Great choices! When do we get "Hook", btw? Been waiting since HTTYD. Theres a bit of a basis for "Bugs Life"from "Seven Samurai", an amazing black and white movie, which is about a village hiring the titular samurai in exchange for food to defend their town from an army of bandits. "Seven Samurai"inspired so many other films, including "The Magnificent Seven"(Akira Kurosawa, the director, successfully sued the director of "Magnificent Seven" for stealing it)and more. "SS"is more drama and less comedy though!(definitely recommend!)

Hopper is easily one of the most under appreciated villains in animation. The dude brutally kills three of his own men just to prove a point, and is smart enough to understand how the ants could overpower the grasshoppers.
Something cool about the little green bug the Queen is carrying around, its called an aphid. And in real life ants will kind of farm aphids to "milk" them for their sweet nutrients, in return the aphids are protected by the ants from bigger bugs that eat aphids. So they have this symbiotic relationship.

Ants are extremely social animals, and rely on their antenna to sense out the pheromone trail left by other ants to know where to go. He's panicking because the leaf cut him off from the pheromone trail. That's also why he didn't want to go around the leaf, because it's brand new ground with no pheromones.

Denis Leary is Francis, the Ladybug, he also voiced Diego, the Sabertooth tiger, and he’s also Captain Stacey in the Amazing Spider-Man movies, and who would’ve known that years later, John Leguziamo would also be participating in a Disney Computer animated movie in 2021.
Another favorite from my childhood. I feel like it's very underrated now but it still holds up. Hope you also watch Antz (if you haven't already) which came out around the same time. 💕
Childhood movie! Kinda creepy in some parts, anyway the CGI is great for a late 90s movie, anyway I love how in some pixar movies they show like bloopers in the credits
Walt Disney himself made a Silly Symphony cartoon short featuring a grasshopper and ant. The only difference there is the grasshopper is too happy-go-lucky to realize he can't provide for himself and there are consequences when the harsh weather sets in.
Saw this in the theater with my parents and we cracked up laughing! It's inspired by Akira Kurosawa's 1954 epic Seven Samurai and it's 1960 remake The Magnificent Seven. They even had the same premise in Galaxy Quest, where is shows what would happen if the cast of Star Trek were mistaken for real space heroes and must fight off an intergalactic warlord.
It’s usually only the male ants that can fly. But in this they made it so that only the royal family has wings. A fair enough stray from the path for aesthetic I guess. 😄
They used to do bloopers at the end of the pixar films when they first started, I don't know why they stopped doing it. It gave their movies so much more depth and likability.
This whole film is based around something known as a parasitic relationship. You see, there are two types of relationships in the animal kingdom: Symbiosis and Parasitism. A parasitic relationship is one in which one organism, the parasite, lives off of another organism. Before you correct any mistake in this film it's an actual thing with Ants and Grasshoppers where they're supplied with food and apply protection. *It's quite fascinating*
Symbiosis refers to a close and long term biological interaction (relationship) between 2 different biological organisms. There are 3 kinds: commenalism, mutualism and parasitism. 1. Commenalism is where one organism benefits from another but the second organism isn't harmed or benefited in return. 2. Mutualistic symbiosis is where both organisms benefit from a relationship. 3. Parasitim is where one organism benefits but the second is harmed by the relationship.
Ostensibly, this is a Pixar retelling of the story of the Ants and the Grasshopper. The Grasshopper is essentially doing nothing to prepare for a harsh winter, the ants spend all year preparing. When winter comes, the ants are fine, the grasshopper starved to death. Not the best Pixar film, I think the theme is a little overly simplistic, and it relies on way too many cliches that were big during the 90s and early 00s, but it’s still visually impressive.
This movie is so underrated. Glad it's been making the rounds in the reaction community! So happy you enjoyed it. And the bloopers at the end are something that almost all the old Pixar movies have! Toy story has them too and they're so funny. I think one of my favorite scenes is when Hopper is making an example out of two of his men. When he's throwing pieces of grain at them and then just rips the cork out and buries them alive with zero expression on his face. It's such a good scene and really drives his point home. Honestly, watching it as adult, he reminds me of Negan from the walking dead. (obviously a more tame version of course hahaha) When I was a kid I had a big figure of Flik that doubled as a bedroom alarm. It had a motion sensor in it and if someone walked in front of it he would go "Stop! You have entered a restricted ant hill! Intruder alert, intruder alert!" I loved that thing. Still have it somewhere.
