This is the material that got me cancelled | Stand Up Comedy

  • I recently performed in an online fundraiser. This organization has booked me a number of times over the past few years. I have a nice relationship with the group’s director and each of the events have been successful-that’s why they kept bringing me back.
This most recent show, though, will be my last. They’ve told me they no longer need my services because there was a complaint about some of the language in this particular bit. Please watch the two-and-a-half-minute clip and let me know what you think.
The director of the organization was apologetic and said that the complaint was from a “younger and more sensitive” member of their team. But his team demanded that I not get booked again, and he had to abide.
It was a last-minute booking and I didn’t have time to vet my material with the group, which is what I do with corporate events these days. Ultimately, the words that come out of my mouth are my responsibility, and I accept that. Comedy is subjective and someone doesn’t need to look hard to find something offensive-especially at a work event, where expectations are different than, say, a comedy show.
In retrospect, what I disagree with is the “punishment,” which I don’t think fits the “crime.” Instead of being asked not to return-or cancelled, or 86ed, or whatever you want to call it-I think a conversation would’ve been much more productive. They could explain what they found offensive and I could learn from the experience. Win-win.
Being asked not to return doesn’t enlighten anyone and feeds into the cancel culture that we’re seeing throughout the comedy business.
Comedy has become much more mainstream in the last 15 years or so, and with the advent of TH-cam and smart phones, it’s much easier to access, which has changed the dynamic between comedy and the public. Previously, you had to seek out live comedy-many cities had only one venue-and make your way there, buy a ticket and a few drinks, wait for the show to start. You were invested in the show in many ways.
Now, you can pull a screen out of your pocket and watch a clip of anyone-and decide whether to thumbs-up them or cancel them. There is no investment of time or interest or money. And if a “younger and more sensitive” person is searching for something to be offended at-instead of being entertained by-they will surely find it. (For the record, the most recent complaints I’ve heard are from “younger, more sensitive” viewers who take offense at very specific words.)
If the rules of society (and comedy) have changed, I think we should have an open discussion about it, not a closed door. I’m tired of getting the plug pulled on me. These are some of the questions I would ask:
Who determines what the new “rules” of comedy are? The most vulnerable members of society, who may be triggered by certain words or ideas? Comedians, or other experts in the comedy industry? Or do we leave it to the HR department? Who decides?
I'm curious to hear how people respond to this.

I am truly sorry this happened to you. And to your audience as well because the (no doubt well-meaning) "sensitive" team member has taken away the chance for future audiences to enjoy your special wit - and insights - in a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by others enjoying themselves.
It is a shame that the team member has missed out on an opportunity to teach / learn about a viewpoint differing from their own.
I wonder if they didn't understand that the folk you were parodying - castgating really - about building a wall were the people who *NEED* to build a wall & they wouldn't be calling their Evil Incarnate "Metricans!"
Beau of the Fifth Column has a t-shirt: "Never get so woke you forget how to dream."
Never get so sensitive you can't see something harmless as being as funny as it's intended to be.
Of course if you have to explain the humor, they would never understand it.
But i've been thinking as i'm typing this. Maybe the issue ISN'T that they didn't understand the folk being poorly reflected here are those wanting a wall, not those they want walled out... Maybe they didn't like the image of *_themselves_* in the mirror you held up. In which case, i think your non-profit might want to vet their team a little differently.
ANYWAY. I'm sorry this happened. I think the non-profit will figure out that they'll have regrets, as well.
I am glad, however, that we Team RobertMacof RobertMac.Com have you on TH-cam.

You convey intelligent humor through a dumbed down character. My guess is that quite a few people take the character literally and don't see the satire. Then there's always the chance that those who don't believe in the underlying issues won't appreciate you exposing the irony. Either way, you're right in that a conversation about what was triggering is preferred, even if it doesn't end up getting anywhere. Hopefully the incident doesn't make a huge impact and you all can move on to bigger and better things.

Robert, this is some of your funniest material. It is a sad day when somebody's hyperactive sensitivities means everyone is suppose to suffer with them. Instead of fixing themselves they expect the world to accommodate all their feelings. I know at a corporate event the audience does not necessarily have a choice to be there or not but really, this passive aggressive self-empowerment will choke the world senseless. You are extremely funny and I hope the humourless, vocal minority will not hinder your refreshing style.

Jerry Seinfeld once said that comedy like this "is like dancing through a room full of laserbeams. At the end people are like wow, look at that, he didn't touch a single laser beam." The problem is, some people get upset when you're even in the room with the laser beams, they don't care about how agile and dexterous and well prepared you are.

I work near DC, but I live a little further out (on the other side of a mountain). I did have a learning curve when I first started my job, because I grew up in a culture that didn’t care about not offending certain groups of people.

Maybe you have already communicated this to director of the nonprofit. I kinda suspect that he may be pinning this on the "younger and more sensitive" person and is taking the path of least resistance. Easier to acquiesce to a squeaky wheel and cut ties with one comic than to engage the effort of dialogue.

the younger crowd is soft and overly sensitive. This is the tamest thing i have ever heard for someone to be cancelled. Your comedy is gold. Don't change a thing to cater to these idiots, there is no pleasing them, no matter how much you sensor, they will always find more. It's because they are so whitewashed and lack creativity, so they attack anyone that has any creativity at all. Look at what gets popular on tik tok, people lip syncing and copying what others do, they are bland.

Those who cancel will eventually be canceled. The difference between you and them, is that you are confident you are innocent and can process the experience from that perspective and will be stronger for the experience. But when they get canceled, they will realize they've been expecting it as consequence for their actions, and will not be able to escape the fundamental idea that they actually deserve it. That's an order of magnitude more work to process and requires a complete strip down of their identity. So you're getting off easy comparatively. Have faith in karma.

If its the "Metricans" part of the routine that's caused the so-called offence, then it would seem the person has likely misinterpreted the target of the humour. I think you've summed up a lot of the current cancel culture issues with your comments about investment, and the lack thereof. I see it in the publishing world as well. While it's wonderful on the creating side of things to have ready access to a much bigger slice of the humanity pie, that of course can lead to issues such as these. I thought Bill Burr also covered it well when he said (and I'm paraphrasing from memory) that people are happy to laugh along and take it all as jokes, until it gets around to THEM. And then suddenly, the comedian is "making statements" rather than telling jokes.

Poking fun at the issue is “offensive” because it’s not obvious enough if you’re “one of us or one of them”. The quality of the comedy matters less than two the butt of the joke is. I can't find any grounds for offense here. I was able to come up with three possibilities, none of them really defensible.
    1. The already mentioned Metricans.
    2. Speaking non-worshipfully about the current gasbag-in-chief. The previous holder of that office would probably have been an acceptable target. It is not permitted to recognize that they are all members of the same club.
    3. Maybe that person extrapolated the very deep implication of "Am I right, ladies?" : 6" becomes 15 cm or 150 mm.
