This is the most beautiful production of Hansel and Gretel that I have ever seen. I took my children to this twice in the 80s but the current productions are so disappointing. Those angels are unforgettable and the whole scene with the witch and gingerbread house is equally mesmerizing. What a shame there is nothing to match. I did buy the CD so my grandchildren could see this but I wish they could experience it live.
What a shame the Met saw fit to replace this wonderful production with it's current cynical, post-modern horror show, which is so at odds with the basic and honest sweetness of the score.
Sublime. I don't think it's ever been better staged, with image matching music so wonderfully, and the "pantomime" truly BEING one... the ascending angels at the end moved me to tears here, as I remember them doing when I saw this in the house. My one-time friend, Robert O'Hearn designed this marvelous production. Alas, 2016 took him from us, among so many others.
I played this video all the time doe my grandson when he was a baby, up to 5....now he's 12 and has no memory of it😂😮❤ but it's a fondest memory of his baby hood to me.
Dear God bless the children and let them all fall asleep safe in your arms always remember I’m a good child and always love me as a good Christian God. I’m a good Christian in your precious name amen.
In the most moving version of this that I've ever seen, instead of covering the children with a celestial "blanket", the angels (whose wings towered over their heads) formed a circle around the children and then leaned in until all of their wingtips touched forming a shelter above the children. Genius.
Don't think you're going to beat this production and performance (well, unless you have everything the same and sing in German) for this scene. I enjoy the use of flying angels as well.
SargentHoward AVIALABLE ON DVD DEUTCH GRAMAPHONE . MAY NOT BE SPELLED CORRECTLY, I WILL BE PURCHAS ING AS WELL. MY DAUGHTER'S FAVORITE PRODUCTION. SHE STILL LIVES IN OUR 👂 ❤ HEART. SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN 41 YRS ON OCT 14TH 3:14 PM. SHE DIED MARCH 22. 1:34 AM. ARNOLD BOURBON AMARAL
Aber man kennt ja die Handlung doch leider wird Hänsel und Gretel in New York an der Met nur eine moderne Inzienierung gezeigt! Die hier ist noch so richtig Kindgerecht gemacht!
It may be kitschy, but there is such a lot of time to fill, and to its credit the production uses the angels called for in the prayer (as opposed to the new Met version which does not).

... at odds with this essential core expression of the spirituality of the opera. The new version is an obscene, self-absorbed, consumerist, orgy.

Wow realty? The whole aesthetic is gorgeous.
I am weeping uncontrollably while watching this scene. This production is the best ever of Hansel und Gretel.

Nearly brings me to tears every time.

Where have you seen this? ,
Vielen vielen Dank für das Hochladen dieser schönen Version. Die altertümlichen Engel beruhigen mein Herz ❤️
Calista Flockheart looks like the leading Angel.
Heavenly sent! Thanks Humperdink !!
Help me lord to have the faith as a child. Lord have mercy on me. Absolutely splendid scene.
2:25 This is where Humperdinck gets his Wagner on... 😏
All my life I grew up with famous stories now I can

Tissues.

Do you know if a version of this performance exists on vinyl? I've been exhaustively trying to find one. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

It's such a shame that the director can't count. The text says 'vierzehn Engel' i.e.fourteen angels, not 16 as there are here.
There are 14 angels around the children! To be honest, it should be 28. For Hansel 14 and 14 for Gretel.
Well they don't really have "14 angels" in any of the lyrics in this production. So I mean it's not a huge deal. It's not the worst stage flaw ever.
Lovely singing, The production is pure kitsch.

You deserve the new Met production.
Hurray for kitsch! Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
Nonsense!
