      Hard to choose on such a classic, but I would say the opening track. Thanks for making me feel old by the way, I bought this CD in July of 95!

    Metal Hammer gave the best description of this masterpiece album: "So far ahead of its time that bands are still failing to rip it off convincingly today, Fear Factory's ultra-precise extreme metal attack and pioneering harsh-to-clean vocal approach dragged metal into the future."

    Fear Factory are responsible for so much of what modern metal sounds like. Tightly locking kick rhythms with guitar riffs wasn't really a thing until Fear Factory did it. Pantera had some moments of the kick following guitars, but not like Fear Factory. Listen to any recent metal release, the kick follows the guitar exactly. Djent was basically a modern version of what FF was doing back in the day. Fear Factory were trail blazers.

    • @ZeBubba
      @ZeBubba 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Listen to Meshuggah pre-1995, they already had their interlocked kick/guitar patterns going strong.

    • @bobbyincidemetal
      @bobbyincidemetal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ze Bubba Exactly! Hugga was doing this before FF.

    • @Sean-fv4wi
      @Sean-fv4wi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Absolutely. And that's not even mentioning the melodic vocals. Revisionists (who probably aren't even old enough to remember back then) will try diminish FF's influence & give credit to other bands but the fact remains this album had a considerable commercial impact when it came out (aided by the Mortal Kombat soundtrack) therefore had the farthest reaching influence. Nobody said FF single handedly invented the wheel. Other bands dabbling in similar ideas were nowhere near as popular. Meshuggah's first album only came out in 1995. Was it good? Yes. Did it influence people? Those that heard it, yes. But it didn't make much of a splash at the time. They only started gaining a sizeable fanbase in the early 2000s. Then their early work started getting retroactive appreciation from more people. This is not a popularity contest by the way, I'm merely stating how actual influence works.

    • @FilipeG96
      @FilipeG96 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ZeBubba Meshuggah pre-1995 was alot thrashier and sounded more like AJFA-era Metallica (also the extent of interlocked kick/guitar patterns was essentially the same as Metallica's by that point, yet no one claims that Metallica started djent). Either way Fear Factory's debut album was in 1992 and even though it was mostly death metal it had more of that style of riffing even then.
      Meshuggah really only started picking that up properly in Destroy Erase Improve, and still not to the extent that FF did in Demanufacture. And I remember reading somewhere that FF was a big influence on Meshuggah early on, that might have contributed to it.

    Should have at least mentioned that FF was hugely popularized [outside the US] by offering an instrumental version of Demanufacture as "Carmageddon" PC game's OST, pretty much the same way NIN got lots of attention after being featured in Quake. Not until 5 years later i was able to see FF records sold in a music shop at all, and to this days for almost everyone i know FF remains "that band that did Carmageddon music".
    As for "clean vocals" claim at 7:25, well, they should've been listening to metal outside Bay Area stuff. Bands like Paradise Lost, Samael, Tristania, even Emperor (and the whole lot of gothic, sympho and pagan metal bands) have already started doing that by the time FF did it on Obsolete.

    I’ll never forget hearing Fear Factory for the first time. I was walking up the steps at Red Rocks in probably ‘94 or ‘95 for my first show ever (Megadeth with Korn, Flotsam & Jetsam, and FF opening) when I heard them launch into Self Bias Resistor. Some of most punishing shit I’d ever heard with the guitars and kick drums pounding, and then all of a sudden I hear Burton hit the clean chorus - I was just blown away, I had never heard anything even remotely close to it. Been a fan ever since 🤘

I've been following them since I first heard 'Martyr' on a compilation album called 'At Death's Door 2'. I've lost count how many times I've seen them live. They don't get near enough credit for laying the groundwork for a lot of today's music, especially mixing melodic/clean vocals with growling/yelling. I was at Fear Factory show shortly after the release of Mechanize. In between songs Burton addressed the crowd jokingly inquiring what song they should play next. Someone yelled "PissChrist" so loudly that Dino heard it and he played the first 4 bars then stopped. That's the closest I ever got to hearing it live! 😒

    Demanufacture for me is an incredible album at a time when I was listening to Pantera a lot. I listened to zero Signal on a Total Guitar CD and it blew my mind!!! went out, bought the album and was just utterly shocked at the tightness and brutality of the music. And I LOVED it!! Any band that can cover Gary Numan's Cars gets my vote for sure!! (Yes I know that's on Obsolete.......)

    Demanufacture was introduced to me when I was 10 years old in 1996 from my older cousin. Holy shit, that’s what got me into FF, And into the Metal world. Pisschrist is totally my favorite track! They are the reason why I’m into bands who switch up their vocals between cleans and uncleans.🤘🏽

    Reely and Fulber had a great influence in the FF sound at the time. Front Line Assembly was peaking with their best output in the early to mid 90s, and their fingerprints are all over it. For anyone who like the industrial metal crossover sound of FF at the time, I highly recommend the FLA album Millenium (1994) which samples Pantera riffs and has a heavy metal vibe to a lot of it. Some of their best work IMO.

    I found out about demanufacture thank to a friend that recognized the instrumental versions from the Carmageddon demo I was showing him on my PC. Only years later I listened to most tracks on music services. In Dec 2015 I mised the 20th anniversary tour in Dublin as I was broken that month, I should have really borrowed some money from friends, I still regret it. Last week I picked up obsolete for 1.50€ and loved it too.

    Fear Factory is the first actual metal band I got into,there was Metallica before that but it's not the same. As a 38 yr old re visiting I can honestly say that without FF bands like Slipknot aswell as many others would not be the same.
    Love it!!!!

    I was a latecomer to Fear Factory having Edgecrusher off Obsolete being the first one I ever heard, but quickly scooped up Demanufacture, Remanufacture, Obsolete, then Digimortal was the first new album I bought immediately after release. Remanufacture is what broadened my taste into EDM. After I got Archetype and Hatefiles, I found a new love in Nightwish and lost track of anything newer coming out.

      No you don’t. I’ve seen FF live many times and I can say without a doubt - and this coming from a truly die hard fan here - Burton is terrible live. He cannot control his roars and he blows his vocals out all the time after about a half hour singing.
      He has a good voice but he NEEDS lessons. When that quote appeared “I became less self-conscious as a singer” yeah, no shit Sherlock!

    I'd already had soul of a new machine.. And I'd give a lesser used body parts for it to have a more modern sound (love the redo of Martyr BTW).
    But I bought the Dynamo compilation album that came out weeks before Demanufacture did purely because it had Self Bias Resistor on it and I just couldn't stop listening to it..
    Their new sound was superb..
    Oh and for them to blow Ozzy Osborne away in 1995 when they supported him was nothing short of mind blowing.

  • @michaelperlovsky874

    I’m sure I’m not a unique snowflake in this, but I feel Self Bias Resister is one of the best and most important metal tunes of all time, much related to a lot of points made in this video. As I get older, I start to realize just how influential it was on me.
