In fact, it sort of reminds me of my gym teacher from elementary school. He was always preaching the importance of not smoking and giving out stats on heart disease, etc. Anyway, as it turns out he was a smoker himself and being in elementary school people were very immature about it, calling him a hypocrite and generally being stupid. And then it dawned on me that he has more authority to tell people to avoid smoking than any non-smoker.
Syn Gates is way underrated. He has a unique style. That alone is every guitarist's ultimate goal. He doesn't do all the legato bs, so his solos don't always sound difficult. Try playing some of his stuff (picking only) note for note. There's a lot of jazz influence. Syn Gates is only going to get better. He's Years away from peaking. That is scary.
James Ellis What?? A Jazz teacher?? He was a Jazz student but abandoned to play guitar with his best friend Jimmy in Avenged Sevenfold. He never taught anyone to play, as you can also hear form him in this video, playing is all he knows :)
Mat-Rig I did some research on this. Syn Gates did a Guitar Center class where he taught some kids(probably contest winners). Gates stated that he wasn't a good teacher. He said he liked jazz in one interview. I couldn't find anything to suggest he was a Jazz Instructor? Maybe James knows Syn?
Brian England He basically was the frontman of a contest organized by Schecter, decided 10 winners and had a meeting with them where he answered some questions and helped people with advices, but thats really diffewrent from teaching. I suggest you to watch videos form his master class though, the solos he performed are awesome! He never was a Jazz teacher trust me, he started playing with A7X at 19 years old and nobody that young can possibly be a good teacher :D
I love how here he’s all like I don’t think I’m helping anyone but then he made the Synyster Gates School several years later and it’s so cool in general how he’s just gotten better over time he is truly an inspiration and one of my personal favorite guitarists ever.
He does look like he'd be a mean guy but he's really not! I met the band backstage at a show during their taste of chaos tour and they talked to me like they'd known me their entire life! They're all great people!
Leave it to Synyster Gates to fuel my drive for music. Of all the music I listen to, Gates' style is most definitely my favorite, and since I play trombone as well as guitar, I can appreciate his style much more. I love his music haha
this is not that hard really. sweep picking is more of a showoff technique than a real skill. it takes some timing to get your picking hand in sync with your fretting hand but once you have it you have it.
baconater4000 How is that wrong? Sweeping is still a show off technique, when I was an ignorant child, i thought it was the coolest/hardest thing, but now that I have it down, its pretty stupid. What really impresses me now is the string skipping arpeggios that Paul Gilbert does, those are insanely hard to get clean.
This guy.... Is quickly becoming one of my favorite players. With the addition of the syngates school, he's showing a passion and ambition for all to learn, and bring back, the lost art of shred.... Love it
I learned how to play this by ear:) btw I agree syn is one of the best his dad is pretty good too,he plays on some of their songs. Syns style is unique not like most guitarists very jazzy and he doesn't do any of that legato stuff but when he does he adds a bunch of crazy and super fast slides in their! Over all I've seen him live and he's really good and he can pull of the cleanest sweeps on stage which a lot can't do especially with out a good amount of distortion. His style is very versatile and most unique. One of the best hands down!
A lot of people slag him off but if your a guitarist and you try to work some of his stuff out you quickly come to realise that he is very talented. The stuff like on nightmare is really technical and really well thought out. I love listening to his stuff.
I loved one thing about Mr Gates.....(oohhh i love him like crazzy).....He's a different man in front of paparazzi.....seems to speak slang words...but since he was here in front of kids, he seemed so controlled....no bad words...REAL THOUGHTFUL GATES....!!
Technically improvising maybe easy but improvising so melodically without repeating phrases and playing it so smoothly takes years to master. It only comes after one really knows the guitar well and has achieved huge amounts of maturity and understanding and has perceived knowledge and is musical at all the spot.
thats syn improv soloing over the chords to seize the day. it sounds great because it IS great be cause HE is great. hahaha he does show some of the best taste and style in his work. the slower he gets, the more amazing when you think about it
