Hey there, you helped me immensely with my first big car purchase. A 2009 CRV that at the time had 90k on it, I bought it from a single owner who bought it cash brand new and basically used it as a 95% highway commuter from his city to mine about 50 miles away. He literally showed me his paperwork as well as some recalls he had done to it, it was even kept in the garage haha
I am a Jeep tech and i only see these problems on people who don't maintain there cars . The molding that came off someone getting out of the car probably got there clothes caught on it . the only thing that i would agree is the oil filter housing starting to leak from the seals at high mileage and they can be replaced .
I agree with you Greg. I really liked the jeep brand back in the 60s/70s when I first got my driver's license. They weren't perfect but they were so easy and affordable to work on. As for the brand today, the list of what's NOT wrong with Jeeps is a lot shorter than the list of what IS wrong with them.
Haha - summed up so well at the end. Yeah, that is very much the same thing many of the well known TH-cam mechanics echo as well. On a crazy sidenote - did you see that the RamCharger electric truck they're making is going to have one of those 3.6L V6s in it as a "range extender"? Aye yi yi... that is a disaster waiting to happen.
I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 170K miles never had an issue with the lifters. I changed my oil at regular intervals. People have this problem when they're negligent with oil changes.
I have a 2014 Cherokee with 131,000 mile an drove the hell out of it, towing a boat for at least 1/2 of those miles, its been excellent. Never been the the dealer. The only problem has been a Thermostat at 130,500 miles, nothing else.
Thanks for telling it as it is Greg. I kid you not, almost every Grand Cherokee that was booked in for a logbook service, had the owner complaining of a list of faults on the driveway. To the point where it was rare that a customer didn't have a list of issues they wished to add to their "service" the only ones that didn't were near new very low milage ones. These vehicles seem to be as reliable as a politicians promise, and around as expensive to fund.
I just copped a 05 grand Cherokee for a beater. It was received with 148K miles. 1 original owner who bought it brand new. It’s getting inspected on Monday and this weekend we put it in our shop and changed all the fluids. Including transmission fluid. Also put Lucas additive in. It’s just a four-wheel-drive beater for me to drive and to keep miles on my car, which is a front wheel drive. I needed a four-wheel-drive for the snow we get. When it snows heavy, I can’t even drive my car like anywhere.
Excellent analysis!! I trust your comments. It's unbelievable a car factory can make the same mistake over, and over, and over......again!! Appreciated your advice!!
I work at jeep this reply is before watching. Top complaints 1)Oil Housing leaks 2)Ticking bad cylinder heads 3)Water Pumps 4)Never buy the air suspension
I bought my wife’s 2012 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 with 82,000 in 2015 from her , I drove it until 145,000, During that time I did have to replace the water pump, a wheel bearing , power steering rack , multiple running and headlight bulbs burned out ( replaced them myself via TH-cam help). I did enjoy the 2012 jeep. I finally traded it in 2024 for a new 2025 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 Cost me $50,000 including all fees and MA state sales tax . I did get the extended warranty ( it cost me $3200) going out to 75,000 miles or 10 years covering all electronics and free loaner on any work needed . 0:15
I've got a 2014 GC Diesel, 100,000 klms, wifes got a 2016 Cherokee Black Hawk Petrol, 92000 klm neither have caused any problems, both serviced regularly
I like the old school Jeeps as well, especially the ones with the 4.0 inline six cylinders but the electrical problems and reliability of the new ones are a complete disappointment. Great video.
Well, I have a 2014 with over 300k on clock. Thanks for telling everyone how crapy they are, I got mine third of the price of used 4runner and have twice the options. I don't understand why people don't do basic maintenance and they want to drive last sentury's tractors so much. This car is not that complex to work on, I do all myself in the garage
My 2016 jeep grand cherokee 4x4 3.6L WK2 is at 154k miles and i get the service done every 7k miles. So far the only issue that has come up is that stupid evap code but its the cheap plastic that they used so the fix is electric tape wrapped around it to stop the leak and the code goes away. Thanks for the other information with the lifters though
I wished I would have found this video A WHOLE LOT EARLIER ... like.. before I bought a 2018 JGC..I already had to deal with the P0440 code.. now I'm dealing with transmission issues..it seems that it doesn't know what gear it wants to go in when downshifting at slow speeds.. under 40mph.. not very good in stop and go traffic..it disengages while in D.. have to cycle the gear shifter to put it back in drive... the shifter will show that it's in D.. but step on the gas and you go nowhere and the message center will give display a message saying... step on brake..press handle to shift in gear... only 97000 miles.... right now I'm stuck with this vehicle and having to deal with it..
