    That *_is_* the way You get a soaked paperweight delivered off the hook of a tractor back into a working engine.
    It's an old Jaguar engine, so tolerances were a function of the weekday, the number of thrown rounds in the pub the other evening, the main builder's state of marriage and the half materials Jag had bought from the neighboring factory, each of which being themselves a function of the same array of random factors ..... so, getting it running was probably the same lottery it was the first time back in Coventry. I do not see why it shouldn't run after Your cleanup - might become an oil-drinker (I think it won't) or not have every single horse present meant to be there helping, but that's why You built Your speedster as light as possible, right .... ?😁 Thanks for sharing! Congrats for the career moves.

    Man congratulations! Technology is so amazing these days, I often worry that old knowledge will be forgotten with modern conveniences. You clearly started with everyday machines and thoroughly understand mechanics, I'm not certain this is entirely true for engineers who spend their life behind a keyboard. I hope this doesn't come across patronizing, but your time in Texas has certainly served you well. You have a confidence and self-bearing that we're not there 6 months ago or prior. It's quite blatant to a third party observer, everything from the way you speak to how you carry yourself it exudes confidence without being overbearing. Again no condescension intended, but I can't help but feel proud of you. I'm just a stranger, one who loves manual machining, but I think you have a very impressive future ahead of you. Please try to always get your hands dirty at least once a month or so. No doubt you have been exposed to the enmity between Machinists and engineers, it doesn't need to be this way. The rare times when you find a good match between engineer and Machinist, you quickly develop a shorthand, I think you will find an enormous amount of cooperative help if you make a point of working on the floor from time to time, demonstrating you're not above busting a few knuckles. I've met one or two engineers who are in this habit, those are the few shops I worked in where it was a really positive vibe and innovation was encouraged. It's amazing what we can achieve when we find techniques to set aside egos. I'm a little sad we are not likely to get many future videos, electric aircraft is a fascinating subject but I presume you are heavily hampered with ndas. You've brought me quite a bit of joy watching you create your machines, good luck and be well

    • @vatterger
      @vatterger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are you talking about with forgetting old knowledge? Knowledge evolves! Every new generation of engineers learns from their predecessors, either directly or by reading the textbooks and articles written by them. There is no lost knowledge at large, it's just that some knowledge is outdated or gets replaced by new approaches. I agree that a good engineer should also build stuff from scratch, especially to get a feel for the stuff they design, but it seems to me that you have a very pessimistic view on the current generation of engineers. I can assure you that this view of yours is pretty scewed, engineers are still learning the (updated) basics that generations before them have learned and most of them still love to build and fix stuff, at least if they really have that engineering mindset. There are tons of young engineers who do exactly what MacroMachines is doing, it's just that YOU don't interact with them and that these people generally are busy building stuff vs posting about it on social media, so you probably think they're a dying breed, but nothing has really changed between these generations: Engineering types still build shit in their garage.
      I'm an electrical engineer, just graduated from university, i've build countless devices from scratch over the years. See this CNC mill which i'm currently working on: cncwerk.de/forum/download/file.php?id=12368&mode=view
      I'm even desinging and building the servo-drivers: cncwerk.de/forum/download/file.php?id=12320&mode=view cncwerk.de/forum/download/file.php?id=13091&mode=view

  • @maxironpaw

    Nice to see you back and congratulations on your new job! Here are a couple of tips for the next time you take on an expedient engine overhaul. (1) There is nothing wrong with this approach nor any reason to expect that the motor will not last a long time. The compression will be a bit low and it might even smoke a bit, but that is acceptable for this type of work. (2) Your engine did not have a ridge but be careful as removing pistons without addressing the ridge will break piston rings. (3) Lubricate the honing stones. (4) Clean internal engine components with a wire wheel, not a sand blaster. (4) Lubricate the cylinder walls, pistons, and rings before installing pistons. (5) You can quickly make a ring compressor from thin sheet metal and a wide welding-clamp vise grip. (6) Always stagger ring gaps - was not sure if you did.

      Absolutely. With realistic expectations, sometimes "Good Enough" truly is good enough. We're not trying to win LeMans right out of the gate here--more proof of concept and shakedown runs than anything, if we understand correctly. This rebuild should be perfectly serviceable for the objective.

    That new engine being 30 thou over isnt the end of things, you could always re-sleeve the bores and go back to stock. Much cheaper option than a new block if this one decides to quit.

