I get asked very frequently about how to practice scales and to improve at improvising. Becoming familiar with all your major scales and being able to manipulate them are very powerful ways to get them under your fingers. Unfortunately, there is no quick way to do this. You just have to spend the time doing it and in this video we'll look at a few ways that will force your brain to crunch the s...

    • @lilliansawyerfiddle
      @lilliansawyerfiddle 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I want to clarify the comment a bit because bluegrass is a groove based music BUT the modern tendency is to play smoothly and with an evenness to tone and attack where every note is played with more or less the same intensity. It could still be helpful for bluegrass but I don’t tend to use this approach when practicing bluegrass.

    Hi, hate to be negative but!… not sure what level of player you’re pitching this at, but how is this a “lesson” when you don’t teach the notes of the tune?? P.S. You have a great control of your technique, nice sound and you’re obviously an accomplished musician, but overall this video was dull. Must try harder! Nice playing though 👍🏻🎻

      I appreciate the feedback! The idea is that you’re supposed to learn the tune by ear and that I have slowed it down and broken it into bite-sized chunks to digest. I think my content is currently targeted at people who already have a familiarity with the genre and have some understanding of the fundamentals of it.

      @@lilliansawyerfiddle as a professional musician and violin teacher myself, this method is fine for me. I just think that it’s a big ask for a lot of students to be able to learn a tune by ear. Your control over your fingering hand (I can’t tell whether you’re right or left handed) is incredible and at times it’s like your fingers aren’t even moving, so it’s difficult to even guess where you’re playing. I just think even putting up the sheet music would at least be of use as not everyone can just use their ears. You’re a great player and I wish you all the best. I’m not an internet troll and never comment like this usually but I was compelled as a teacher to ! ☺️

      @@jezking8816 Funny. I came here to say that this lesson was at exactly the right level, exactly in the goldilocks zone for me. I'm barely a beginner at the fiddle (but coming from other instruments), and very much into learning this style of music by ear. Thank you so much. I just wanted to counter the negative feedback a bit. I HATE lessons where tunes are taught note by note. I don't have the patience for those. All to say, for some of us, this was just perfection. I would say you have the metronome set to half-time with the metronome beats falling on 1 and 3. When you are set to 44 BPM, this is really 88 BPM while playing the piece. I do this same thing, but usually with the metronome beats falling on 2 and 4 instead. I love practicing with a metronome set to half-time in this way and also get a lot of good information from it. I think your intention to practice at slower tempos to establish a solid groove is a good way to go.

    I learned it as a kid, playing along with 45 records at 33 speed. The trick is to move your WHOLE BODY in slow motion, head to toe. As with "instant replay", in slow motion, every detail becomes visible, every nuance, imperfections etc. It becomes necessary to get comfortable with the human aspect of music, with all of the warts and dandruff, etc. Playing slow is harder than playing fast.

      Hey this is why tai chi is practiced slowly, from head to toe. It is practiced over and over in slow motion, working on maximizing the perception and conscience of every detail (or groove :-) inside: exactly *because* when used in martial art application it has to be extremely fast!
