Good video. I would recommend looking through these sources too if you haven't. Read the Chris Farley show biography, and his manager Bernie Brillstein's "Where did I go right?" Rogue media network uploaded a interview with Tom Farley. He talks a bit about the time around when Black sheep was filmed around the 48:30 minute mark.
I met Chris Farley 3 months before he died at the Planet Hollywood in Chicago. Nice guy. I asked what he was working on next and he said an animated movie called "Shrek." I remember thinking what a weird sounding word, and didn't understand what it meant.

This video brings up an interesting point, that without this dark role as a stepping stone, we may not have gotten Carey's later dramatic roles. Considering Eternal Sunshine is one of my favorite movies of all time, this brings me a whole new level of appreciation for the Cable Guy.
Hilarious story. I had never been to Midievel Times, until about 2017. I asked my waiter for a fork, SO EXCITED to finally be able to say "THE LINE", and the waiter said, "Okay". TWENTY YEARS of waiting, and build-up...all done. My friends & I all just about died laughing.
Man, thank you for putting this together. I remember being 13 and hearing all the swirling rumors and issues they had making this movie. I loved it from day 1. It's still one of my all-time favorites.
I started working as a cable service technician in 2015 it is really funny how many rules were specifically made due to this movies influence. Like if a customer invites you to come hang out at their house after work your not allowed to do that or there are a series of hoops you have to jump through first for example.
This movie was underrated at the time and it is a classic. There’s nothing quite like how it mixes in a crazy friend with tones of sadness and drama in a comedic package.

@SydneyDrums The worst/best part is that the Mask should have been a lot more like The Cable Guy…. But the studio thought that the Comic version of The Mask was way too violent, so they wanted a more goofy PG version.

Awesome video man! In Living Color was such an underrated sketched comedy show. The Ivory Wayans family were so talented in their political/black commentary. Great idea for a future video 🔥 James Carrey work in In Living Color was so high energy and you can see the potential he had back. Anyone who hasnt watched In Living Color should def check it out. It's my number 2 sketch comedy show, with Bob and David being #1.
I saw the movie three times in theatres...I brought everyone that would go with me. I thought exactly what Jim said, that his movies were growing with me as a fan. Getting darker as I grew up. I loved Cable guy then, I loved it on my taped-from-HBO vhs and I love it now.
Happy new year! I'll get my Big Gulp and sit down to watch this one day 🍿🍿 Funny how The Cable Guy had an alternate lighter version whereas The Truman Show had an alternate MUCH DARKER version!
I went to work for Sierra Online a computer gaming company in Washington state about the time The Cable Guy came out. I’d not even heard of the movie. I became friends with a few guys at the company and we’d go to lunch everyday. They were constantly quoting the movie and cracking each other up. I rented the movie and loved it! It was later I realized critics hated it. I was confused. I thought it was great and knew others really liked it as well.
This was the only comedy movie that made me really feel uneasy. I've definitely extended basic courtesy just to have people take too much and encroach on my life. If you saw Chip and didn't immediately think of someone weird in your own life, then you're that person.
I never met Chris Farley in person. But I had one of those “almost lifetime” dreams where me and Chris were best friends. I had long conversations with him and we would goof around his house. It was like we were brothers not friends. It was a gnarly experience.
.......WHAT?! STOP. I am so glad I hit ctrl+f and searched "Chris Farley" to see what others said. ....I shit you not. When I was around 10 years old, I was having this regular-ass dream.. and I was having lunch in my elementary school cafeteria, and I noticed Chris Farley was playing the role of our janitor (who was a heavyset guy, so I think my brain just made that connection). He was sort of just in the background, and I didn't really pay much attention to him, just one of those "Huh, that's weird" sort of things that happen in dreams... but after I went to head outside to recess, Chris stopped me, and for the first and only time in my life, it got SO realistic, and so personal, and he warned me about using drugs.. and reminded me to be careful and said "I just don't want you to turn out like I did". Chris and I share a birthday, and my birth name is Thomas (aka Tommy) and I was born in 1995 when the movie Tommy Boy came out (but a month and a half before the movie came out)... I don't think I even knew we had the same birthday at the time.
The way you describe it is SPOT ON. It was almost life-like, and it felt like we had like a 10 minute conversation! It's like "dream-time" stopped working, and everything was so realistic.
Ok. I went to see this in theaters. I was a huge Jim Carrey fan. BOTTOM LINE: They totally marketed this film wrong. They made it seem like Jim's previous hits. If they had of marketed correctly...it would have been a hit. I remember watching it and realizing that it was not as it was portrayed beforehand. Of course we were initially disappointed because it wasn't what we were told. It they had of set the viewers expectations correctly, it would have been more successful. Because it's a good movie. Just watched it again a couple weeks ago. It was not as advertised which created disappointment.
