  • Ansellia africana is a hot growing, sun loving orchid from a large portion of Africa. In this video I briefly touch on care for this one (I made a more detailed care video recently and added a link to it at the end of this video) and compare two varieties of the species with VERY different looking flowers from different parts of the continent.

    Welcome to the CareCollabs, we all have to gain from your expertize. Those plants are glorious, so wonderful that you have two varieties, both awesome. Wish I could grow them, I just fear my climate is not warm enough, winters not bad but summers are mild, never hot.

      Ya, it might not do quite a well. If you're interested in similar looking orchids, there are several intermediate growing Cyrtopodiums from the Brazilian highlands that might do well.

    Welcome Stephen. Very beautiful plants you have ..I was saying in my video. My previous Ansellia I put out on the east side of my greenhouse behind the fence where it got full on sun and morning to noon then again reflected sun in late afternoon but the spot was insulated and retained heat. The plant loved it...and bloomed very floriferous every year. Thanks for sharing

    That is what I'm talking about 🤩🤩 ypu sitting down and one of them on the floor next to you ... love it! And once 'they' get around to comparing all the differences in this genus, I am sure 'they' will start separating them out starting with the different flower shapes 🤷🏼‍♀️ beautiful blooms, both of them... I would have a hard time choosing one if they stood in front of me and I could only pick one. Forgive me for asking, if you mentioned this in your previous video and i forgot, are they fragrant? Thank you so very much for being so accomodating regarding this video... I really appreciate your flexibility. 🙏🌸 have a great saturday 🌸

      They do get tall! There is a compact variety that I've seen on an Orchid Digest (Lourens Grobler was the speaker) lecture this past October that was blooming size, maybe 6" tall? They do exist, just tough to find!

    OMG they are all beautiful ! Unfortunately the leaf tips (2-3 inch) dries up and I see occasional fungus on the tips. There is lots of heat and light but perhaps I overwater or underwater or the high humidity where I live might be a problem ……

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leaf tip die back can be a sign of over fertilization. Could that be an issue for you?

    • @alexandragc6817
      @alexandragc6817 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SVKLOrchids you might be right ! I will be more careful with fertilizer in the future ! I fertilize very weakly ( 1/8 to 1/4 tsp per 2 gal. ) but quite frequently. (3-4 times per week ) will give it a try to fertilize less. Thank you for your kind comment ! Much appreciated! Love your videos !

    I have a species Cattleya that's outgrown it's clay pot. I don't know how to get it out of the pot without destroying it. I soaked another cat in a clay pot hoping to loosen it but no dice! Got any ideas or tips or is it excisional surgery?

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually end up just plopping the whole pot into a larger pot and letting the plant walk out of the existing pot. You have to make sure the current media is good to last several more years to do this. If not, I take a hammer and smash the pot!

      @@smallshebear I just moved it outside behind a lattice wall where there is lots of sun. I hope it doesn't burn in our Florida hot sun. I once had it outside and it is a light weight plant with long canes and leaves on the top portion. A strong wind knocked it over and broke two canes. That is why I was keeping in my porch. I now inserted the pot into a holey ceramic pot that will not blow over. Thank you Ulla.
