    Thanks for the video! I've owned an XP-PEN 22" drawing monitor since 2016 and have since purchased two additional monitors for my two (adult) kids to use. Last year I upgraded to the 24" screen. Coming from a pencil-pen-paper background, I have to say that these devices forever changed the way I illustrate! Despite having these fantastic monitors, I've NEVER used the customizable buttons on them, but after watching your BRILLIANT idea of making custom button stickers to put on your monitor I am motivated to learn how to program these to make my work in applications more efficient. That in itself should have been a no-brainer, but it's been something I've been procrastinating (for years!) about even though there have been countless times when I could have used these shortcuts to expedite a repeatable function. After watching you, I decided it was time to get to know my monitors' functions better to increase my productivity. Recently I've been looking into getting into animation. I'm confident these screens will make the learning process smoother. Thanks again for the video (inspiration). Liked. Subscribed. Stay safe & healthy!

      I thought I had replied to your comment when I first saw it! So sorry for the late response! I'm excited to see what you do animation wise and glad that my video helped with the side keys. I love them so much and I honestly don't know if I could use a normal keyboard after using them if I ever decide to upgrade.

    Hey there! Thanks a lot for this review 💖I've been eyeing the XPPEN products for a while and wasn't exactly sure which one would be best, especially considering this would be my first (working) pen display tablet! I've been a digital artist for years and I didn't know whether or not the older products like this one would stay good! It makes me extremely happy to hear that it gets it's job done in a relatively good manner as well as being a good price ☺ I might update once I get my hands this product to say if it left a good impression on me, like this video did!

      I can honestly say that after a month of using this device, it is my favorite way to draw. I switch between it and my iPad pretty consistently but I always think about sitting down in my studio to draw as opposed to picking up my iPad. Any excuse I can use to come back to this pen display, I’m going to use it. Art wise, it’s been my favorite piece of tech thus far and I don’t think any, besides a significant price drop for a 4K 20”+ pen display, would make me want to replace it. I actually want to do a “One Month Later” review that focuses on creating shortcuts, refining the stylus, etc. And also show what I’ve been drawing on this thing in that time. And if you decided to get this, please update us on how you feel about it! I really want to know how other people are using it, what they like and don’t like, etc.

    Glad I found your channel! Im in the same boat as you. Didnt draw for a long time, jumped back in and two years later... my wrist doesnt take to inking anymore as I tend to instinctively death grip traditional pens. So now I'm looking at digital.
    Got a couple questions for you:
    1. Do you find you make use of the shortcuts consistently?
    2. Is the quality of the display and pan holding up, are the drivers stable? The net would have you thinking its gonna fail fast.
    3. Does it take less pressure than a traditional pen to get good lines?

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad you’re getting back into it! Honestly coming back to art as a primary creative outlet has been the most freeing thing I’ve done in almost 20 years. So in answer to your questions:
      1) I use the shortcuts CONSTANTLY. I’ve moved some stuff around but my top left is my pen, eraser, blender, the hand, and lasso tools. Both wheels do either brush size and zoom (left one) or rotate and opacity (right one). I have my save, copy, and paste on the top right set of buttons, I have mesh transform, normal transform, color picker, flip, clear layer, and liquify all set up on it. I think I’ll be adding new color onto it shortly. Having the buttons on the sides means I almost never touch my keyboard and I love it.
      2) The drivers are perfect, as far as I know. I’m on an M1 MacBook Air and I haven’t had any issues with drivers in Clip Studio. I’ve adjusted stuff as I become more comfortable with the display and refine my own process but it’s virtually 1 to 1 with my iPad now. Nothing will beat traditional in terms of tactile but I can say that it feels really dang close.
      3) I’m heavy handed, so it took me awhile to get used to digital drawing from my traditional stuff. However, I find that being able to adjust the pressure to a fine degree means I can either pull the pressure back a little when I’m being very heavy with the pen or need to be heavier. I’ve actually found myself being lighter and this is starting to transfer to my traditional sketch pad, where I used to be a little heavy with a lot of erasure marks.

      This is the display for my MacBook Air M1. Keep in mind, for me, the only thing I compare the Artist 22R Pro to is my iPad Pro, since I work in Clip Studio in both, and don't look at my MacBook screen while I'm working. The 1080p screen isn't bad at all while working and while a 2.5K or 4K screen would be far more crisp, 1080p is easily workable and usable!

    what about the distance between the pen and the screen? I’ve been using 15.6 artist and it’s unfortunately a big issue. How does this one hold up? Is it laminated?

