Giles chasing Walsh played out exactly as he wanted it to. He wanted to scare her as payback for her belittling him earlier. It was petty, and it was hilarious. xD
One of my favorite episodes. The Giles & Ethan dynamic is glorious! Giles & Spike, also beautiful! One of my favorites lines from Spike as well, "And you're what? Shocked & disappointed? I'm evil!"
It's such a throwaway line but an important one. Because he's such a great character we forget he's a soulless vampire like all the others that Buffy kills, or an Angelus equivalent, rather than Angel. He's handsome and witty, but still evil.
I love how they overturned the villian monologue trope by having Giles actually hear Ethan and come back. What show does that? Also, my daughter is so used to those juxtaposition cuts where someone says a line and cuts to the next scene with something humorous or ironic, we were watching some other show and she was waiting for the line to be significant in the next scene and it absolutely wasn't. She was so disappointed. Buffy is quite unique.
Also, 3x14 is titled "Bad Girls", suggesting Maggie Walsh is a bad girl. Buffy's dorm room is 214; episode 2x14 is titled "Innocence", suggesting Buffy is the innocent one in this equation. Also 314 is 100 more than 214, suggesting the contents of 314 will one-up (or one-hundred-up) Buffy.
My favourite episode hands down. I would have loved more episodes like this. Giles needed more comedic screen time, as well as him and spike being a team.
- Willow should've at least told Riley about the party in advance because he comes in holding a weapon! lol - You're spot on as this being Giles' "Zeppo" episode. - Drunk Giles is always hilarious. - When Giles briefly chases Maggie Walsh never fails to crack me up!
Yeah, Ethan, if you remember, is pretty good at the dark magics. He is the reason Willow and Tara's spell goes awry... because he uses some pretty heavy dark magic to change Giles into a demon. At the end they show Ethan sitting in front of a circle, they forced him to end the spell. Once upon a time, he was friends with Giles, and I really think they were getting a long, but he is the master of chaos and couldn't help giving some trouble to his old mate. Probably a little bit of rilvarly on his end too since Giles became a good guy.
And I think he really did mean to just do this prank, assuming he'd have it fixed with no permanent harm done. And, being Ethan Rayne, he didn't think it all the way through - namely that demon giles would just kill him.
Dude I swear the only thing better than your unconditonal love for Dru, is your unconditional love for Snyder. If they ever decide to reboot Buffy, they 100% need to hire you as a consultant because WalshxSnyder is the nightmare-fuel romance I never knew I needed.
In the last scene with Ethan, you see he's seated cross-legged in front of a circle of smoldering ashes: we can assume he cast the undo spell just moments before. And yes, he probably did put something in the drink, not poison, just .... something else .... Ethan was played the wonderfully invested Robin Sachs, who passed away in 2013. You can catch him thoroughly enjoying himself again as Sarris in "Galaxy Quest". He was married for a time to another amazing talent, Sian Philips, who made a name for herself as the evil Livia, wife of Emperor Augustus in the 1970s mini-series, "I, Claudius" (I can't find a good clip of Phillips on YT, you're simply going to have to find time to watch this great bit of television for yourself....)
Love the team up. Love the title of the video. And one of my favorite parts of the episode is Giles claiming he's a man instead of a monster, only to jump out of the car and chase Walsh who he had issues with earlier in the episode to come back to Spike laughing (sadly not onscreen).
Random thought but I keep laughing when reactors watch things from the 80s / 90s that have money amounts. They’re always like “$200? That’s it?” But they forget to account for inflation 😂😂😂
this is a good one. i love giles and feel bad for him. im loving spike being part of the show as a main cast member. and i love the sweet moments and chemistry with tara and willow. tara is one of my favorite characters. also the part where giles chases professor walsh to get back at her was hilarious and so justified. you go demon giles, you scare that rude lady.
I did find it a little funny when you said that Riley, a member of the American military, should follow the orders of his girlfriend instead of his superior in the chain of command.
I wonder if the Scoobies ever once considered that lying to Buffy about something seriously deadly being in a specific room of the college where there would then be a whole surprise party… might be a bad idea? I was going to say something else, but I double checked where you are on Patreon and it would be a spoiler, so I’m going to save it for later! “Come on, Anya! Point them in the right direction!” “I think it ate him up.” I was dying laughing, let me tell you. XD
Here's why the Scooby Gang doesn't kill Spike: 1) The last time they saw Spike was during the Ring of Amara affair, which was fairly insignificant. He was just being a jackass, not out to end the world or anything. 2) Previous to that, he helped Buffy prevent the end of the world. Spike has pretty well established himself as a minor threat who isn't a high priority. 3) When Spike rejoins the Gang, he is defanged and has valuable information, which gives them no immediate reason to kill him and reason to keep him alive. 4) Once they get the information from him, he remains mostly harmless. Killing him would be reasonable, since he is just a soulless monster being kept in check by a microchip, but it would also be extremely cold-hearted. Spike is, at the end of the day, a charming guy. He's a punk asshole, but he's a funny punk asshole and very relatable. Just killing him when he's at your mercy and not actively threatening you would not be murder (because evil vampire) but it would *FEEL* like murder. You would have to go to a very dark place to just casually dispatch this harmless goofball on technical grounds. Buffy, who makes the decisions, doesn't have that darkness in her.
