- Spurs had great form going into this one - they were unbeaten in their last 16 fixtures. They had also reached the final without conceding a single goal (the first time that had happened). Could they now stop Liverpool retaining the trophy that they had won 12 months earlier? Ultimately not, as Ronnie Whelan, in his first game at Wembley, was to have an afternoon to remember. Brian Moore commentates.
R I p Ray Clemence Legend for both clubs and a great commentator in Brian Moore iin the days where 1 commentater was all you needed
Brian Moore was very good commentator during the World of Sport years
Happy Days. Ronnie Whelans breakthrough season. What a gem. He did it 12 months later against Manchester United 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Last night Curtis Jones channeled Whelan's genius against the blue and white Smurfs.
Have to say my favourite Liverpool team. I was thirteen and totally in love with football and Liverpool.
I was also 13 in 1981 and I had to endure this final on the radio. But it inspired me to never miss a final again and I experienced my first visit to Wembley, the following year - when we beat Man United 2-1
What a great young footballer Ronnie was. Unsung hero of that early 80's team.
TheMerseyBoy he was great
He was grossly under rated. But the managers knew how effective he was... Always got back his place once he was back from injury... Consistency was his game
In those early days “ The Mersey boy”, I thought he got loads of deserved credit as he was such an exciting footballer and did extraordinary things. He and Ian Rush absolutely revitalised the team in the 1981/82 season. I think it was in later years that he was unsung when he did the job of sweeping up around of the defence as Souness had done in a more muscular way before.
The players always said that he did things in training that none of them could match. In the early days we used to see them on a Saturday as in the League cup finals of 82 and 83 and the Championship clincher against Tottenham in 82 amongst othersbut after that he did an equally brilliant but less spectacular job. He was still capable of laying on the winner as he did for Ian Rush in the 1986 FA Cup final.
Ronnie was absolute class, the winning goal he scored against utd in the final of the same competition in extra time was outstanding.
Those were the days when The Football League Cup Final was played on a Saturday at 3pm (no live t.v. just recorded highlights on the Sunday afternoon). That Liverpool F.C. all red kit lasted for 18 years - November 1964 to May 1976 the O neck and August 1976 to May 1982 the V neck, from then on they varied the design of the kit.
The pace was incredible, the full 120 mins. Yet, the players (LFC) were so good that they still were able to do magic with the ball. Shooting was much better than nowadays. No weak links at the time!
No diving..no rolling around faking it..no bull..just great football.. how Liverpool dominated the 1980's ....
@David David Although I much preferred Motson and Davies on BBC to Brian Moore. Moore seemed to shout and get much more excited in games when there often wasn't anything to be excited about.
Two great teams here. The Liverpool equaliser was the first goal Spurs conceded in that year's competition. The defeat was their first ever at Wembley. There was talk of the Quadruple that year, after success in the previous season's FA Cup, and Burkinshaw's over ambitious desire to "make people stop talking about the double team." The squad was too small for that, of course. I always felt that this team was capable of beating anybody, certainly in the country, and perhaps even in Europe, but the increasing volume of games, injury and sheer tiredness got to them. They retained the Cup, came fourth I think in the league, and lost heavily in the fog in Munich in the Cup Winners' Cup semis. But undoubtedly a great team, possibly the best Spurs set up I remember.
My memory! I've just looked at the 81-82 Cup Winner's cup and it was Barcelona who narrowly put us out. Yet I distinctly remember us losing 4-1 to Bayern Munich in a semi - final in atrocious fog. Well, there you go.
Oh, that's it. Checking again, I found we lost heavily to Bayern the following year. That was the year Fergie won his first European trophy with Aberdeen, beating Real Madrid in the final.
MadMax382 it was a very good Tottenham side. Great players. It took Liverpool’s greatest ever team to beat them.
People don't realise how good 80s footballers were , some of the passes and touches herd are unreal
Ryan M totally agree. Great talent on that pitch. English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, two Argentinians and a Zimbabwean.
It's the sheer speed of the play with no play acting too. Pure excitement.
@Ryan M : You should include the 70s too. From '75-'85 there were 11 finals in the European cup and English teams contested all but two.Of the other 9 English teams won 7 with Liverpool and Leeds both losing one each. The seven winners were Liverpool(4),Nottm Forest(2) and Aston Villa(1).The only real underperformers were the England team itself, and perhaps that is why many forget how good the players were.Although we shouldn't forget, according to Man Utd fans, football only started in 1992,it didn't exist before then.
