  • Whats Up Everybody, Welcome Back!
This comparison video is purely for fun and riding, the opinions based in this are from my own personal opinions & experiences.
NO STEEL WAS HURT IN THE MAKING OF THIS SHREDIT EDIT.
Huge shout out to Sean Doyle of Devlin Custom Cycles QLD Aus for making these BEAUTIFULL Chromoly Enduro Frames, when Sean asked if I was interesting in taking ownership of one of his frames for a few weeks I was excited, in this video im riding his new Jester 170mm Front & Rear Enduro frame, when he then gave me the OK to do what I can on it and abuse it heaps I was super super chuffed.
After 4 weeks on the bike I couldn't get it to give in, couldn't make it creak or squeak and was well impressed with just how resilient it was on high speed rough and the huge Huck To Flats. I genuinely did not want to give it back but this video shows just how much fun we had in the making of it.
Being an 80s BMX and MTB Rider and racer ive always loved Chromoly steel frames, however as the progression of materials improved we saw the good ole Cromo fall behind as Aluminium and then Carbon grew as materials and manufacturing techniques increased substantially.
Most riders would never have known or even thought about the difference on the trail between Steel & Carbon, ride qualities can be finely varied based not only on suspension set ups & tyre pressures but the frame materials too.
What was once a standard material within the industry, chromoly is a light, strong steel. When it is butted and a frame is complete, Cromo can deliver a light frame that will perform beautifully and the best part is that it can be extremely easily repaired if needed. Chromoly is a very responsive form of frame materials and offers a large amount of absorbing properties while maintaining its form.
    IN SUMMARY --
SO, inch for inch Chromoly Steel is now as light as an Aluminum frame but offers what Carbon or Alloy cant and thats vibration absorbtion and pliability.
What this means for you on the trail is a RIDE that is DEFINITELY noticable, almost as if it mimcs the feel of lower pressure tyres without the loss of speed or control.
Carbon is the clear choice these days due to price points, design creativity and overall structural strengths but if you ever get a chance to ride a Chromoly frame then I say DO IT, you will absolutely love the feel & plushness, ESPECIALLY if your on a hardtail, this is where Cromo is a stand out choice for the die hard Hardtail fans..
There it is, a fact about something most or many would never have thought of but for me it was a great opportunity and excuse to have a ton of fun riding.
    Hope you enjoyed this one.

Alright here is something a little different, doing what I can to bend or break a Chromoly MTB Frame and had a load of fun doing it.
This isnt a full breakdown comparison but is me just trying to explain how nice and smooth and noteably plusher a Cromo frame can feel over carbon or steel. Hope you enjoy.

This bike is well above artwork, it’s also extremely sexy and functional. Here’s a proper slomo showing the spension in action.

Paul, thank you for the words and support, yep Cromo is still around but only made by premium builders these days. Seems the mass market manufacturers follow the numbers..

Nice edit and cool to learn there are people welding duallies out of chromoly here in Aus! There's a big difference in feel between steel and aluminium HT and DJs so would be interesting to see how that translates to a dually. Carbon hoops on a steel bike is an interesting spec choice as well

Cheers bud, I really wanted to go deep and do a serious comparison but figured it would only bore some and the ones it didn’t bore already know the diff.

most people who say carbon is better than steel have more money than skill

    • @FlowmentumMTB
      @FlowmentumMTB  ปีที่แล้ว

Once a true statement but these days it seems a Carbon frame is cheaper than CroMo.
Sadly the costs of steel have gone way up but I do agree with your comment as it still falls under the lack of knowledge mentality.
