- 'Roar' is the most dangerous movie ever made. Does that sound like hyperbole? It’s not. what's b.s. is that the film claims no animals were hurt during production. I'm sure I heard Weird History disclose that a couple of cats were lost to the flood, and three lions had to be shot after they escaped. I guess the filmmakers don't count these incidents because cameras weren't rolling when they happened.

There are far worse things happening now in 2021, in real life and they are pushed by people wearing masks.

I have a regular, domestic, house cat. He is a very sweet and friendly cat. However, he often shows his affection by grabbing onto a person's feet, legs, hands or arms. The "minimal" claw grabs are usually accompanied by superficial biting... but he's only a small house cat. Big cats, even if raised from cub age, can be just as friendly, but that affection is a lot more damaging.
That's one reason why we haven't domesticated big cats. As you said, a "mauling" by a housecat will earn you a scratch, maybe an infection from said scratch, but the "mauling" itself won't be deadly. Plus, there's a theory that domesticated cats aren't truly domesticated, that they're just wild creatures that we have come to a mutual understanding and agreement with. An Itty-bitty wild cat is pretty harmless to us, especially when they have decided to work with us. A large wild cat like a lion, well, it doesn't matter if we have come to a mutual understanding--they're killing machines and we happen to be prey-sized, so even a very friendly lion could accidentally kill their person
@@spooniesarah yeah, my cats get pretty upset and pesty when their food bowl is empty, but they're not likely to maul me to death as an alternative meal choice.
@@skyden24195 house cats know they are mid-tier predators. When my cat has her zoomies, she likes to be chased. She'll play pretend that I'm a predator chasing her and she's gotta run away to avoid becoming my prey. So this probably plays in our favor when we humans choose to collaborate with small felines vs large ones. Large cats are at the top of the food chain, and would be above us when we aren't armed. They know this, so they won't have any issues with viewing us as an alternative food source and definitely will not pay us the same kind of respect that our pets give us. (Yes, cats are divas and act like entitled royalty, but they respect our position as a higher predator)
@@spooniesarah that's awesome... cat "zoomies." My elder cat (I have 2 total) likes to play in a similar manner. It's the only time she will actually hiss at me which makes me laugh because I'm usually provoking her to do it (hiss).
i have tons of scars and a few small broken bones from friendly playing with human children I'm convinced the only reason adult humans don't randomly maul each other is because of years of experience

I had a substitute teacher in high school that was a former member of the SAG and said he was on the set of that movie. He had some horror stories.

To this day, Tippi Hedren is 91 and still has about 13 big cats. They are enclosed in compounds, but seriously. She enabled behavior that endangered her children. This wasn’t just her husband. It blows my mind.

There’s a difference between loving animals and realizing they can be very dangerous but still wanting to learn and protect them and loving an animal but not learning anything about how they act and assuming “friendship” will make them non-aggressive. Basically it’s people wanting the animals to adhere to them instead of them adhereing to the animals
The only way you can befriend a lion is if said feline has a thorn in its paw and you are able to extract that thorn from its paw.
it mixes male lions together and it mixes solitary tigers, pumas and jaguars together in a group-all totally unnatural and stressful to animals involved.
Psychopath and narcissist make a movie about lions and nearly sacrificed their children and actors to get it done.

There are folks who do the "living with big cats" thing today. But they are keenly aware that loyalties do not extend past the individual when it comes to lions. Google "The Lion Whisperer" for more. Dolf C Volker is another "trusted by big cats" guy worth watching.

The rule was supposed to be like two trainers for every cat, but they had so damn many they just went with two... PERIOD. They also play the poachers in the movie.
They actually trained and hung around the animals since birth, as they thought it would make them more tame, less dangerous more domesticated and more habituated to them. Turns out you can't really tame wild animals
@@J3diMindTrix even if trained, cats will be cats. They like to chase and pounce on things. I've raised house cats all my life, I know how they act, so, as much as I admire lions, I would never consider having one as a pet.

It’s a different feeling watching a movie where characters get hurt and the actors portraying the characters are actually being attacked for real in the film.

I think the lion was filmed at a zoo, but his roar is multiple lions edited together
I read it was a trained lion on a background. The handler would signal to roar and that’s the footage

The true story is that the lion was real and the way they had him tied down was horrible after a certain point they switched to a cgi version

So Tippi was kind of angry at her husband. But wasn’t she big on the plans at first, feeding Cubs and believing they’d probably be domesticated and bond with them. She wanted in on it. She put herself in the positions she was in and also let her kids be in it, only to blame it all on him afterwards? Not buying her “boo bad husband”-act.