Back when this was released the fact that Pixar generated so many Ants onto one screen was revelationary seeing as the technology available at the time didn't allow anymore but Pixar found a way and generated magic in the making that still holds up to this day
By away, have you seen DreamWorks' Antz (1998) before? It's similar to Pixar's A Bug's Life (1998). It released on the same year along with A Bug's Life. It's not a rip-off movie. I like when movies has similarities. I love both of Antz and A Bug's Life. Just saying though.
One of my fave Disney Pixar films. It was my ultimate fave for years. Flick was my hero. Hopper is amazing villain- Kevin Spacey makes the role his own! I was 14 when I saw this at the cinema and I got to be honest I thought the grasshoppers coming through the mist was creepy and genius! Thanks for such a heartfelt reaction. 😁
The scale of this movie always fascinated me. The way the bugs use human trash is so creative! They built a section of California Adventure dedicated to this movie for a while (I think it was replaced by Cars Land, which to be fair, is equally well designed) and I always loved the design of it as a kid! The entrance was a huge cereal box lol.
While watching your reactions, you help me pick up on things that I wouldn't have viewing on my own. Like at 2:52 I had NO idea that the stock that was flying in the air actually hit Atta! Wow! It's actually watching people react to A Bug's Life that helped me pick up on "BYOB" which I never caught growing up. LOL I also love the moment when Flick and Atta were watching the real bird feed Hopper to its babies and Atta is too horrified to look so Flick shields her from having to watch. ❤️
You know that 'Circle of Life' line is not the only Lion King reference in this movie. In Bug City, there's a poster for the Lion King Musical(And on top of that, the city is resembling New York), and Hopper has a scar on his eye.Though scars were from different causes. Even Hopper's death is nearly the same as Scar's, being eaten alive.
Love that you enjoyed this, A Bug’s Life is a great movie! And I agree with some of the other comments that Hopper is definitely one of the most menacing villains out there. It’s too bad we never got a sequel.
I rewatched A Bug’s Life almost a couple years ago. Man, I will say that I enjoyed it more as an adult than as a kid. Quite honestly, I like how Flik, and Atta seem to have a lot more in common than they might realize, the characters are likable, and how this film teaches us to stand up for what’s right in the end, you know? I’m actually glad that there isn’t a sequel for this film. Anyway, great reaction yet again!
Bug life was such a staple in my childhood I'd watch it over and over til the tape gave out on me 😆 I remember my brother got a Hopper toy for his birthday and I basically played with it more than him. Also the blooper reel is so funny to me. Glad you reacted 💜
This movie always gets put towards the bottom of Pixar tier lists but honestly it’s still one of my favorites. Yeah sure it may not be their most ground breaking film, but Ive always found it very fun.

One of my fave animated movies! I think it’s definitely meant for an older crowd. So many of the jokes and why they were funny went over my head as a kid. Love it even more as an adult than as a child.
You know what I just realized, the trailer you see them pan to at 15:54 mark is the same trailer from Monsters INC. You remember the scene where the lady mistook Randall for a gator, right? SAME TRAILER! I was like "Wait, why does the trailer seem familiar?" and then it clicked when I remembered that Pixar loves doing Easter eggs referencing previous movies.
I'm glad you liked this one, it's such a classic now, and I love the bloopers, it's so funny to see Hopper act out of character when you only see him as just evil before and in the bloopers he becomes a totally different character like he's an actual actor grasshopper.
Hopper's eyes have different colors because he's one eyed (that's his name in the french version) maybe befzyse of the thing with the bird his brother mentionned. If you didn't get it, the Queen, the princes and the princesses are the only ants who have wings and not the workers ants. Also, in real life, the Queen is the mother of all the ants of the colony.
The reason why it looked sudden Flick so easily convincing the troup is that they saw the three flies approaching even after the chaos of the rolling tin can. So in panic said "sure we go along" and flew off as quickly as possible with him. Flick mistaking their enthusiasm and you too lol.
So I really wish disney would stop doing live action remakes and instead to updated animation releases. Not the excessive scrubbing on digital that muddied the animation, but an update to Pixar movies and fully animated ones where details can only improve because of updated technology. Imagine if this were released now, with smoother movements and graphics. Or the first toy story with toy story 4 graphics.
So underrated film. I don't know why this does not get enough credit. By the way if you have not seen Minuscule: Valley of the lost ants. It is great animation movie.
Some notable voice actors here from other animated films you've watched: Francis the ladybug is voiced by Denis Leary who's also Diego Ice Age. Slim the walking stick is voiced by David Hyde Pierce who's also Doppler in Treasure Planet Rosie the black widow spider is voiced by Bonnie Hunt who's also Sally in Cars
A Bug's Life is such an underrated classic -- but it makes sense considering it has to compete with the Toy Story franchise, Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, etc.
