I have a 4TB HDD (and will be getting another for X-mas) on my Xbox One X now, but you don't need a Xbox branded one or you can make your own. You just need a decent HDD, 7200 RPM if at all possible, and an external USB 3.0 HDD case. Making your own may or may not be cheaper depending on where you buy them and what the market is like at the time.

Western Digital has never turned a return down an RMA ( Return Merchandise Authorization) for me.
I just have 4 AA rechargable battery and a wall charger and I hot swap them works best for me as I never need a wire ore to stop playing to charge the pad just take emty battery out stick em in the wall charger and put charged ones back in easy

DO NOT buy the play and charge kit. The cord is made cheaply and will not last. I am very careful with my things and it’s just not durable. I’ve ran through 3 within a year and a half. I recommend a 3rd parry charging dock.

I use a external usb 3.0 hdd enclosure from Orico with a 1TB Crucial MX500 SSD. Best by and cut the loading time in half.