Have been watching lots of old clips lately and truly believe that today's Liverpool players could learn a lot by watching the games from the great era of the 70's and 80's. The calm- and smartness in the attack play and finishing. However, quiestion is if not the defense play and perhaps also players have developed some since then.
@@perspellman Certainly there is more 'sports science' employed now - no going down the pub after the game!
A full blooded cup final , lots of tackles , no one rolling around like they been hit with a exocet missile , and of coarse , the best commentator . No nonsence , no theatrics , a commentator that treated the watching viewer as an adult , not a child like todays commentators do
John Ruby well said
@John Ruby Brian Moore, the best commentator? Really??
I agree totally. I think we should start a league of our own and only players from each city can represent. Their club
the funny thing is martin tyler was in the arsenal dressing room after they beat man u to win the fa cup in 79 , it was a more honest playing and interviewing approach back then yet he's still here and acts oblivious to the diving and theatrics .
The best football in history that English football in this period of time.......
The quality of soccer those days were a different class. Each one on the pitch is a true Legends.

No. There are 6 codes of football: Association, Rugby (League and Union), American, Aussie Rules and Gaelic.
We call AsSOCiation football 'Soccer' for short - just as rugby union is shortened to 'rugger' and so forth.
Of course you may call soccer whatever you want, dear boy. But it's still soccer...
@@robertcottam8824 My very simple reply to you is this .... The Full name of the competition in this video is The 1982 FOOTBALL League Cup Final organized by the (then) FOOTBALL League. It started in England in 1888 up to 1992 the Main competition under that organization was The FOOTBALL League Championship (now the Premier League)
As I have just mentioned in 1992 The top division of the FOOTBALL League was taken over by The Football .Association and re-named The F.A. Premier League ... Of Course The FOOTBALL Association organised The FOOTBALL Association Cup we say The F.A.Cup that started from 1872 the FOOTBALL Association started in The mid 1860s in England. So No ; -/ soccer ;-/ here!
Our European FOOTBALL governing body is called Union European FOOTBALL Association or just U.E.F.A.
Our World FOOTBALL governing body is called Federation International FOOTBALL Association or just F.I.F.A.
Hence The World Name, for The World Game is FOOTBALL ... FACT!.
@@robertcottam8824 You totally missed my point ... there is Only One World Game, its This Game of FOOTBALL
I was there. Turned out to be a fantastic day. The officials had the Spurs ribbons on the Cup as there were just a couple of minutes to go and when we equalised, he had to put the Cup back down. We took them in extra time and what a victory that was. First time that Tottenham had ever been beaten at Wembley. ! Spurs played well but that Liverpool team did not know what the word "defeat" meant !
I remember that legend about the cup with spurs ribbons on it!
From a Spurs point of view, if only Graham Roberts had ran the ball into the corner flag, instead of putting a cross into the box? The resulting Clarence led to the equalising goal. Steve Perryman even said so himself after the game.
I was at that game too, at the end of the 90 minutes when the teams were being given their instructions from the managers before extra time, all Liverpool players were standing up but most Spurs players were either lying down or sitting with their heads down. Spurs looked like a beaten team.
Meant to say "right "not tight !
The Spurs could have very easily win this game.
2 great teams full of tremendous talent...what a game😍
4;14 man in the overcoat and cap is Bob Paisley..one of the greatest ever managers in football history..in 9 years at Liverpool he won 3 European cups..
The Greatest xxxxxxx
Sir Bob
Should have been Sir Bob and Sir Bill Shankly. My Grandad used to see Bill Shankly on the station some mornings and both being Scottish they talked football. My grandad said he was on of the nicest men he had ever met
@@helensanderson7092 Yes it should have been
Bob was CLASS,Bob was a gentleman,Bob was humble....unlike bacon face.
I was 11 years old at the time. Watching the match here in Cyprus with my family. After losing 3-1 i couldn't sleep for 2 days. My father as well . Great memories. Both great teams even though i wouldn't admit it back then. :)
The teams Liverpool beat in the 1982, 1983 and 1984 League Cup Finals all went on to win the FA Cup that same season.
