I was a teenager in the 70s, goofy footed and idolised Gerry Lopez. Almost 20 years ago I had a job that took me to Maui often, I surfed Honolua bay and other spots on the west side. Got myself across to Oahu a few times to surf Pipe and fulfil a teenage dream. I never got one wave due to the crowd. At least I paddled out.

Thanks for the reminder of my morning session beatdowns today. Not Pipe but it's all relative when you're bouncing off of the reef :-) I like the raw video and no voice-over. I've come up with an alternative way to use the GoPro for pov surfing rather than having it in your mouth. Hands-free and no issues duck diving. Comfortable too. Edit: Somehow I missed getting notifications on "What is it?" I'll try and explain seeing I can't post a photo. First, you need the old/original style GoPro chesty. The one with the thick foam over the hard plastic. Not the one where it's just hard plastic. It's pretty simple really. You combine the neck and chest straps in the back. I use 3/4" velcro and a hair tie. Then you can simply slide the velcro forward or back to tighten and loosen. I added a thin bright silicone cover for my camera with a safety lanyard around my neck just in case. The only way it's coming off is if you turn your back to a wave and don't have the velcro cinched tight. Try it and experiment with the adjustments. It's never bashed in my face and it's held on the worst wipeouts relative to my surfing abilities. Never use a floaty GoPro cover. It's too buoyant. You can adjust and operate the camera easily. I'm working on a way to quickly detach & reattach for handheld shooting too if possible.
The first paddle out looked mellow i was thinking ok when i was at my peek at surfing that would have been ok and the wipe outs looked ok but getting court in side is a whole different story for non surfers its impossible to grasp, after 4 deep duck dives and a swim for the bottom you get that feeling of am i going forwards or getting no where ,this is where fitness and determination comes in to play and why conditions dictate who will be in the line up .I'm retired now shoulders back and neck all worn out Thank you it brought back memories of getting court inside my self .
Watching this makes me want to go surfing so bad, but instead I ate 3 donuts and am now pondering my life choices. Because quarantine sucks and all of the local spots are overcrowded. Great video, and keep up the good work.🤙🏻

I was a kook once when I was a teenager in Kauai. Young bodyboarder who paddled out in a deep water channel out to (what I found out was) 12-15ft Hanalei Bay swells. Barely got over a number of sets absolutely terrified, caught a smaller wave in, got pummeled and almost drown, and washed over the reef. Had to walk over the reef to the beach, destroyed my feet, and learned a valuable lesson that I’ve kept to this day as a wave rider. Know your limits, don’t test them unless you know what you’re getting yourself into. I’ve had nothing but amazing positive surf experiences since

I watched this after being in the gulf off the Island I live on... I paddled for few hours. Then I saw your new POV at second reef and once again, was amazed by your fitness level. The first wave that closed over you near the beginning and the blue sky and Simpson's clouds blew my brain.. keep em coming.🤙
Waves like this are always what held me back growing up lol was just terrified of huge breaks, I surfed up to like 9-10 but where I’m from swells hit 15 and up a lot, I loved a fish board on 5-7ft days

Great exercise, keeps you sharp. Too short a ride though. Comments live would be cool. Your paddle out is great. Your cardio is excellent. The girls must love you, in the saddle longer right Vern?You spoil them for us land lubbers. No worries I had my fun before your parents were born. Paddle out was a breeze on a big board. I had a Weber 8ft Strato Feather awesome board back then. I’ve only found one on the net hanging on a wall. Can’t find them anymore at the Weber shop. The knots on my knees and the volcano on the top of my foot were part of the program. Slip check could be ugly at times. I had “in’s” at Topanga beach BEFORE they removed all the houses. At Latigo also. Great places to learn.

Were the waves really rolling through continuously as they appear to in the video, or were there descernable sets? Looked like a shit ton of paddling either way.
There were lulls this was just when i was recording whenever a set came thru as i would be hunting to get a wave, usually tho you cant get out of the way of them fast enough
Pipeline surfers are a different breed, chatting and laughing and duckdiving monster waves, if my waves were 2-3 feet I'd be like "nah man, better focus today"
Please tell me what GoPro ur using and is it chest mounted? Would you recommend a different way to use the GoPro? I’ve tried on the board facing me but it gets splashed with water. Now I have a short board so I’m sceptical to add a mount on it
This is so cool to see. Do you drift back across the inside after going right? Then paddle back out the pipe rip. I watched Pipe break when I was a 10 year old grom. No video shows how intense this wave really is but watching that lip throw strait out over you gives a clue. Any comments would be fun. How about a camera over you and couple of your friends shoulders (or in front whatever). While sitting in your living room. You could watch and comment with them in a small corner screen. It looked like you got some good video of your friends too. It would be fun to hear them going. That's Me! as they are dropping in or there comments on your rides as well. But ya.. I like this.
