I want to find out if SSD performance would be hit by M4 Mac Mini having only one flash module?

I’ve been dailying a base M2 for the last year and it’s been solid. I’ll probably jump on the M4 base, especially as it has 16GB RAM now, and add fast external drives as needed.

Also just 10 performance Cores compared to 16 on the M1 ultra. I will patiently wait for the next Studio. I hope they don't discontinue it and introduce just a Mac Pro. I really like the form factor.
Lets not forget that using Final Cut Pro and Logic , these App's insist on having certain things on the system drive. 1TB system drive is the minimum in that case. Just a thought.

@@yaaxarr8977 Yup, plus the M4 will get macOS updates for about 2-3 years longer. The M2 will be dropped by new OS updates in a few years which a lot of people don't think about.
No props for Apple finally giving us what we should have had all along especially only 8gb ram base for years. This is the only upgrade worthy for Apple this year although not perfect. All other upgrades released by Apple in 2024 were minimal and not worth any attention, hopefully they will do better next year
Curious to see if the SSD speeds compare favorably to M4 MB Pro's. Most will likely upgrade the base to 512GB storage so it would be interesting to see how SSD speeds look.
Question! I am a film editor who was looking to upgrade to a new Mac Studio M2 Max with 64gb ram and 1tb ssd, but now with the release of the mac mini M4 pro I am not sure which one to get! If I max it to 48gb ram and 1tb ssd its actually cheaper than the Mac studio aswell! What you think? :) Thanks!
Performance will most likely be similar. The M2Max might be slightly better in the lab, but most folks wouldn't be able to tell the difference hands on. The M4Pro will likely get you a little bit longer support life.
If the price was the same for the same computer with a 1TB drive it would be a good deal, but 256GB is stupid at a time when a professional 2TB SSD cost $170.
I've been using my S21 Ultra in Dex Mode as a computer for a few months and it's been an overall excellent experience but I am seriously thinking of selling it for a reasonable price, and buying this. The *only* reason I never bought a Mac Mini in the past is because I didn't want to pay for a monitor, mouse, etc on day one but since I have all of it already? $600 is now looking like a steal that provides me the actual computer power I need and at a much smaller format since I don't have a large desk.
This will be my first new Mac since the M1, and having an M1 iMac has helped me prepare for this machine in a way, in that I've already picked up USB-C peripherals and hubs that I will be able to plug into this mini. I'll even be trading the iMac in to get a discount on it. I also really like that sort of mini Mac Studio aesthetic. If there is one additional feature that would be nice to have, it would be color choices instead of just the plain silver, but it looks cool either way. Glad the base RAM is finally 16 gigs, but not digging Apple's choice to keep making 256 GB of storage the baseline option and charge such large amounts to increase that. It's how they secretly price every Mac a lot higher than you'd think, since most people are not going to settle for 256. It's not even large enough to install a decent set of apps these days.
Hey Greg! Finally, the Mac Mini, I’ve waited 10 years for. Perhaps you can help me out. I think the Pro is overkill, though amazing. So, if going for the non-Pro. Do you think 512GB is needed for speed / swap file size (remember, also the issue with M2 MacBook Air 256GB throttling issue)? Do you think 24GB is needed? I find my 16GB M2 4x4 8 Core MBA 256GB to be serviceable but not a rocket ship. Would you go with the $599, $799 or $999 Model for routine (some video editing) use? Thanks bro!
Not sure on the speeds yet for the drive, 512 is a reasonable upgrade tho if you need it and if you’re current Mac is maxing the 16gb, the 24gb would be worth it
M2 had the issue with the 256 GB drive was handicapped. Only tests will tell if this drive has the same issue. If the 256 has the same R/W as the 512, then meh. Only would get 512 IF you need the internal storage.
@@GregsGadgets Thank you for the quick reply! I’m so stoked to get this, I want to order, right away! I don’t need th extra internal space as will be so easy to use a multi TB SSD. I just ordered one! I haven’t purchased a brand new Apple computer from Apple since I worked there in the 2000’s! $500 if you’re an education customer is a good deal. (Tip: Apple doesn’t verify if you’re a student/educator so uhhh….😉)
I’m not really sure why the size is so important for a desktop computer. My M1 Mac mini is so light that I can’t use the ports without having to hold it down with my other hand to stop it moving around the desk.