That's a cool fact
Had it been the year previously, West Ham as well. To ruin the sequence, West Ham took the Cup in 1980, not 81
Not wankstain united
@@davidreed1995 Haha great name
Great fact.. thanks.. well done!
Brilliant end to end game and gutted as a spurs fan but what a great team that Liverpool team were back then as well. 1st time Spurs lost at Wembley too
Iconic strips with no advertising, world class players and commentary, match full of excitement and goals. Wonderful 👍
Matt busby at the end handing over the cup....one Liverpool legend to another
One Liverpool captain passing it to another.
It's hard to believe Sir Matt played for LFC.
Indeed. It is largely forgotten that Matt Busby, a true sporting great and gentleman, played for Liverpool. He was even offered a coaching position at Anfield but, being that gentleman and having already made a commitment to Man Utd, he remained true to his word and moved to Old Trafford.
How different things might have been!
Still a blemish on my memory this one! How the heck did we lose, was singing me heart out all afternoon ....then ronny bloody wheelan arrived!!
Some really top class footie by both teams. I do love the comment from the commentator: Rush and Whelan, the two youngsters in the team... :)
For a final, this was a very open match. A credit to both sides.
That was with the British football always attacking at any game
i know im asking randomly but does someone know of a method to log back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot the password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Krew Ashton Instablaster ;)
It was the beginning of another era... Rush, whelan, Lee, lawrenson, grobbelaar... The backbone of the dominating Liverpool 80s team
Still a very exciting game to watch today. I'm not from this generation but having seen this I think the pace is not any slower and these lads could easily fit in today's team.
Absolutely they could easily play today👌👌👌
The pace today doesnt vcome close to those days my friend. Do more research.
@@TheGreenjacketbilly so you mean the pace is slower today?
@@TheGreenjacketbilly please elaborate...
Was at this game and what a relief that Whelan equaliser was. The reds were pretty poor by their usual standards but once level we were the only winners. Didn't realise Hansen missed that game as Thompson and Lawrenson was not really a regular centre back partnership at the time, from what I remember.
So many legends on both sides, now that's football. Liverpool fan since birth.
1:59 Classic King Kenny. Waits for the defender to detach and then creates a chance from thin air where a ball outside the box would tempt most midfielders. Three decades before Suarez would excute similar feats.
4:45 - 4:53 Classic King Kennt. Surveys the defence with patience. Waits for Whelan to dart his run. Releases the ball 0.60th of a second before Whelan arrives to finish without interruption. They ran a team with Ardilles and Ricky Villa ragged. My favourite sporting saga is snapshotted in one match here.
Simply Liverpool the greatest football club ever
Best team on the planet managed by the best manager (Sir) Bob Paisley.
Love the 80's football. No personalities and selfishness between who wins what from individual honors. Everyone plays for their club and win together. No diving or no parking the bus. Love this game especially because Liverpool stuck it to # #Clemence who went to play for Spurs
Stuck it to Clemence?
Poor comment
Yes, i remember this game during the 82 when i was 17 yo. Ronnie whelan and Ian Rush the heros!
lucky you :(
I remember this day like it was yesterday, I was 19, I'm 59 now, Jeeze, went there with my best pal & fellow Spurs supporter, we travelled up from Devon on a coach, mainly full of Liverpool supporters but the banter was good along the way.
Spurs were so close to the winning line that day, with about 5 mins to go, then just imploded in extra time, I think it was the 1st homegrown cup final Spurs ever lost, that apart I remember the long solemn journey home, that after the initial in your face over excitement from some of the Liverpool fans when back on the coach, which for me & my pal was obviously very hard to take, I remember it too well sadly!
Liverpool fan here. That was a great Spurs team, but Liverpool had the edge on them in terms of experience and Whelan was having a great debut season.
Souness admitted "they did a job" on Galvin that day and Spurs made the mistake of taking Hazard off in the second half-gave Liverpool space to breath and the rest is history..........
@@dlamiss If Archibalds late shot had gone in Liverpool would have lost.
yes I had forgotten about that I was even there as a Spurs fan....... Liverpool ALWAYS grabbed late goals in those days bit like MUFC under Ferguson..
@Cool Dude They do indeed, Liverpool had two great sides from the mid 70s to the late 80s and the team looks almost as good as those days, as a neutral i always thought Liverpool played football the right way and the football played under Klopp deserves the league..
