Thanks for your step by step video. I was able to finish the project in about a hour or so (I nearly 80 years old). I'll make certain that I check the 'tightness' again, after I drive the car in a couple of day.
This was much more informative than the included printed directions. They actually don't cover attaching the crossbars to the brackets (i.e. they don't say to use the smaller bolts, or lining up the thinner front edge... nothing!). Can I ask, should I also be using included washers when attaching the Brackets to the Cross Bars? I noticed you didn't and wanted to know why you chose that route. Thanks again!
It looks like it's not a water tight connection where the part connects to the metal cross bar. How does the water drain out that gets inside the rails during rain or washing? Have you noticed any rusting?
They are sold on Amazon like you said but the specs don’t fit my Honda CRV 2019 as bars are too short. I tried and tried but could not find this type of crossbars but longer Love your video and love the ease of installation of these bars
Your instructions were perfect. Thank you. I have a question: The inside plastic thingies did not snap on any of the corners well. I know they were just cosmetic, but my question is should I put little vaseline to avoid any rusting?
I don’t think Vaseline will last long, not water resistant and not UV resistant. If you have something like flex seal, or something like it, those are rated for outdoor use. Or brush a little, very little so none gets on the paint, of rust preventions liquids the bolt.
@@AwkwardHamster I didn't understand. Wouldn't flex seal ruin it? Then I can't take it off in Winter if I wanted to. Aren't those screws made of steel? They shouldn't rust, right? Also, I need a video of installing the J mounts.
I should clarify what I was trying to explain. The flex seal was just for any plastic part you want to seal. Flex seal comes off easy. For rust prevention on the metal part, if it is something that may concern you in the long run a little wd40 or like substance would help. The bolts shouldn’t rust. Mine has been working fine and I haven’t seen any rust stains on the roof of my car after all this time. I wished I remembered to apply some oil to the bolts before installation. Not a necessary step but it’s something I do regularly now for other installs for piece of mind. I will likely get rid of the car after 15 years, long before rusting becomes and issue.
I found it difficult to remove the caps on the screw holes so instead I sprayed WD40 between the cao bottom and the side rails. Then I used a power screw drive pressing the tip hard at the center hole of the cap and set the drive to turn counterclockwize and the cap came off easily. The crossbars I got did not have slots on the brackets to screw the brackets to the cross bar. Instead it sits between the bars loosely and it could move sideways between the brackets. To prevent this I inserted the tip of rubber or flexible plastic shim securely in the space between the top of the bar and the top of the bracket, I trimmed off the shim afterwards so it is not seen.
I installed on 2015 Honda CR-V, and notice that my front cross bar sits higher than rear. I do have the front and rear crossbar in correct position, shouldn’t bars be level? Are brackets different heights for front and rear?
Thanks for the video. I just installed mine The awful instructions say torque the bolts to 10 ft lbs. This is way too much. The bolts are stainless but they will strip very easily. I tightened mine very snugly with a 1/4 ratchet and called it a day. I also used removable lock tite.
These seem decently durable compared to what I see for sale on Amazon. The link does not take you to product. Do they still make it? What is the brand?
Hi. I made this video to show that even the least expensive roof rack works. The one I got is unbranded. Besides, I believe all these low cost ones are the same. Someone probably bought it on bulk and resell it on Amazon with their own made up name.
Well done video that was easy to follow. I am probably going to get a 2019 CR-V Touring that comes with the rails. I was thinking that I wouldn't want to have the Crossbars on the vehicle all the time, but does it seem practical to take them on and off? It wouldn't take much time to do it and the more you did it the faster it would go. I just figured I would probably not use them much, but they would be handy when needed. This product seems reasonably priced and more than adequate for the use. Thanks
I wouldn’t recommend taking them on and off. Even with them on I don’t see them impacting gas mileage. Besides, removing it and reinstalling would take more time that isn’t necessary. I’ve used it to move ladders and mattresses. So much easier have them above the vehicle vs hanging out the back.
The roof side rails on the CR-V Touring sits flush on the roof so you can not put a cord around it. So you need the cross beams which are elevated above the roof.
What Cargo box did you end up buying to use with this? I have the same roof rack and want to make sure I get one that fits and doesn't interfere with antenna
I haven’t gotten a cargo box. I had to move a few large or wide items and now I like the versatility of leaving it open. Instead, I got a trail hitch. I plan to install the hitch soon.
I bought the least expensive no name brand on Amazon. I made this video to show any cheap brand on Amazon worked. I believe these various companies rebrand the same crossbars and that they bought the crossbars from the same manufacturer.
I mentioned in the video I purchases the cheapest one on Amazon. I can't pronounce the name Ruiang VOYAGE. Amazon listing may show a name like Ruiang but that name was not printed on the box. No name was printed on the box. I don't believe there is a difference between cheapest and second cheapest. These cheapest ones aren't as popular or as reviewed as the slightly more expensive ones. I wanted to save a few bucks so I bought this and make this video in case there are others out there curious about these basically no-name brand items. I still use the roof rack to this day.
Thank you for this. Certainly makes the first time easier after watching someone else do it correctly the first time.
Thank you