syngates is the best modern guitarist + matallica and iron maiden were say that avenged sevenfold are the best modern band (look the greatest band what they say. so I don't care for anyone else)
I gotta agree i have been working on the Seize The Day solo for about 3 weeks and im really good at it now. i love u Syn and i know u can't see this right now but i just want to tell u how amazing ur music is Thank You So Much!!!!
I don’t see a problem with a great guitarist like him taking time to teach kids or even just play along with some kids. To a guitar player he just MADE those kids day big-time. He damn sure does not have to take time to set a good example; he probably does it to help out the younger crowd. And thrust me, young kids today need the help. Great job Syn.
what a great guy and guitarist...... and he said that to be a good role model cause kids look up to him... im 40 and i look up to him....haha.... i felt that ending solo in my soul and it kind of reminded me of clairvoyants disease .... what a great sound and unique style syn has.... this guy inspires me so much and there is only notes A-G with sharps and flats? my point is that when you add your feeling + ur soul when you play guitar amazing sounds will come through...thanks SYN much love
Syn is just a Beast when it comes down to laying down the coolest guitar solos you will ever hear....he can do any sort of style and still make it sound fucking amazing.....also R.I.P Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan
I agree, I'd have to say he's not the best shredder out there. He's still my 2nd favorite 'cause he sounds awesome and has wrote some cool stuff. He also doesn't have an ego
Sam Jaco Well who do you think is better than him overall? I mean I can't think of any other guitarists that have had nearly as much of an effect on music and people overall. He's extremely tasteful and a great writer, as well as an improviser and jazz player. He's not the most technical, but he knows how to make his guitar say what he wants to say, which I think was lost in our generation. However, I was newly introduced to Tosin Abasi. He's a very impressive player, but he just doesn't move me the way Gates does.
Sam Jaco Alright he's really good actually. I don't really like his work with his bands, but his solo work is phenomenal. I feel like they should do that thing Slash and Zakk Wylde did with Voodoo Child. That'd be something to watch.
You don't have to have a dad who plays guitar really good to be a great guitarist. It just takes a lot of practice and will if you want to be a great guitarist. Syn was lucky to have a father like that, made his guitar playing much easier from the start.
Well, it makes sense that he would be a guitar teacher, because he's at least classically trained, and that's how he creates his riffs and scales. Especially sweep picking. At first when I heard about sweep picking, I thought it was something he created, but that would be goat thinking on my part. And these guitar students have to feel so honoured to be taught by such a talented and amazing guitarist as Synyster Gates. I haven't played guitar in such a long time, but I know I would be honoured to learn from him.
synyster doesn't know me... i might never get to talk to him on person but well... you're such a great inspiration syn honestly... as far as i can see you're nice to your fans.. you're more than awesome l:
i bet he talks so slowly because he can't swear

I am honestly surprised, I almost cried when I heard Synyster and the girl playing together, it sounded beautiful.
Mike Zanker I cried, people needs to know Synyster Gates.
Yeah...
@Daniel Nutt bro don't go that much but of course it's same little bit but not the same as seize the day
He looked so nervous to be there. (X Everyone there is so lucky to have met him! He will always be my #1 reason why I started to play guitar.
Same.
Yup Syn and the rest of Avenged made me return to playing guitar.....my musical insperation.......#1 player in the world in my opinion
same here too
Oh hell yeah

Before Avenged Sevenfold Syn was a Jazz guitar teacher, that's where his influence comes from
Thanks James. I didn't know that, but it makes sense.

why are you discouraging yourself bro?....
dude just learn some scales and learn economy picking its a great tool to cut your picking effort in half for playing really fast scales
this is not that hard really. sweep picking is more of a showoff technique than a real skill. it takes some timing to get your picking hand in sync with your fretting hand but once you have it you have it.
wrong, it's the easiest way to play arpeggios. the only other alternative i know of is doing insane stretches