Usually a manufacturer works out kinks 2-3 years after a new model is release and patches all the bugs. I'm really surprised that Chrysler didn't do anything about the rocker arms despite it being a bread and butter engine for them.
I have a 2022 cherokee trailhawk, average build quality at best. The 3.2 pentastar is a proven engine for the most part. Great off road, locking rear diff, low range, bunch of modes. Terrible gas mileage. It's a average suv.
My wife bought a 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with the V6 3.2 Pentastar in February of 2023. I agree, the gas mileage is bad ranging from 19 to 22 mpg.
2014-18 Cherokee KL has the 9 speed transmission with the problematic shifting, The 2019 got the software update. The GC has a 8 speed tranny that wasn't a concern.
One of the hairdressers who works in the same building had a 2015(ish) Cherokee and nothing but issues. It was a piece of junk. Actually I have to edit my comment: I just remembered one of my buddies has a Renegade, and had the entire engine replaced on it under warranty.
I was thinking of purchasing a 2018 Grand Cherokee Summit but after watching some of the videos on you tube on the issues with this vehicle, I’m holding on to my Japanese made vehicle.
Your 💯right jeep Stellantis make some great looking vehicles but the reliability issues R just to much I looked @ the grand Cherokee trailhawk as it’s good off-road & towing I know someone that has one he loves it & the Ram 1500 but I was lucky not to be able to find a good 2021 model in Australia to try out so ended up with a ford ranger 2L biturbo 😎
So do Grand Cherokees have 9 speeds transmissions? And do you know what they hell you are talking about - also - how many 3.6L Pentastars are out there? I know this as a guy who did rocker rollers/lifters - but I'd almost consider that maintenance - I did it myself which is way cheaper than a shop - but then there is the timing chain vs belt conversation, my cams were fine so only roller rockers and lifters, $350 in parts to do it myself, and as for the oil filler issue - that is because shops over tighten the filter cap, and likely use an impact
They are riding on their legacy as a durable and easy to repair go anywhere vehicle when the modern Jeep models are nothing like the ones of the past. Mercedes Benz did this starting with the 2000 model year S class. It worked out for them in terms of sales. They have never sold as many cars as they do now. Most get junked before reaching 15 years or 150K miles. Maybe it will work out for Jeep like that too.
100% disagree Greg. I have had a few jeep grand Cherokee limited. Current one has 252k. just replaced trans 4k ago. oiler cooler 12k. water pump 10k ago. also with transmission replaced i swapped out the motor mounts. I am driving a 2015 limited trail rated. i did all the work myself. Greg i had no problem changing the plugs and filters etc. why are you dissing the jeep Greg? If you can change a tire you can do everything on a jeep. How do you feel on the new jeeps? LOL
A 2011 with quadra lift was being sold cheap, suspension problems. A little research, the repair not worth it. A little research, it appears this is another will happen and cost a fortune when it does.
Greg, I have the 2017 Jeep Compass with 78000mi.with Little to no problem so far. What used model would you recommend I trade into. I'm 63 yrs of age. Fixed income very little travel
so sad for me to hear lol. I have an XJ cherokee with a quarter of a million miles on it and am being pushed to buy a "more reliable" vehicle by family and gf. This is the only "modern" vehicle I can think of that is appealing to me, but I know the jeep name has gone downhill immensely since the XJ days. I thought maybe this model got a little more love than the pathetic Compass and even the regular Cherokee. Now I gotta go back to the drawing board for what vehicle to buy lol. If anyone has recommendations for a truck/SUV in the 12-14k$ range with towing capabilities and 4WD please let me know lol
Jesus Christ, what’s wrong with you people I’m talking about you. Just talk about the problems you ain’t gotta bring out props waste everybody’s time. Do you know anything? Or are you just watching TH-cam videos about valves and lifters? We’ve all seen these videos
Scotty Kilmer would approve of this video
As would WhistlinDiesel
I haven't watched it yet. Does he say the Jeep is a POS and you should buy a Toyota instead?
Is Scotty ok???

Once you own Toyota/Lexus i couldn't be bothered watching this truthful video. Amazing Gm-Ford- Chrysler still around.
Just look at the recalls on tundra and new Tacoma issuers. Not Toyota anymore boy
Now a days, even Toyota and Honda there quality has crumble 👎👎. Now is a gamble to get a reliable vehicle for the high $$$ you pay for.
Wrangler is the official vehicle of wealthy high school parking lots.

I've had 4 wk2 3.6 G Cherokees. All over 200 000km. Not 1 single issue.

THANKS GREG, I WSS TEMPTED TO BUY ONE THIS WEEK, AFER WATCHING YOUR VIDEO AN LISTEN TO YOUR ADVICE I WONT BUY A JEEP CHEROKE AT ALL.
We in the UK never got the 3.6 . It was the 3.0 diesel or hemi
I'm at 157,000 and the only issues ive had was a leaking transcooler and a broken emissions hose.
I went and hugged my Honda CRV after viewing this video ❤.
