There’s only one alternative to head covers to protect such a work of art. 8 different bags and a person per bag to carry them. 7 bags for the irons, 1 per iron, 8th bag for driver, 3 wood, putter etc. job done
They are all beautiful. I personally would not choose a set that looks like something that looks like a top commercial offering like a Titleist or Mizuno. I really like the dark copper Itobori's. I mean go big or go home right?
WOW!!!! I've been a blade player most of my life Mizuno, Wilson Staff (vintage), Ram Golden Ram, Titleist and I wish these! Now I have never understood you UK players not using iron head covers. Why? I like my irons to be coddled. You know what they say a happy iron is a scoring iron and non-shanking! Great video Mr. Finch and Crew. Thank you "so so" much for enlightening us. 'Preesh. PS: I would have to pick the Itobori because each one is like one of a kind. Priceless
The word "Himeji" on the club head gives me goosebumps! The history and heritage of metal forging in that area makes the name "Himeji" sound almost magical and sacred.
Thank you for this reply. A small town close to Himeji in the Hyogo prefecture is home to nearly all of our forgings. It's the nucleus of forging crafts and blacksmithing in Japan. Truly a sacred place!
That call out for the iron having a smooth bottom hammered absolutely killed me off! I was crying for about 4 minutes of laughter! In all seriousness, if I had the budget to be able to afford these irons, I absolutely would get them in a heartbeat. An absolutely beautiful craft of irons!
Congrats to your choice. I was fitted for my itoborys in 21 here in Germany. I got them end of 21. Never used headcovers. But I got mine in Bor finish. That’s pretty hard. You don’t have to. They are forged steel. Not paper. You don’t even see they are well played maybe except from the groves. But once cleaned they are pristine again. An the feel is absolutely awesome. Will never change them.
My current irons are the itobori blades 4-Pw in black boron with rosso Corsa paint fill. Wedges are miuras in chrome 49(bent to 50) 56 and 59(bent to 60). Absolutely butter couldn't be happier with them.
Pete, I haved been a viewer of your channel from the beginning, but I must say you have been through numerous sets of clubs, putters and etc. Even a tour pro doesn't go through as much equipment as you. I tell you the truth when you played with the wood clubs and just junk store clubs, You have shown that if you have the skill you can gold with anything!!. One thing that I have never seen is that you have a youngling that you are teaching and helping them to go from high school, college to pros. that would be a treat to follow!!
We would be as well no head covers ;) In Japanese aesthetics and philosophy, wear marks and imperfections are detrimental to beauty but a sign of appreciation. You most used iron will probably be your favourite.
Very good choice, even if I would have picked the Orion... Regarding headcovers, I use them since I got a set of Endo forged s20c Bridgestone a few years ago. I tried to not use them on my current set of Takomo 301 but well... 3 months in, the headcovers are back. In 3 months my irons are more marked than the Bridgestone had been after 3 years, and honestly as a sunset golfer walking/carrying, the silence granted by the head covers is a real boon. Now, the internet ayatollahs may frown on me, but my iron heads smile on me, the silence follows me, birds and butterflies surround me (and I do hit my irons very very well if I may say so myself ;) ) One thing, though, not all headcovers are equal. Try to find some with an elastic band around the hosel: they stay in place yet get in/out easily. Most standard models tend to fall off the clubs, or if they don't, to be a pain to put on or take off.
I got pretty excited when you mentioned this on the Rough Cut Podcast. I've been building up my own small collection of older (read cheaper) JDM clubs this past year. Have fallen in love with soft Japanese forgings, and researching all the different brands is a lot of fun.
I have a set of nike vr forged pro irons from 2011 that are in damn near perfect condition because of iron covers. Everyone is always amazed at the condition when they see em, gotta protect your product so it lasts longer!
@@MrRoboken We would never compare and rate better or worse. In the end a golf club is a tool. Loved this video! I’m usually a bit of a snob and only really go for commercialised brands from ones used on tour, but some of those irons have to be the most aesthetically pleasing irons I’ve ever seen! So unique! Out of the three, 100% Itobori for me!
