All of Bird’s solos are incredible, but this is one that is particularly special! Everything from the time, to the structuring of the solo, to the way he develops his motifs, etc… This solo truly demonstrates why Bird is one of the greatest musicians of all time!
This is the saxophone transcription I've been playing and practicing probably the most in my life. For a long time I had it up against the wall, and it always feels so nice to play this one, because all the lines are beautiful and outline perfectly the sound of every chord!🔥 It's like the perfect bebop solo to me. And by the way, I'm pretty sure Patrick Bartley is influenced by this solo as well, as I see some parallels with his superb solo on "After You've Gone" from not too long ago. 😎 I initially always played it from a transcription I found on the web and I've seen several others, but there were some adaptions I made for myself, so here is my version finally. A few notes: I decided to go with the basic/generic chord progression from the real book, as that's how we usually practice Cherokee, so that makes the most sense I guessed. But if you listen closely, Efferge Ware, the guitarist has a few variations in his comping. For example the bVII7 (the F7) sounds most of the time like a IV-7, Cm7. Also with the turn arounds to G6, he approaches the D7 with Eb7 sometimes. And most importantly, notice how he doesn't really II - V - I's the much dreaded bridge. He simplifies to V - I: Eb7 for two bars, Abmaj7 two bars, C#7 for two bars, F#maj7 for two bars and so on. This is basic stuff, but thinking like that when you play the tunz really can help you create more horizontal lines and make everything more fluent, instead of wrestling through them changes. Anyway, these additional notes are already getting bit long here. Should do a complete analysis video on this one, and hope to do it soon, if time allows! (need to find food and shelter too in meantime) Jorre
Why does the 5 (D7) have a sharp five on it at 1:20? He resolves to the five twice but it's an A natural. Why arent all of the D7s altered with a sharp five? Like at 0:18, why does he play a Gminor7 arpeggio over D7 only to play the 5 (A) as a natural for the remainder of the song? Why use Gm7 over D7 if D7 is resolving to Gma7?

In my humble opinion, the Charlie Parker solos that have his best Bebop language are Cherokee (1943), Dont Blame Me (1947), Donna Lee (1947). For anyone that wants a really thorough analysis of Parker's Bebop language, check out Bebop Guitar by Joseph Weidlick. Even though the book says Guitar, it can be applied to Keyboards, Horns, Bass, etc. Thanks, and keep the great transcriptions comming.
This a great solo, great video, and great transcription. But in my humble opinion, I’m not sure it is bebop. The relative lack of chromaticism, the emphasis on lower chord tones (below the 9th), and the modest amount of rhythmic complexity buts it more in the late swing/pre-bebop style. Which is what makes it so valuable. It’s like observing the bebop universe just before the Big Bang.
Interesting point. What would you think is one of the best bebop solos to learn if we only had to learn one? I am trying to find some to really help with grasping the language. Every time I hear another solo, I get distracted.
For folks overwhelmed by the quality of this solo, listen to Bird's outtakes as well. You can often see him at the earlier stages of putting things together. Not everything he touche3d turned to gold. Encouraging for the rest of us.
I noticed about 20 years ago, his early years solos reflect the PREZ influence openly.What a musical mind he had to take Lester and Run with him.Genius!!
Do you read Bass Clef as well? In that case you can more or less read the sheet as if it were written in Bass Clef. Of course you still need to watch out for some flats and sharps but you will hear that when practicing. Also you still need to transpose the changes to the key of Bb.

What would be the most beneficial way of learning this? Should one first learn how to play each bit completely right before beginning to dissect it in terms of what's being played over each movement/bar?
Can be both, the order doesn't matter that much I think. I usually kind of "auto-analyse" while still transcribing and proffreading, so before I'd practice the music with the instrument. But The other way around is also perfectly fine :)
Not sure, but as someone who has intentionally avoided Charlie Parker interviews etc (there are a few out there I believe) I was very surprised to find out he was such a neurotic person, and if the film was correct that he had some kind of personality/mental disorder.
Bird was eminent for sure , but it should never be forgotten that he was a kind of Earl Bostic pupil - like Coltrane was ! Besides Boistic was the father to Rock-Jazz and even Classical Music-Jazz e.g. List`s Liebestraum. Der Gute Franz Would has smiled broadly Listening to that, I guess
Hi Eric, I see why you'd think that, because in real time it sounds like a pretty big skip. But let me share the way I perceived it. If you put it through any slowing down software (I use Transcribe!, but also TH-cam will do or many other options), the actuall pitch you hear is a low G natural there. But as it sounds a bit ghosted/muted by half tonguing, what happens when you do that with a note, it goes quite sharp. So I perceived the G natural as a ghosted F#, which got high due to half tonguing in the end. However, if you're still not agreeing with that, no problem at all! I find it great that you are actually listening active and with some scepticism. 😀
@@SharpElevenMusic Actually, the note would be a D# because that’s the melody note for Sailor’s Hornpipe. I don’t think Bird would go for the quote if he didn’t know it, so I believe the intent is more important on this case.

Pure musical idea? I think that this solo is absolutely beautiful but learning not just Bird but also maybe Grant Green or anyone else’s input to jazz you like’s solos or music. If you only play like Bird then can you have your own style?

Is this transcription available forndowoad somewhere? This is easily the best one out there. Adding in the HT's (half tongues) and the notation of the overtone fingerings he uses. Nobody else ever does that and it's those fine details that really make a huge difference in things being clean and accurately translated Bravo!

Don't know anything about a "carousel-lick" ... Legend has it that Bird showed Jay McShawn's Sax Section how to play a background on Cherokee's dreaded bridge by simply playing: Tea for Two. And that makes perfectly sense to me.
Yeah some fantastic ideas in that lot any parker solo is great but this is terrific. I had the Omnibook as a young electric bass player and still remember the ones I learnt plus many great heads as well. Listen to the rhythm guitar! He's also changing the chord there so it must be something that's apart of their arrangement.

Just learn it as written and then move it up three frets. That’s how I learned all my Omnibook stuff.