They didn't want Flik to find anyone for help because they wanted time to gather more food for the grasshoppers so he wouldn't screw it up. "You see, with Flik gone he can't..." "He can't mess anything up!" Also, have you never blown a dandelion before? And the reason the "warrior bugs" left do quickly is because the other flies rose up and were looking for them. Also, that one kid ant doing the play didn’t wanna do it. 😂
Love this movie though tbh I watched antz more :) curious if you've seen Ferngully? It's a beautiful movie imo with a stellar cast, was always a childhood favourite of mine :)
We watched this film back then with our 2 preschoolers. Their dad, now 50+ years old, still likes to say, "I'm going to change ... into a bea-uti-ful butterfly!"
I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's a shame Kevin Spacy is such a heinous villain in real life, because he plays such compelling villains in movies (these are probably connected). I remember the PS1 game of this movie being surprisingly fun.
It was this film in particular I first heard of Joe Ranft, who voiced Heimlich. His contributions to Pixar and non-Pixar titles were most notable. Other titles he did as storyboard artist were Roger Rabbit, Nightmare Before Christmas, and his last work Corpse Bride.

Since, 1998.
I love Pixar's A Bug's Life (1998).
Me too.
Childhood movie! Kinda creepy in some parts, anyway the CGI is great for a late 90s movie, anyway I love how in some pixar movies they show like bloopers in the credits
@@HunterSlayer2727 well I enjoy creepy stuffs so... I loved XD
They only did it 3 times from a bug’s life, toy story 2, and monsters inc.
The actor who plays the caterpillar is the guy who was tributed at the end of Cars.
By the way, what is Heimlich gender ? I never managed to find it even in the original version (I'm french)
@@a.g.demada5263 He's male
@@PikminandOatchi ok thank you
At roughly the same time, rival studio DreamWorks came out with Antz, which was so similar to A Bug's Life that a lawsuit did result from it.
Oh this film is Pixar's most underrated, still one of my favourites :)
That’s exactly what I have in my mind.
I didn't even think about the similarities to Galaxy Quest, but that's honestly fucking awesome! 😍😍😍
It’s usually only the male ants that can fly. But in this they made it so that only the royal family has wings. A fair enough stray from the path for aesthetic I guess. 😄
I just thought they were gnats. 😂
Queen ants also have wings, but they lose them after mating.
@@ARCtheCartoonMaster may explain why we never saw the old queen fly
Fun fact: Francis the ladybug is voiced by Denis Leary. The same man that played as Diego in the Ice Age films.
In Memory of
Roddy McDowall
(1928-1998)
This movie is the most underrated Pixar movie of all time.
Also you might like Rio in case you haven't seen it yet.
Oh, yeah! Rio is a MUST.
Wow, I didn't see the reference despite the fact I learnt this poesy at school (I'm french)
@@a.g.demada5263 sometimes we all don’t spot something obvious until someone points it out
@@nickmanzo8459 true but I think it's because there's no grasshopper in the poesy
(obviously a more tame version of course hahaha)
When I was a kid I had a big figure of Flik that doubled as a bedroom alarm. It had a motion sensor in it and if someone walked in front of it he would go "Stop! You have entered a restricted ant hill! Intruder alert, intruder alert!" I loved that thing. Still have it somewhere.
Wow, that sounds awesome! 😍😍😍💙💙💙
I love similarities, too! 😍😍😍
@@monsterhanna6691 Really? No kidding, right?
Oh my first Pixar movie! I watched it so many times when I was kid, that movie made my childhood. 🦋🐛🐜🐜🐞🦗
LOL
I also love the moment when Flick and Atta were watching the real bird feed Hopper to its babies and Atta is too horrified to look so Flick shields her from having to watch. ❤️
Pixar had a lot of foresight to cast Kevin Spacey as the villain.
One of my favorite pixar movies. The bloopers are so funny.
This movie is still a masterpiece till this day🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bug life was such a staple in my childhood I'd watch it over and over til the tape gave out on me 😆 I remember my brother got a Hopper toy for his birthday and I basically played with it more than him. Also the blooper reel is so funny to me. Glad you reacted 💜
The best movie of Pixar!
This movie always gets put towards the bottom of Pixar tier lists but honestly it’s still one of my favorites. Yeah sure it may not be their most ground breaking film, but Ive always found it very fun.
This is a classic!Pixar movies were so good back then they just have a different feel❤️

Yes, queens/princess ants have wings for travelling once they’re of age to start their own colony elsewhere.
