    After having to drive for an hour to find Sculptamold at an art shop, I was happy to find your video about how to make your own. Thank you!

    Something not covered is the cost of materials...
    * Toilet paper you're likely going to buy a pack explicitly to make your batch of sculpt-a-mold, since scrap toliet paper generally ends up literally in the toilet, so no recycling. Cheap, but you're still buying it.
    * Newspaper: can't really buy in the store, and you're very likely to just use recycled. For those who still get newspapers, this is probably a great option... but a lot of us no longer get newspapers.
    * Egg shell cartons: Like the newspaper, no real option to just buy this directly from a store, but for some folks it will be an obvious recycle requirement regardless. Way more likely you're going to have access to it nowadays than newspaper too. However, not all eggs are packaged in this material, & you need to eat a lot of eggs to get a sizable amount. So again, great option if you have a ready source.
    * Printer Paper - NO, just NO. Printer paper is extremely expensive, & there are better (in terms of economy) uses for it than making home-made modeling paste. The absolute worst in terms of cost of materials
    * Cardboard: And here is where this otherwise substandard material shines, because pretty much everyone has some form of constant cardboard waste... especially if we expand the definition to cereal box material or the stuff more like chipboard. I'll be using this method because I have literally stacks of cardboard saved up that I need to get rid of.

    04:00 You mention that you use 1 cup (?) of plaster in each bag. I must have missed somewhere the amount of paper in a bag to get the correct ratio of paper-plaster.

    As you mentioned there are lots of recipes for DIY Sculptamols, and mine is to use blown insulation as the base. It’s a green material as it’s essentially shredded paper and it saves me a lot of time from having to shred the materials. It comes in a big bale that cost $11 US and I’ve had for a decade now and I still haven’t made a dent in it. Really enjoyed your build. Cheers!

    I was beginning to think you had run away as you seemed to be missing for so long. Another fabulous video which will save all of us a lot of time experimenting.
    For me, I like your approach. You do not seem to be vastly experienced and condescending in your presentation. You are in a learning curve just like the people who watch you. Like you I also watch a few other people but I find your down to earth approach very refreshing. I also find it great that you seem to look for the cheaper ways to get things done as opposed to some of the guys who seem to be either sponsored by the manufacturer of scenic materials or to be so rich that they can go out and buy whatever they want whenever they want.
    Keep up the good work. For the future how about creating some moving motor vehicles on the roads compatible with HO or N gauge without using commercially available products. I am experimenting with printer cable carrier chain. My problem is finding and fixing the motor to drive it.

      Hi, thanks for taking the time to leave such a nice comment! I will do my best to upload more regularly in the future. I have basically no money to buy stuff for the videos, so I have to come up with all sorts of alternative options to achieve what I want... Hopefully one day I'll make some money from my videos... but I'm doing TH-cam because I want to learn new skills and I like to help others! Motorized moving vehicles is definitely something I want to do. But that will be a huge project, I think I might do it next year...

  • @MrSlartybartfast42

    Great video and it got me thinking . So the reason why egg box cardboard and news print are the best is that they are the least processed (i.e cheap), they are as close to the virgin wood pulp as you can get (long fibres). Bog roll (kitchen roll) and printer paper are highly processed (short fibres) (ie more costly) . Corrugated cardboard (and similar e.g. brown paper used for protecting breakable items)) can be a mix of everything, it could be a mix of virgin wood pulp, recycled egg boxes, recycled news print, recycled printer paper, recycled corrugated cardboard, recycled recycled corrugated cardboard ... recycled recycled recycled recycled ... recycled corrugated cardboard (all cheap but with increasing levels of processing). You get the picture.
    You did miss out one ingredient and that is clay.
    Now if you think about the name of the product Sculptamold (a mix of plaster, clay and wood based fibres), it is trying to be two things, something you can sculpt and something you can mould.
    Now whilst you can mould something using either plaster or slip (liquid clay), you cant sculpt something out of plaster as it sets too quickly.
    The three ingredients of Sculptamold provide three different things:
    Wood based fibres - lightness and strength
    Plaster - rapid curing
    Clay - a level of sculptability (before curing occurs)

    What about using cotton balls as the pulp? It would be archival too, since the best paper is made of cotton?

    • @cchemmes-seeseeart3948
      @cchemmes-seeseeart3948 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better yet, old clothes? I bet that would work. Cut them to shreds while watching tv, having coffee/ tea, doing other things. Then cut the shred cross wise. Or you could use a roller cutter on a mat or cardbd. Then blend mini pieces. It would be more archival/ less acidic than cardboard, newspaper, egg cartons ,cellulose insulation which are all very acidic & become brittle.They put nylon fibers/ polyester, in products like concrete.

    • @cchemmes-seeseeart3948
      @cchemmes-seeseeart3948 ปีที่แล้ว

      And also lint from the dryer.

    • @cchemmes-seeseeart3948
      @cchemmes-seeseeart3948 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the same way they make plaster bandage, you could probably use old clothes just dipped in plaster (or maybe modified, fortified plaster or similar compound), to start building forms, rather then turning the clothes to pulp. And then build on that base.

      I have used cotton balls, but dipped in acrylic modelling paste, not plaster, but only on a small scale, as a filler for a foam sculpture project, using styrofoam coated with acrylic modelling paste. I like acrylic modelling paste better than plaster, because it is not so fragile like plaster. (But I hear that you can add acrylic paint to plaster mix, to make it a bit stronger). I am trying new things like you show, still experimenting for sculpture, because acrylic can get expensive. @@TheCreativeModellerHO

    So it's just plaster of paris powder, whatever paper you shred, and water to make it a goop? Then it dries?
    I just want to know how to make sculptamold because it's probably a lot cheaper than buying it ready-made.

    It would have been nice to see the dried results. But besides that it's a very good video.
