. i will admit i love the technical aspects of cars slightly more than driving and you guys always deliver on both! i'm looking into a C8 Z06 next year possibly, depends on the market but yeah going from a GT350 to a Z06 will be really sick, not sure if i'll go anywhere else after that haha
This is a great video, tons of depth and no nonsense as usual with your labor of love projects. Thank you very much, Jack and Mark. You should definitely be above 1M subscribers at this point, here's to hoping you will finally get there in 2025 🥂
This video is exactly why I waited until Savagegeese had produced the C8 ZR1 special. There were a lot of other channels that had a ZR1 video on their channel, but I knew they would be pale comparisons to Savagegeese. Well done guys, this is first class and much better than any of the former commercial TV producers.
Really fantastic video! Love it when the team gets these conversations with the people who do the work behind the scenes. Always worth the watch. The channel's video breadth is second to none. Short reviews, mid(and longer)-length comparisons, and these deep-dives of just people who love cars. *Chef's kiss. Engineers and managers from all over the world just talking about what they love. *Chef's kiss (again)
what an amazing piece of content aimed a really dissecting the engineering achievement that is the ZR-1... I just hope the dealers don't ruin this for everyone.
I’ve never been a corvette guy but that started to change when I had access to a C7 ZR1. I’ve been kinda keeping up with the C8 and I’m actually excited for the C8 ZR1 enough to consider investing in one
Amazing, Amazing, Amazing! I don't know which I should thank more: Chevrolet for the C8 and its iterations or, The world for SavageGeese. Either way, Very Well Done. P.S. - I've now watched the C8 Zo6 video 10-15 times...
Wow, the best info on YT, thank you wrangling the GM development team. The process is as interesting as the final product. Amazing that upper management not only signed off but required “clean sheet” for development with todays legal liability. Well done gents, we all want one!
Watching this as I walk home in the middle of the night from my works Christmas party, too many drinks deep and this drops. Gonna be sobering me up on the way home. Epic vid as always Mark and Jack!
Honestly. I’m not a corvette lover, particularly. I’m also not an engineer. I could not look away from this video. So well structured, interesting, and engaging. Props to the interviewees for explaining stuff well too!
To clarify regarding integrated exhaust manifold. He means the Turbine housing in built together as 1 piece with the exhaust manifold. Not the cheap way where the exaust manifold in built in the cylinder head. Very well done GM. 10+/10
Amazing video, all the engineers explaining the details about this masterpiece was a pleasure to listen to. Correct me if I'm wrong but the only small mistake was when at 28:15 he said that the 12.5:1 compression ratio is unique to lt7 - I believe he meant to say lt6.
You guys are wonderful. Spanks for the future memories. Edit: That final sneak preview of what it's like to drive is pretty intense. 90 to 120 like its literally nothing, but the cabin sound is hopefully a WIP.

I greatly respect the opinions of Henry Catchpole. Top Gear in its prime was unrivalled, but today we are so very spoiled for automotive journalism of all stripes. The motorcycle content is amazing these days too.
These are the best car videos for education, enthusiasts and promotion. We see a car as the finished product of all of this work will make you proud of of what your hard earned money has gone towards.
YESSSS ive been hoping you'll do an engineering video on the zr1! What an amazing video man. You'll never get any of this information literally anywhere else on the internet. So cool :D
MERICA, this is what the world needs, Corvette showing that too much power is still not enough power.
The level of information, story telling and interview is unbelievably good, thanks for bringing these to TH-cam!
Jack will have to get another job to afford his new C8 ZR1...Corvette: A true American legend. A truly wonderful video for a great car.
What a time to be alive...
i mean the model s plaid and lucid air sapphier have 1000+hp and they're family sedans
@ShaiyanHossain ...yea...and? That's kinda my point. lol
@@ShaiyanHossain whoosh
@@rmp5s you don't need to wait "someday" that day is today. Also theres more visceral cars that can give you better experiences for c8 zr1 money
@@ShaiyanHossain My God, dude...read it again. A few times if you need to. You'll get it eventually. Maybe.
Love these engineering deep dives and hearing what motivates the guys building these things
What a beast!!! And another should be award-winning documentary from The Geese. Hopefully the car media still won’t be all “yeah, but it’s not a super car because it’s built in the US,” bullshit.
It outperforms many "supercars"
They build things in the US? I thought America needed to be great again.
Holy fuck. It’s not another GR Corolla video.
Or Porsche video! 😮
or bmw video!
It’s a decent engine but it’s no B58.
As an owner, i love them, and it would make sense to upload about it, whatever the car is, if they are literally owning and putting a lot of money into for a planned project.
