Bolt yes but he beat Blake time and time again at 100...never looked at Blake to be better than Gay at 100. Now the 200....Gay was good at it and held it before bolt and Blake. Bolt just got better and Blake as gay declined with injuries.
Couldn't a agree more! BUT what a cruel twist of fate, that being on the brink of being The all time great, he happened to be born within the same era of Bolt. He ran 9.71! 9.71, a new American record, faster than he ever ran before, and he got beat by, TWO, metres... "
So often forgotten about in this generation. It’s a shame he stood in Bolt’s shadow. But he was still able to do things Bolt never did with his 400m records and such.
Tyson was the Michael Johnson of the 100m. He had the best running style. It was a flawless, ultra stiff upright style that enabled him to reach incredible speeds. But Blake is #2 after Bolt.
I'll have to disagree I think Tyson is #2 in the 100m. Blake in the 200m. But Tyson is the better overall sprinter because his 400 is superior to Blake's.
Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, Justin Gatlin, and Yohan Blake were renowned 100m sprinters in their own right, but Bolt's extraordinary dominance made them appear ordinary in comparison. Yohan Blake, with his recurring injury problems, proved to be the most disappointing among them. He was the only athlete who had the potential to challenge Bolt's record.
Yohan did beat Bolt in the 100m at the Jamaican National Trials in 2012 so he in fact made Bolt look more ordinary. Of course Bolt redeemed himself and broke his own Olympic record but Blake did actually get him at one point and also had the fastest 200m in the world as well when he ran 19.26 which is still the Diamond League record to this day (I think he also has the Diamond League record in the 100m as well).

I think this channel talked about 6'3 being exceptionally tall for a sprinter (Ryan Bailey 6'4, Bolt 6'5, and now Fred Kerley at 6'4) and 5'9 and below as being short (Maurice Greene at 5'9, Andre Cason 5'6, and now Christian Coleman at 5'9).

Positive test in 2013 when he was running super well, and then just trying to stay healthy & consistent during his comeback years (2014-16). Definitely deserved more global medals, shame he doesn't have an Olympic medal.
Just like how everytime they spoke about Flo-Jo but if I say Evelyn Ashford nobody probably don't know who that person is. She was the world record holder before Flo -Jo bettered it.
Powell and Gay are probably the saddest fastest sprinters if that make sense. Powell never got an individual title, and Gay never got an Olympic medal.
You're asking who the 2nd "best" 100m sprinter is. If you're talking strictly about who had the 2nd fastest compilation of times, then yes, it's probably Gay, Blake, or Powell, but that's a bit unfair to sprinters of earlier eras, as obviously, sprinters get faster with time. If you're talking about who was simply the all around 2nd best 100m sprinter of all time, I've got to say Carl Lewis. He has two Olympic Golds in the event, 3 World Championships (and this was back when they were only held every 4 years, so he was world champ from 1983 to 1991), he's a former 3 time world record holder in the event, the first man to run in the 9.8s, and he anchored NUMEROUS Olympic Champion and World Champion 4x100 relay teams, as well as world record holding teams. It's kind of hard to argue with those stats. Yes, his times weren't as fast as Gay, Blake, or Powell, but as I said, he's from an earlier era, so that's a bit of an unfair criteria to judge by. The fact is, no 100m sprinter in history other than Bolt can even come close to matching Carl's achievements in the event. Very good video, though. Thank you.🙂
@@Lighteningspirit My friend, you're fooling yourself if you think any of these guys are completely clean. You have absolutely no idea how easy it is to pass drug tests. Between undetectable ("designer") steroids, compounds that are bio-identical and indistinguishable from naturally produced hormones, compounds for which tests haven't been developed yet, or compounds that get out of your system so quickly that they won't show up on a test, it's extremely easy to cheat. Lance Armstrong passed over 200 drug tests while doping the entire time. Only morons get caught.
What I think is factual. Both Tyson Gay and Yohan Blake are the 2nd fastest men alive. Not Tyson gay only. There is a tie between the 2. N that will remain until someone else runs 9.68 or below
For all that talent & years of dedication, the guy ran sub 10s 36x in his life. (Of course there’s loads of training, but they rarely run the full 100M in training, especially at top speed, like in a race). Anyway, kind of interesting to realize that the relevant moments over his entire career took less than 6 minutes.