The great mix of English (Neal/Johnson/Thompson/Lee) Welsh (Rush) Scottish( Souness/Dalglish) and Irish (Larenson/Whelan) I was boy when this was on and I remember it fondly.
better than having eu players
Kind of like football`s equivalent of the British and Irish Lions.
I was there that day , with my dad , stood in the Liverpool end, cracking game. Good memories of time spent with my dad, can't believe it's 42 years ago.
This Liverpool team was a winning machine and got stronger as the game wore on. We always seemed stronger during extra-time and as well as great hunger, this team was supremely fit.
Great era where Liverpool dominated, truly his late 70s to late 80s Liverpool team combined with the United team in the 90s are the best we’ve seen
That ball brings back memories
Great game
Liverpool were superb in pressing and on the counter - similar to Klopps men today
Crucial to this game was when David Johnson came on and superbly made two of the goals. Rest in peace, Johnno.
3:55 a great save from the corner by Clemence..to younger viewers who dont know the 1980's see how the keeper never punched the ball away...a great goalie would always prefer to catch the ball..something modern keepers dont do as much...lesson over..haaa.
Yessssssss
Turning point of the match was the missed chance of Archibald. Then it was 1-1. A solid team and the beginning of Rush success.
Three days after this win Liverpool went to Sofia and lost to CSKA Sofia at the quarter final of Europen Champions cup. They were super team and i was at stadium at Sofia. Since then i am Liverpool fan.
What a great quality of footballers in the 1980s......an entataining game it was!
Remember it going off big time after the game...... Liverpool stood out a mile by the clobber they wore..... spurs we're still mainly skinhead's...... Liverpool's main mob had the day but I do remember some Liverpool gettin a slap if they we're wearing colour's.....!
Two great teams
Those were the days of The League Cup Final being played on Saturday at 3pm and L.W.T. The Big Match, with Brian Moore on I.T.V. showing the highlights (it wasn't Live then) on the Sunday afternoon.
الذكريات الجميلة مع فريقي المفضل .كانت متعة كرة القدم الكرة لا نتوقف
This was a proper game of football. x
As Max Boyce would say, "I remember, because I was there!!" Skinny soon-to-be 16 year old at my first Wembley final. Magic stuff. YNWA.
Interesting the get the ball up if you lose it we'll soon get it back mentality was far more similar style of play to a 1950s than the keep hold of possession we see today. think crowds back then would have lost patience with the modern endless passing
the two new young lads, Whelan & Rush the late Brian Moore said....in 1982...incredible
Amazing energy from Liverpool. They were a force opf nature in extra time. Marauding all over poor Spurs, who had an array of wonderful footballers. But LFC's steel was immense.
It was a reminder of how good Liverpool were in the 80s.
The late great Brian Moore doing the match commentary.
best team in 80's, this why daglish and rush all time top 10. now in 2020's maybe salah, firmino, sane, van djik, allison and trent alexander aronld could get in top 20 of all time.
why I love Liverpool because Liverpool is able to amaze the audience with the changes in the game ❤️❤️❤️
First of three successive years where the team that lost to Liverpool in the League Cup Final went on to win the FA Cup.
When football was football..
Winning Trophies in the 1970s and 1980s were far more Tougher than now ,because English Football was in its peak and the Quality of Players playing in England were By far the most Aggressive ones.
Two very strong sides
Wow, Ossie Ardiles' reaction after he gives the ball away is terrible. He left Whelan unmarked a few yards out.
Great match. Sympa to Spurs, but Liverpool always is Liverpool...what quality of football. Saludos desde España.
How spoiled we've gotten being able to watch everything in HD now.
Ha! More than that, we had to listen to this on the radio, then wait for the highlights on TV: first live LC final was 1984.
The celebrations were incredible that night, never forget that weekend, amazing
Great Liverpool..Made football history
I was there that day, behind the goal where Liverpool scored all 3 goals. But memory is a funny thing. I could have sworn that rush scored the equaliser but it was Ronnie whelan. I am glad to see that it was as good a game as I remember. I saw Liverpool at 1 fa cup nina like and 5 league cup finals. This was the best game and the most satisfying win. Why didn't that spurs ream achieve more than they did? Some great players there
Two good teams , great footy. With memorable players on both sides . The second of four on the trot for us the mighty liverpool . ❤
0:51 The sheer speed, recovery and timing of the tackle by Mark Lawrenson. Miraculous to say the least. And he didn't even touch Ardiles!
