Me too. Makes you understand that all the cool undeads aren't just some monsters, but people who had lives. thousands of dead people who suffer and can't find peace even after death. A truly beautiful agony of death.
The coda is what ties this song together from a chromatic pastiche of spooky music to a true requiem and a reflection on the unnatural horror of an immortal undead life. It is by no mistake that the ending part sounds like a requiem.

combinecommando001 Well, if you are playing a non-specialty hero i would recommend using the skeletons as fodder and to draw out retaliations in order to protect your other troops. With specialty they quickly become the most powerful stack you have.
The ending of the music secretly tells you.. Hey, putting everything aside, once we all were alive you know that? We all lived our everyday lives, but as time goes we passed away and can never rest in peace as we are forced into wars by necromancers as undead slaves, we cant see, or think, all we can do is feel eternal torment...
This ending of this theme is sad to me because is says the undead are forced to be the slaves of the necromancers instead of being allowed to Rest In Peace.
I always liked listening to this song at night when I was alone... Especially the ending, it always made me just really introspective about all the things in my life and it lended a certain melancholic detachment from it all. Listening to it years later really makes me wish necromancy were real. I'd kill to become a lich, to live forever and have the opportunity to spend eternity learning things without age or sickness or disease... That would be a real life worth living, or unlife in this case I guess.
Holy fuck dude.. It's 5 am and I'm laying in bed listening right now and most of the nights. I freaking love this theme.. I have dreams about becoming a necromancer or something like that.. I don't know how to explain better but I feel a bit the same way has you do.
The end of this song is just... Something else... It's.. Woah. When I'm playing and the song starts playing at the part around ~2:00 I always have to listen it to the end before ending my turn. It's just so magnificent and somehow it is so soothing - if there was a whole song like that I could use that as a thing to help me fall asleep, in a good way. God, gotta' love that one.
As a kid I noticed how as you build up the city hall you got more houses and in Necropolis you got more graves so I had this mental image that the undead residents just went to sleep in their graves and got up to roam around town, go to the tavern, market, etc...
TotalOverUltraSaLLy yes, its totally true :) but for example the ending is 100% ,,copy" of Totentanz :) but yes you are right both comes from dies irae :)
Check out the H5 soundtrack - it has Dies Irae as its main theme. Imagine my confusion when I played H5 and came back to H3 after a while just to hear H5's main theme at the end of this town's soundtrack! :D
This is truly a masterpiece for it fits so well the castle type. In this music, you can feel torment, sarcasm, sorrow mouvement and peace. P.A. Romero has been so inspired.
I love the explosiveness of the theme before it starts to become so melancholic and depressed right at the end. Conjures imagery of some tortured, Phantom Of The Opera-esque beast letting out all his anger and frustration before his anger turns to sorrow and regret. Only the best music can actually tell a story, but god be damned if Necropolis doesn't nail it perfectly. Actually LOOKING at Necropolis itself as you listen helps with that imagery, too.
Damn right. To me, the end is a reminder that necromancians aren't already power-hungry mercyless assholes. They are heartbroken widows, parents who lost their children, or people who lost their dearest friends and did all in their power to see their loved ones again They knew it was black magic. They knew they were crossing a limit that wasn't meant to be crossed ever, but they didn't care. They wanted to see their smile one last time.
I came to a different meaning. Its the rise and fall of necromancers. Starts off quite and then the tension builds and builds until it falls but keeps going. Similar to necromancers starting off as weak as they build their hoard till they become unstoppable until inevitably all must unite to take the them down before its too late and the problem they ignored seems unbeatable. In the game it would then repeat creating a cycle of birth and death.
Tbh, if a music/literature/art work has different meanings and is prone to different interpretations, that's when you know you've stumbled upon a masterpiece.
I remember in my childhood when I'd listen to it on a rainy and dark day in Poland... rain outside, melancholy music, atmosphere of those nostalgic times. I will remember this for the rest of my life and it's been at least 20 years now. No one who hasn't spent time with this game can every understand what it means for you
Imagine yourself walking down the dim hallways of a seemingly abandoned castle. The moonlight shines through the window and as you walk through, you feel the sense that someone is watching you. You turn around a corner and you see a flicker of light at the end. A room. You hastily approach the end of that hallway only to find out that the entity that was watching you is waiting for you. By 1:56, you gaze in horror as the vampire lord reveals himself. You try to shout in horror but no words come out. He lunges upon you and breaks your neck then, he hisses and plunges his teeth into your veins. By 2:02, you try to flail your way out of his grip as he sucks your blood but to no avail. 2:09 life slowly leaves your body as the vampire lord nearly drains you. 2:18, you take your last breath. 2:28, you are left staring lifelessly with your dead gray eyes at the ceiling of the Necropolis, mouth agape and purplish, as the vampire lord finishes the last ounce of your blood.
