Real-Life Garden Clean-Up, "Fall Stuffed in A Jar" Bouquet & Combatting The Comparison Conundrum!

  • Hi Garden Gals and Guys, in today's video, I show you a very "real-life" version of trying to get some of the cut flower beds cleaned up after some strong wind knocked several dahlia and zinnia branches over. Make no mistake, you will also see a TON of weeds in my regular landscape beds that my husband and son graciously cleaned up for me without me asking, so I made sure to capture that on camera as well! We all have eye sores in our garden - all of us!
    On that note, I started to talk about how I'd been fighting comparison lately. So much so, I turned the camera off and just assembled my bouquet off camera to have some "me' time and re-set. The "Fall Stuffed In A Jar" Bouquet breaks some "Design 101" principles, but I love it. The scale is off, but the magical nature of how the vase seemingly disappears is worth it to me. It also gave me time to feel the joy that working and growing flowers gives me, which is so important to authentically feel in a day and age where we're surrounded by media that we may compare ourselves to.
    I end with encouraging you and reminding myself not to get caught up in the comparison conundrum. I hope sharing honestly that it creeps into my life sometimes will let you know that you're not alone, but also that we can re-set and feel grateful for where we are in the moment with our gardens.

      Thank you, Valerie! I’ll admit I only work part-time - I don’t have any idea how people working full-time are on TH-cam. Kuddos to them - it’s a lot of work! But yes, thank you, because some days it’s still a lot. 😂 I appreciate you!

    I love your garden! I'm in Zone 8 and most of my yard is shade, except for one small area up by the road that will get full sun all day. I planted cold hardy seeds for the first time and the seeds have germinated! I just got a shipment of Tulips, Freesia, Scilla, and Peonys. I look around and get discouraged because of the lack of color. Next Spring is going to be pretty! I planted Larkspur, Love in a mist, and Orlaya seeds that have germinated. I'm so excited for Spring! Thanks for the encouragement 💕💕

      Hello Marianne! A lot of my front garden is in the shade as well…this year I’ve found different colored heuchera is really helpful in adding more color. I understand your frustration though. Shade can be tough. Betting those bulbs are going to add a lot of life to your garden! Congrats on the successful seed starting! 👏😀

    I'm glad to see a video. I was concerned because you hadn't been there. Yes, I enjoy your videos. Gardening is SO good for our minds and bodies. Currently, I am still cutting dahlias, zinnias, celosia, ageratum, cosmos, sunflowers, etc. The sunflowers (some are Sunflower Steve) planted on 7/31 are blooming so well now on this rainy and cloudy day. This week, I planted a few more perennials and just picked up a couple more Little Lime hydrangeas to add. A week ago, I harvested blooms from my Limelight Prime and Little Lime hydrangeas that were rosy, green and dry enough to put inside to enjoy this fall. I am starting to work on my zinnia seed heads, saved a month ago, to package the seeds for next year. The Flower Hat bulb sale is Monday so I am reviewing my order. We just had an arborist at our home yesterday and will be having 2 trees removed soon and I will be using the wood chips to top my garden pathways. Most of my fall bulbs have been delivered so I will begin planting those later this month. Finally, YES---Comparison is the thief of joy! Enjoy your weekend!

      Oh thanks, Sue, I injured my neck last week, so I’ve been laid out quite a bit unfortunately. On top of a harrowing week in the world, I just hadn’t had the energy or wherewithal to edit. I DO want to get my hands on Sunflower Steve’s sunflowers! They’re so insanely unique and beautiful! And I’m glad to hear that you planted them fairly late and still got blooms! What a fantastic idea to use wood chips in pathways…I’d never thought of that! Definitely going to try and do that around my raised beds! Yes, The Flower Hat is on my agenda for Monday! Colorblends bulbs came yesterday. Looking big and healthy as always. Once this neck/upper back gets to feeling better, I’ve gotta get on the bulb planting train too! Glad to hear you’re still harvesting and arranging, Sue! I think a frost may come any day now for us! 🥶

      Thank you! 😀 I do love my garden. Scarlet could be a way to describe it - maybe a little less orange than scarlet. It’s so unique and difficult to describe without seeing it in person…so add it to your list! 😂 But seriously.

    Lovely flowers, and bouquet. I tried some dahlias for the first time last year, and it was great. Some of the tubers survived, and I potted them into a large grow bag, and the plants were super healthy. I got 0 flowers, however, because earwigs ate each and every bloom right as the buds start opening! I was so frustrated. :( I have never had earwigs before in my garden, and this year it was like someone had bombed them into my backyard. Hostas riddled with holes, holes in peppers, and ofc, no dahlias. I was rather busy this year and didn't manage to use Sluggo consistently, so I did not invest in any more dahlias for now. Gonna save the tubers for what I have, hopefully some survive, and next year I'm gonna get packs and packs of Sluggo to fight the damn earwigs. 😠
    Imo your flower garden is very productive and beautiful, I fully believe it will become better and better through the years. :) I also have to say that your sunny and honest nature is one of the best things about you, and the natural way you goi about with your family is amazing - I giggled a lot at the shenanigans going on behind you when you were filming and explaining about the fallen flowers, and when the lil kiddo tried to high-five you using the shovel... thank you for the joy. ☺

      Oh, thank you so much 🥰 I appreciate your sweet words…when I was editing I wondered if anyone was going to notice my son in the background gallivanting around! 😂 I’m glad it gave joy as well ☺️
      I’m so sorry to hear about your earwig issue…knock on wood - I’ve never had them in my garden. Hoping next year goes MUCH better for you. I can only imagine no dahlia blooms is very defeating! Hang in there!
      Thanks again for your kind words!

    So happy to have so many dahlia blooms at this time of the season! I am in NW suburbs of Chicago. My question to you is about earwigs(!!!) . Do you use anything to deter them? There were soooo… many hiding out my blooms. Grrrr. Love to bring them in the house or give away but don’t want those in the house! How do you deal with them?

    • @TinysGarden
      @TinysGarden  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Diane! You must be just around the corner from me! I’ll be honest, I’ve never encountered earwigs in all 3 years I’ve done cut flowers. Or at least I haven’t seen any - maybe some were there, but not to my knowledge. I’m so sorry I don’t have better advice for you! I do like Captain Jack’s Deadbug Spray (it’s organic), but I try not to spray unless I have to and I didn’t need to at all this year. Hoping next year is not as bad for you!

      @@TinysGarden Really?! I lived in BG and now Huntley so , yes, very near you. Truly I have cut some dahlias and literally 10 - 15 earwigs have come crawling out! Yuck. Consider yourself lucky!
