Fascinating material. Suggestions for future videos: (1) No need for the sidebar beyond a minute or two at the start (2) Try to synchronise the video better with the script so that when describing a building you are actually seeing the building being described...
Interesting that you pronounce it 'Al-sa'. I live in Ayr, most people I hear pronounce it 'Ale-za'. Who's to say who's 'correct' just interesting to see how people pronounce things differently
In the winter, it is snow capped. And looks, for all the world to see, like a big Christmas pudding. Other times it looks like king kongs forehead. Depends on your poetic perspective. It's also called the fairy isle.
@@Phil-oj5nr I just ask for consistency. If the island needs protecting, protect it. The rules that restrict human intervention should also restrict mining. If they have mining, they should remove the protected status.
@craigroaring No tourism allowed it's too destructive and every boat brings a chance to reintroduce rats to the island. A lot of Scotland is being destroyed due to tourism but the Scottish government just see the pound signs.
If it’s not bad enough hearing non-Scots mispronounce names we have a Scot mispronouncing Scottish names. Ail-sa not Al-sa. And Loo-ee not Lewis. We’re not Americans yet. Otherwise not a bad wee film.

I could see this from my West Kilbride window. My young boys named Ailsa, Nanny's bun as it looked like one of her rock buns!!
I’m embarrassed Ailsa Craig was only known to me as an onion until now. A very nice onion it is too.
It's also a potato variety
@@katanaki3059 and a tomato variety
Very interesting. Thank you.

I have never heard it pronounced as Alsa. The ‘Ail’ is always pronounced as in ‘Fail’.
@@kirsteneasdale5707 agreed, maybe this guy is doing some historical pronunciation of the name of something
@@zororat No. He is just mispronouncing it . 😂
@@kirsteneasdale5707 ha yes, I'm guessing he's not from Ayrshire
@zororat aye same here in Stranraer.
Been known as paddy’s milestone by my parents generation here in Northern Ireland, it’s visible from here in Co Antrim
Same it this side of the ferry, I remember my grandparents calling it paddy's milestone
Lose the permanent sidebar please.

Yes it's quite disconcerting
Decent video
Can you please pronounce the island name correctly?!?! The name is not ALSA. It is AIL-SA. AIL as in English for unwell.
And Robert LEWIS Stevenson?? Using American pronunciation instead of Louis the way the French meant it to be said.
In 1991 the island was cleared of rats, did New Zealand experience have anything to do with that?

Nobody else has mentioned this, but I was always given to understand it was ‘Crag’ not Craig’. Spelt Craig, but pronounced Crag.
No it is pronounced Craig! as in Gaelic Craic. Slainte
It’s pronounced ‘Ail’ as in ‘Fail’ and ‘aig’ as in ‘vaig’.
Lol we can't seem to get consensus on how it's pronounced in this comment section, would you agree he's saying the Ailsa bit wrong?
@@zororat in full agreement on ‘ale (as in beer) sa’
I don't think they should allow mining of granite if the island is protected. Such a unique place being mined for such a stupid reason.
The amount of rock used for curling must be very minor, not a worry I would say.

Where do you think the money comes from to protect it

Its not alsa craig its Ailsa craig
When I took my daughters to Scotland on holiday many years ago I told them that Ailsa was where Scotland kept its zombies to keep everyone safe😀
Must've sailed past her a hundred times. Bigger than I thought.
Ya the side bar. Is bull shit. Might as well block ya now.
