They are really two entirely different units created for two different purposes. Nothing wrong with a DP 24 at all. However, it was intended to be a stand-alone all-in-one recording solution. The Model 12, 24, and 32 are designed to be integrated into modern DAW systems. Yes, the model series can do stand-alone recording, but that is not its primary function. Its strength is in its flexibility to do remote recordings while being able to fly those recordings back into your DAW
via the SD card. Plus, you can use it as a control surface for mixing, which is very nice. I wouldn't bother with the model series if all I were going to do is record onto an all-in-one unit, but if you want an outstanding flexible solution for recording to your DAW then the model series is the way to go.

great video!!! Just a pointer for everyone. BUTTON's only usually have a life cycle of 30,000 . That means once you reach 30k in pushes it has the chance of failing. In some cases you can easily solder in new buttons and sometimes you can upgrade them to higher cycles(What I did with a Roland MC909)

I’ve owned a dp32sd for a few years now. Really enjoyed the machine and have had some excellent recordings on it both solo and with my band. A couple years ago my very old cat went on it and urinated on a part of it (3 channels can’t be recorded onto now but I can still import onto those channels….faders are not easy to move there but usable. I’ve opened the machine up and deoxed it a couple times….helped but still those issues.
That said, I’ve been eyeballing buying the same one again or moving onto the model 24. It’s double the price….
This video is pushing me back to the dp series. I think! Lol.
    Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the comparison, I recently got the DP 24SD to do remote recording, didn't look at the model series much because it was more expensive and I already had a nice DAW and didn't need an interface. I'm completely blown away at the quality of the DP24 so far, I've done some complete productions on it that are comparable to what I can do in my DAW. With the export feature I can just take the tracks directly out of the DP24 and into my MAC, so it's almost as good as an additional interface. From looking at the basic setup of the Model series, I think I prefer the DP24 due to it's ability to adjust affects parameters, tweak compression, amp simulation, etc. As for sound quality, I'm finding the sound of the DP24SD just fine for tracking and mixing small projects. I'm doing a lot of my work on the Tascam now and not even using my DAW unless the project gets bigger or I decide it needs some high end plugins during mixing or mastering.

I had the same experience as this guy but with the DP-02. I’ve had it for 10 years and made many recordings on it. Him and I had that same issue with the buttons, but I find it interesting that many of the things he’s pointed out as being a downgrade going from the DP-24 to the Model 24 are upgrades (or at the very least, similar) if you’re coming from the DP-02. I upgraded to the Model 16 recently and absolutely love it.

As a dp-24sd owner, one negative note. The buttons rattle from my speakers. I have my kali speakers on sound stands on the same table and thought my speakers were blown until I placed my hands on top of the dp-24sd buttons and realized the noise stopped. Very bad vibrating rattling. 👎🏽

I wish I saw this video before I bought Model 12. I owned DP-32 in the past, later switched to DP-02 and loved it for the simplicity but at one point I wanted more inputs. When Model 12 was announced I was so hyped and waited for it for few months. Now after using it for few weeks I’m disappointed, not because it’s a bad piece of gear but it is so clunky to use as Multi Track Recorder. It is a mixer first and foremost and I should’ve realized it before.
Right now I’m looking at used DP24 offers and I might sell Model 12 to buy a DP.
I like that Model 12 has MIDI, Bluetooth, Tap Tempo is great, looks absolutely stunning, but overall I think it’s recording capabilities were added as a bonus and DP is still much better in that department.

I was very torn between the two! I ended up ordering a Model 16 today. I see some say just to go with 24sd if you want an all in one. However, the model 16/24 really are also all-in-one. You don't have to go to a daw if you don't want. The UI on the old 24SD is superior IMHO. But, as mentioned, the fact that the 24SD is pretty outdated at this point, well, I think it's worth going Model series. Maybe, Tascam will come up with a modern version of the old 24SD and better screen.. Many of us want to stay the heck out of the daw world!

I think the Model 24 has a bit more "mojo" visually. Turning physical knobs is really fun, I'm sure. But I don't think the price difference should be that big. At least where I'm from the Model 24 is more than twice the price of the DP32. It's insane.