This game has such outstanding music, so amazingly well-done atmosphere and overall unforgettable gameplay..I love it so much! This is my favorite track of them all and I'd play as necromancers just because of it!
If for no reason other than the theme music, the Necropolis shall always be one of the favorite towns. How anyone will be the utter sepulchral majesty of this is beyond me.
I swear I find similarities with this theme (especially at 1:58) and the 5th movement of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, "Songe d'une nuit du sabbat"! I think it would be quite apt if it were really the case! (There's probably also connection with the Danse Macabre of Saint-Saens.) Anyways, really awesome, evocative theme! Also, necromancy is too good - my go-to tool against 200% AI's... or I might just be biased to playing Necropolis any and every time possible XD
The bit at 2:00 that people are commenting on is basically an old traditional Medieval melody Dies Irae (from Latin - literally 'days of wrath', part of traditional Catholic requiem) which is associated with death/requiem etc and has a long history of being used by classical composers. This track's opening theme basically is a variation of Dies Irae. The solo viola line from 0:44 is amazing too
The grail - you must find it it is dag up somewhere on the map (it could be either in the underground or above). Anyway, I love playing this town. It is genormous, especially if you upgrade Vampire into lords, Liches into power liches and Black Knight into Dreads. I just send the hordes of vampire lords in the midst of the enemies and have the Power Liches do their awesome cloud attack. Plus the Dread Knights double death blow is uncanny, better than the Naga Queens multiple sword attack
it feels like i played heroes 3 yesterday, even i playd it like 6 years ago, and in this castle it was so creepy, even the heros face - A ZOMBIE, creepy, that makes it so good.
The last paragraph seems to feel that after the undead are destroyed, the soul rests in peace. It was not their original intention to be transformed into cemetery soldiers and mutilate the living beings, but they are dominated by some evil forces. Although these soldiers are terrifying, they are also flesh and blood before their death. ; After returning to their respective cemeteries, these transcended souls seem to recall their past war years and their families, smiling at themselves in heaven. . .💀
@fikujez Now thats an army! Did you notice the towers of towns allways decimate the liches and only the liches in the sieges? Its a pain in the ass ofr me every time i play necropolis.
Ive made a whole dnd world kinda based with this song in mind, its a Egyptian flavored culture with a high worship of a death and life god that fight to keep the natural order of life's journey but anubis grants them the power the heal and to destroy with holy and necotic powers.
The ending melody is very similar to The Shining theme. It is still awesome though and it's not like there hasn't been any other homages to it! There is also one in the Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Song is called: The Curse of the Tongue.
The last part always seems to me like the undead remembering their past lives with deep sadness
I’ve always thought it was sad because the dead are not allowed to Rest In Peace.

The harpsichord is what did it for me.
THANK YOU! I've been looking far and wide for whatever what's called that makes this type of sound on the piano. Now I can find more of this lovely sorta piece.
I loved this town, but man did I hate the zombies - so slow!
favorite theme
The greatest theme in the greatest game ever created. The Necropolis theme is a dark masterpiece.
my fav castle
Anyway, I love playing this town. It is genormous, especially if you upgrade Vampire into lords, Liches into power liches and Black Knight into Dreads. I just send the hordes of vampire lords in the midst of the enemies and have the Power Liches do their awesome cloud attack. Plus the Dread Knights double death blow is uncanny, better than the Naga Queens multiple sword attack
zombies? what are t those doing not turned into skeletons?
Well written!
Так и есть
it feels like i played heroes 3 yesterday, even i playd it like 6 years ago, and in this castle it was so creepy, even the heros face - A ZOMBIE, creepy, that makes it so good.
You got to pump those numbers up
The last paragraph seems to feel that after the undead are destroyed, the soul rests in peace. It was not their original intention to be transformed into cemetery soldiers and mutilate the living beings, but they are dominated by some evil forces. Although these soldiers are terrifying, they are also flesh and blood before their death. ; After returning to their respective cemeteries, these transcended souls seem to recall their past war years and their families, smiling at themselves in heaven. . .💀
Best theme of the best faction. Suits perfectly
@fikujez Now thats an army! Did you notice the towers of towns allways decimate the liches and only the liches in the sieges? Its a pain in the ass ofr me every time i play necropolis.
Listen to the music and imagine how death is taking you!!
One of the best themes.. the end end is so painful!!!
When not playing the Necromancers: The poor enslaved souls...
When playing the Necromancers: never enough skeletons!