Agree Gay was probably the 2nd greatest of that great generation but this video doesn't consider anybody outside that last era though. Most improvement in sprinting since the 80s really has been about training methods, nutrition, track surfaces and equipment rather than genuine speed increases of the species. So I don't think you can discount similarly elite guys from the past just because their PB might be one tenth of a second slower - they had the same if not more pure speed. Gay's outstanding times and improvement was overshadowed by the superfreak Bolt, but I wouldn't say he is the 2nd greatest 100m sprinter ever. Carl Lewis won multiple global finals including back-to-back Olympics and held WRs as well as winning 200m and long jump, and Maurice Greene was also unreal in his prime. If Greene didn't pull his hamstring 15m from the line at the Edmonton world champs in 2001 his splits suggest he may well have run 9.7s flat or even sub 9.7s. Back then that was simply unthinkable.
Fair assessment. The stats support Blake and Gay. Gay made one fatal mistake, after losing to Bolt when Bolt set the world record, be set about training to beat THAT record. He was successful in that, but he didn't bank on Bolt upping his game and going even faster..
This is how I see it. When it comes to the discussion of who the better sprinter is, there are two factors: 1) Who's dropped faster times? 2) Who's accomplished more in the sport? Blake has an Olympic Gold ( 4x100m) & 2 Silvers (100m & 200m). He also has 2 Golds in the World Championships. Also, it's widely accepted that his 9.69 is more impressive than Tyson's because of the wind. Tyson has 3 World Championship Golds (2007) & 2 Silvers (2009). However, he's got no olympic medals and his 9.69 is considered the less impressive of the two. Its an interesting comparison for these two. Both have the same PB and both suffered career-altering injuries. I think Tyson has had more sub 10s throughout his career and his avg time is faster - he is the more consister performer. However, Blake has more accolades and a better PB. On top of that, he's dropped the 2nd fastest time ever in the 200m as well which only strengthens his claim as the 2nd best. Tyson is my favourite sprinter of all time - he's who inspired me to study sprints in 2007. I've always routed for him. But unfortunately, I'm of the belief that once you've used PEDs, you've removed yourself from the discussion. Gotta give Yohan Blake his flowers on this one. Hats off to him 👏
@@Pumpxkin Shit, completely forgot about his 2009 ban lmao. Thanks for reminding me! Hmmm.. I think if we were to put aside the bans: 1) Tyson would be the faster runner due to his consistent times 2) Blake would be the more accomplished runner. @@borntosyn498 I think Blake and Gay AND Powell didn't reach their full potential. I wanna be honest, they probably had low 9.6s in their systems. Tyson Gay ran a 9.80 in 2012 olympic final after a huge surgery that ended his season in 2011. Such a shame both got banned at some point. 2013 was about to be the biggest trio of all Bolt Blake Gay. It's tragic really. Literally the best 100m sprinters we've seen were competing around Bolt's ear. We had Walter Dix, Yohan Blake, Asafa Powell, and Tyson Gay. Put them in their prime in 2024, they would be dominating the sport.
underrated? no, he won when he could win in 2007, then he had injuries anyway he couldn't win against Bolt, then he become the second fastest man , then he tested positive and he disappered. Anyway he is the third fastest man all time because Blake has a better time on 200m.
Great video, I definitely believe Tyson is one of the greatest sprinters of all time. But I would rank someone like Carl Lewis as the second greatest sprinter just due to medals. Tyson is still the joint second fastest though
I am taking Powell for 2nd and Gay 3rd. Even tho I know Gay was faster, Powell's consistency does it for me. Only counting 100m tho. If we add in 200m then I gotta go with Gay
If not for Bolt and Blake, Tyson Gay would be the 100m and 200m world record holder and the faster man ever! He definitely deserves to be considered the 2nd fastest in history.
Lol no, the 2nd greatest 100m sprinter is carl lewis followed by Maurice greene. Heck I would put Gatlin above Tyson because he won a lot more medals. Aside from 2007 and 2009, what major achievements did Tyson really win?