Some quick research. 20-40% of the electricity used by power supplies is converted to heat. The Mac mini M1 consumes 39W when running. Why would you design the Mac mini M4 with the PSU right above the CPU and motherboard like a grill, toasting the electronics, when Apple could have used an external power supply like they have with the iMac? When you add unnecessary heat into an enclosed space, you add to the power load (and thus more heating) to run fans and a cooling system. Also heat rises. Let it out the top. Don't force it downwards past the CPU.
Exactly my thought, but I bet paring it with a dock that offers more slots and options could be better than enough, with the fact that they are still using SD card 2.0 and it's pretty slow. I suffer with transfer of video and photos on my MBP 16 with that slow slot.
@@andreasboesch9922 Yeah feels like they could have had that in there. I had a 2018 Mac mini and it didn't have it so I guess thats been their way but it was on the 2014. I guess they figure people interested in photography will either have adapters by now or direct connect or wifi connect modern cameras.
I wonder how the internal storage chips are laid out? That might impact file i/o. Looks like an amazing machine. I can’t blame you for your enthusiasm. 😊
And the perfect companion monitor? Hey my friend, I just picked up two of the Samsung S9 Viewfinity displays for $650 each on Amazon. They are 5K displays! They are the perfect combo with any Mac these days. Can’t beat 5K for $650.
Glad apple finally shrank the Mac mini! I have a feeling they’ve been dragging out this redesign as long as possible bc the M1 logic board could have a good shrink with lot of black spaces lol
Apple is very successful in this field. I have a PC that is like a tank next to me. It has an annoying sound, 10 fans, and water cooling. It cost me an amount of money and is considered a little old since 2018. This little monster comes with a performance that outperforms it and makes me order it in advance without thinking and leave that tank for games and use this monster in montage. I also hope that Apple will enter the field of games strongly. It can really compete strongly.
Now this is a real upgrade and more. I don't need one now, but in about a year I have a computer that will be time to replace and this will be a excellent replacement. The Pro version should handle my audio projects great with 10 performance cores. I think will be the best news of the week.
Can’t decide if I’m going with the pro version. I certainly don’t need it but maybe it cool if Mac gets more games and thunderbolt 5 is good for..?(except 8k screens)
Be aware, the base model M4Pro is 1400 bucks (24GB RAM, 512G storage). Value may be a question given a Studio. And some very questionable design decisions... like putting the line audio out on the front when it should be on the rear (how many people do you know with external sounds systems with their computers?). Most odd is putting the power button not only underneath it, BUT under one of the rear corners. STILL bumping up to 16G at the same price is huge... I won't use a computer without at least 1T storage built in, so bumping to 16G/1T used to be 1200, but now it's a cool grand. Yeah, I'm getting one in a few months or less.
If you're actually a pro or enthusiast with external speakers, you'll have an external DAC or control board plugged into the back via USB. The front headphone jack is for headphones. It's convenient.
iPad doesn't have antivirus protection. I got hacked on mine. They were using my camera and told me to 'Slow Down'. Stick with what you can put AV on, I say.

Do I have to have a Mac display in order to use the Mac mini or can I just use my existing monitor from AOC? im not too fussed about quality just speed and performance for my video editing and photo editing?
Does it have HDMI? If yes then yes.
@@atgred yes it does, but can I also use a display port cable that I have a USB c adapter for?
Yes you can use your adapter.
Any HDMI display 1080p or greater.
Confused if I need to go for a M2 PRO or M4 base model ?
M4 base - AI , raytracing, similar or more power , more compact etc
@@Hansmusiclofi Thanks! you´re right ! M4 base with 521GB, correct? I m regular user and I still have an 2013 iMac and need to upgrade it now.
@@yaaxarr8977 Yup, plus the M4 will get macOS updates for about 2-3 years longer. The M2 will be dropped by new OS updates in a few years which a lot of people don't think about.
Looks great. Hope it doesn’t have that high pitch fan noise the Mac Studio had. I swapped mine for a MBP because of it.
Is MBP noisy ? ( I’m doing music production )
@@salut9658 No very quiet. The Mac Studio was noisy and had a high pitch whine. At least for my ears.
@ ty 🙏
@@JackieDElia its a coil whine. my one had the same issue but after few months of use it went away.
That’s good to know.
No props for Apple finally giving us what we should have had all along especially only 8gb ram base for years. This is the only upgrade worthy for Apple this year although not perfect. All other upgrades released by Apple in 2024 were minimal and not worth any attention, hopefully they will do better next year
Using a high wattage USB-C charger, can you power it using a Thunderbolt port instead of the kettle lead? If so, that will be a game changer.
great deal but whats the catch?