There is a big discussion about Spike's cigs. Angel says that vamps have no breath but then Spike smokes. Angel says he can't tastes food, but Spike eats food all the time. My personal interpretation is that Angel can't give the breath of life to a drowned Buffy because the air he uses is stale. Spike can smoke and the tobaccos hit is real, but any damage doesn't affect him because he doesn't need to breathe as humans do with pure oxygen air and any lung damage can be healed with supernatural fast healing (like Buffy). Drugs do work on Vamps, Spike sucked the blood of a hippie at Woodstock and he got high on acid spent the night in a rainbow stupor. Likewise, I think food can be enjoyed but a vamp doesn't crave food, at least not like how you and I would crave a sweet sugary donut. Angel is especially soft when it comes to enjoying fine stuff, even when he was evil he cried over opera. So everything works, but it is just a little different in certain aspects. Gunshots hurt for a second, but they don't cause death. Toxic gas fills the lungs, but it doesn't do anything. A hilariously vicious way to torture a vampire is to weld one into a steel box with holes and throw it into the sea; the vamp will experience full drowning effects without ever dying and will be extremely pruny.
Ethan is pulling pigtails. I think he misses Ripper and wants his friends back but he can’t be all good and Giles can’t go back to chaos, so that’s where they are.
Exactly, it was cut out of this reaction, but Maggie says, "agent Finn here alone has killed or captured-- how many is it?" And then he responds with what we saw. So yes, it's only him, not the initiative as a whole, nor the team he is in charge of.
Hmm, interesting take on Riley, but I’m afraid I disagree. Thor said he knows Buffy well enough to not even suggest she stay behind, I would argue that while he has been getting to know the regular side of her quite well, he doesn’t know much about her slayer side.
the initiative isnt corperate, its the military. these are soldiers. and yeah i dont trust them. also ethan drugged giles drink like he said. and then they show at the end him sitting next to a circle of thingswhere he undid the spell before they arrested him. and yes spike and giles have a great chemistry. spike has funny chemistry with many characters like giles and joyce.
The Initiative didn't just capture 17 hostile, that is just Riley's personal number. Also Schneider was eaten by the mayor and then blown up along with him. Pretty sure you would need his body to resurrect him, and it was not recovered from the explosion.
So Buffy and Riley are on a date... Willow and Tara are doing magic together (which has queer undertones) with a rose... And Giles and Ethan are at a bar drinking and laughing together with candles... is anyone else picking up what I'm putting down? 🤔🤔
Does Professor Walsh strike you as someone who tolerates anyone messing around in her wheelhouse? No way in hell, which is why she isn't thrilled about Buffy being the Slayer and Riley being involved with her.
I don't rewatch A New Man a lot, but Giles chasing Maggie in the street and Ethan's "oh bugger I thought you'd gone" are two of the moments that make me laugh the most. Also Thor is the reactor I've seen pick up on Tara and Willow's chemistry the earliest
Good Theory with Ethen‘s nature: he is like a mirror of Rupert Giles. One is order, one is chaos. Like Angel and Spike. 😄 Joss Whedon even makes jokes that they were a couple in the past, like an Ex-Boyfriend gone bad 😎
I don't think we really know whether vampires can die of drug overdose, or even lung cancer. They apparently have fewer internal bodily functions due to being "dead", but they can die. They can die from some things that would also kill a human (e.g. staking), and others that would not (e.g. drinking holy water). The fact that vampires can get drunk suggests they are not completely immune to conventional poisons, though it's likely the writers didn't think of it that way. There may be lots of things that can kill vampires that we never learn about because they aren't tactically useful for Buffy to use against them.
That's a really interesting thought, re: how come vampires aren't drug addicts bc they can use without negative consequences. I wonder if it's kind of like with food, they can eat but they don't get the same level of enjoyment that a living person does. In a sense, BLOOD is the drug that vampires are all addicted to, it's the one thing that gives them the happy brain chemicals. We know that they can feel the effects of drugs, though, Spike mentioned in School Hard that he was at Woodstock, fed off a flower person and spent hours watching his hand move. But yeah, Spike is a bit of an oddity among vampires. He smokes, he drinks alcoholic beverages, even if he doesn't get as much enjoyment out of it as he would if he were alive. Maybe it also has a certain aesthetic appeal to him, like wearing a black leather trench coat despite being unable to feel cold. The rest of the vampires seem to all just focus on the one thing they need.
