    More than just a returning fan here. Your journeys into the past are a moving storybook, a living portrait of a time long ago. That you provide witness to these historic towns brings a few moments of peace and quiet to an otherwise hectic world. Let the others watch their Marvel superhero movies. I come to Still Wanderer and step back into an ancient past built of heart and stone.

      My question is, although it’s absolutely charming, how do most of these people get any sun in their homes ? & it seems like they have hardly any windows in the ones they have are always closed.

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed...some of those houses from medieval times didn't get much sun.. mostly people were always outside I guess )

  • @hugolafhugolaf
    @hugolafhugolaf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Seems like, in medieval times (or even before that), when Italians would see a barely accessible hill or ridge, they'd just go «you know what, we'll build a town there». Imagine the effort in carrying the stones from the quarry, the mortar, the grout, all with limited means. This is a great walk that really showcases the workmanship, and the priorities (or lackthereof) of past methods of construction (mismatched stones, stones AND brick, completely random street pattern, etc...). And those cats at 1:03:10, OMG!
    Why is everything closed/deserted though?

    • @kensellar
      @kensellar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a truly beautiful chaos of stones and brick!!

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Dear Hugo, and completely agree with you on this. Also, hardships, wars and struggle was the reason unfortunately, as back then times weren't as quiet as today for sure. Being all together and surrounded by a cliff surely helped! The medieval times were surely interesting ... and .... the cats )) So many of them in these towns, it's quite funny to watch them actually) It's becoming a "continoual plot" on the videos now as I see )
      Glad you enjoy the videos anyway... still a very small channel though... we're few but all with the same passion, and this is wonderful to know.
      A big ciao from Rome!

    • @sunnydaze2359
      @sunnydaze2359 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was my first question. Why was everything so deserted, could it have been because of the pandemic ? I don’t think so. But it makes you wonder if anybody even lives there.

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many younger people left too these towns....mostly pensioners and older people live there :/. I hope with this channel to make them known more actually. They deserve to be discovered

    Fascinating town which reminded me of out-door shots from a movie set against the back-drop of a historical drama. Or with the deserted streets and closed-up buildings it can be a gothic supernatural thriller with the lead characters exploring the maze of steps, streets, and different levels of the hills. With baited breath, I kept wondering what will you find next as you turned each corner....the sound of the wind also added to the atmosphere as well as the unexpected welcoming committee of the congregation of cats. One seemed to be escorting you along part of your walk and the others sat on the wall, looking on as if to greet the visitor or traveler to their town. I greatly enjoyed this video and this is truly a remarkable place for anyone to visit.

I try to see in Google Maps beforehand the best path but... it's always a quite unexpected route everytime as they are so narrow it's almost always impossible to plan beforehand everything. It's fun though planning a bit .. it's more fun to see unexpected paths!

    Hi, Ric. Yet another comment here! I would love to see you revisit Sorano in the next year or so as a primer for my visit there. I would also really love to see you walk down every single lane and pathway of the old town. You covered a great deal here, but I see pathways going left and lanes going right and I wonder what magic lies there! You are always so good at showing detail, and I for one would love to see even more. Every lane, every pathway, even those that lead to a dead end and you have to turn around and come back the way you came. That's the video I want to see!

    Riccardo, this fall the Walking Tours will face competition from the Championship games. I had just finished watching my team, PSG, when your video showed on my TH-cam. I'm glad I switched video. This is an awesome video about a medieval town, mostly on the hilltops and preserved so beautifully over the years. The "Fortress Orsini" just stole the show, it's massive and beautiful. Thanks for video.

As you can see from the other videos, I just LOVE all the southern Tuscany and (maybe even more so) the north of Lazio... absolutely one of my favourite areas for some reasons or another. Dear Lucy, very much happy to read such words and so glad to meet you. This small channel, born 2 years ago, had the original idea to show the "unusual" towns of Italy, and not only the "famous" ones... I hoped they could also be of interest as there's not only Capri, Sorrento, Venice or Rome! With time though I'm trying to also go to famous cities :) But the original idea still sticks in. So happy to see some people can like them too.

    I’m truly enjoying your walking tours. I watched your Pitigliano tour and now this.
    I noticed a couple things.
    1. I don’t really see many of any locals out and about while your out walking. Except those in their shops.
    2. With these towns being primarily walking towns it must be exceptionally difficult for the towns people mid age and older to traverse. I would imagine once in elderly stage it would be almost impossible for them to continue to live there.
    3. I didn’t see any food stalls or ‘grocery’ places. Obviously they aren’t able to keep livestock or much of a garden so they must have to get their food locally. In past centuries cars would not have been a option to drive to the nearest town.
    It seems like a magical place from another time but I could see where some problems might present themselves.

