Secrets of the miner's lamp. Oil lamp restoration

- This lamp contains an interesting secret. It is quite difficult to disassemble for maintenance and refueling. I think that's why the seller sold this lamp very cheaply, he could not disassemble it.
The wick of this lamp is ignited by a lighter built into the body. But this lighter didn't work either.
Recovery process:
I unscrewed the bottom of the lamp using a thin awl. Then I dismantled the lighter into small parts and found a malfunction. After I cleaned and polished all brass parts and reassembled in reverse order.
The lamp body was quite oxidized and also needed a thorough cleaning. To do this, I used a soft brass nozzle on a drill.
Then I painted some parts, filled the fuel tank with lighter gasoline, installed new flint.
I enjoyed working with this old lamp, and I was also pleased with the result of my work.

That 's not an oil lamp. It's a safety item for detecting methane in underground coal mining. The tank is filled with napa and when methane seeps into the glass chamber where the flame is burning it causes a small explosion putting the flame out thus informing the miner methane gas is present and to take precautionary measures to get air circulation into the site.

Bit of information on the lamp for you, Max.
One of my lamp collector buddies reckons It's an Elektrometal miners lamp, made in Poland under licence from the German Wolf company. I have several Wolf lamps, and the lighting mechanism and fuel vessel are identical, so makes perfect sense.
Im not sure if the hole where you used an awl to release the lock should be there, usually a high powered magnet is used on the front of that bulge to pull the pawl back to allow you to unscrew the lamp...the hole is possibly someone else's attempt to open the lamp.
During use, the glass would have had a sealing gasket above and below it, usually made from asbestos or heat resistant fibre. If asbestos, probably explains why they are missing.

I read somewhere that these lamps are opened with a magnet, but something is clearly missing in my lamp for this, perhaps there was some kind of pin in this hole that transmitted the magnetic force to the ratchet mechanism.

We used similar .. the 'Wolf' Flame Safety Lamp back in the early 70's when I started work as a 'Learned Official' in the South African Gold Mining Industry.
Herewith some 'useless information' .. 😏. Any possible errors .. I'm going back 50-odd years.
Contrary to what some may think, it was not used for illumination but for testing for Methane, a flammable gas quite common underground.
The bottom fuel reservoir was kept in place by means of a 'Magnetic Lock' which could only be opened in the 'Lamp Room' on surface using a special tool.
Fuel used then was 'Colza Oil' and one of the pre-checks of the lamp before use, was for the sealing gaskets on top and below the special tempered glass .. and yes, they were made of asbestos.
The glass had also to have the 'certified government seal' on it and be installed the correct way up. We did not have it in our lamps, but the 1%, 2% lines on the glass indicated the percentage of flammable gas in the atmosphere when using a 'test flame'. We had to 'judge' the % gas by the estimated height of the flame.
During testing, outside air was drawn in via the lower ports, moved up through the flame and then out via the top body.
A 'test flame' was with the lamp flame set down very low and other lighting extinguished .. thus pitch black.
Any methane in the lamp glass body would burn with a very light blue flame .. the height thereof indicating the gas %. Beautiful, but deadly. The flame 'snuffing out' indicated an 'explosive mixture' in the atmosphere. The entry and exit ports of the lamp were protected by copper gauze .. the upper being two separate removable units. Any gas-initiated flame or internal explosion would be prevented from 'striking though' to outside the lamp by the gauzes conducting the heat away fast enough to below gas propagation temperature.
Rule of thumb .. In a normal atmosphere, Methane would burn from 2 - 5%, and explode from 5 - 15% with the most violent taking place at 9.4%. Anything over 15% would not burn as there would not be enough oxygen in the atmosphere for it to do so. Anyway, at +15%, anybody in the area would have other problems .. namely breathing.
Methane, whilst not 'toxic' per se, is extremely dangerous in that it is colourless, odourless and tasteless and thus not detectable by the senses. Persons involved in a full on gas explosion suffer from catastrophic external and internal injuries.
In my opinion, lighter fuel burns too hot and anyway, turning the flame up for illumination will quickly soot up the glass. Better use paraffin on a low flame for 'atmosphere' or even better, convert the lamp for use with electricity if better illumination is required.

Друг, контент топовый, но не надо пропускать этапы восстановления. Как чистил остальные элементы, как выправлял изогнутые. Народ такое любит. В идеале после реставрации не должно оставаться даже царапин, а если покажешь, как лампа работает в качестве газоанализатора - вообще цены не будет, и миллионы просмотров будут обеспечены, даже если видео будет по часу длительностью.

In the early 1980’s I was a lamp cabin attendant in an under ground mine and one of our duties was to maintain the “Davey” lamps or Deputy Lamps. Whilst what we used were not of this design we use to open ours with a powerful magnet. In this way the lamp could not be opened, in the way you did, underground and potentially expose a naked flame to any methane gas that was present.
Also there was a asbestos or other high temp gasket that went between the glass and the base as well as between the top of the glass and the bottoms of the mesh screens. Ours were pure brass and when polished looked amazing.
Ours also never poured black smoke or soot out of the top of them. Also ours had an external sticker bar to ignite the wick. I still have one.

To jest lampa wskaźnikowa, inaczej Davy'ego. Barwa i przede wszystkim wysokość płomienia odniesiona do widocznych na szkle linii, wskazywała na procent stężenia metanu w atmosferze kopalnianej.
Lampa ta mogła również służyć do oszacowania zawartości CO2. Mocne przygasanie płomienia wskazywało na 5% CO2 i około 17% O2. Do napełniania zbiornika paliwa stosowano czystą benzynę. Nafta jest nieodpowiednia.

May I make one small suggestion? When cleaning with de greaser wear gloves. If you handle again after cleaning you leave oils and grease from your skin on the part. Thank you for an excellent restoration. I have a British miners lamp which is quite similar to that one but is lit by connecting a battery to heat an igniting wire!

Это лампа ЛБВК, выпуска 1980-х годов. Используется как индикатор загазованности. Сейчас выпускается ЛБВК-м, с розжигом от пьезозажигамки.

Very cool lamp, I've never seen one like it. I kinda wish you didn't paint it tho. It looked great nice and polished. I think the rods were brass too, so maybe I would have brought back the color. I'm also curious to know what the numbers meant in the glass.
I'm sure someone who's grandfather works in the mines would love to have this.
The stems are made of steel. But you're right, they were coated with a thin layer that looked like brass. Perhaps the red color is not very suitable, maybe paint it in gold color?
As for the numbers on the case, I unfortunately have no information.

The flame is far too high due to using the wrong fuel and the lamp will get far too hot to handle. The correct fuel is called Colzaline but I think it is no longer available. A very good substitute is Colemans Stove Oil which will give the correct flame.

Не понял, почему в названии "масляная", может перевод кривой? Для освещения она совсем не годится, да и не использовалась. Только как газоанализатор. Вешалась за крепь, ближе к полу, потому что угарный газ тяжелее воздуха и скапливался внизу.

Interested where this lamp comes from, it obviously uses the Davy lamp principle, which did so much for safety in the mines.
You're right, this is a gas analyzer made according to the Davy principle.
