Marc....viewed this video last night....today I went to AD to pick up factory nato strap for my BB58...my wife brought in her engagement ring to place diamonds on new settings...she then told me a guy ordered a Rolex sub black with date and declined to buy...she gave first crack at it....firstly, I was not ready financially to to spend $8100....she also had a black explorer 1 and 2....I love watches but I will not buy a watch unless I can buy outright....she told me the next time she has other sports models in this situation she will think about me....also, didn’t like the cyclops date window....very interesting....also I guy came in and wanted the new Pepsi steel....she told him that she didn’t have it...he then asked “can’t you just order it”....after he left she said she was amused at how my eyes were popping out of me head at this guy...lol....fun day!
There are very few new Rolex models that are unobtainable from an AD and we all know the pieces selling at double retail these as you say you will not get, in my experience all the rest are available within a few months and I would never pay over retail unless you really love that piece, you offer some very good advice given for the inexperienced buyer
Looking forward to the “how to sell a watch” video as I always find this tricky and as you say the seller doesn’t get as much protection via PayPal. Thanks for another great topic and video.
Thank you, I'm new to this disease I share with you. I recently brought a Breitling Limited addition Transocean 1915 through Amazon. It was from a third party seller a watch store in NYC called The ChronoStore. All the information was there on the Amazon listing, description and pictures. It was Box no papers and Amazons warrantee. I was even able to talk to the seller about the watch and after I ordered it I was able to get them to size it and I also got their warrantee. My feeling on Warrantee in this case is if there is an issue down the round I would send it to Breathing, it's their in house manual wind movement and their isn't many flowing around out there. The Watch was bill as a new watch never wore as in it was a display model. It still had the sticker over the display back and what was left of the plastic over the lungs and a clear plastic case guard on it. The watch retailed new for $9,200. I bought it for $4,275. For a newbie I think I did pretty well, do you have any thought on Amazon as a source they sell lots of luxury watches.
One sold in November on eBay for $3000. Typically Amazon is one of the higher priced places you could buy from. Collectors rarely use Amazonas a source for this reason.
Hi Marc, another helpful vid, keep em coming. Ive bought & sold watches from all 5 of ur methods with the majority of the transactions being successful (probably luck had more to do with it) I did however recently sold my 2016 Sub 116610LN on "Offer Up" a forum similar to Craigslist to try to save all the eBay fees & maximize my return. Now this site is notorious for ppl looking to "low ball" ya on the price & I did, in fact, get some RIDICULOUS offers. But hey... I knew what the watch was worth ( boxes, tags, warranty card) so it took a while but eventually someone saw the deal & bought it. I paid 7500, wore it for a year & 1/2 & got 7900 AND didnt have those fees to pay
Awesome video! I'm just getting into watches and this is great advice. Thank you. I subscribed, can't wait to go through the rest of your videos. Hope you have a Merry Christmas
You also briefly mentioned new watches. Going the airport route on that one is pretty interesting (especially for Rolex, Tudor) as for the tax (VAT) return. Perhaps a nice topic for a future video.
Wiggle Yourchins Actually you are not avoiding taxes as they are paid. Check the numerous watch forums on how this works. And perfectly legal. How else would you think all those DateJusts are sold on airports by for example Asians. The pants thing however might not be legal in many countries.
Very informative video! I'm in the market for a Rolex and you've given me a lot to think about. Also looking to consolidate my collection so I'm very much looking forward to your video on selling. As usual, great content Marc. Happy Holidays!
Marc, there’s a lot of overlap in the various options you discuss. I really enjoy your videos but you almost exclusively speak about modern Rolex watches currently in production. It would be interesting if you devoted some time to vintage or more recent models like the 5 digit Rollies that are no longer in production but whose price has been shooting up of late.
Good advice Marc. Thank you for making this video. I think prices are going to come down on some of these. Rolex is strong I know but other companies are discounting big time like Breitling. If you only get Rolex than patience will pay off as I think prices on the used market are coming down a little.
I agree 100% with what you say abought Ebay. I have been selling on EBAY for 20 years with 100% feedback, however, the few times I have had issues as a seller EBAY was not there for me. If you are selling a high ticket item on EBAY and the buyer is a dishonest person with nefarious intent, EBAY has created an environment where they will have a very higher degree of success. EBAY protects the buyer not the seller, you could be completely careful and diligent as a seller, literally video tape the entire process of packaging and shipping the item, and EBAY will very likely not stand by you during a fraudulent dispute. If you dont believe me do a quick search on TH-cam and yo will find 100s of experienced sellers with similar stories.
This is simple and you taught me this....An AD takes the first 38 ISH percent for the sale.Rolex then must take the lion's share from what's left? That means the watch itself in order to break even is Jack shit of the RRP? Ok ,so how much is anyone prepared to be robbed to buy a brand? Yes that are nice but not that nice? Cheers.
If you live in a big city like me, Craigslist shouldn't even be a option. You will get set up and robbed, or you will get a fake watch. I keep my gun on me at all times. I don`t want to have to shoot someone over a watch. I will stick with the safer options. 😂😂😂😂
Marc! The word “gray” is a name. It’s “grey market”. Busting ya chops!😂😂🙃 Ok my fellow Yid: I bought my Tudor blue pelagos with new in house movt. Runs in Rolex specs! Of course I had the cash in hand. I pulled a ‘Monty Hall’ and said “let’s make a deal.” Let just say I heard crickets. This is Bham, AL (ROLL TIDE!, and the discount I did get is 10%. They paid my tax and they didn’t break Rolex policy. Was it a good deal. I’ve had it a year and a half and other than my new seiko skx 009. Blue lagoon turtle, and a tissot powermatic 80 chronometer. Free sprung movt and stupid accurate. The Tudor is ny far the most worn. Tell me I didn’t get fisted? Or if so be gentle and say “it’s ok they used lots of KY.” Keep it up bro!
you promoted kenny nguyen jewelers on time twice. his company redialed my 1675, fair to poor chinese dial according to dfw rsc, kept the checkered rolex old dial and refused to make it right. 1983 ad purchase worth far less and can never be serviced at any rolex service center. be careful and dont trust all youtube promotions.
Paying by wire, even to a large “reputable” dealer, is a mistake. I know from recent, personal experience that one of the dealers you mentioned sells Franken-watches. I paid $6k and it appraised for $500 and the serial numbers were “incorrect” according to the manufacturer. I got my money back through the credit card company after a lengthy, detailed claims process. Had I wired the money, I’d have been screwed. You are doing your viewers a major disservice by vouching for big, reputable dealers. At least one you mentioned is every bit as crooked as the guy in the alley, they’re just better at covering their tracks.

How can you tell if a Rolex has been stolen? As far as I know Rolex wont help you with checking serial numbers validity
Awww 😍 Thanks Marc
Sorry if I missed it, did you mention Chrono24?

Marc, how did you manage to buy your 43mm sea dweller from an AD if you aren’t the VIP that you mentioned?
I had a fan at the AD

Wrong again, not only is box n papers important but so is ur cert and verification of that cert.