I blame both. She could have decided after the start of production that this was a bad idea, but obviously hubby ignored EVERYONE who said "uh no thanks I I wanna die today." Hubby gets much more blame here. Not 100%, but more than half
Where was it mentioned that the making of the movie made her angry? As you can see in this video, & according to their son, her daughter was a stepdaughter to his husband & she felt like he made her role very intense & maybe a bit suffering too & that's why that led to the divorce prolly.
She always did that. Come up with bad ideas, carry them out. Now blame everyone else involved. It was a lifelong modus operandi.
The main problem in the production of this film is having too many Big cats, with little to no Professional Big cats handler.
There's nothing "professional" about returning to that work environment. A true professional knows when it's time to walk.
How the hell could anyone survive this movie?!

I remember seeing this movie twice when it was released in Australia in 81 or 82 and I remember hearing all sorts of stories about how long it took to make and how many people where mauled during production. I wonder if I still have the two free promotional movie posters I got at the door.
My family owned a drive-in in Aus back then and we showed Roar several times on "creature feature" type theme nights. It was the era of films about bee and ant swarms ! I still have all the pre publicity kits and posters and it was sold on the "true horror" of the cast and crew being injured and "everything you see on screen is real". I had no idea til now that it was never even shown in the US ! The scene with Melanie being attacked fully traumatised me as a young teen.
Roar was always a classic VHS rental choice back in the 90s

That was crazy! In 1992 I adopted a cougar from Shambala - Tippi Hedren's Preserve and used to go there once a month to visit the big cats. It was a blast and Tippi was always there and so nice. Poor Melanie Griffith - can you imagine acting in that at 17?

Some people should never be parents. Roar is a great lesson on the whole working of an industry from a filmmaking point of view and from a financial point of view. I'd use it if i were a film teacher because it does cover what is bad parenting, bad filmmaking and bad financing on one reel.

I watched this movie in the early 2000 via VHS 📼. Looking back at those nervous but seemingly 'safe' scenes & getting to know they were real sends cold shivers down my spine
You guys should do a cover on Tod Brownings film "Freaks", it was said to be so disturbing it caused a lady to allegedly have a miscarriage (it was 1932 lol) and effectively destroyed brownings promising career, it starred real life "freaks" from sideshows, some of the first ever put to screen. To this day the film remains only in chunks

My father was a candidate for father of the year also. He took me,my sister and brother at ages 6,8 and 10, me being 6 to the movies when Roar was released. Freaked me out so much I had nightmares for months after.
Tippi Hedren must have been crazy to allow this--and even continue this after her own daughter was injured.

I love animals more then anything but that’s crazy.
But you probably respect that wild animals aren’t supposed to be treated as pets and that their natural behavior is to be respected. Sure, save a cub and bottlefeed it if needs be, I’m all for it. But as much as one want to think he’s like a dog or cat now, they’re now. Only rarely will a tiger or lion remember “their” human fondly and play with him like he did when he was a cub. Most still get mauled if they think they can just walk up and think: hey dude, remember me?
This is the type of outcome that can only come from an out of touch Hollywood power couple with loads of cash and a team full of yesmen.

I saw this film the first time when shown at a theatre in Valencia, CA. The Actress Tippi Hedron was present at the premier. I loved the movie. Thereafter we visited Shambala Animal Preserve she ran in Acton where most of the movie was shot. I made a video of my visit to the preserve. Thanks for details on all injuries of people and delays that incurred due to natural disasters.

For the way fashion historians reacted to their video about corsets, I don't think it's a good idea. Look for Abbey Cox, Bernadette Banner, Morgan Donner, just to name a few for a better aproach on that matter. Also, The Ultimate Fashion History channel, that you might like. I saw "Roar in Sydney when it was released in November 1981. I remember hearing all of those horror stories of behind the scene incidents. But what I remember loving was the cool soundtrack that had some great music and songs

Where and how were all those animals contained and fed? Was there staff just to tend to the care, shelter, water for all of those cats and for that probably scared elephant? Might need to go elsewhere to find answers. Humans usually have a choice about whether or not to participate, but untrained animals usually wind up being subject to extreme adverse stimulae in order to make them do something. That director had a 'hold' on the psychies of his family cast and crew. What was it? 🤔🙁

As much as I feel sorry for all the emotional and physical trauma the cast and crew went through, my heart goes out to all those poor animals that had absolutely NO CHOICE!!! The cast and crew made the choice to take part in the movie and kept coming back (for whatever reason) even after getting hurt. However none of those animals (some of which died) were given a choice 🥺😥😭