There's a big debate on whether Antz or this movie were better. I like this one the best.
This was my favorite Pixar movie growing up! Happy you liked it 😊
One of my favorite Pixar movies! Me and my parents went to Disney World a few years back--maybe 2016--and visited Animal Kingdom for the first time, and Flik was the first character I saw, AND got a picture with him. It was awesome, and he's my favorite character. 😍😍😍💚💚💚
The humor in this movie is top notch!
I love how in the bloopers Hopper is just seriously trying his best to act, while being taken back by his fellow workers, especially Atta.
Sometimes I don’t like these movies but when Nick reacts to them I would watch no mater how boring or scary it is I will watch it because I love seeing nicks fantastic reactions and thank you Nick there is no one like you ♥️
15:53 that's the same trailer and pizza planet car that Randall got sent to close to the end of Monsters inc
One of my fave animated movies! I think it’s definitely meant for an older crowd. So many of the jokes and why they were funny went over my head as a kid. Love it even more as an adult than as a child.
The pu pu platter joke gets me every time 😆
You know what I just realized, the trailer you see them pan to at 15:54 mark is the same trailer from Monsters INC. You remember the scene where the lady mistook Randall for a gator, right? SAME TRAILER! I was like "Wait, why does the trailer seem familiar?" and then it clicked when I remembered that Pixar loves doing Easter eggs referencing previous movies.
Yes this movie is a lot of fun
I'm glad you liked this one, it's such a classic now, and I love the bloopers, it's so funny to see Hopper act out of character when you only see him as just evil before and in the bloopers he becomes a totally different character like he's an actual actor grasshopper.
Kevin Spacey is the voice of Hopper the Grasshopper Leader.
Rosie the Spider has the same voice actress as Sally from Cars, I heard it and instantly recognised her
Thanks so much for letting me know!
Me too.
The reason why it looked sudden Flick so easily convincing the troup is that they saw the three flies approaching even after the chaos of the rolling tin can. So in panic said "sure we go along" and flew off as quickly as possible with him. Flick mistaking their enthusiasm and you too lol.
One of my most quoted film ever....that gag real still gives me life..."Towel, we need a towel over here..."
Whoooooo! Always get a boost of Serotonin for the day.
I remember Hopper being a terrifying villain as a kid!😂
So I really wish disney would stop doing live action remakes and instead to updated animation releases. Not the excessive scrubbing on digital that muddied the animation, but an update to Pixar movies and fully animated ones where details can only improve because of updated technology. Imagine if this were released now, with smoother movements and graphics. Or the first toy story with toy story 4 graphics.
So underrated film. I don't know why this does not get enough credit. By the way if you have not seen Minuscule: Valley of the lost ants. It is great animation movie.
I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid.
You can only find a bug’s life on Disney +.
Hopper: "There are insects out there that would take advantage of you." Nick: "Like you." Me: EXACTLY!
You know this movie also is amazing that ants can actually life things 10 times their body weight.
That butterfly is actually a Moth 😁
14:15 fun fact: this takeout container ends up being another Pixar Easter egg from this movie on!
I like this movie Pixar a bug's Life that's great movie and the end bloopers
Some notable voice actors here from other animated films you've watched:
Francis the ladybug is voiced by Denis Leary who's also Diego Ice Age.
Slim the walking stick is voiced by David Hyde Pierce who's also Doppler in Treasure Planet
Rosie the black widow spider is voiced by Bonnie Hunt who's also Sally in Cars
A Bug's Life is such an underrated classic -- but it makes sense considering it has to compete with the Toy Story franchise, Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, etc.
The two bugs at the bug zapper are voiced by co-director Andrew Stanton and director John Lasseter, making cameos.
I'm still amused to this day with the caterpillar's German accent. 😂
They didn't want Flik to find anyone for help because they wanted time to gather more food for the grasshoppers so he wouldn't screw it up. "You see, with Flik gone he can't..." "He can't mess anything up!"
Also, have you never blown a dandelion before? And the reason the "warrior bugs" left do quickly is because the other flies rose up and were looking for them.
Also, that one kid ant doing the play didn’t wanna do it. 😂
Your reactions are the best! So wholesome 💖 A Bug’s Life is so underrated!
Awe this is my fiances favorite animated movie of all time ❤
Love this movie though tbh I watched antz more :) curious if you've seen Ferngully?
The scene with the Drawing The kid ants did with the caterpillar dying foreshadowed the death of the actor for the caterpillar
This movie is my childhood, one of the greatest movies to this day.
A Bug’s Life is one of those movies I’ve watched on repeat as a child
