Ryanair CEO says airline passengers being 'scammed' by 'OTA pirates'

  • Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary has said "online travel agents (OTAs)" that "masquerade as price comparison websites" are "levying fees that don't exist".
    Talking to Sky's Kay Burley, Mr O'Leary discussed what he calls "OTA pirates", check-in procedures and whether airline passengers are overcharged with extras.

    He is absolutely correct.
    I started out (years ago) not appreciating the man, but he is excellent.
    Kay Burley remains unwilling to actually listen and engage her brain.

    I previously had some issues with OTAs. I can understand what the Ryanair CEO is talking about. Ever since my issues, I have booked directly with airlines. I think all the OTAs are gonna go out of business.

    Everyone misses the point - he can give us cheap prices if he can eliminate the need to hire people to do admin tasks at the airport (check in staff). The way to do that is to penalise people to push them to check in online. Simple

    I fail to understand people who don't book direct with Ryanair or any other Airline I flew with Ryanair 26 times not one problem ,I have made my own arrangements regarding accommodation and Travel insurance Travel agents overcharge on Travel Insurance and Exchange Rate Last time I used a travel agent was over 20 years ago When i did use them I found as a single person I ended up with inferior accommodation

    If someone wants to book with an OTA that's their choice in a free market but I agree that OTA should be passing the contact details etc to airline so they can contact customer/passenger directly when needed.

    Complained after getting scammed by one of these companies, said the original hotel was unavailable and then bumped up the fee for a different hotel with worse facilities - when I wrote a complaint on their website said they would take legal action against me unless I removed the report !

    Kate being tone deaf here. These OTA middlemen are scamming passengers, and then Ryanair is simply pointing out the friction these ppl cause. Low fares depend on lowering costs, it's not magic. The villain here is not the favorite punch bag that is Ryanair, but these travel "comparison " sites which skim fees by deception.

      He mentioned it with relation to flight cancellations - they're obliged to give a 100% refund in this case.
      He was not talking about flight changes/cancellations made by the passenger themselves.

    Dreadful host. Michael explaining the problem with OTA's and her response is printed boarding passes? What a joke. Also I'd like to point out I lost my phone while in Germany so had no boarding pass so the Ryanair staff happily printed it out no fee. Just explained and they were fine.

    Lost my credit completely even though I sent a letter from my surgeon over a month in advance of flight for emergency surgery .I must have emailed at least 6 times and numerous calls different answer each time all I wanted was credit to fly later they kept dodging the answer pushing me on to someone else .I gave up in the end that's what they wanted lost my full ticket price there was no need for that very bad PR

      Sadly Ryanair might be the only airline that goes to your destination at your local airport. Very little competition at East Midlands airport. Doncaster airport has shut down.

    Why do Ryan Air have smaller luggage measurers than the other airlines, I travelled to a Spanish island with Easy Jet with no issues with my small carry on, flying back with Ryan Air, it was deemed too big, by 1 inch! I was forced to pay £35 because it would need to be placed in the hold as it was too big to fit under the seat, no one took this from me and when boarded the plane it was placed easily and securely under the seat in front of me. I will never fly with Ryan Air again as I think they are the biggest scammers of all the airlines.

    And now, 3 days after this interview, Ryanair introduced a new policy in which they do not provide the passenger with the boarding pass to print or download in advance anymore, unless the passenger pays to secure a seat.
    The new policy states that if the passenger does not want to pay, he/she must go to the airport 2 hours earlier and queue to collect the boarding pass in person.
    This is inconsistent with his argument at 01:37 defending the £60 charge to print the boarding pass at the airport saying there's no excuse to show up without it and that the charge is to pay for the ticket desk and staff.

    A fee for not printing your boarding pass before arriving at the airport is questionable. Whether or not the passenger has arrived at the airport with boarding pass, the passenger must, nevertheless, check in at the counter before boarding an airplane. Printing the boarding pass at the counter is but a small airline counter inconvenience for Michael and Ryan Air. However Michael does provide positive input regarding the OTA’s. OTA’s often leave customers waiting online for excessive amounts of time when complaints about price gouging and incorrect bookings need to be addressed. In the past Michael could walk into his travel agent and get these types of problems settled rather reasonably and fairly quickly. At some point in our recent travel agent history anonymous OTA’s have popped up everywhere and set up additional roadblocks for customer interaction with their travel agent. 😂😂😂

    I was insulted by a Ryanair employee at Lisbon airport who called me 'stupid' after I complained that my flight wasn't shown on the departure boards, so passengers wouldn't know from which terminal to board the flight. The Ryanair employee was refusing to do anything about it. When I complained to Ryanair on returning home, the reply I got was my complaint had been passed to one of their airport managers. No apology or compensation whatsoever, and the employee who insulted me probably got to keep her job.

      9 time out of ten I find it’s actually airport ground staff in Ryanair uniforms or just airport ground staff which are the problem especially when it a hub airport for national airline.

    I was flying From Dublin to Paris for rugby World Cup, while walking to our Ryanair gate the end of the queue with about 10 people were told we were late and flight was leaving without any warning and the plane being boarded outside on front of us it was clear the flight was overbooked and I had payed €600 return for the flight. I quickly got my phone out and started to record the scam and the check in girl. She got me on a later flight at no extra cost in return I handed her my phone and she deleted the video herself on my fone. OLeary that’s the scam!