Back in the days of Blockbuster, and Hollywood Video.... The Cable Guy was always one of my favorite VHS covers to see in the isles. Such an iconic poster.
Ever since I was a kid when this came out, this was a hit for me. I was only surprised growing up with the upbringing of the internet and starting to learn how so much people hated it. It was hard for me to uderstand.
I love this movie. I quote it all the time. I was terrified for weeks because of the nightmare scene. And I still watch it regularly. But damn, what I would give to see a Chris Farley version YOUR VIDEOS ARE AMAZING!!
it's insane to hear the history of this movie and thinking about who was actually involved in it. i watched it around when it came out, i was about 11-12. i distinctly remember being disappointed in it somewhat because i was expecting, and it was advertised as, another goofy Jim Carrey flick and as any kid that age, at that time, i loved those movies. However i ended up watching it a ton of times at home over the next few years since we had illegal cable and i saw it a ton on PPV and HBO. I developed a love and taste for the Cable Guy, to the point that it still crosses my mind occasionally to this day, and it gave seed to my love for Medieval Times (i didnt know this place existed before the movie). Jim's performance definitely opened my eyes to him as something beyond slapstick comedian, Truman Show to this day is one of my favorite movies of all time. At the time i had no idea who Ben Stiller or Judd Apatow was, but as the years went on i became a big fan of their movies, calling some of them my all time faves. I even love Leslie Mann but never realized she was in this movie (i havent seen in forever and i never liked her character in Cable Guy). I had no idea either of them was involved in this movie and it blows my mind seeing my comedic evolution over the decades being guided by a lot of the same people throughout the years who all knew and loved each other. it's a warm feeling and i feel connected to them somewhat now. maybe i should hook them up with some free cable. PS, I hated Black Sheep, back then and today.
I remember seeing this in the theater when it first released. Me and my buddy laughed and howled like idiots thru whole movie. Admittedly we were pretty much the only among the other folks in the theater that were carrying on like this. It seemed so odd to me then and STILL does to this day that The Cable Guy is considered one of Jim Careys "worst performances"!?! I think this was at the time(and still basicly is...) Careys best comedic tone. Its almost as if the audience at the time was disappointed and confused that Jim Carey didnt at any point resort to bending over to make his ass-speak and make bad puns!? Even to this day, I still find situations to throw in one of the many quoteable lines from this classic.
Absolutely love Chris Farley! Black Sheep is kinda nostalgic for me and I also admit I love Beverly Hills Ninja as well lol. I still enjoy The Cable Guy we got even as a kid! Great video!
I am a complete herk hoff... This movie actually scared me as a child when it came out but I still somehow knew that was amazing in itself because there were no dinosaurs, aliens, etc blowing things up. Just the cable guy.
Great video, man. Sometimes, reviews tend to be long and dragged out. But yours was concised and to the point which I appreciate being I have adhd. It kept my attention. I just subscribed and look forward to more.
Ben Stiller and Judd apatow also worked on Heavyweights together, it subverted expectations in a similar manner, sporting a dark tone and many phallic references. I really wish there was a full cut of that movie out there somewhere, Disney had it trimmed down because it was so far off their kid friendly expectations.
Cable Guy is a classic! I liked it when I was a teenager but when I watched it again as an adult and now as a 40 year old it’s just a classic film. Great script and actors.
Cable Guy is one of Jim Careys best films. We just just weren't ready for it back then. Its a time capsule type of movie that holds up and is directed really well, it has a great cast too.
Just as a bit of trivia about Jim Carey's character. "Ernie Douglas" is the name of one of the sons in the TV show, "My Three Sons" from 1963 to 1972, and the nickname, "Chip", is the name of one of the other sons. It's a play on the fact that he was raised in front of a TV set, obviously watching lots of My Three Sons. And actor that played Ernie Douglas, was played by Barry Livingston, who went on to be the disabled guy in Horrible Bosses that Colin Farrell wants fired.
They will do this. A fun trick to play is to distract your friend then slide some plastic cutlery by them and flag the server down. They'll stop the show and spotlight your friend and mock them. LOL
This movie really grew on me. The first time I saw it was really young and it scared me. When I was a teenager I thought it was the best thing ever. And now as an adult it's great and terrifying.
I love Farley but Carrey was on a different level imo. Carrey had already shown he could do some darker (uneasy) stuff with the Mask, Batman, and some of the scenes in Dumb & Dumber. He was perfect for Cable Guy and to this day, I don't know of anyone who could've pulled off scenes like the basketball scene or the karaoke scene other than Carrey. To answer the question, it's one of the best movies ever. The soundtrack, tone, and performances from everyone are just so good. You get to see some faces of guys who would go one to be HUGE in the coming years too, like Jack Black and Owen Wilson. Having said that, I wish Farley would've lived on to do Shrek. I think he was perfect for that. Myers still knocked it out of the park but I still think Farley would've been an even better Shrek.