Thanks a lot, nice explanation

My crv doesnt have that rail that you expose those holes to bolt to I wonder if I can still install the crossbars? Do you know?
No you have to buy that rail
I have crossbars like this already installed on my crv. My question is, with the crossbars, do I need anything else to make the car roof rack ready?
It is ready to be used.

Good review. Mine did not include instructions so nice to visualize how to install the bars. Mine included one extra washer too!
Thanks
Thanks for the heads up

Did your CRV come with the rails used for the crossbars? If not, where did you get them and did you make a video?
Did you ever figure this out? Mine doesn't have the rails either.
@@mellsc766 Never did. I saw a few other ways to add after market kayak holders for the CRV and the wife is looking as well.
Does it matter how the rail is installed whether the slimmer part is pointed towards the rear?

Does anyone know of a way to attach a ring to the rails that would allow using a soft luggage bag that lays on the roof?
Crossbars are not manufactured by honda, they are made by JAC Products, for honda, as well as the pieces already on your roof
A very thorough explanation.. Thank.
Thanks
Thanks for walking through this!
Thank you
Thanks! Any complaints about the bars so far?
No issues. Glad I got this. Next item I plan to install is a trail hitch. I’ll get to it when it’s warmer.
My 2021 CRV has rail caps that cannot be popped off
An Allen type is required
Look good to me. Nice job! I'll like to install one my 2015 CRV but my didn't come with the side railing so looks like I got more jobs to do.

This fits a 2004 crv? I looked it up on Amazon and it says not compatible.
Amazon sells many models at almost the same price so I would recommend buying whichever one Amazon says is compatible
What is the distance between the cross bars? I'm thinking of using a roof bag that is 40 inches long, and 36.5 inches wide.
Thanks. Very clear. I think I can do this myself now.
Excellent
Thanks. What is the width of the bar? 3 inches or 5 inches? I want to put a bike rack on it but don't know if the bar width fits the rack or not.
2.5 inches
Did you happen to know the weight limit of these? Thanks!
Support up to 165 pounds.

@@AwkwardHamster Thank you for the reply. I used the racks for a load of wood from Lowes. Very convenient.
Good these hold a 10 ft kayak do you think?
Yes. They sell Kayak mounts for roof racks to secure it in place.
Could you tell me the size of bolts that go into the roof rails please
I don’t know because I didn’t measure the size before installing.
What is the brand of your roof rack and has it held up since you posted this? Thanks!
I found my answer below. Thanks!
Cool
Helpful video!
How is it holding up?
Holds up well. Very glad I got it.

Hi !!!
What is size and tread bolt going in to the rail ?
i have antenna to install ?

Hi, Did you get the size and tread for bolt going in to the roof rail?
Do you know the screws size (at 1:09)?
What’s a good bike rack that would fit these bars?
I haven’t shopped around for a bike rack yet. That’ll come when they get older.
How long did this project take start to finish?
Roughly 30 min. Took me longer because I was recording this video.
Do you mind posting the link where you purchased this from? I’d like to buy one for my 2019 HRV.
Link is in the video description. Thanks.

It’s a generic crossbar. I placed the link to the item in the video description

Gave me really bad wind noise starting at 30 mph. Auh!
My guess is the blades are facing the wrong direction.
The coloers of the roof rack and roof rails don't match.