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ciao DM, very glad the videos are enjoyed. Started more than 3 years ago by now… quite a lot and back then there were probably me and another bigger channel (though not native from Italy) showing these towns. Nowadays…. channels are popping up every week.
      Good questions. I get often asked siniliar ones and in fact the situation is like this:: there are a lot of older people living in these tiny towns and often, slowly slowly, they are de-populating. I actually wanted to film these “unknown” towns just to preserve its reality. In 10/20 years I doubt they’ll stay like they are. When these older. peoplie will not be with us anymore, who will live here? That’s a question which often brings some bad vibbes….
      Usually grocery stores are located outisde of the “historical center”, and I don-t often film those other parts of the townn. But usually they are very near, away from the “touristic” part let-s say. More often than not, also relatives of these older people bring groceries.
      Of course one won’t see many children playing unfortunately…. and younger familes lives in bigger cities.
      Back then, it was the opposite… these little towns were full of life and. of people going around their daily life. My grandparents used to tell me this… and everyone agrees. Unfortunately, very unfortunately, times have changed. And it will beeven worse probably in the future

    Ric, you continue to be an invaluable resource! I wanted to find a restaurant that a Facebook user recommended, called Cantina L'Ottava Rima on Via del Borgo. The pictures are amazing as patrons look like they're inside a cave! Google maps gave a route from our hotel, but it's always nice to see it walked in real life, and after rewatching your walk, there it was! I just had to play your walk backward from Via G. Selvi down the narrow steps and downward from there. Thanks!

I want very much to stay here a couple of nights, and I don't feel the need to visit the two other nearby towns, as beautiful as they certainly are. But with only a couple days, we're staying put and exploring all of those narrow lanes and magnificent vistas of the town. It truly does look like Matera from a few of those vantage points! You and Prowalks have convinced me. Great walk! Never stop believing in the importance of what you do for people around the world.

    Hi, Ric, just me again! I have rewatched your walk dozens of times so far, and what hit me the last time I watched, was how smooth and gliding your walking was, even a step up from the always great work of Isaac. I clicked on the equipment you used, and it was the Osmo pocket 2 that I have. However, whenever I use mine, I always get that slight bobbing up and down as I walk kind of motion. Having had a career of videography, I would regret making my trip and coming home with that bobbing up and down everywhere I go. There are handheld gimbals that you hold like a gun, but I need to get it up above head level for a better view of my surroundings, especially in crowded places like Positano shopping streets. So many walkers hold their cameras at eye level or lower, depending on their height, and it gets a little tiresome looking at peoples' backs and the backs of their heads. So my question is how did you get this video so glidingly smooth? I don't see a gimbal listed in the links of equipment you used. I would appreciate any words from the master!!

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ken, glad you are in a way very conscious on that aspect as I am - one of the most irritating thing is the "wobbling" up-down movements I see in videos...I always tried to get the smoothest experience especially on that aspct as I hate that... with time I think I found the ideal setup as I use also a 4th axis stabilizer which, attached to a "selfie stick" is quite high in height and hence, the view is "above the head". It's rather bulky all the setup, you can imagine the stares) But since I always strive for the best smooth movements.. I do it like this. It broke down a few times and had to fix it myself but it's a nice setup. It's not on Amazon then I didn't add it there. I'll write to you by email and let you know. Try to find the video of "Trevignano Romano".... that walk was the SMOOTHEST I ever was able to achieve , especially because it was on flat land. I'm glad you appreciate this, as I never ever saw anyone commenting on this aspect while I'm quite picky on this aspect myself... glad somebody can notice it

    Hey Ric, I was just thinking (which is rare!), I would love to see a slow drone complete flyaround of the entire town. For other beautiful towns, too that you have visited, that would look amazing. I watched a drone flyaround of Civita di Bagnoregio once that took almost 10 minutes, and it was a thing of beauty. Would love to see you do several towns like that, starting with my Sorano!

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ken! Thank you for this. It's a good idea. I did some of these "drone-only" videos before, you can check them in the main page. But... Sorano wasn't included in there... I don't know if people liked them though... I'll hope to make a new one and I'll start from Sorano , deal :)

    • @kensellar
      @kensellar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StillWanderer Sorry, that was me having what we say here is a "brain fart"! I do love your drone videos. I'm not sure, though, if I've ever seen you do one continuous circular move around the entire perimeter of a town, really slow, as well as individual shots. I think some of those drone videos were what originally drew me to your channel. I remember the sun glint on the roof of that building that told me you really knew what you were doing on a grand scale, but also in the details that only a handful of viewers would notice. But yes, I would love to see a slow, loving completely circular move around Sorano. And even though I don't plan on visiting Sovano or Pitigliano, since they are in the same area, if you did those three as a drone 3 in 1, that would be beautiful. Anyway, keep up the excellent work. You helped me find my Sorano, and I don't think anything will replace it for me. Can't wait.

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ken I never actually thought about this before...a full 360° drone circular view is actually a neat idea... I'll try it. Oh ... That drone video in Nemi it was ... Where the light struck as the music flowed... Unfortunately I see that the drone videos only got si little views...:( I stopped making many of those for that reasons as I thought they are not particularly liked either by the subscribers and by TH-cam as well... But I'll make more from time to time Ken, as there are people who enjoy them.
