My former job lasted 4 years during which time I developed a Europe-wide contract with a major company. We started in the U.K. plus 2 other countries, we ended up in 12 countries, signing a 5-year rolling contract in excess of €20m.
My job wouldn't have existed without Ryanair.

As an American who despises flying in the not-so-friendly, cattle car like skies of Ryan Air, I have only one thing to say to Michael O'Leary: He's right. No matter how many scratch cards they try to throw at me, no matter how bad the food is, I will fly his airline, b/c despite all the hassle of actually flying his airline, that price is a dominant driver in airfare is a simple statement of fact for budget consumers like myself. So, here's two cheers for Mr. O'Leary.

It doesn't make sense that ryanair makes it possible to fly to italy for £30 return while a train ticket to London costs £60.
If it doesn't have wings and a Gold Harp on the tail then I aint going.
Micheal 'O' leary you deserve a Nobel prize for changing the way people commute and offering greater freedom for the poor.

Michael O'Leary has his issues, but he has done what he said he'd do, which is to lower the cost of air travel, when you get a reasonable cost flight somewhere via ryanair, it can be awkward sometimes getting on and off, but its worth it for the fare.

@munkifisht And how many flights do Ryanair operate every year? I would say they've run far more flights than most in their relatively short life, and they've never had a maintainance related issue.
Their average fleet age is 3.6 years. BA's is approximately 12. Perhaps if your DAA friends would like a trip across the sea to check out some of BA's lovely 737s (19, average age 19.3 years), 747s (52, average age 17 years) or 767s (21, average age 18.7 years).

Ryanair fly no further than about 4 and a half hours. If you can stop yourself from drinking alcoholic beverages for that length of time then you'll find that Ryanair in fact have the best customer service of all airlines in Europe. Their customer service is based on what you need instead of what you want. People say "Oh it's ridiculous that Ryanair charge extra for bags" but no complaints when you pay a high fare, get delayed and are more likely to lose a bag in return for a free drink!!!

The smugness of the host in response to Mike Oleary presentation on airline deregulation is very telling. He said if not for the EU to deregulate, Ryan Air wouldn't have existed. In Brussels and all eurocrats minds, they do a favor to businesses. Business exists because of their governmental intervention. That doesn't explain why Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France cannot beat air fare offered by Ryan Air.

@pwwatson8888 That's your choice, though most people, in the end, don't fly for the comfort, they fly for getting from A to B. Either way, paying 10 times as much just to have a more comfortable seat and extra perks inside the flight is not worth it. And the majority won't pay for it on short to mid-distance flights.

I hate this BS and people whining over the hidden costs. All the cheap flight sites have a Total Cost at the end of an application, if you don't like it go somewhere else. I also think that people should realy respect and be proud of O'Leary, if he hadn't existed you would still be paying double or triple what you pay now for your flights. This man and the competition he has introduced to flight pricing is actually saving you hundreds a year. So quit moaning over the "hidden" €5/€10 charges.

@pwwatson8888 Point being? If you don't like them, don't use their service. Freedom of choice, power to the consumer, more options to everybody. It's not like O'Leary is trying to force you into flying with them. On the contrary, it's the "big-ticket" national airlines which are heavily subsidized that force every taxpayer in that country to "fly" with them (e.g. TAP here in Portugal, which receives hundreds of millions of euros every year in state subsidies).

@brianrallen Many airlines have an outstanding safety record, and most are far older than Ryanair. What you don't know is that many of Ryanairs engines were retrofitted with silencers as they were so old they contravened environmental regulations. Also there are serious questions about the quality of repairs carried out on Ryanair planes and the subcontractors are put under serious pressure to increase turn around times and declare planes safe to fly. @pwwatson8888 So how much has that cost you? Obviously you can afford to fly 45 times a year at £500 a flight. If you can afford more, and you want it, then great! That's why capitalism is so great! You get what you want! I want a cheap flight, even if that means cheap seats. I would rather spend £99 for an hour on a bus then £500 for an hour on a luxury bus...
