Enjoying the Process || WIP Draw with Me
Welcome back, Squids!
Today, I'm showing a little bit of my process in a pared down version of "Draw with Me!" I'm drawing Taliah, my webcomic's, main cast as Final Fantasy VII characters in celebration of FF7: Rebirth coming out soon. For this video, I'm working on lighting on my characters and, while it's not a full process video or a speedpaint, it gives you a little insight into how I use my XP-PEN Artist 22 R Pro pen display as well as Clip Studio Paint. I hope you enjoy!

      Android is kind of weird with this device because the orientation is weird/changes based on how the phone is set up. It does take some getting used to if you’re like me and used to a computer or bigger tablet like an iPad but it’s doable. I would say after a week of use, you’ll be used to the size of it and you won’t mind too much but you’d definitely have to work with it for awhile to get comfortable on it.

    Around 19min. Talks about pen bottoms, let just say I have a very cheap (10dolars) tablet with a pen with bottoms in it. For people who are just too much into real pencils so not really bottoms on it. ... I will say is a suffering of some short. I do have them disable too. If anyone think a pen with bottoms would be an issue, let me say, it doesn't matter what type of tablet you get, if it has bottoms, it will be an issue (how big of an issue is dependan on how every individual manage). Hello! Ive been using the larger pentab (it would be as big as Deco L probably) for the longest time and im thinking to switch to this Deco MW because it looks practical and easy to carry and !!the bluetooth wireless function!! But i wonder if I actually need all of those eventho i DO want it D: I have some questions: 1. Do you think it annoys you when your hand kinda slips when you draw on the corner of the pentab? As it doesnt have a large hand rest area 2. Do you think the bluetooth function would worsen the performance of the pentab as time passed by? Like would it still works well eventho we're using it in a long period of time (like 1-2 years) 3. I heard the pentablet using battery, does it also apply even when you use the cable? Or does it work just like a normal pentablet when you use the cable Sorry i asked a lot of questions, thank you!!

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So sorry for the late reply! To answer your questions: 1) I don’t use this every day, however, my Mini-Squid uses it regularly and hasn’t complained but they have smaller hands. While I was testing it and the times I’ve played around with it, it takes some adjustment so that I’m not slipping off the side. Definitely tweaking the drawing area helps a ton to fix this. 2) I don’t think Bluetooth degradation is a thing anymore that we really have to worry about. I think this will work great for years to come if you have the Bluetooth version! 3) I think it charges when you have the cable in. The version I reviewed here is the cable only version (we have iPads for drawing on the go) but I do believe the Bluetooth version charged with the cable when it’s plugged in! I hope that helps!

    Man you’re saying all the things I’ve thought for years, confining myself to something that is “ my artstyle” was tantamount to my growth in art for the longest time, this deserves more eyes on it. We as artists and people are fluid and we should stop being so rigid about these things

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s exactly how I feel about all of it. On a piece I might want to do more painting than paint bucket. On another, dark, heavy line art over no visible line art. On another it might be all water color and technical painting. It’s all me. There’s not a single style that I should be conforming to and even if I have the same workflow between two pieces, I might decide to change something just enough that they look completely different. And I should love everything I created.

    Hey man, I don't know if you have any experience with the other really popular xp pen drawing tablet the deco 01 v2, but if I am looking between getting this one (the deco M) or the deco 01 v2, which would you say is the better one? Any possible price differences are irrelevant as I can actually pick up the deco 01 v2 for cheaper than the deco M, but I am wondering if the deco M, being a more newer and recent product, is better than the 01 v2. Thanks.

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      After looking into the Deco 01 v2, it seems like the only real difference between the two besides there being a wireless version of the M is the size. The Deco 01 seems to have a larger space to draw on and I will say that tablets like these take a bit of getting used to drawing wise. I would go for something more recent in that regards only because support might last longer (except XP-Pen supports their products for a long while, from what I can tell). I would grab the M for the long term but if the Deco is at a good price, I would jump onto that. Hope this helps a bit!

      @@theprizewinningsquid Hey man, thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment. I ended up getting the Deco L. I figure if you've got the deskspace it's always better to go with a bigger size because you can always use the software to restrict your drawing area if you want, but it's impossible to do the opposite. I also looked more into the specs and I read some comments on how some people didn't like the deco 01 v2 because it has a high initial activation force, while the new deco models with that X3 chip is much better in that regard.

