    The origin of the name commonly goes back to the Latin scamnum (stool), because the hill on which the historic center was built would resemble a small bench.
    In reality the term is closer to the Abruzzo phytotoponyms scandalo and scannèlla which would indicate the name of a rustic variety of barley or the places where it was grown.
    As can be seen from a Roman plaque preserved in the Wool Museum, Scanno is already inhabited in Roman times, at the northern end of the Samnites' territory.
    An ancient settlement in the Sagittario valley is the *Betifulus pagus*, which has been identified with a minor Peligni center whose fortification was to be located on the southern slopes of the Sant'Egidio hill.
    There is a living testimony of this center in local popular legends, in fact a mythical king of Battifolo fighting against the Emperor of Rome or against the magician Pietro Baialardo appears in a story about the birth of Lake Scanno. An ancient plaque also found in Acque Vive di Scanno recalls a decurion named Betifulo.
    During the barbarian invasions Scanno remained unharmed due to the defensive structure of the mountains around the town, but during the Saracen and then the Ottoman invasions it did not suffer the same fate. In this period Scanno has oriental influences for the women's dress of the country.

    Another beautiful town in the Region of Abruzzo. When you have seen one town in center Italy, you have seen all of them. Same characteristics, architecture, medieval towns, Churches and surrounded by greenery mountains. I love all those Churches in Scanno, they are all stunning. I took great interest in the church of St. John the Baptist. I enjoyed the video. Thanks.

      Thank you Dear Esther, loving very much Abruzzo. I used to go there when I was little with my parents, and this is the first time I'm going and visiting again... I'm finding absolutely gorgeous towns and sceneries. Loved the churches too. Living in central Italy is a blessing I think.. lots of towns to discover around here, many quite unknown to tourists...

    Has Scanno always been this picturesque? I do remember all winding alleys and roads. Oh and the the spots of gardens plus some greenery hanging from balconies. Scanno is more beautiful than I remember. You did a super job on capturing this lovely city. Riccardo you have another vlog and another city that makes me highly jealous of your travels.

      Dear Lawsonartzy, I always don't know how to thank you for your words and comments! At least, as a minimum, I'm just glad you like them , and that we're in contact. It's a small channel in any case, and it's nice to chat between "us" over here like a group of friends.
      I have to be honest actually; I remembered Scanno also as you did. I went there many years ago with my parents, and it looked more "gloomy" and a little "darker", that's what I thought at that time. I found it instead very lively and coloured as well, perhaps it was the summer day, perhaps the tourists around, the shining August sun... but always a very lovely place. Love Abruzzo

    OMG it's like a storybook fairytale. I thought stuff like this that I'd see in pictures was just some imaginative artists renderings but thanks to TH-cam, I find it is real. The sheer beauty is breathtaking. It sends the imagination soaring. Clean and well loved. I kept thinking *where* IS everybody? Where are the children? Then I started thinking of *Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!* 🤣😂I also kept thinking how do people find their way home? I'd be completely lost! Especially at night. LOL! How do they get their mail? All that walking. I couldn't imagine trying to bring groceries home. How would you get them there? Those buildings have to be centuries old and yet they're (still) standing! While America lets theirs fall into disrepair and then tear them down to rebuild new junk in it's place and erasing the history of what once what stood there.😔Thank you so much for sharing!❤

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for such a comment. Indeed oh.. in Scanno it's truly like in a fairytale. A town perhaps known only to "locals" or italians but with time it's being famous also to foreigners as well. Indeed, it could be quite tough to bring groceries and moving between the alleys)) But one gets used to it. Usually in these towns only older generations are still living there,though... in later years, there have been "shifts" in this mentality with younger generations trying to revive them as well.
      Very glad you enjoyed it anyway, and wish you a nice Sunday

    Of all the churches we've wandered through my choice is the simplicity of the Church of St. Antonio Abate (39:21). One person commented that once you've seen one of these little towns you've seen them all. My perspective is different. Although they have similarities, they also have unique characteristics. Some in choosing to use a particular shade of green to paint their fences and frames; another in highlighting a certain plant; still others in the designs in their walkways, etc. Another relaxing walk Riccardo. Thanks again.

      Hi El Toro, oh , Abruzzo is a stunning region. I live not far from there though I never visited it properly before starting this channel... if you check the other videos of the other towns there... they're incredible. By far one of my favourite region ever. Wish you a nice 2022 ahead
