  • Starting a brand new free lesson series on TH-cam here focused on How to Practice and showcasing different things that I think about when I am practicing.
    I was working on a transcription for my Patreon when I noticed I was employing one of my tried and true practice methods so I thought I would share a little bit about that here.

    “Bluegrass does not fall into this category” ie. music with a groove, music for dancing. That is a game changer for me.

      I want to clarify the comment a bit because bluegrass is a groove based music BUT the modern tendency is to play smoothly and with an evenness to tone and attack where every note is played with more or less the same intensity. It could still be helpful for bluegrass but I don’t tend to use this approach when practicing bluegrass.

    I learned it as a kid, playing along with 45 records at 33 speed. The trick is to move your WHOLE BODY in slow motion, head to toe. As with "instant replay", in slow motion, every detail becomes visible, every nuance, imperfections etc. It becomes necessary to get comfortable with the human aspect of music, with all of the warts and dandruff, etc. Playing slow is harder than playing fast.

      This is exactly right! That’s a really good way of explaining it!

      Hey this is why tai chi is practiced slowly, from head to toe. It is practiced over and over in slow motion, working on maximizing the perception and conscience of every detail (or groove :-) inside: exactly *because* when used in martial art application it has to be extremely fast!

    I would say you have the metronome set to half-time with the metronome beats falling on 1 and 3. When you are set to 44 BPM, this is really 88 BPM while playing the piece. I do this same thing, but usually with the metronome beats falling on 2 and 4 instead. I love practicing with a metronome set to half-time in this way and also get a lot of good information from it. I think your intention to practice at slower tempos to establish a solid groove is a good way to go.

    I think You are talking about the most fundamental things.
    I do the same with singing or any other activity.
    I also practice Chi Gong which is like slow breathing and slow moving.
    Btw. I've changed the pich of all the music i work to 432 Hz tuning standard.
    I recommend this change to everyone.
    Thank You for Your education.

      If it helps have the metronome play 1/8th notes so there is less time between the clicks!

    @6:40 we discover what instrument you play! lol. I played violin as a kid and thought about learning- OMG are violins expensive! The cheapest electric fiddle was $1000!!! The regular violins started around $3000.

    • @lilliansawyerfiddle
      @lilliansawyerfiddle  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They are super expensive and unnecessarily so!

      @M_SC 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      That absurd, you can buy a violin for $300. Less is garbage. But buy a $1000 one if you can. $3000 is not necessary

    I'm a beginner guitar player and I'm a rusher. I notice that after I start a rhythm a few times through everything seems slower- if I continue at what feels like the same physical pace I'm am going too fast. I mentally have to feel like I'm slowing down to keep the same pace.

    • @lilliansawyerfiddle
      @lilliansawyerfiddle  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I would say that is exactly right! You have feel to like your slowing down to actually play in time! Over time it gets easier and you’ll feel more like you have an internal sense of time that’s just going in the background.

    Why do you feel bluegrass doesn’t have a pulse/groove?

    • @FrenchSissoko
      @FrenchSissoko 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I have the same question. I think bluegrass has an infectious groove.

    • @dwightzinfandel8077

      Drive is different than groove. Bluegrass pushes and drives forward, it doesn't fall back on downbeats.

    I'm confused you say 1/8th note but are in 4/4 - isn't dividing a 1/4 note in 4 a 1/16th?

    • @lilliansawyerfiddle
      @lilliansawyerfiddle  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      4/4 just means that there are 4 beats in each measure and the quarter note gets the beat.

      You are correct. In this video the metronome is set to a half note. 1 and 3.
