Seeking Seclusion at Lynyard Cay (MJ Sailing - EP 47)

  • The cold fronts have passed, and we are experiencing perfect weather in the Bahamas!
    With a 2-3 day break between overcast skies and high winds blowing through, we decide to take the boat somewhere new, sailing about 13 miles south from Elbow Cay (Hope Town), and Little Harbor. Conditions were perfect and it felt great to be flying all our sails.
    On our way to Little Harbour though, we were distracted by the secluded beaches of the island just north of it, Lynyard Cay. Looking to escape everything for a few days, it looked like the perfect place to drop anchor and be all by ourselves.
    With the nice weather we did get the chance to get in the water, but came up with no coral for viewing and no fish or lobster for dinner. Exploring the next day at the southern end of the island, we found it was much more cruiser friendly with public beaches and a trail over to the Atlantic side.
    Loading Georgie up in the dinghy and checking the place out, we decided it was the perfect spot to sit and wait out the easterly blow that was about to hit us for the next few days.
    Cheers from the Bahamas!

    If you guys like fresh Mutton snapper just troll a 3-4" spoon with a 5" wire trace as you sail through the shallows of the Abacos. You'll likely catch barracuda this way also and a small chunk of cuda makes an excellent bait for snapper. Slide a 2oz sinker on your line and tie on a 3/0 hook... while anchored toss that rig out behind the boat and take a nap or sip a beer at sunset and within 30 min you'll have a nice one on. 20lb flourocarbon leader is perfect for the bottom rig.

    Excellent views! When does Jessica's movie contract start? With her eyes audiences would be captivated. I'm curious about if Georgie has ever gone into the water (intentionally or not)?

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She has.
      By us- In the Cayman Islands, we forced her into the water to make sure she could swim and climb back up into the boat (she did both with ease).
      Her own fault- She fell in a few times when we were tied up in a marina in Guatemala (too rambunctious and slipped off the deck chasing stuff). One time while anchored in mexico she came into the cabin soaking wet. We thought it may have rained, but the deck was dry, so our only conclusion was that she fell in and got herself back aboard.

    One of your best yet! Beautiful scenery! Brilliant photography!
    This has been a very long road for you and I have to ask, do you ever sit back, take a sip of your favorite beverage and fondly recall all of the hard work, moments of frustration and sacrifice invested that brought you to where you are today? If not do it now. You are "Living the Dream". Thousands are sharing your journey and almost without exception would like to trade places with you.

      Thank you for the compliments Don, that really means a lot! Yes, just about every single night that I'm able to, I sit in the cockpit as the sun starts to get low in the sky, sip on a beer or a glass of wine, and think about how incredibly lucky I am and how long the road was to get there. Even when things are bad, I don't take a single second for granted. 😍⛵

    Love your videos guys and also love Georgie as I have a cat that looks very similar. Very curious as to how you deal with the box on the boat (cat box that is). Would greatly appreciate a reply when you have a minute and thanks

      The litter box is installed under the companionway stairs. If you check out our past episodes (maybe 2 or 3?) it shows the set-up. It works great to keep Georgie's business out of our sight and smell range. So far, so good.

      MJ Sailing : Well, considering the volume of information you folks provide on each episode, you all do extremely well. I would be so tongue -tied that I could start a companion channel on TH-cam just for the outtakes and flubs. I’m in awe of how handy you guys are. There are reasons why many of us “armchair sailors” are watching and not sailing. Because for me, if I relied on my skill set to either “sink or swim”, I would be doing oh-so-much of the former than the latter! Keep up the good work guys!

    I got one of those T.V. shrinky hoses for my cockpit sprayer and it's great for keeping the mess down. Only legit use for those things I've ever seen. Why do your knobs have "H" and "J" on them? What's that thing on top of your dodger 7:07 that looks broken? Why are both of your sheets 7:25 on the starboard side of the boat? You can access private beaches in the Bahamas up to the mean high water mark, so even not being quite sure where that actually falls (likely where the signs are posted), it is legal for you to take your cat or dog to the sand for a squat.

    Don't know when your time frame was but it's been one cold front after another in the Bahamas since the beginning of 2018. Cut into our cruising plans too, as we spent more time dodging them in marinas than sailing...

