The Super Nintendo port was my personal first taste of this amazing game. The nostalgia for me is high, because my grandpa was an avid gamer with a large collection of NES games and a small collection SNES games, one of which was DOOM. If it wasn't for my grandpa, I may not be the DOOM fan that I am today, so I continue to honor his memory by saying "HAIL DOOM"

People are so harsh on the SNES doom port. It's a 32 bit PC game running on a system never designed for it. You can always say "Just cos you can, shouldn't mean you should" but tell that to the kid in 1995/early 96 who only owns a SNES, doesn't have the means to buy a PS1 or PC (yet) and craving some FPS action. Hindsight is always 20/20.

There's only a limit to how much things can be excused with hardware limitations before you think "okay, this is just not good". I don't understand how people could possibly play Doom at 10FPS. Just give me the 32x version and a Pantera CD to play instead of that version's soundtrack and I'm all set.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN, because it’s literally all we had. I didn’t notice FPS as a kid, I didn’t know it had “bad controls”, I didn’t think about how pixelated the enemies were etc. I had never played it on a PC, and if I had, I still wouldn’t have cared. I had Doom in some form on something, and I loved it.

Well, you'd be harsh on it too, if you paid $50 for the worst looking, worst running home console doom. It's a case of it being admirable that they could do it in the first place, but just like Mortal Kombat Game Boy, they shouldn't have done it. They just wanted munny.

Derfel Cadarn Williams published some good games for the SNES, near the end of its life cycle. Personally, I enjoyed the hell out of Doom for SNES. It's one of those games that, despite the console you play it, you'll always have a good time with it. By the way, remembering Williams made me remember Acclaim. That company reached the top of the world with their green screen technology, they were everywhere but soon enough they failed and went bankrupt. I'd love to see a documentary video about that.

    • @stonerdemon
      @stonerdemon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Derfel Cadarn Mortal Kombat console versions made Acclaim swim on money. Shortly after that, they developed "green screen", an update over the blue screen digitalization technology. That made them even richer, and the technology was used on movies like Batman Forever and games like Stargate. They were part of the N64 "dream team" and released Turok, which sold hundreds of thousands of units. They performed relatively well during the PS2/Xbox/GameCube era, releasing games like Burnout, Extreme G 3 or Aggressive Inline. But all of a sudden they went downhill. Don't really know why, though.

Have so much nostalgia for the 32x port. I remember going to my cousin's house back around '94. He had a 60" projection TV with a full surround system and the Genesis with the Sega CD and 32x. The setup blew me away as did the Doom port, especially for a kid like me who only had a 92 PowerMac growing up. Sure it isn't great, but at least it runs surprisingly smooth.
    Great vid as always

A thing to note is that most of the console ports of Doom (including the PS1/Saturn ones) were all derivates of the Jaguar version, which was the first developed of the console ports, and was the only one made by id themselves. It's also why they all feature the same simplified level geometry. The only exception is the SNES version, which unlike all the other ports, has the full level geometry from the PC original (with simplified textures) and some of the bigger enemies that the Jag/32X/3DO versions lacked. It was also the only console port that was licensed by id *after* it started development; it was coded as a side project by members of Sculptured Software, who later took it to id for approval. Sure enough, they said yes (or, according to a blogpost by John Romero, "oh hell yeah!") and it got released to market.
The 32X version was also gonna feature the original PC level geometry, but then they realized it took a toll on performance and so changed it to the simplified Jaguar levels.
Also, hell yeah on the Zero Tolerance mention, that game was great.

SNES port may not be the best but It's the most impressive. The graphics aren't great but they're decent considering this is on a 16-bit console, though the emulator you used made it look worse. Most of the levels from the first 3 episodes were left intact and weren't changed, in fact it has more levels than the 32X, Jaguar and 3DO ports. Also it was the first console version that could be played online via X-Band.

The GBA version of Doom "maxes out" at the Baron of Hell, with regards to enemies, so the subsequent boss levels don't have the proper bosses, just lots of Barons. The port of Doom 2 has more of the enemies.

I think the Doom port for SNES was incredibly ambitious, but didn't exactly execute it very well. Wolf 3D on the SNES in my opinion was actually a pretty good port minus the censorship. It ran pretty well for the most part, controls were tighter and responded much quicker than Doom, and it actually ran pretty well too.
Since you talked about the GBA port of Doom, it's worth mentioning that the GBA port of Doom II is incredible. All 32 levels are there and are completely unedited, except for the fact that two of the larger levels, Industrial Zone and The Chasm, are split into two smaller levels. It's gotten pretty rare to find nowadays, though.

