  • ORIGINAL PRESENTATION - World Saxophone Congress, 2015 Strasbourg France
    The goal of this presentation and masterclass is to establish the history, significance, and use of the bebop scale in jazz improvisation. The overall concept and musical content is appropriate for any saxophonist, educator, or improviser looking to broaden their understanding of foundational jazz language. Tailored to saxophonists, this masterclass covers the following topics: construction of bebop scales, when to include or exclude additional half steps, an approach to starting on any note of the scale, the distinction between ascending and descending scales, extending bebop scales further than an octave, harmonic simplification, excerpts from classic jazz saxophone solos that demonstrate variations of the source material, and an accompanying resource (handout) of examples that clearly and completely identifies bebop scale possibilities over a wide variety of harmony. Each of the stated topics relate to the vital technique of placing chord tones on downbeats during an improvised solo. Saxophonists will benefit from this approach as the primary objective of any improviser is to create linear lines that incorporate direction and clear harmonic intent. Bebop scales provide the necessary foundational material that is historically used to accomplish that goal. This presentation combines personal experience with reference material, creating a new method of approaching and applying bebop scales.

    Nice presentation... Thanks, Dr. Chamberlin. It is very helpful when you play what you say. Would be nice sometime to hear these great ideas played in the context of a rhythm section. Some of us learn better by ear. The more you talk the more you lose some of us.... but the more you play the more we are drawn in. Kind of like when a painter talks about colors.... or shows you the colors... big difference. Keep up the excellent work. Well done!

    That's why i love America so much as a French because it is the only country where a very «serious» army general can talk about bop and melodic minor scales. Fantastic!😃👍

    I'm 70. I've been playing for about 5 years. This is the stuff that really daunts me. I just ain't got the time to learn all this theory. Does one really need to learn all this theory to be able to improvise? I just use my ear.

    • @rillloudmother
      @rillloudmother 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the bebop scale is pretty essential for understanding the links between the various pitch collections and diminished harmony from a linear and harmonic perspective.

    • @akarchive0508
      @akarchive0508 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alan Roche no, you don't need theory to improvise. Theory might help you, but essentially you use your ear over theory.

      Hi rilloudmother, I must try to remember that when it's my turn to solo on Chameleon with my band. I'll have to say: hold on boys, let me check my 'diminished harmony from a linear and harmony perspective' first. The trumpeter will say: right on cos it's pretty essential. See I've been listening and playing the tune: I know the melody; I know the key I'm in and I know the notes I've already been playing, cos I have the phrases under my fingers. I just close my eyes cos I know where I have to go on my instrument to produce the sounds I hear in my head and I have the responses from the rest of the band. There are only 7 notes. All one needs are the 12 major scales. Actually just one: the Chromatic Scale Let your imagination and your musical ear take you where you want to go. Obviously you need your scales; they're the building blocks. Exploration is the key and not being afraid to take risks. What's the difference between Ionian mode on C and C Major? Or Dorian Mode on C and CMaj? Ionian starts on the root and dorian on the second degree of C Maj: all the notes are the same. So however many 'titles' you give to 'scales' the notes are always the same. It's up to the player to find how to arrange them. Exploration and experimentation and listening is and not being afraid is what creates music. Oh and three hours a day - don't forget your long tones! They're really are essential. Bless you

      Totally agree. Basic understanding of Scales and getting them under your fingers. And listening.

      are you saying that being familiar with the bebop scale and its harmony is not necessary to playing jazz?