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think we made 5 stops to Marsh Harbour just to wait out northerners. At least this next one we're waiting for here came out of the east and gave us a few more options of places to hang out. But we absolutely have done less cruising than we want because of them. 😓

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael,
      No Loos gauge anymore since the one from the last boat is too small. We just get the mast straight, hand tight, and sail it a bit tightening on each tack until the leeward shroud isn't too slack or the mast head isn't falling off.
      Matt

    Love your hot and cold water hose colors! Does your hose have a valve to switch from salt to freshwater? I find that bronze valves hold up far better than house faucets. I was amazed to see you paint on the hull vs ? making a decorative wood nameplate for the stern... Nice to see you have some sun :-) Enjoy the ride!

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for following along! We had saltwater at the galley sink on the last boat, but didn't use it much. With the watermaker, we really don't see the need for saltwater on this boat, so saved a through-hull.
      Matt

    • @captainmarkgray8856
      @captainmarkgray8856 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like salt water because it is better to wash down the wood with than fresh water and for our Jacuzzi as it feels so squeaky clean. We also had a water maker but would just rinse ourselves off with fresh water after a salt soak bath / Jacuzzi and use fresh to rinse our dive gear etc... I used another high pressure pump also to kick up the pressure for our cockpit hose fitting for the short shower or long boat washdown hoses. What cost the most were all of the "made for sea water) bronze valves. A day at the Chandlery under $1,000 was a miracle.

    I don't own a boat. But why do people anchor so far away from land. I mean can't you be like a hundred feet away?

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on depth of the spot you're anchoring, and allowing for swinging room. Most boats have a draft of, let's say 5-6 feet, which means that to feel comfortable about where they're anchored, they'll want to be in depths of at least 8-9 feet (and you have to account for a falling tide). When you anchor you let out 5:1 scope of chain, which for 10 foot depths would be 50 feet (but likely you would put down more). Although it is not likely that you would straighten out ALL the chain you let out, you have to make sure that if you swing 50 feet closer to shore, the depths below you are still going to be at least 8-9 feet to accommodate your 5-6 foot draft. To find a spot like that, it usually means you're anchored fairly far from shore, especially in the Bahamas where there is lots of shoaling and the shallow areas can run out for ages. 🙂

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Often, in this area, bugs are horrible if close to shore.... go just a little bit further out, and they leave you alone.

    I like how you show the good and bad weather many don't realize the Bahamas are very windy and can be very cool in the winter months. Specially the northern Islands.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We always heard that about the Northern Bahama Islands, but being from Michigan, we assumed it was a bunch of wimps that couldn't handle 75 degree weather :) Either we have changed or it really does get cool.

      Future episode will explain that. We're debating going with an a frame mainsheet set-up vs the short travel that totally impairs forward vision.

    Instead of trying to protect your pex with electrical or rubber tape (as it goes through bulkhead); the auto industry uses a hard corrigated plastic split tube (usually for cabling) 3/4" or 1" are available & you can by it by the foot...inexpensive & effective protection. Thanks for the great videos

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JIm, What you see in the video is split wire loom cut into 3" lengths protecting the tube as they go through the bulkhead. It's not the best stuff I've used (bought on Amazon) but should be sufficient.

    Awesome video! Would you consider explaining how your mechanical adjustments can compensate for weatherhelm... the more detail, the better. I am trying to learn. Thanks

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doc, It's still a work in progress to eliminate the weatherhelm. Basically, my first approach is to straighten the mast and eliminate rake. This movers the center of effort forward (the front of the boat now pushes to turn away from the wind) of the center of lateral resistance. But, having now spoken to a guy with the same boat, it seems that the weatherhelm is just a design fault and would be difficult to eliminate without moving the mast base or adding a bowsprit. We'll have to put more time into sailing her before I can give a better answer.

    • @davidbutt406
      @davidbutt406 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      From decades of dinghy sailing, weather helm is pretty much impossible to remove on a monohull, as the shape of the hull exposed to the water changes as the boat heels. If you could keep the boat upright, you might achieve near zero weather helm, as can be done on a catamaran, if the Ackerman angle is properly set.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We didn't notice the change to heeling hull as much with the Sabre, but this boat is very pronounced even 5 degree over. Our biggest fear with the weather helm is trying to get the wind vane working properly.... and stressing the autopilot. I would like to keep a bit of helm, but the 5-10 degrees currently is way too much and surely slowing us down a lot.
