Tim Thomerson, like Jeffrey Combs, was the Bruce Campbell of Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, back in the struggling B and C-movie theatrical days before Full Moon’s direct-videos. 😄
He knew how to play the right blend of action and self-aware tongue-in-cheek parody that made Zone Troopers and even Dollman watchable. The sequels suffered when Band thought he now had a “franchise”, but the first movie still has a back-of.-the-rental-shelf cult fun to it.

This is one of the great B movies and its easy to forgive the many plot holes. I believe it was Hitchcock who more or less said that if you're questioning the movie then it's the fault of the film for not keeping you fully engaged. Trancers keeps you entertained and you're able to easily enjoy the film and overlook the plot holes. Merry Christmas everyone.

Maybe McNulty's ancestor (the little girl) was an orphan, so her parents weren't her biological parents.
BTW, I really liked that they got the same actress to play her/him as a teenager in Trancers II. I doubt most people would have been able to tell if they had recast the role, but they went to the trouble of getting the same person to reprise the character.

  • @varanid9

Merry X-Mas, Robin! The reason you didn't dislike Jack Deth is because Tim Thomerson seems a likeable fellow and the script, while making him out to be over-the-top macho, doesn't make him "toxic". In fact, the film seems to use him to lampoon such characters. Full Moon's "Dollman" series featuring Thomerson does that as well.

Back in the 80's I used to hang out with a friend whose father videotaped EVERY movie that came on TV. I remember seeing the title on a VHS, popping it in, and being taken in by both the cheesy sci-fi setting and Thomerson's performance. For the longest time afterward I would get this film confused with Blade Runner, and any time I went to play 'guns' my character would be a mix of Rick Deckard and Jack Deth named Deckard Deth rofl.

The 12 reasons Christmas matters to the plot of Die Hard.
    1. Christmas was the reason building security was laxed allowing the thieves their initial entry to the Nakatomi Plaza.
    2. Christmas was the reason that police activity near the building was limited to one officer who would normally be on desk duty.
    3. The Christmas party was the reason the hostages were all conveniently there to serve as a distraction.
    4. Holly's presence at the Christmas party and the accidental invite brings McClane to LA on that fateful evening.
    5. Allowing for the many law enforcement agencies response times was an integral part of the plan. Christmas was the best time for the heist.
    6. McClane secures the weapon that he uses against Hans with Christmas wrapping tape.
The many lines of dialogue that are made significantly better because of Christmas!
    7. Hans - “It’s Christmas, Theo, It’s The Time Of Miracles, So Be Of Good Cheer.” Bonus: You asked for miracles, Theo, I give you the F.B.I..
    8. Hans - “Now I Have A Machine Gun. Ho Ho Ho.” (written by McClane, but read aloud by Hans)
    9. Theo - “Not A Creature Was Stirring, Except The Four A******* Coming In The Rear.”
    10. McClane - “Welcome To The Party, Pal!” Bonus: “I Got Invited To The Christmas Party By Mistake. Who Knew?”
    11. McClane - “This Is Christmas Music?” - This of course led to Die Hard's very merry and official theme song, Christmas In Hollis by RUN DMC.
    12. Argyle - “If This Is Their Idea Of Christmas, I Gotta Be Here For New Year’s!”
Also: Little Girl McNulty could have been orphaned and living with foster parents or her actual parents could have been squids.
Ah, what the H***. It's Christmas! - Captain Carmine Lorenzo (Die Hard 2 : Also A Christmas Movie)

Was having a movie night "back in the day" with a few friends, and we grabbed this one off the video store shelf "just because"..And I LOVED IT!
Tim Thomerson has just the right amount of "snark" to be a charmingly cheesy, without descending into annoying. Helen Hunt being sweet as can be..
And then you add in "The McNulty" factor. The "You're out of control, Deth!" police chief placed into the body of a 12 year old girl..Priceless!
The story itself is mediocre, but it's got some decent action scenes, and the music score works.
Hope you do some of the sequels in the future, Robin... Merry Christmas! 🎄

As an actor, Tim Thomerson can play both dramatic and comedic roles, but he was tailor-made to be an 80's action hero. There is one scene in the tanning salon which uses some of the same dialogue from "Lady In The Lake" (1946), clearly a tribute to Chandler's Philip Marlowe, which Thomerson delivers in the same gritty way.

That “more recent film” did have the one caveat in that the original person was otherwise going to be dead (along with everyone else) and the protagonist did not have any choice in the matter. But I was thinking… so, how is this guy who has basically dropped into a completely different life going to deal with meeting his new parents or the fact that all the people in his old life are still around but to them, he is dead.

But the first five, particularly the 1st, 4th, and 5th. Awesome! Full Moon kept trying to make Doll Man a thing, but in my mind Jack Deth is by far the best Thomerson character! And it IS fun how the movie kept pointing out it's own plot holes. You have to give them points for at least knowing they were there if not how to fill them.

this series is the definition of stupid fun, and it was self aware in ways that I loved it so much - they want to remake the series but I don't have faith in the remakes.

    • @julietfischer5056
      @julietfischer5056 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Remakes are always iffy, no matter the reasons for them. The makers can hit all the right notes and still fail to engage the audience for one reason or another. Or they can completely misunderstand the original and be left scratching their heads as to why.
I'm not a fan of remakes, mostly because so many seem to be attempts to cash in on the originals, but there are some that I like. Either they modernize appropriately, or take the elements and make new use of them.
Adaptations of books, graphic novels, plays, and radio shows are another matter. Unless a studio decides that they should remake their adaptation rather than go back to the source material (looking at you, Disney).

God, I bloody love Trancers! So does Neil Gaiman (he told me on Twitter). And Kim Newman called it "The B-Movie of the 80's". Yes, it's got a fair few contrivances, but not as many genuine plot holes as you'd think. Plus, the energy and inventiveness more than make up for them. And I love the "Nice tan; very Christmassy" line, which is lifted straight from Raymond Chandler, if I remember correctly. As for the sequels? Yes, we needed the short from Pulse Pounders, because it's brilliant, and while the others drop in quality quickly, all but the last one star Tim Thomerson, so they're not a total loss.

Not the same and I'm sure not the film you're thinking of, but Wolverine in "Days of Future Past" changes the past so that when his consciousness returns to the present, it effectively kills his the version of himself that had lived 50 years in the new timeline.