Cable guy was so far ahead of its time - so many jokes per minute throughout the movie and I think Jim Carreys brilliance/madness was legendary and I’ve only become a bigger fan of it as I’ve gotten older

Hahaha hell ya little stuff like this is what makes it great..I love all the old movie and TV references that go over ur head if u don't "watch to much tv"
Yes!!! Hilariously subtle acting from KG of Tenacious D!
Did they have Pepsi?
@@RobVanDelay_WholeFnContest Yes. AND forks
The Cable Guy is very underrated. Had a tremendous cinematic arc. Dark yet hilarious. Expert pacing!!! Love this movie.
Now I want to see a version of this movie with Chris Farley as the Cable Guy and David Spade as Steven, with Heather Locklear as Robin.
No. Farley would be way better without all the typical snl partners. Would have given him a chance to show his serious side
@@doctorfeinstone6524If ain't broke etc.
@@doctorfeinstone6524it would have been Farley Spade though. No way they wouldn’t have done that.
@@doctorfeinstone6524no and stfu
Man, thank you for putting this together. I remember being 13 and hearing all the swirling rumors and issues they had making this movie. I loved it from day 1. It's still one of my all-time favorites.
One of the most quotable films in my circles of friends even decades later.
Love it.
My brother and I think The Cable Guy is not only one of Jim's best films, but top ten comedies of all time.
Me and my brother agree.
Agree also
its so misunderstood
Yea….definitely not my guy
So it's safe to say I'm not the only person running around yelling "Cablo Gooblah!" 🤣
This has been one of my favorite dark comedies since it released! Great video and way more details surrounding this film than I ever knew.
Ever since I first saw this movie. When I was little, it's always been one of my favorites. It's such a great movie.
Props to Farley for the cartwheels.
Those critics were harsh, black sheep is one of my favorite Chris Farley movies.
There's not many so they are all faves
Chris thought it was actually terrible and this video didn't cover that well at all. He didn't think the script was even decent.
@derekcunningham6032the poster does have a video all about Black Sheep as well which goes into the detail you may be looking for.
I remember seeing 'James Carrey' the first time in The Dead Pool, a sequel to Dirty Harry!
You mean the white guy from In Living Color?
Two years before that, he had a supporting part in Francis Ford Coppola's "Peggy Sue Got Married".
🎶 _Welcome to the Jungle!_
@@crnkmnky We got fun and games!
Watching him lip sync was one thing. SPOILERS. Seeing him murdered was another O_o
His first movie was called Earth girls are easy ....he played an alien 👽👾👽
@@pepeshadilay He had a few roles before that, such as _Once Bitten_ (1985) and _The Dead Pool_ (Dirty Harry 5) in 1988. _Earth Girls_ was supposed to come out before _Dead Pool,_ but it was delayed until 1989.
_The Dead Pool_ was a smaller dramatic role, but *a lot* more people saw it, and he got to speak and do more "Jim Carrey" stuff:
th-cam.com/video/iPD00fmaxhY/w-d-xo.html
I saw it at the theater and was totally in love with it. The place was packed, and everyone enjoyed the film.
Watched all this and literally forgot this was about Chris Farley during the Jim Carrey portion.
TH-cam randomly suggested this video, and it did not disappoint! Looking forward to going through the rest of your uploads! Keep up the good work!
the problem with cable guy and jim carey was that fans were expecting another silly, goofy, dumbed down comedy, which wasn't the dark humor hilariousness of the cable guy. i loved it, it was great!
10:39 i wonder how many people thought ewww, while i thought it was hilarious in a "oh no you didn't just do that kinda of way".
Exactly what I always tell people who don't like it.. they were expecting another Ace Ventura or the Mask
@SydneyDrums The worst/best part is that the Mask should have been a lot more like The Cable Guy…. But the studio thought that the Comic version of The Mask was way too violent, so they wanted a more goofy PG version.
That was a cool video //////// i’m glad to see things like this since i saw these movies as a kid , it’s really interesting . makes me think about all the other movies i saw too
That Medieval Knights/Star Trek fight is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my entire life 😂
The screaming noises and facial expressions Jim makes are hysterical in that scene.
I love the Cable Guy. Both as a kid when it came out, and moreso now as an adult. My fav Jim Carrey movie
What a great time capsule. You presented it clearly and thoroughly. I’m a fan
I think his best overall film. Exceptionally well done and was just what I needed back in 1996
Amazing video
The Cable Guy is one of my top 10 favorite films of all time and I always love learning more about it
the cable guy is deffo one of my favourite comedies
A great deep dive for sure and it's always fascinating to hear just how fast things can change in Hollywood films.