OMG, Tyson Gay should’ve been the long standing World Record Holder. Had he avoided those random setbacks, he would have put down some even better times and received more medals. At one point in time, he seemed invincible…likewise for DeGrasse, as well.
Does the numerous bans for PED's that pretain to Tyson Gay and other American sprinters have any bearing on a sprinters career average? It seems to me the Jamaican sprinters have had far fewer doping violations that the American sprinter community has had sprinters banned. America's top two "fastest" sprinters by time in the 100m both have had serious violations more than one each. I believe the Jamaicans are far less tolerant of the same violations, well I mean they never get that far in Jamaica and I applaud the Jamaicans for their integrity. I am an American

Just like how everytime they spoke about Flo-Jo but if I say Evelyn Ashford nobody probably don't know who that person is. She was the world record holder before Flo -Jo bettered it.
I was born in 94 and I know who Evelyn Ashford was. Her turnover was something else, up there with Frayser Pryce.
Love this!
That entire generation of sprinters was stacked
Bolt is and wil forever be the Goat but Tyson is my favourite
I start this year am strong lean and tall 6 ft 11 inches will demolish Bolt within 2 years watch this space am also a good story teller lol
Powell and Gay are probably the saddest fastest sprinters if that make sense. Powell never got an individual title, and Gay never got an Olympic medal.
Imo it’s gay Blake Powell gatlin… the big 4 could’ve set up a meet where they complain about their issues while bolt is flexing on em.
@@Pumpxkin unlike them Gatlin won lots of medals and has an Olympic 100m gold and multiple WC 100m gold.
And Powell definitely should’ve had medals from 2004/2008. No excuse.
My GOAT
Thank you.🙂
Not clean though
@@Lighteningspirit My friend, you're fooling yourself if you think any of these guys are completely clean. You have absolutely no idea how easy it is to pass drug tests. Between undetectable ("designer") steroids, compounds that are bio-identical and indistinguishable from naturally produced hormones, compounds for which tests haven't been developed yet, or compounds that get out of your system so quickly that they won't show up on a test, it's extremely easy to cheat. Lance Armstrong passed over 200 drug tests while doping the entire time. Only morons get caught.
For me:
1. Bolt
2. Lewis
3. Greene
What I think is factual. Both Tyson Gay and Yohan Blake are the 2nd fastest men alive. Not Tyson gay only. There is a tie between the 2. N that will remain until someone else runs 9.68 or below
No doubt Tyson has a strong case but I think Yohan edge him given the fact that he also as the second fastest 200m also.
Tyson is underrated because like Gatlin he’s got the synthetic Testosterone shame hanging over his head since 2013.
This is how I see it. When it comes to the discussion of who the better sprinter is, there are two factors:
1) Who's dropped faster times?
Hats off to him 👏
But Blake also got banned too
@@Pumpxkin Shit, completely forgot about his 2009 ban lmao. Thanks for reminding me!
Hmmm.. I think if we were to put aside the bans:
1) Tyson would be the faster runner due to his consistent times
2) Blake would be the more accomplished runner.
Not sure how to decide which of those two contributed more to the sport and event so I'll let you decide lol. Who you got?
@@borntosyn498 Both are phenomenal sprinters and they are my favorites personally alongside with Bolt. Tyson has 3 individual medals and so does Blake but Tyson has 2 gold individually and Blake 1. But Blake' 2 silvers are in the 2012 Olympics, probably the biggest stage in track and field history. Blake made a lot of finals and stayed relevant to this day. I say, Blake. When it comes to faster, I say Tyson because consistency.
@@Pumpxkin man I couldnt agree more lol. Tyson was so damn consistent in his prime. Its such a shame he got injured on 2008. I still believe july of 2008 was the most promising he had ever looked. Same with Blake in 2012.
Would have loved to see how their careers would have been without the injuries.
In 2008, Gay was probably running mid 9.7 but still not quite beating Bolt. Ngl if everybody was injury free, Tyson might beat Blake consistently, but both on their best day, maybe Blake takes it.
Love this
good arguments. fix your audio. there's a distortion.
"hE wAs a DrUg ChEaT"
So what? Yes he made a mistake and it turnished his career, but what he did was still incredible. PEDS don't give you an instant speed cheat. You still have to work for it.