Curious to see if the SSD speeds compare favorably to M4 MB Pro's. Most will likely upgrade the base to 512GB storage so it would be interesting to see how SSD speeds look.
For the general computer user, I think Apple hit it out of the park with the new Mac Mini, especially at this price point.
1 TB
Apple will provide that after 10 years
I've been using my S21 Ultra in Dex Mode as a computer for a few months and it's been an overall excellent experience but I am seriously thinking of selling it for a reasonable price, and buying this. The *only* reason I never bought a Mac Mini in the past is because I didn't want to pay for a monitor, mouse, etc on day one but since I have all of it already? $600 is now looking like a steal that provides me the actual computer power I need and at a much smaller format since I don't have a large desk.
Base model is excellent, shame that it's such a massive leap in price to get additional GPU performance.
It’s basically a mac mini studio.
Why are all you tech reviewers producing thumbnails that suggest you have the new one in hand, and that this is actually a review!
So, you are thinking what I’m thinking… give the $799 a spin with 24GB and 256GB. Are you going to get the Pro with the 30 total Cores? What crazy amount of ram are you going to put into that baby?
@@JamesBond-fo6ow Thanks for the reply! I was only thinking 512 might be good for the swap file if my iCloud / Dropbox storage got too large on top of whatever junk I’ve got on the internal, but if I’m more disciplined to offload to SSD, it should be fine, provided AI, won’t need more onboard storage? Presume the 20 total Cores and 24GB of ram should do the trick. Ya?
I have a Late 2015 iMac 27" i7 with 500GB SSD. I do photography and video editing and have the Adobe apps and Davinci Resolve along with lots of other smaller apps. I'm only using 75 GB of space with most of my drive free even after 9 years of use.
I just ordered one! I haven’t purchased a brand new Apple computer from Apple since I worked there in the 2000’s! $500 if you’re an education customer is a good deal. (Tip: Apple doesn’t verify if you’re a student/educator so uhhh….😉)
Can you explain difference in design as it's not visible without microscope.
Why couldn't they add a memory card slot?? Otherwise, a great deal.
Exactly my thought, but I bet paring it with a dock that offers more slots and options could be better than enough, with the fact that they are still using SD card 2.0 and it's pretty slow. I suffer with transfer of video and photos on my MBP 16 with that slow slot.
like an SD card slot?
@@chilled99
Yes. Right, that's what it's called.
M4 + 16GB and my education discount brings it to $499. That’s a lot of computer for the price.
I really love this new design!!
Love new, shiny things but once you put it under your desk, it's just like the M2 really. Normal users wouldn't know the difference
9:48 The Mac mini with M2 Pro did offer 8TB storage, that was the first one
I wonder how the internal storage chips are laid out? That might impact file i/o. Looks like an amazing machine. I can’t blame you for your enthusiasm. 😊
Does this translate too : MacBook Pro M4 Max 28cpu/40gpu/32npu???
The price for what you get is the best deal for a computer right now 600$ gets you alot
And the perfect companion monitor? Hey my friend, I just picked up two of the Samsung S9 Viewfinity displays for $650 each on Amazon. They are 5K displays! They are the perfect combo with any Mac these days. Can’t beat 5K for $650.
I've seen some pretty bad reviews for that monitor though sadly.
Just about to ask what are the monitors recommend or use currently
On the budget range....lower end 😏
@ works perfectly for me!
Would have been super sweet if the $600 mini came with the 512 SSD.
Loving the power button on the bottom.
Can I expect some gaming performance
(They mentioned gaming in their ad)
It’s wild how I paid $2500 cad for an M3 MacBook Pro with 16GB/512GB and now $700 gets you 16GB RAM 😢 glad its finally happening tho😊
lol oof apple products should have good resell you can sell it before people relizse that the m4 makes it less value lol
Your MacBook Pro has a beautiful high-end display, keyboard, trackpad, a battery, and can go on vacation with you. It is worth the price difference.
I wonder about ssd chips. Did they made same shitty stuff with one-chip solution like they did with previous releases?
Now this is a real upgrade and more. I don't need one now, but in about a year I have a computer that will be time to replace and this will be a excellent replacement. The Pro version should handle my audio projects great with 10 performance cores. I think will be the best news of the week.
finally affordable before users give up on hardware hopping after they abandon it
The button is at the bottom of the machine and the whole mini has to be raised slightly just to press that button. One small negative for me.
User error. Have not used AV on any PC in 20+ years and never got hacked.