      Oh no that really sucks I haven’t seen any image retention on the screen yet with it. I do tend to have things moving on it a lot especially after the Mac OS Sonoma update that has moving desktops.

    (2:28) That reminded me of when I realised one of my beginner digital artist mistakes, was that when calibrating the pen input on my Artist 13.3 Pro (and BOOX Note Air2), I would need to hold the pen in the position I would normally draw in and calibrate that way in order to have the digitiser place the mouse pointer right at the tip when I hold it in my drawing position. I previously did the calibration with the pen directly perpendicular to the display. (3:58) In my use case, as Krita, the primary app I currently use as an illustration beginner, supports auxiliary windows displaying the same file, I would sometimes have a window on my primary display (a 27" 1440p monitor) showing a full view of the illustration I'm working on, and have the main Krita window on the pen display. (9:17) I just saw this, and what I noticed in the video thumbnail is that you actually paste stickers on the buttons! I do the same with mine, except that I designed and printed mine instead of writing them, but to be fair, I have the 13.3" version (due primarily to space constraints), and the shortcut keys on the 12, 13.3, and 15.6 Pro are shaped differently in comparison to those on the 22R Pro. I arranged the shortcut keys on mine differently based on where I would naturally press them and had colour coded some of them with different solid coloured backgrounds. The keys are also assigned to just the most important functions, as I have an external shortcut remote that I use if I can for additional commands. (9:44) I labelled the equivalent key on mine 'Tool 1' as I use multiple art apps and the primary tool depends on what I use the app for. In the case of Krita, it's the brush tool (not a specific brush as I'm currently only using a few of its included brushes), but considering the flexibility of keyboard shortcut settings in KDE apps (Krita, Dolphin, Kate, etc), I could probably assign a keyboard shortcut to a specific brush. I assigned the command to the second key rather than the first. (10:19) I assigned the command to the third key on mine and do have it labelled 'Eraser'. In Krita, I have it set to toggle the eraser on and off, whose eraser function seems to work differently to how it works in CSP. In other art apps, I do have it set to switch to the eraser tool, or if the app I'm using doesn't have an eraser tool, I instead have it set to the second tool I use the most there. (11:39) I sense that it's triggered in CSP using a modifier key. If I recall correctly, in Krita, it's triggered using the left alternate key. On my Artist 13.3 Pro, I have keys labelled 'Control' and 'Shift or Alternate' and they're assigned to the 5th and 6th buttons respectively. (12:57) I didn't think about the flip feature, but will now need to check to see if the same thing can be done in Krita. (13:28) My guess is that you probably thought you were going to use that tool and/or you wanted to fill the space. I'm reminded of when I'd take notes on which functions I'd use in certain apps and assign those to the keys. (16:36) I was reminded of some indie artists and character designers who do similar things where they have sets of characters not or not yet part of a fiction media IP but want to show them off in art, including concept art. For example, Luigi Lucarelli had created concept art for animated TV series he dreamt up. (25:08) I agree, and as far as I can tell and theorise, those comic studios, as well as animation and design studios, would usually use high-end Wacom Cintiq Pro models with high resolutions and extreme colour accuracy, but also use them for many years and only replace them when they replace their PCs, monitors, etc with newer models, that would happen around every 5 to 8 years. Long tangent short: I've seen videos of some professional studios using Cintiq 22HDs in 2022, but they'd likely upgrade soon. I currently master illustrations created in Krita at 600 DPI (instead of the default of 300 DPI), but may eventually go up to 1200 dpi some time in the future, with my idea being that for some projects, I could export at lower resolutions first and export at full resolutions in the future. To be fair, my main PC has 64 GB of RAM that I take advantage of when producing illustrations or running multiple VMs. The connections being USB-A and HDMI aren't much of a problem for me right now as my main PC is from 2017 and my secondary is from 2015, but if I do upgrade, I'd likely get one of those USB-C hubs and plug the XP-Pen "3-in-1 cable" into that. (22:15) I agree.

      I loved reading this! I'm so glad that someone else goes out of their way to put little reminders on their buttons. Honestly, it's not even about looking at the button itself but just seeing the color out of the corner of your eye and pressing it quickly with your finger. Glad to see other artists doing the same!

    Which is better / latest model, XP Pen artist 22R pro or XP Pen Artist 22 Gen 2? Would you recommend either of these in 2023bto a beginner?