Q 1.) How does the Zoom R24 compare to these two Tascam units?
Q.2) Why didn't Tascam 24 include a metronome and INDIVIDUAL phantom power for each track and why is the screen so tiny on the 24? If this is so much of an advanced unit why couldn't Tascam include these things...not to mention that Zoom R24 has much more mastering effects than Tascam.
It seems Tascam has some things right but they don't address the needs of a complete STAND-ALONE unit. I hate DAWs and the stupid menu surfing that buries your creativity and I'm looking for a total stand alone unit (without myriads of menu surfing) that NO COMPANY has come out with!
Q.3) Why won't any company make a unit that has EVERYTHING (including a full 24 channel level, eq, aux section for each track so you can see ALL 24 tracks at a glance like the old mixers you'd use with reel to reel)??? I get so pissed off about all of this. Am I forced to go back to reel to reel and old timey mixing board??? LOL!!!

---- Closest I got was this mixer in my thumbnail of the mixer (left) which is Korg D16XD - great DSP, touchscreen, digital out, usb, midi, waveform scrub function, analog AD converters, just a great well made machine.
It's like every company has stopped making them robust, and as feature filled. They've cut right back. The old Tascam 2488 had a vga output for a monitor as well as midi in/out which has recently been stripped bk.

Ya. Even Zoom are degrading too lol. Their best was the MRS1608 , very large screen, full of effects, playable finger drumming pads that could be recorded "Live", not just for pattern input, it was a real 12 finger playing sensative pad machine on board + the ususal pattern bank as the Zoom R24. It had everything. Metal chassis , midi in and outs, 16 tracks with 8 virtual tracks on each.
      Made in Japan...
Everything was quick, no loading hourglass, no glitches, nice mastering options, CD burner, USB out.

There is an iPad and iPhone app called “XDRUMMER” it only cost $10 it will learn what you are playing and sync to your guitar in real-time ..then just record it and transfer it to your tascam via Bluetooth or plug headphone out of iPad or phone and transfer to your daw. If you do not have Bluetooth Zzounds has a Bluetooth gadget that transmits Bluetooth to any audio device. I use a an iPad with a Spark amp and fishman iconnect midi pick up...It is crazy man bass and drum track plays along with spark amp virtual band then my crazy iconnect pickup kicks in with two layered sounds like strings and an distorted electric guitar..then I can still run my clean guitar out..so I end up with 5 instruments playing at once but it is only on two tracks coming out into daw but surprisingly it comes out mixed really well with not much tweaking needed. I like using the spark cause it has a bass and drums..which I have to play and spark learns song then replays it...but the XDrummer plays along with you live...I wish it would have a longer learn feature so I could do like some zeppelin like songs so song has slow parts then crescendos ..I think is the word..like song rises and falls..

I just found this excellent comparison - I too have a DP24 and I agree with all your observations. They are capable of very high quality recordings, even though the functionality is a bit limited by modern standards. These days I use Cubase but I continue to use the DP24 as a mixing desk to capture the multiple sources from microphones and keyboards into my midi interface. I could do with more channels - the 8 inputs on the DP24 means I have to repatch sometimes but it's no great hardship. You have not made the case for me to move on to the Model 24 so thanks for that. We'll stay as is for now. Thanks for your thoughtful and considered comparison.

I have the Tascam DP32 and would agree that its a great piece of kit. However I have a live studio/rehearsal room at home and wanted a decent mixer for live 4-piece band rehearsals and possibly quick on the hoof recording of ideas and demos. The Model24 does this great but where both the 24 & Model16 differ from the later Model12 is that unlike the smaller unit, they cannot be used as dedicated DAW interface controllers for all channels. The Model12 can so don't make the same expensive mistake I made!

Thanks for the comparison. I just got a model 24 and am struggling to find out if it can export individual tracks to a PC like the dsp could (either through USB or inserting sd card into PC). Is this possible? I have not been able to find anything on that ability in the manual or online.

Just some coments about the Model 24 I';ve been using for 8 months. 1. The faders do not control the volume of the recording. You can't bring the volume up and down and have it recorded that way. 2. The gain knob is supposed to control that but sound still "leaks" even at zero. 3. After recording, if you press the stop button twice, too quickly, you'll get a write error on the SD card. You press it twice to stop recoding and return the counter back to 00:00:00. You must pause between presses to allow it to write the music.
Other than those issues, I love the mixer and the fact it can also record.

