  • BRADFORD PARISH #8: WROSE
Welcome to Wrose in the City of Bradford, which is located about three miles north of Bradford city centre, and just to Southeast of Shipley. It sits on top of a hillside at a height of around 600 feet above sea level, overlooking the Aire valley and the Bradford valley.
Wrose is surrounded entirely by unparished areas of Bradford such as Windhill, Woodend, West Royd and Idle Moor. Wrose is a largely residential area. A lot of the houses here were built in the 1930s after a whole host of 17th century buildings were demolished to make way for them.
Wrose has been a civil parish since 2004 but its name has been around since at least the 16th century. Its most industrially prosperous period was during the 19th century. Wrose was an important centre for quarrying and to a lesser extent, brickmaking. Lots of quarry remains can be found within the hillside on which Wrose stands.
Quarry growth exploded as the city of Bradford grew with the wool trade. A lot of Bradford’s famous mills were built using stone from Wrose. Whilst many of them have closed, one quarry is still operational - that being Bolton Woods, just outside the parish boundary.
Famous people to come from Wrose include Dawson Jowet- the founder of the Airedale beagles hunting pack in 1891, and the comic and actor Adrian Edmondson who was born in Wrose but grew up in nearby Idle
It’s a two hour walk. Lets get moving!

Wrose is 1 of my favourite parts of Bradford. On Walk 5, is of particular interest to me as I went to Explorers around there; someday, I'll post a video of a walk I did around there a few times in that time!

I once commented on your Swanland, East Yorkshire video and just watching your Wrose in Bradford. You were literally 20 yards from my house house! Could have made you a cuppa. 😁

That's one thing you can count on in Yorkshire, how friendly people are and you will always get a good cup of tea.

After the Jowett factory closed the building was taken over by International Harvesters tractors in the early 1960’s. My Father worked there from 1965 to 1982 when it closed. He was transferred from the Doncaster works and that is why our family moved from Doncaster to Leeds ( my parents preferred the educational system inLeeds)

Yep that's right! International Harvesters is now where Morrisons is, they have a history of the place on display in their store

I think there's a quarry in Eccleshill just outside Fagley that still cuts stone.

Trying to say "Wrose Road" fast three times is a bit of a tongue twister!
I always associate Bradford with urban areas, and not more rural areas or countryside, I'm enjoying this series!