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So sorry for the super late response! So between the two, the Gen 2 is the newer version and right now they both cost roughly the same, however, the differences between them with matter if these specifics factors matter to you: 1) if you want side buttons, 2) if laminated screens are a necessity, and 3) if connectivity to multiple inputs matters. The 22R Pro isn’t laminated but comes with USB-C and A, VGA, and HDMI and a load of buttons on both sides. The 22 Gen 2 is laminated but you’re giving up USB A and VGA and the side buttons. To make up for lack of buttons, you need a keyboard or dongle like the Tourbox for easy short cuts, which could shoot the total price well above the 22R Pro. For me, the buttons and not needing a keyboard or external device more than makes up for the 22R Pro not having a laminated display and I switch between it and an iPad pretty consistently during the day and don’t miss a beat. I would say if screen size is what you want, definitely get one of these this year. I know they just put out the new 16” but there’s stuff that’s missing like adjustable stand and inputs that really kills a device that size for me. However they have a new 22 Plus that I think just came out at a $460 price point with some new tech in it that might be good but I’ll have to wait to try to review it to give a verdict!

    I've been online checking out reviews of people who've been using XP-Pen for any length of time because... mine just died after barely 2 years of use. (I had the 22" 2nd Gen). JUST after the warranty expired. I contacted XP-Pen, and their reply was "Sorry, here's another model you can buy". 😕 I'm highly cautious to ever recommend them again now. I advise everyone... Get extended warranty's, and really research the longevity of a product... especially XP-Pen now.

    Thanks so much for both of your videos on this. I do have two questions though: 1. How sturdy is the tablet? I saw a video for the 16 version & saw that it’s a little flimsy 2. Are the cables pretty sturdy & secure? The same video showed that the cables for the tablet were kind of flimsy and easily came off

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1) It's pretty solid. The case is hard plastic (think like a high end TV), the screen doesn't really give even if you press pretty hard, the stand is solid metal, and the buttons are pretty solid and click. It's definitely not flimsy at all. 2) So the cables are pretty secure. I just went and gave them a tug and it does take a hard pull to get them out. If you have them loose everywhere, I think they would come out if snagged pretty tight on something else, but in every day moving it back and forth like I was previously, they never really moved much and I didn't have any issues with them accidentally coming out.

    Xp released their new 2.5Kn16 inch with 16k pen pressure and cones with a remote control! It's like the Wacom cintiq 16 w.o the remote. The new 16 doesn't have a stand but you can easily get a laptop stand and it works! I just wish the 22 you reviewed had a higher resolution. Someone told me 4K resolution. Thanks for this update! I just got your first review on recommended and I was wondering how the tablet was holding up. This and the Huion Kamvas 22 were on my list, but what makes me lean towards the XP pen more is the wheels and the few extras (the glove and the stand) it comes with. If you don't mind me asking, after using it for a long time are you seeing any scratches on the display? Would you recommend buying a screen protector? And how are the pen nibs coming along, have you had to change them at any point or get extra replacements?

    • @theprizewinningsquid
      @theprizewinningsquid 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m so glad my reviews have helped! So it comes with a screen protector on it that gives it a “paper like” feel. I haven’t noticed any scratches at all on it. I honestly would just buy another protector just like it to trade it out but what’s there is holding up super well on my end. As for nibs, I’ve traded them out twice and they are holding up super well. I only do it if it “feels’ like the cursor is drifting a little more. It seems to have helped the two times I’ve put a new one in but that’s only been after a few months each time. I’ll get extras though cause they’re not too expensive and I like being prepared but I have at least a years worth right now.

    Dude, that's MY story! I drew a ton in my childhood and teens, and even my early 20's. Got a career in graphic design, so I've always been doing creative work. Though my pro digital stuff being mostly product and event related in Photoshop was done with mouse & keyboard, photo compositions. Before I knew it 20 years went by since I last picked up a pencil or made my comics related art. So 4 years ago I decided not only to get back into my illustration, but also pick up a tablet to transition my passion into the digital medium... something I was always telling myself I'd do "someday." Finally woke up that I needed to MAKE THAT DAY HAPPEN. And yeah, those first few months not only shaking off the rust of my form, also learning how to apply it to a screen, learning Photoshops brush settings (never needed with the photo designs), color mixing and blending, and all that which I only began to apply with PS.