    Nice to see you back! Never had one of the 2.4 XK's. Done a few 3.4l and 3.8l and a 4.2. and they are all just such beautiful engines. Half the time they are old and sound like a sack of spanners at idle, yet they pull like anything up to 5500, and will quite happily cruise at 100mph for hours on end. For WW2 technology, probably the best car engine in the world.
    If you have time and the opportunity, run far, far away from the V12. Great from factory, after that, just tears.
    Yes, it'll run. Can you put an upgraded distributor on? Otherwise, get half a dozen condensers and a few sets of points. They will likely be new old stock, and some will be faulty out the box.

    Great work on the motor, the Jag XJ6 is a masterpiece of engineering. But what I find is unforgiveable is when people take great engines like this, that are running and OK, and then leave them in the weather with not so much as a sheet of tin over the top. Just so unnecessary and avoidable! Anyway you have done a great job of sorting out the neglect.
    One more thing: don't apologise too much for the 'short cuts' that some of the anal engine builders here in TH-cam might accuse you of. You are, like all of us, building to a budget and not creating something that is for a finnicky high-end customer. Just keep on using what you have, you'll be fine!

    It'll run just fine. It might use a bit of oil but you'd be surprised what you can get away with on those older engines. I've gotten away with worse than what you just did.
    Cold War Motors resurrected some old straight 8s that had been sitting for decades. One of them had water in multiple cylinders. They had to make an adapter and use a hydraulic pump to force one of the pistons up and down so they could get it out. Several of the cylinder walls were terrible and full of deep pitting. They honed it, dropped in a piston and fresh rings and fired it right up. It smoked slightly but it purred like a kitten.

  • @asciimation
    @asciimation 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cool to see you back! It'll run. I think people over think engine building. Especially when it's just a standard old engine, not used for racing or anything. I am no expert but have done a couple now. You just have to think what things have to be perfect so the engine will run and what things can be a bit crappy but it will still work. So worn ring/bores will maybe cause more oil consumption and maybe lost compression but the engine will still work. Similarly the slightly worn crank journals won't stop the thing working. If your oil pump doesn't work or a timing chain breaks then you're dead. Glad you replaced those! Must be nice working on engines where you can fit the piston to the rods and push the lot down from the top! On my Riley 9 the big ends won't fit down the bore so you have to push the rods through from the bottom then get the piston onto the rod then feed the lots back down. It's very fiddly! When you drive the car for the first time you be just as happy with it running on a crappy old engine than a perfectly rebuilt one. You can always do that later.

      I too have been inspired and purchased a 1960 MGA Coupe--chosen because my dad rally raced a 1956 MGA in 1957-1959. So far I'm only sourcing parts. Plan is to run a Ford Duratec 2.0 with Tremec 5 speed and semi-modern suspension.

    As for the engine- You might have issues with compression on some cylinders, if the rust managed to eat away enough material in places, but it should definitely run with a bit of help. How well it runs i cant say, but with six cylinders at least two or three of them should fire reliabily provided you got the timing set correctly.

    I know that you weren’t going for longevity, but don’t forget that engines can be resleeved back to original OEM bores. Any decent engine machine shop can do that, and any production machine shop can make new sleeves if an appropriate size can’t be found. The rest of that engine should be fine from what you’ve shown us here.

    The question is not will it run but will it run decent and for how long? You might end up with an engine that don't smoke if you're lucky or you may not, it's one of those things where we don't know what we don't know. From a few thousand miles away and looking it on the internet, the engine and cylinder walls look good enough to me. If you can make a couch do 25 miles per hour across a grassy field, I'm sure you'll have no problems with this, I have all the faith in you lad, you got this, good luck in your studies, I wish you all the success.

    Hi , many thanks missed your uploads, glad you are back. I would have felt happier with new bearing shells , a few tenths of a thou makes all the difference, but it is your engine and you have hands on as to the condition of the ones you have. Good luck can't wait for next upload, again many thanks for showing us your skills, do not do your self down you have done a super job with the car. From Nr Liverpool.

    I recently did the same thing with a 305 Chevy, it was in similar condition, I just took it apart cleaned everything and reassembled it with new gaskets and it’s running strong. I have no doubt that your engine will run just fine.

    Don’t forget that a Jaguar has cilinder 1 at flywheel side.
    For the timing of the camshafts there are little steel tools for sale with a notch that fits in the camshafts.

    I had a couple of cylinders that I couldn't get all the rust out of after sitting after a rebore. Hones them and there was still a shadow of the rust. couldn't catch a fingernail or really even feel it. That engine is still running smoke free after 10+ years.
