How proud I am to have been associated with NSU. In fact, I once did a half town performance for the homecoming game back in the early eighties with them. I pIayed "Amazing Grace" and also remember them being drilled like they were in the army! Flawless!
I love these years of the Legion. There wasn't band around with better transitions between songs or announcer or slow song selection. Pure Excellence. Go Mr. Fears.
This is Legendary. When I got there in 91 it was the same. Everyone who exprerienced the Chief/ Walker years have a deep love for this that others can't comprehend. Chewy MDFS 1991-1994
I want to see some 85’- 86’ footage myself. That’s the Legion that recruited a lot of us in the late 80’s early 90’s. Rookie classes 1987-1992. No other band program I know that the message is always found in our music. Truly the best of the best musicians and those who came to NSU not knowing how to play became beasts over night. Chief, Alize Walker Rogers Brown James Staten Inez Longhorn Howard This was the Dream Team of that era at NSU. Can not forget Lynnberg Erante Carlson and Gore these were some awesome legendary instrumental instructors at NSU. I can not mention all of these greats and not mention Paul I Adams for composing the mostly requested band song ever created “BEHOLD THE GREEN & GOLD” NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY MARCHING SPARTAN LEGION BAND THEME SONG. We were recognized then and are continually being recognized as THEE UNDISPUTED BEST BAND IN THE LAND. THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY MARCHING SPARTAN LEGION BAND IS SOUND PERSONIFIED.
do you hear those fuggin multiples?? the tonal basses are beasting!! good lawd hamerci. why i hadta be born in '87? i would want to be apart of this. NSU is the shit. back then beasts. now, BEASTS.
YES GRAMBLING was very much caught off guard... the year was 85-86... I was there on the Drumline playing Quads... It was so funny that Grambling drummers didn't want to battle with the percussionist of Norfolk State University Million Dollar Funk Squad... that year as I remember it a bunch of drumlines played on the field for battle only to turn and leave when it was our turn to take the field... Johnson C. Smith started that rudness.
The nostalgia of this era sends chills....Even though I am a VSU alumni, my brother performed in this video and my daughter was in the Legion in the 2000s and I will always love this band. Behold!
Man this brings back memories good ol Hovey Field and the Gold Bowl Classic. I was a member of VUU Marching Band and I had friends in the Spartan Legion....I'm loyal to VUU but NSU had a killer brass section
You are right. Go Mr. Fears!!! His years were the years that Percision Personified, Awesome, Excite Excel Exceed, Excellence By Any Means Necessary, Take No Prisoners, and the main one BEHOLD was held no truer than during his years because his Legion was a band to that you DID NOT want to see come into YOUR stadium!!!
My senior year of high school graduated June of 1990
So many memories. Thank you for posting this Gem.