This man has gone through a lot and you people beat the living shit out of him for it. He's human. He makes mistakes. Like all of us. Haven't you messed up before? Imagine being reminded and shunned for a mistake you made long ago. A mistake he could've possibly been framed for.
Tyson Gay was a great sprinter and deserves his flowers.
Couldn't had said it any better. Gatlin Coleman and Gay need some forgiveness. They regret their mistakes which make it even more forgivable.
Transdermal DHEA does not enhance performance!
Taking PED is a mistake?
Yes but drugs cheats I don't feel sorry for them they know what they were doing
The narrator voice made it sound like Tyson is dead already and we are doing a memorial video
It's tragic really. Literally the best 100m sprinters we've seen were competing around Bolt's ear. We had Walter Dix, Yohan Blake, Asafa Powell, and Tyson Gay. Put them in their prime in 2024, they would be dominating the sport.
Asafa Powell for me. Amazing technique it’s just a shame he couldn’t do it at the champs
underrated? no, he won when he could win in 2007, then he had injuries anyway he couldn't win against Bolt, then he become the second fastest man , then he tested positive and he disappered.
Usain Bolt was in those races slowly getting better. O
Justin gatin or Carl Lewis is the runner up
I am taking Powell for 2nd and Gay 3rd. Even tho I know Gay was faster, Powell's consistency does it for me. Only counting 100m tho. If we add in 200m then I gotta go with Gay
Tyson was an INSANE talent and I’m upset he didn’t have more olympic medals. Next to Bolt, I think Gay was the greatest sprinter ever!
u must be an American
@@RandalCampbell-h6o you must be ignorant.
Tyson ran 9.80 in 2012 and only got 4th
Can you do all Sub 9.8 Run in History. ❤
If not for Bolt and Blake, Tyson Gay would be the 100m and 200m world record holder and the faster man ever! He definitely deserves to be considered the 2nd fastest in history.
It's not just about times, it's about gold medals.
Good video and yes I agree Tyson is the 2nd best ever
For me its Bolt, Blake, Gay, Gatlin, Powell. I put Blake ahead due to more success in medals in Worlds and Olympics...Same with Gatlin over Powell.
Lol no, the 2nd greatest 100m sprinter is carl lewis followed by Maurice greene. Heck I would put Gatlin above Tyson because he won a lot more medals. Aside from 2007 and 2009, what major achievements did Tyson really win?
I agree.
OMG, Tyson Gay should’ve been the long standing World Record Holder. Had he avoided those random setbacks, he would have put down some even better times and received more medals. At one point in time, he seemed invincible…likewise for DeGrasse, as well.
Sept 20th, 2009 - 100m
9.69s
Does the numerous bans for PED's that pretain to Tyson Gay and other American sprinters have any bearing on a sprinters career average? It seems to me the Jamaican sprinters have had far fewer doping violations that the American sprinter community has had sprinters banned. America's top two "fastest" sprinters by time in the 100m both have had serious violations more than one each. I believe the Jamaicans are far less tolerant of the same violations, well I mean they never get that far in Jamaica and I applaud the Jamaicans for their integrity. I am an American
Wolud have been a legend had he not born at the wrong time.
BOLT AND BLAKE ARE LEGENDS
If Tyson Gay born either 15 years before (or 15 years after) Usain Bolt, he would be getting all the headlines like Carl Lewis did or more headlines than Noah Lyles right now.
Everyone was running for second back then but I agree that Tyson was better than Blake overall.
If Usain Bolt never existed, the sprinting debate would gonna be like basketball or football debate that would be hard enough to choose who’s the greatest overall.
It'd be Justin Gatlin, thank goodness for Bolt. 😂
He was no joke
Good enough to always behind the great USAIN BOLT
Unpopular opinion tyson got better because of asafa then again because of bolt and yohan. If he didn't have the push from those guys he wouldn't have gotten as fast as he did
check Asafa Powell sub 10 seconds stats, that will blow your mind.
I just have one question for you. Has Tyson gay ever beaten Yohan Blake over 100M?
Tyson Gay was supposed to be squeezed in between Asafa Powell and Bolt.
You have to consider the fact that asafa powell doesn't run 200 meters.
