Incredible to think this very talented side did not qualify (OK, it took a freak result in Spain to ensure that) but they also missed out on WC86 but their time would eventually come in 88.
With the shambolic Argentina/Peru game at the '78 WC, the Spain/Malta is one of the most clearly corrupt games in football's history! I saw the game live and it was clear somebody had spoken to the amateur Maltese players at half time [3-1 after 45mins] and some exchanges [not pleasantries i suppose] had taken place.....it was unbelievable. The way that Maltese team collapsed and let in NINE goals in the second half is nothing short of despicable. I've spoke to FOUR players involved in that game and they all confirmed that there where Spanish-speaking visitors in the dressing room deep in conversation [via interpreter] with both the manager and team captain......who promptly informed the team to "relax" as it would benefit ALL greatly.....and the rest as we say, is history.
There were several changes that were implemented to address collusion in qualifying as well: 1. All final group matches are played at the same time (Spain already knew the result of Malta's match vs the Dutch and were aware how many goals they needed) 2. In case of a tie, the head-to-head record has been prioritized since Euro 96; Spain would've qualified anyway if that rule was in place - both teams were tied on points, goal difference and goals scored in their two matchups, but Spain has one goal scored in their 2:1 defeat in Rotterdam
The Dutch were quite unlucky to miss out on France '84, and Mexico '86. It would've been interesting to have seen an emerging Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten in those finals!
That Spain - Netherlands one reminds me of France - Spain in 2006. Both losing teams had an upcoming golden generation (1988 and 2010) that took the world by storm undisputedly, but they had to lose to another golden team first to gain the experience.
Imagine that, not making Euro 84 by goals scored ! That 's bogus, a two legged play off would have been fairer. Also there were the shananigans with the Malta - Spain match with strong suspicions of match fixing.
I found this written by a Maltese fan: "The Spainish were annoyed that Malta 's home game vs. HOLLAND was played in Aachen Germany as our Staduim was suspended , and it was claimed that the Mfa got 20, 000 from the Dutch Federation instead playing the game in Italy( according to World Soccer ) "
Yes . Spain siegte gegen Malta 12-1. Genau das Ergebnis was gebraucht wurde. Das wurde damals sogar in Deutschland sehr misstrauisch in den Medien berichtet. 1986 in Mexiko war Holland aber auch nicht dabei. Aber 1988 war dann alles super für Oranje.

Evidence? Where is the evidence to imply that silver medalists of that competition were cheaters?