TheNintendoFanatic I have this one in my collection. Brilliant version. Very good graphics, framerate and smooth controls. Only thing is that with every save its taking more and more storage space on vmu so after like 10- 15 saves you have no space on it, but they provided code system for every level, so you can save few times on each level and, as you progress to the next one, delete it and start level with code. You always getting set of the weapons according to the progress with about 30- 70% of ammo capacity for all of them (depends on type of the weapon) on the beginning. This way, on one hand, you can't conserve your ammo but on the other, you don't have to. You can drain your mags and on the next level you got it again. :) Weird, but works perfectly. Capacity of ammo is well balanced and it's probably very close to what average player would have left, after previous level. :)

The Snes version is probably one of, if not, the choppiest port but it's also made for the slowest of the ports. There are many things you failed to mention in the differences:
    1. The SNES version had real-time light brightness variation like the pc version, which virtually only a few ports actually did.
    2. The SNES has the closest texture palette to the PC version, as if you compare the first episode, you will immediately see the texture difference.
    3. The SNES had more levels than the 32x (i believe it was around 18 levels for 32x, while it was 21-23 on the SNES, it actually had 3 episodes)
    4. The SNES had all of the artifacts of the PC version compared to most other ports (nightvision goggles, invisibility, rad suit, etc, etc)
    5. The SNES actually had the red text to tell you when you picked items up, and needed a key like the PC version
    6. The SNES version actually had a boss, which the 32x version did not.
    7. The SNES actually had a map screen like the PC version, which updated as you progressed thru game.
    8. The SNES had all of the traps of the PC version unlike many other ports.
Both versions are good, but the SNES in my opinion outdoes itself on a 16 bit console. It took the 32x for the Genesis to be able to run it, and even then, it still didn't have the content it should've because it was cartridge. The 3do version isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, frame wise. Back when these games came out, the frame rate wasn't as noticeable as most people who had PC's couldn't even run doom at full speed (1993 to 1995).

I remember reading once years ago that 32X Doom was rushed to make the 1994 Holiday, which would certainly explain why there's so much unused code hidden in that port, why the screen is slightly windowed, & why the music is so terrible. Fans have since created much better Genesis renditions of Doom's music, showing that the official music was likely composed at the last second in order to make the Holiday release yet not be music-less like the Jaguar port wound up being (which I think was also rushed for the Holiday, but was at least ported by id themselves, making it the only port done by the original developers).

It's worth noting that most console ports of Doom were based on the Atari Jaguar port of the game, which was developed by id themselves, it explains the cut-down levels in most ports (except the SNES one, which oddly was based directly off the PC version).
The 32x port had the potential to be pretty decent, but it was rushed becaused SEGA wanted the game as a launch title for the system.

The 32X version probably has the most interesting history of these. The developers didn't have enough time to even properly code it. They only used a single SH-2 core to perform the raycasting calculations. There were plans to use the 2nd core, even worse was the situation with the music. They had fully intended to use the ADPCM channels for music or as they call it "Q-Sound". It was supposed to have all 3 episodes however they only got so far before someone said "quick, get it out the door". We were left with something fairly competent, but it could have been better.

Derek, I was one of those who had a Worm Light and beat "Castlevania: Circle of the Moon" without using it, so thanks for the props at 5:53, man. :D
Oh, and I have semi-fond memories of playing Doom when I was a kid. I say "semi-fond" because my older brother somehow hacked the game so I could play it without any monsters to kill. The plan was to change the enemy sprites so that it looked like they turned to stone and crumbled into dust when killed, but it wasn't good enough to pass the "Mom Inspection", so the monsters were omitted altogether.
"Wolfenstein 3D" fared better in that department, in that instead of seeing bloody corpses when I shot someone, my brother hacked it so that their bodies vaporized, leaving a pair of smoking boots behind. This passed the "Mom Inspection" with flying colors. But enough rambling from me. Keep up the brilliant work, Derek!

Fun fact: In the Super Nintendo and Sega 32X versions, monsters often appear to be walking backwards, or "crab-walking" sideways, because artwork is supplied only for their forward surfaces; No artwork is included to give monsters the appearance of turning or facing away from the player, In all other Doom ports monsters can turn and/or move in any one of at least 8 lateral directions.

In fact, It was my favorite game on the system, and I had not experienced anything better at the time, so from that perspective, it was beyond amazing, expecially considering that it was on a 16 bit console. Going off the book "Game Engine Black Book: Doom", John Carmack was personally involved in the 32X port of Doom, to the extent that he camped out at the Sega of America building to get it done. The reason for all the cut content was because Sega forced him to rush it so it could be ready for the launch of the 32X. Not to mention the 32X only had 512Kb of RAM, so cutting content had to be done anyways regardless of deadlines.
"I liked the 32X--it was basically two decent 32-bit processors (SH2) and a framebuffer, so you programmed it like on a PC, but with SMP long before it was mainstream on PC. It was still pretty underpowered compared to even a 386, so resolution was low."

I overclocked my copy of SNES Doom. It still runs like ass, you still get stuck on walls, the visuals are still absolutely retched, and now sound effects desync so consistent weapon firing has extremely random and inconsistent sound effect timings, but it is actually a fair bit more responsive to control which is pretty nice and the framerate is noticeably improved though still pretty terrible.
To be honest though I'd play the 32X port over the SNES one still if I wanted to enjoy my time and had to pick one. Just the fact that you don't get randomly glued to walls is enough for me not even considering the higher resolution and more responsive controls. I go back to the SNES one more though because if I want to play Doom I'm just gonna play it on PC but the SNES port is one hell of a technical marvel.