@@michaelw6277are you serious or its a joke ??!!
This channel is awesome. I'd say «you've come a long way», but you've always been on top of your game, it seems. So, congrats I guess!
I felt like I was in a automotive class just watching this (good thing). I enjoyed the video.
I felt like I was best in class watching this automotive video.
Savagegeese basically got Chevy to teach us how to make a Corvette ZR1, and I love them for it
There was SO much awesome info here and you almost never get to see it. It makes the corvette team really look like a super cool team of engineers and drivers, young and old. I especially liked how they clarified they wanted to emulate the 458’s dynamics then make it better it their own way, with as little corporate BS as possible.
I love these long format indepth vehicle breakdowns
Yet again, I cannot believe this level of content is free to us on TH-cam. Thank you Savage Geese for this! The behind the scenes of the engineering is amazing and it’s fascinating to learn all the little nuances that separate the Z06 from the ZR1, particularly the differences made to the engine to get the 4 figure HP number achieved by the engine design team!
This is a wild deep dive. Thank you. Something to be said when they said nope to the 488 lol
This is a gem of a channel. So grateful to be alive for this.
His comment about "it's like watching a movie without the sound on" may be the best I've heard against electric cars to date...
Great production and better information than when Emelia Hartford did the Z06.
This is how a team is supposed to work!
i meant to comment earlier because i finished watching this probably an hour after you uploaded it. thank you so much for this content, you guys continue to set the bar extremely high for automotive youtube. i will admit i love the technical aspects of cars slightly more than driving and you guys always deliver on both! i'm looking into a C8 Z06 next year possibly, depends on the market but yeah going from a GT350 to a Z06 will be really sick, not sure if i'll go anywhere else after that haha
This is a great video, tons of depth and no nonsense as usual with your labor of love projects. Thank you very much, Jack and Mark. You should definitely be above 1M subscribers at this point, here's to hoping you will finally get there in 2025 🥂
48:44 -- love the estop button on the dash. That definitely R&D mode.
3:16 Ice Man. Nice Top Gun call back guys. 👍🏻👍🏻
One of the best videos you put out from a technical standpoint, your videos keep getting better and better 🗣 🔥 🔥‼
These are guys that understand what real drivers want. Other brands should maybe watch this and say “copy that”
Sf90 is the benchmark for the zr1, thats no joke thoose are huge shoes to fill good job gm.
"It's awesome that you got actual Corvette engineers to talk about and explain the process. Great video!"
TY Gents. Amazing video. Really enjoyed it. What an accomplishment.
I'll keep saying it, you guys by far make the best Car review videos I've ever seen!!! Keep it going!!!
Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!
I don't know which I should thank more: Chevrolet for the C8 and its iterations or, The world for SavageGeese.
Either way, Very Well Done.
P.S. - I've now watched the C8 Zo6 video 10-15 times...
Thanks man!
Wow, the best info on YT, thank you wrangling the GM development team. The process is as interesting as the final product.
Amazing that upper management not only signed off but required “clean sheet” for development with todays legal liability.
Well done gents, we all want one!
Hush was the perfect song for this car. Great choice!
Watching this as I walk home in the middle of the night from my works Christmas party, too many drinks deep and this drops. Gonna be sobering me up on the way home. Epic vid as always Mark and Jack!
good job on the lighting of engine and tire, felt like i was right there with you guys . 👌👌
Honestly. I’m not a corvette lover, particularly. I’m also not an engineer.
I could not look away from this video. So well structured, interesting, and engaging.
Props to the interviewees for explaining stuff well too!
53 minutes of perfection
To clarify regarding integrated exhaust manifold. He means the Turbine housing in built together as 1 piece with the exhaust manifold. Not the cheap way where the exaust manifold in built in the cylinder head. Very well done GM. 10+/10
This was fascinating & entertaining. Thank you all for putting this together. This channel is a very special place.
Amazing video, all the engineers explaining the details about this masterpiece was a pleasure to listen to.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the only small mistake was when at 28:15 he said that the 12.5:1 compression ratio is unique to lt7 - I believe he meant to say lt6.
Thank you finest gentlemen for this incredible award winning film. I take a bow
Legitimately one of the best TH-cam videos ive ever watched.
Best vid ever and that’s what I had thought about Z06 v GT3, but this is even better!
Thank you for making this level of car content. It gets no better than this. Please never stop.
You guys are wonderful.
Spanks for the future memories.
Edit: That final sneak preview of what it's like to drive is pretty intense. 90 to 120 like its literally nothing, but the cabin sound is hopefully a WIP.
Please never stop making these documentaires.