Loved this video! Cable Guy was a frequent play on the VHS back in those days!
I watches this as a 90s kid. My friends and i loved it!
The Cable guy is a work of genius, so many moments can go over your head , so many references, and Jim Carey is at the top of his game !
Both Bob and David are also in The Cable Guy as minor characters, so it's a bit of a Mr. Show / In Living Color / Ben Stiller Show crossover.
Cable Guy is brilliant. Never gets old.
I so happen to like Black Sheep and it was really hilarious. Yeah wasn’t popular of Farley movies but still a pretty good movie.
Black sheep is a great movie
I still watch Black Sheep a couple times a year, Beverly Hills Ninja is another one I can watch anytime.
@@RoCkShaDoWWaLkEr those were the 3 movies tht made me love farley and his humor at an early age
It sucked.
@@nsasupporter7557you should repeat this 50 more times 🙄
I saw the movie three times in theatres...I brought everyone that would go with me. I thought exactly what Jim said, that his movies were growing with me as a fan. Getting darker as I grew up. I loved Cable guy then, I loved it on my taped-from-HBO vhs and I love it now.
Happy new year!
I'll get my Big Gulp and sit down to watch this one day 🍿🍿
Funny how The Cable Guy had an alternate lighter version whereas The Truman Show had an alternate MUCH DARKER version!
Hell yeah, first time I’ve seen a deep dive on this movie. Keep em coming!
Phil Hartman would have been INCREDIBLE in this film.
Gone too soon. Hilarious man.
Im a huge Farley fan but I like how this played out with Jim Carrey. Its not just my fav Carrey movie but of my fav comedies in general.
Spade and farley as the main characters would have been crazy
It's so interesting you word it that way... I do too! That's how it felt!
It's possibly his best film. A recent rewatch really suprised me.
The Cable Guy is a friggin classic
It's my favorite Jim movie. I just connected with it. I watch it every year.
Cable Guy is my favorite comedy movie from the 90’s. Just plain great.
I love this movie. I quote it all the time. I was terrified for weeks because of the nightmare scene. And I still watch it regularly. But damn, what I would give to see a Chris Farley version
YOUR VIDEOS ARE AMAZING!!
it's insane to hear the history of this movie and thinking about who was actually involved in it. i watched it around when it came out, i was about 11-12. i distinctly remember being disappointed in it somewhat because i was expecting, and it was advertised as, another goofy Jim Carrey flick and as any kid that age, at that time, i loved those movies.
I Love The Cable Guy. I still maintain that this is one of Jim Carreys Best films in my opinion.
I quote this movie weekly still. My favorite? "You didn't have forks, but you had Pepsi?"
"Dude, i have a lot of tables."
❤❤❤❤
“ I learned the facts of life…. From watching the facts of life” I loved cable guy. RIP Chris Farley.
Black Sheep 🐑 was awesome we laughed our butts off in the theater! I was 12 back then we thought it was hilarious 😂
Cable Guy is a classic! I liked it when I was a teenager but when I watched it again as an adult and now as a 40 year old it’s just a classic film. Great script and actors.
I loved the cable guy from day one. I was 11 when it came out and didn't get all the humor, but i liked it. I STILL love it to this day.
I can only hear the song “somebody to love” in Jim carry’s voice from this movie.
14:24 wasn't the "head crush with a big rock in the rain" scene also in Cape Fear? (the Robert DeNiro version.)
This was such a fascinating topic. Very thorough. Thanks for the video!
I appreciate it, also nice gato.
Cable Guy is one of Jim Careys best films. We just just weren't ready for it back then. Its a time capsule type of movie that holds up and is directed really well, it has a great cast too.
The cable guy is one of my favorite comedies of all time
Cable Guy with Chris Farley and David Spade...sound like a good time, honestly.
That's was very entertaining and informative. Thank you for making this
Thank you dude 🙏
Thanks for putting the work you put into this.
Dude I totally had forgotten about the Owen Wilson and “Jazz Man”! That is one of the funniest scenes ever. “Skeetdly bop….. Skeeeedle Bop”!
Salt peanuts, Salt peanuts...
I can’t believe this movie was panned back in the day!! When I was a teen I must have seen it like a dozen times on cable
I absolutely love Cable Guy. It's great and it really shows another layer to Carrey's acting
I like when the guy asked for utensils at medieval times they told him their were none he said no utensils but that had Pepsi 😂
I would have loved to see Carey and Farley make a solo movie. They would have easily have fed off each other and that would done great for 2 alumnis
16:40 Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. one of my favorite movies of all time!!!!!