I have always been a Titleist everything guy, but once I got fitted for Miura, I honestly do t think I could ever hit any other irons. Now I have two set of cb-301 (1 qpq) and ready to order the cb-302. 🤣
You should not only look at but also try those JDM forged irons, and you'll very quickly forget about the "played on tour" snobbery for the more delightful "absolutely unknown to all but the most purists of purists" snobbery 🤣
I love the look of the hand hammered irons. They should get the best turf interactions. That sole eliminates large flat area just like stealth technology on aircraft eliminates flat surfaces for radar detection.
What a collection.... Love the Makino MB2 but for impact on looks yep your choice is bang on. Head covers, for WOW in the bag appeal then no but for keeping the heads as good condition as possible the yes. If you carry and hear the clanging of heads would that get in your head? What decisions you have had to make.
Not all : ) But well spotted. The Kyoei Forge (not to be mistaken for Kyoei clubs) is mainly producing our raw forgings - but not only the KMC, but in total we are using more than 40 forging dies. I had my entire golf bag, Sim 2 driver, M4 irons, Vokey wedges, and Evnroll putter all stolen from the range today. I'm devastated, but this video has, for some reason made me feel better. Thanks, Pete!
I got a set of iron covers for some Miura cubs I purchased 4 years ago. Main reason for covers is my clubs are in the back seat of my car and they rattle. I used to work at a sound studio and this drives me crazy. I also like the quite on the course. I constantly lost covers until I used this trick. I am short one so as I take that one off I put it on the one that is naked. Not only can people see the iron but it can’t bang around against the others . My wedges get a ninja twist each towel , if I used the same towel it will wear holes in the towel. The forged iron process is tough on the face but not on the back. Look at adam Scots clubs then Miura irons he uses show what will happen after a year of no covers. Cheers
I love both sets of my Miuras but the Itoboris are works of art themselves. Most of the ones Pete tried looked to be Kyoei KCM forgings. I’m looking to get a Smoked Copper set of the KCM Heritage with the 5-cut sole someday. Since Pete’s will probably go in his Ogio Woode 8 Hybrid bag there won’t be any need for headcovers.
Well spotted. Nearly all our forgings come from the Hyogo prefecture and the sacred halls of Kyoei Golf (not be confused with the Kyoei Clubs). After the forging they are sent to our grinding masters at either Orion, Itobori. But not only MB but also Cavity backs etc are forged.
Awesome video. Things of beautiy, I'd go for the Makino personally. Your facial expressions crack me up Pete 😂 intro was brilliant. Sidenote , don't get head covers 😳
the orions are gorgeous, the japanese are awesome at what they call zaratsu polishing, contrasting satin and super high gloss the itabori look imo like you fixed them with an angle grinder
I live in Vancouver Canada, I was able to try the ones you ended up getting, I by no means should EVER play those kinds of clubs, but man did they feel awesome and look even better, If I had your game and was given the oppertunity to get these I would have picke the ones you did in the same finish, just a beautiful set.
I have headcounts but only for transport. Once on the course and removed from a iron I don't replace. Helps I use a trolly though so less clatter. When I have carried just put one hand behind on the irons and that works.

The Orion and Makino are beautiful and too nice to just let them get knocked about and have all that bag chatter on the heads. Yo would be hard pressed to see any bag chatter on the Itobori's
Good choice, Pete. I feel like to go for anything but the itoboris out of those three would've been too similar of a choice or look to the modern mizuno, titleist, or even miura.
Wow wow wooo weeee!!!!! Stunning pier!!!😂 no near as comparable but I have the cobra king coppers. And I have head covers for storage and transport only, on the course they are out
Those Itobori irons look so absolutely beautiful. I would say too beautiful to actually play them. If I had the pleasure owning these, and decide to play these, I would put covers on them, but only if I can manage to get transparent covers which only pad the irons enough to avoid dings and scratches, otherwise I would only cover them for transport.
Japanese forged irons wont magically improve your game; but damn, they do feel buttery smooth when you hit them pure. I was leaning more toward the smooth line blades #2 CGS Orion Himeji x Tsubame. Since these are bespoke irons might as well dress them properly with some custom aluminum ferrules, classic leather grip wraps and color-filled monogram.
Absolute the irons I choose to they look amazing 👌Head covers tho noooooooo ! 🤷🏻♂️ I like the little iron clattering dinks in my irons look used and loved . you will be using pink castle tees next pete 😂😂😂😂

This is unreal! Super excited to see some footage of these around the course.