Mark was sheer class, he could play right back, left back as well as centreback, and in central midfield, his loss due to a freak injury in 1986, was a shattering blow to Liverpool, and nto to address that loss and replace him would have far reaching consequences for the club.
Lawrenson was, for me, the greatest centre-back this country ever produced. And I include some greats: Bobby Moore, Dave Mackay, Jack Charlton, Kevin Ratcliffe, Alan Hansen...
I would as far too say that Lawro, at his best, was the equal of Franz Beckenbauer.
And now we meet again ....c'mon Reds 😍😍😍
... and we WON again!!!!
Brilliant commentary
Was at the game Souness was brilliant that day YNWA
I remember watching this live as a 9 year old kid in 1982 !
it was broadcast live in Ireland pal !
Was gutted but Spurs won the F.A Cup a few months later against QPR so it wasn't a bad year.
Spurs ad crap and still are
@Brian, yep Spurs had the last laugh. Liverpool would have happily traded the League Cup for the FA Cup. What a great game this was though!
@@johnt7630 I wouldn't say Tottenham had the last laugh as Liverpool won the League as well.
Still enjoyable, 40 yrs down the road.
Really didn't look like they could win it. In the end, the new boys, Rush, Whelan & Grobbelaar helped to make it happen... And the next few years were even more incredible
My first away game watching Liverpool. A great game with great memories, most notably the Spurs fans rushing up the tunnel at the Liverpool end after the game lol. We've never left the ground so quickly lol
i remember that day!four minutes from beating liverpool?ronnie whelan scored two?just think.we were all living in a different world that day weren't we?we could not have imagined this very moment could we?
The first domestic Cup Final that Tottenham lost.
Ronnie whelan was an amazing player
I was only 3 at the time but we were living in Southport and my brother watched this match with my dad who said that Spurs' keeper was a really good 'un, not knowing that he had previously played for Liverpool. I think I would have watched it with my brother as well but I don't remember. A few months later, my mum bought him the then new LFC kit (shiny with thin white stripes on the jersey).
Ray clemence once liverpool then for us at spurs, great keeper for both clubs.
His replacement was outstanding
@@kevinwatkins5001 Outstanding Saves, yet he let Oh So Easey one's in Over and Over Again!.
We'll see Tottenham in the finals again!
and defeat them again!!!
Who.
What a football ..always thought it just made the games look better
Spurs threw that final, they only had to hang on another 3 minutes. Liverpool were so dominant back then, they could never be written on in the entire decade. I think this final toughened Spurs up as they ended up winning 4 trophies in 4 seasons.
.... adored Ronnie Whelan, the Home Farm boy.
great game!
The only time a team has won a cup final at Wembley and received TWO trophies.
Have you noticed what Liverpool had here that the current team dont??? The idea that you dont pass back and sideways all the time..Liverpool in the 1980's predominately passed and moved ..FORWARD.....it started with Shankly..then Paisley..pass and move..all at pace..great football.
Keep in mind you are watching highlights. Backpasses aren't really used much in highlights.
Liverpool where using the style of play adopted from the red star Belgrade team in the 70s
Do sad to heard the death of form liverpool goalkeeper ray clemence has die age 72 RIP RAY
Golden Era of football that
why did it have to cut before the milk cup got lifted apart from that good post
In his auto, Ardilles claimed that when he was approached by Spurs in '78, he hadn't actually heard of them? WHAT? They were as famous as Man Utd.
I love port vale football club 1867 and they are the best team in the world
I like liver pool football club they are the best team
+Radio TV & Film 2 That's awesome!
0:53 Mark Lawrenson would have been sent off for that foul nowadays.
Today is 2022 League Cup final, Liverpool v Chelsea. Exactly 40 years later. Lets win it against.
In the days before 5 substitutions per team. Imagine, potentially 10 players on a field that didn’t start the game. Farce.
How did Archibald miss that chance at the end!!!
Remember it like yesterday. Ronnie Whelan!
This was the last League Cup final to be played on a Saturday as I remember. Wasn't shown live back then either which may have been the reason why it was switched to Sunday a year later.
1983 League Cup Final, Liverpool v Man United was the last to be played on a Saturday.

Spurs won the major domestic cup FA Cup that year and the year before, Milk cup was a second rate trophy.