You're obsession with Snyder amuses me continuously. I quite enjoy your theory and only time will tell. When you said this is Giles zeppo episode, that felt so appropriate! Except this one was about them proving to him he still matters and is wanted in the group, whereas I think Xander needed to prove to himself that he mattered separate from the group.
Giles IS the dad and dads do need our own time away from fathering the kids and teaching them about life. Giles needs to continue his life, he has not had time to marry or do any relationship building in his middle age, no drinking buddies (a must have in Britain), no one to shoot the shit with in his car, no romantic interest (that isn't extremely complicated revolving around a Slayer's mom). Giles also has the Watcher job where the bosses pretty much despise him and leave him out of all the going-ons in Britain. Meanwhile, Buffy is becoming a young adult (literally her Birthday) and Giles knows he needs to transform the relationship from adult mentor and child student to adult mentor to adult leader and show Buffy that she has the ability to stand on her own. However, in his heart, he also wants to still be in her life and allow her to lean on him. So it is a very difficult balance.
Only captured 17? Well, Spike was labeled hostile 17 - pretty sure they have captured more since they captured Spike. And based on the number of kills Riley alone claimed, pretty sure that the Initiative has killed more than they have captured, I don't think they label dead vamps and other dead demons the hostile X nomenclature. ;)
Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘A New Man’. May contain spoilers. So there’s 2 parts to this conversation that are important to talk about regarding withholding of information that are in juxtaposition to illustrate the differences in the character arcs between Buffy and Willow at this point in the show. Firstly, Willow’s withholding of information about her relationship with Tara from Buffy - of which she doesn’t know/hasn’t decided the nature of yet. Willow straight up lies to Buffy about where she had been the previous night. She tells her that she was in the chem lab trying out a new spell by herself when she was actually in Tara’s bedroom with Tara performing the new spell. So she’s not withholding information about her doing magic and what happened when she performed the new spell. She’s only withholding information about where she was doing it and who she was doing it with. She’s withholding Tara from the conversation entirely. If she believed the nature of her relationship with Tara was only just friendship at this point in time - why would she do this? Secondly, Buffy’s withholding of information about Riley being a Commando from Giles - of which Willow asks Buffy why she did this. Buffy just explains that it’s because Riley told her not to why she never told Giles about him being a secret agent military Commando. But then when Willow and Xander told Giles themselves and therefore it didn’t matter about Buffy keeping the secret anymore, she just says she forgot to mention it to him. Which is a very different reason for withholding information compared to Willow. The forgetfulness presumably because she was too caught up in Riley to care what Giles does and doesn’t know - but mainly the point about keeping a secret at the request of Riley. In other words - Buffy doesn’t want to overstep her boundaries. It’s a new and exciting relationship with Riley. One she hasn’t had yet. Normal. She doesn’t want anything to change the trajectory of it because she’s loving it and she has no real problem with showing it or sharing it with the Scooby Gang. Willow’s withholding of information of Tara and specifically where she is with Tara is purposeful. She wants to hide the relationship between them - not just Tara herself. Although she doesn’t know or hasn’t decided what the nature of that relationship with Tara is yet, she seems to already perceive it romantically and this is evident in the way she just completely lies to Buffy about where she was the previous night (the chem lab) and specifically says ‘by myself’ when she didn’t even need to mention the latter part at all. Buffy would have just assumed she was by herself anyway because she doesn’t do spells with anyone other than the rest of the Scooby Gang - of which Willow would have no problem sharing if that were the case. So there’s a lot to consider in just this discussion that really showcases where these characters are at this point in the show. Willow’s repression of her sexuality is now added on to her repression of her identity. It’s another piece to the puzzle of Willow. Her true nature has come forth and it is being revealed to the audience watching bit by bit. Both who she really is and what she’s so afraid of her friends finding out for the reason of the same insecurities as she’s always had - the fear of not being worthy - either as a friend, as a romantic partner or even just as a useful member to the Scoobies. The reason why she doesn’t introduce, or even share any details about, Tara to Buffy in this scene - and in other scenes further along in the season - is fear. To some watchers, that might be obvious. To others, it won’t be. It depends on who is watching. I picked it up almost immediately because I’ve had the same fears.
Does Spike have to worry about the consequences of smoking? He could get yellow teeth. A vampire with yellow teeth wouldn't be a good look, so maybe Spike should cut down on his smoking.
Its been a while since i last watched this episode but I think we still have a few episodes before the secret of 314 is revealed... i think they teased it for bit. Also seeing Ethan back again reminds me of the missed opportunity from many years ago when we heard about plans for a prequel series of Giles and Ethan in their younger days. Unfortunately it never happened.
