I was literally watching jimi play this last night. And really puts into perspective how gorgeous it truly is. The control he had over every sound coming from that guitar was unreal. An electric alchemist, if you would.
A story that's been told repeated by several ppl- as well as confirmed by some of the ppl there is that one of the great blues guitarists of the day said when he met Jimmi he was playing in this little back room at a studio and he was so intimidated by the sounds Hendrix was getting out of his simple Strat/tube amp setup that he not only refused to even get his guitar out, he stopped playing for almost a year. I can't remember the guitarist, but I remember he was really good- and he did play again and go on to do great things but- apparently meeting Jimmi really shook him up. One reason I believe it is because I can relate to that feeling so well, I've run into ppl that just blew me away and it made me feel the same way- like a complete failure and a fool. It gets easier as you get older though and start letting go of the ego- still sucks though. It will never be easy to run into someone half your age, been playing maybe a 3rd as long as you- and they can just light you up. But that's the way it works- some ppl just have a natural inclination towards it- and others, like me- have to work ourselves to death to even get close to them.
As a teen I watched the Woodstock documentary about 100 times. So when you did hit that fuzz, the Hendrix sound immediately resulted in goosebumps. My favourite.
My favorite rendition is Jose Feliciano did it in the world series of 68. Definitely worth a listen. What's sad is he was blackballed for a long time because it wasn't the traditional way of playing/singing it. Definitely worth the 3 minutes to listen to it!
Things change! Hendrix caught some flak for the mad unorthodoxy of his version back in the day, now people treat the Jimi version as an important work of American Art the Troops can all be proud of.
I am predominantly a banjo picker but I really like the Metallica version. In fact I like it so much that I am going to buy myself an electric guitar so I can play it with my nephew who just graduated from High School. He has joined the Navy so I have a little time to get ready. Maybe in a few years we can open some High School sporting events.
When I was 12 years old, about two or three years after Hendrix passed, I snuck into a theater to see Woodstock. I was an enormous fan, but it being the early 70s, I'd never seen a video of Hendrix before. I waited through the three hour movie for Hendrix. Then,,, I'd never imagined such music could exist. It was more powerful than I dreamed possible. There had simply never been anything like it before. Half a century later, I still get chills when I hear it. Allow me to share a thought. The Woodstock festival was the final expression of a tumultuous and revolutionary decade in US history (and occurred within a month of the Apollo 11 moon landing - ironic how rock music and the infancy of space exploration coincided). And at the climax of this celebration of peace and love, Hendrix improvises the most violent interpretation of the national anthem possible. He reminded the hippie generation of the kind of world that waited for them when they returned to their lives. At the same time, he stood on the world stage, looked the most powerful nation on earth in the eye and said "You broke your covenant with God and your people." Now, every electric guitarist should learn it - or more specifically, learn from it. It's a necessary part of our education. I thank you for your demonstration. And in my youth, I spend a long time learning how to recreate it. But now I won't play it anymore. I still love and respect it as much as I always did, but I realized that it doesn't belong to me. It only belongs to Hendrix. Nobody else could carry that cultural symbolism.
Love the call out to Bach with Hetfield and Hammet. Took me back to my studies! Also, love the channel. I need to get back to playing and when I do, I'm coming here for tips!
Hey Tyler I loved the Hendrix version! Watching you play it I felt like you really had fun and it reminded me of being a kid just being so happy to crank up the amp and dive the whammy bar! The only difference is you actually sounded good! Lol
I have to agree. I actually used that version in my retirement ceremony from the Marines. It just lasts so long and I thoroughly enjoyed making the officers stand at attention for so long. ;-)
I like this. I’d use a slightly microphonic pickup, and put not too much grease over the sound. And the weird timing pauses and lags Jimi Hendrix added are what makes this… allow some dramatic accentuations.
To be honest you did a helluva job making that strat talk...it's yours and the closest to the Great Jimmy Hendrix from what I've seen...Jimmy made it sound like gunfire and bombs dropping during fills, throughout the song and you did a heck of job with your tradition of the Star Spangled Banner...My son is a Marine and hearing this would make him fill back at home cause Ive played since I picked my pops guitar up and that was in the 90s...Salute!!!!, Rock on
@@billmozart7288 I know but it still gives me headaches. I know how incredibly talented he was and he spoke with his guitar doesn’t change what happens to my constant headaches.
it's super innovative, but, the context of it is also what makes it so great, early morning on the last day of Woodstock, the sun is coming up! A Rude awakening to let the semi-conscious masses know the trip is almost over, the weekend Utopia was great while it lasted, but the wheels of the Global Military-Industrial-Defense Complex can't be bothered with flowered headbands, free love, and inner happiness. The gears continue to turn and the Wheels spin on, trampling everything in their path, destroying allies and enemies alike.
My favorite version will probably always be the Boston version. Just a mix of everything I love in a song. It really feels like it's own thing, but it's also pretty faithful to the actual melody.
In F1 on the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix, a whole band played their national anthem. With a backing drummer squad it was so epic. If only all countries had the balls to do thay
That was great! I'm Canadian and still enjoyed these. Jimis was great, and you recreated it very nicely. Jack's would be next for me, then Satriani, the Metallica 0.5
Bernie Williams, former NY Yankee plays it at alot of sporting events. MLB and NBA games. He plays classical guitar, but also uses electric guitars with some overdrive.
Wow, amazing Hendrix version! Jimi was in the military. And he was tight-lipped about the social commentary that is obvious in his rendition. But it is very clearly an anti-war message. And you nailed it! Well done!
I have absolutely zero idea is to what that last song you were playing was. It most definitely was not the "SSB", but it did sound pretty damn cool, whatever it was lol. I like it.
Watching this video in some odd way...made me proud to be American...in a time when the American way is no longer respected and given up piece by piece thru fear and lies...it was very refreshing to watch this...maybe I'm just being sentimental....Or maybe I'm just being grateful!
That Metallica performance is my favorite version, dare I say even more than Jimi’s. Jimi’s version definitely played a bigger part on my deciding to play guitar though.

the tone from his solo in the live video of "the level" is so sick.

Eric Johnson's version from the early 90s may be my favorite.