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The screen isn't laminated and I don't know how the 15.6 looks in terms of pen to screen distance, but the 22R Pro isn't a major issue for me. I use an iPad Pro daily, as well, so I'm switching between the two over the course of several hours. While the drift is more noticeable at the edges of the screen, the drawing area most people, including myself, will use is great once calibrated. It does require a little set up out of the box but setting up this tablet was so much faster than any other piece of tech I've ever used.

      Hello clone, welcome the brotherhood! Hahaha, glad this helped you out, though. I am really loving this thing and up against an iPad Pro, it definitely holds up. Switching between the two has been super seamless. Hell, the only thing that hampers anything is that Clip Studio Paint has some big files if you decide to record your drawing process like I do. So you just have to wait for the big uploads and downloads to take place.

    I would love to try one of these. I have an older wacom which I never really got good with simply because I find looking at the screen while drawing on the tablet awkward. I have a lot of traditional drawing experience so maybe one of these would help with the transition.

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I, personally, wouldn't. I find that the amount of effort it takes to use the plans aren't wroth it and, generally speaking, the manufacturer will take care of you pretty well. Now, if you live in a place where there's, say, moisture, smoke, a bit of chaos (aka pets and younger children), you might want to invest in it or have a place where it lives and isn't disturbed but I haven't found major issues with mine and I'm going to be a year in early next year.

    Which is better / latest model, XP Pen artist 22R pro or XP Pen Artist 22 Gen 2? Would you recommend either of these in 2023bto a beginner?

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So sorry for the super late response! So between the two, the Gen 2 is the newer version and right now they both cost roughly the same, however, the differences between them with matter if these specifics factors matter to you: 1) if you want side buttons, 2) if laminated screens are a necessity, and 3) if connectivity to multiple inputs matters. The 22R Pro isn’t laminated but comes with USB-C and A, VGA, and HDMI and a load of buttons on both sides. The 22 Gen 2 is laminated but you’re giving up USB A and VGA and the side buttons. To make up for lack of buttons, you need a keyboard or dongle like the Tourbox for easy short cuts, which could shoot the total price well above the 22R Pro. For me, the buttons and not needing a keyboard or external device more than makes up for the 22R Pro not having a laminated display and I switch between it and an iPad pretty consistently during the day and don’t miss a beat. I would say if screen size is what you want, definitely get one of these this year. I know they just put out the new 16” but there’s stuff that’s missing like adjustable stand and inputs that really kills a device that size for me. However they have a new 22 Plus that I think just came out at a $460 price point with some new tech in it that might be good but I’ll have to wait to try to review it to give a verdict!

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid  ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need a laptop to use it. Essentially, pen displays like this are glorified monitors that let you write on them via the included stylus. Newer ones will sometimes let you use your fingers for stuff and more recent ones are all-in-ones but both of those will add anywhere between an additional $200-$2000 for the same screen size.

      @@gohck1649 I'm happy to help! I would say if you think you'll be mobile all of the time, getting something like an iPad will be great. If you have a dedicated space, something like a Pen Display (like this) will be amazing. Dude, that's MY story! I drew a ton in my childhood and teens, and even my early 20's. Got a career in graphic design, so I've always been doing creative work. Though my pro digital stuff being mostly product and event related in Photoshop was done with mouse & keyboard, photo compositions. Before I knew it 20 years went by since I last picked up a pencil or made my comics related art.
    So 4 years ago I decided not only to get back into my illustration, but also pick up a tablet to transition my passion into the digital medium... something I was always telling myself I'd do "someday." Finally woke up that I needed to MAKE THAT DAY HAPPEN. And yeah, those first few months not only shaking off the rust of my form, also learning how to apply it to a screen, learning Photoshops brush settings (never needed with the photo designs), color mixing and blending, and all that which I only began to apply with PS.

    Nop, sorry but this is rly bad and cheap ass product. I use to own one and had high regards for XP PEN back than...
    I been using Xp Pen Products for at least 3years now and I was very happy with my initial one (XP-A-12)
    I got this for Christmas, and it broke in 3days. All I did with this XP-A-22R one was unplug/reconnect the USB-C in the back, 3times a row.
    Why I did this: Usually this method saves you the trouble of restarting your pc every single the tablet didn't got recognized during booting...
    (I mind you, this is ultra common situation with XPPEN, and even other brands)
    I still own a Xp Artist 12 and I'm quite happy with it. For how sturdy and durable it was, made me think all higher quality products for this brand would all be the same... god I couldn't have been MORE WRONG. The only good thing about this model is Size and Colour range(plot twist u still need a screen calibrator cause its colours are still not accurate out of the box). Say w/e you want but Paying anything above 300-500 bucks for a product that has no quality standards, plus that breaks so ezly. You could as well spend that extra money in to something better like a Wacom.

I haven't had any major (non-user-error-related) issues with my XP-PEN and have purchased three more (2x 22", 1x 24") and have no complaints... so far.