"Love your enemy, did you read the Bible?" Dude, there are some pretty nasty "smite your enemy" passages in the Old Testament... There are over 100 verses with the word "smite" in them...and other verses where there are various things done to the enemies of "God's chosen people"...
Riley's kinda doing at you did with Riley in this reaction , just assuming the way the other person is without making sure. He thinks, just like him, Buffy would agree that doing what the military says is the smart option.

Here we go. Spike’s relationship with the Scoobies and Giles is hysterical. Riley is so…Riley. I love Giles. I feel bad for him and I get it. I’m at the age where I feel irrelevant and it’s difficult to get past. Giles is the best, period. Walsh is a hardass. Leaving Giles out of the loop is so wrong.😒 The whole demon thing and Ethan taking advantage of ole Ripper. 🤨. Buffy doesn’t know how to restrict her preternatural strength properly and it’s hilarious.
You're not crazy, Thor. Because LGBT topics weren't very accepted for TV at the time, they used witchcraft as an allegory for a physical relationship. Technically, Willow and Terra's first kiss would have been the night they were about to die from those silent heart-stealers-- a completely normal TV trope. As the show it written, it can become a confusing situation later on if you're unaware of the allegory.
@@daphneglasurus7886 Are you a mod? I fail to see how saying something is an allegory after he says he's noticing chemistry is a spoiler. A mod would be more familiar with what things he personally views as spoilers. I've just seen too many reactors confused by the characters' behavior, because they were unaware of the allegory-- to the point where they couldn't enjoy the episodes it influenced. I thought he would have more elaborate commentary if he wasn't constantly second guessing if they liked each other or not. It's not like I said how long the relationship lasts or whether it becomes a more serious or casual experience-- or just a stepping stone onto a new path.
Giles chasing Walsh played out exactly as he wanted it to. He wanted to scare her as payback for her belittling him earlier. It was petty, and it was hilarious. xD
"Seventeen. Eleven vampires, six demons."
That's a moderately busy week for Buffy.
You cut out one of the best lines Riley is ever given: “Suddenly I find myself needing to know the plural of apocalypse.”
Your comment "Come on, Buffy, don't go corporate. Stay independent" cracked me up. (Also... cosigned. Lol!)
Slay independent!
The Wacky Adventures of Spike and Demon Giles should have been a Saturday morning cartoon...

The room number gives it away. 314 is the room where she keeps the Pie!

Still not over Snyder, eh? 🤣 Initiative Snyder would be terrifying.
I completely agree with you on Snyder being raised from the dead to take over Sunnydale.
So much fun thanks!
In the commentary, Jane Espenson says that Giles and Ethan once had a thing.
I’m disgusted by that…
Giles deserves a way hotter guy, he’s a 10 and Ethan is a 1
There's definitely a Dumbledore/Grindelwald vibe about them.
aka the "I Broke My Boyfriend" episode.
"Love your enemy, did you read the Bible?" Dude, there are some pretty nasty "smite your enemy" passages in the Old Testament... There are over 100 verses with the word "smite" in them...and other verses where there are various things done to the enemies of "God's chosen people"...
You think Spike actually pays for his smokes? 😉
Fun fact - it's been heavily hinted that Giles and Ethan have had a bisexual warlock thing in their youth. I think it's canon, actually.
Angel and Spike, too.
@@RB-vo4gi Oh, yeah!
@@RB-vo4gi well we know Angel and Spike requested a Devil’s threesome with the girls but they never said yes 😂

professor Walsh is out of Snider liege. but That would be an amazing ending. Kind of wish that is what happened.
“I’m sensing some chemistry.”
Yeah, you could cut the sexual tension between them with a knife.
i am quite relieved that you're not a _buffy_ writer lol.
314! 314! (just like my tattoo)
Giles looks cool to me.
Riley's kinda doing at you did with Riley in this reaction , just assuming the way the other person is without making sure. He thinks, just like him, Buffy would agree that doing what the military says is the smart option.
05:53 - 06:03 Fun fact...the main italian voice actor for Spike(from S4 to S7)is the same we have for Jack Sparrow so..the parallel is more accurate than you think(except for the fact I actually *like* Jack Sparrow)!😉
06:57 - 07:01 This week?
11:56 OH,GOSH,THAT'S THE ROSE SCENE???😍🌹The only scene worth rewatching this episode for!!!!😊💞

Riley being emasculated throughout the whole season is entertaining to watch.😂😂
You're not crazy, Thor. Because LGBT topics weren't very accepted for TV at the time, they used witchcraft as an allegory for a physical relationship. Technically, Willow and Terra's first kiss would have been the night they were about to die from those silent heart-stealers-- a completely normal TV trope. As the show it written, it can become a confusing situation later on if you're unaware of the allegory.
I don't know if it would have been that soon. It would have been more gradual for Willow.
@@knowledge-girl What makes you say this?
SPOILERS! Delete!