The faders do control the volumes of each track for your master file they do not when doing the first take but when your tracks are all recorded all the settings like eq, reverb etc.your slider volumes will be sent back to those tracks when you hit the master record button, rewind to 0 and export the song, then import it and all will be there. .

I enjoyed your video. The way I see the need to purchase the Tascam Model 24 is either treat yourself to a great machine (as you said, congratulations! By the way), or your studio needs are making new demands on your studios production functions. However, the 24SD is great machine. I own them both!
I just received the Tascam Model 24, and I have owned the 24SD for a few years. On the 24SD I never had problems with buttons failing to connect. The 24SD is a bullet proof machine! Honestly, it sounds like you received a bad unit. You mentioned you had problems from the beginning.
A 24SD owner only needs to upgrade to the Tascam Model 24 if your studio needs to use MIDI, Timecode, Sync, Chase and timing; and finally, the Tascam Model 24 enable the audio engineer the ability send all Model 24 track into their computer Digital Audio Workstation (DAW/ like Protools). The computer DAW can refine the mix and the the DAW routes all tracks back to the Model 24 using the Tascam as a full on mixing console, with a Master Timecode Output thru the USB Port enabling the DAW to solve large problems like chase lock and Sync, which is where the muscle of the Tascam Model 24 resides.
My needs grew into video T/C blah blah blah. Good luck and enjoy your machine. Jesus Christ loves you, and he died for you and resurrected so that you could live forever with him. Best wishes.!

Before watching this video…my mind was made up. It was either the DP 24, which I had my eye 👁 on for a long time and I almost purchased it, and also the Model 24. A friend was trying to sell me on the Zoom Livetrack and I almost relented. I thought $699.00 or whatever it cost was more than I wanted to spend. So now I’m looking at spending $999.00, but the way I figure, why waste money on something that I’ll regret later. So I’m sold on the Model 24…I’ll just have to save the money and be patient. Thank you for this video and advice.

No problem here with the Dp24sd's button , work very well . I think you don't have to switch the "Live mode" to "MTR mode" if you record only in Multitrack with the model24, just keep in MTR mode and press the REC button on each channel you want to hear .So by this way , the model24 behaves exactly with the Dp24sd's in MTR mode , no need to switch .
This is what i understand of the model24's pdf .
I recommend you to try ...
I have a question concerning the model24 , can you record simply a stéréo track in "Live Mode" anytime you press the REC button of the recorder like a normal recorder ?
    Thanks

I am late to the party, but thanks for a great comparison. I have been lusting after a 12 but maybe the DP-24 would suit me better (as I prefer stand alone recording).

But I thought the Tascam DP is not a DAW? I thought you could only transfer tracks to a computer with the DP? Now I am really confused LOL. Only reason I want to buy Tascam 16 is because of the Bluetooth integration and DAW control. The biggest mistake I have found is that None of these work with an IPad . Which is a mega bummer.

    Hi everyone
I’m a singer/songwriter who plays mostly acoustic guitar and a concert grand piano. I also have a Korg Triton Pro-X I’d like to record. Currently have Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 and Logic Pro X on Mac. Would like a more hands-on system that has a less steep learning curve. Which platform would be best for me: Model 24, Model 12, 24sd, 32sd, or just stick with Logic Pro X and just somehow figure out how to make the damn thing work.

      I can’t thank you enough.
I needed someone to say essentially (if I may paraphrase): “even though everybody is using a DAW with their computer, that they are spending too much time trying to learn Logic Pro and it takes away from my real skill and desire, which is to compose and record”. I am glad that I’m not the only one who finds the DAW sound to be the “fake news” of music. As songwriters we only have so much time to nail it down before we lose the train of thought or feeling.
You are right that all the truly great songs were recorded way before the digital age. I like the Tascom platform too. The 12 has a MIDI input but there must be a way to record from a MIDI to the Model 16 or 24.
Thank you again, dear friend. Hope to hear you on the charts someday!

Very useful video thanks very much for this!! I recently bought a mint condition dp24sd and have been VERY impressed with it so far, I expected the model 24 to be on another league but your video seems to confirm it's more of a horses for courses scenario, with the model 24 probably more suited to live mixing + tracking duties (hence the rugged construction I guess) and the 24sd sticking to the "home studio" role and doing it very well so far. All the best and and rock on pal!!!
