Rowan has incredible flexibility with his Rubbery body, and facial expressions, ADD that incredible vocal range, he's got the lot. He should never neglect them. I can never forget the horror of the meal I had in Antwerp. It was all mashed potatoes mixed with pureed carrots and a fat, sweaty sausage on the side that had burst open during cooking. There was a small, living, complimentary beetle in the salad. No amount of Stella Artois could erase that memory.
Actually, he did do Inspector Maigret - not playing it for laughs in any way. And not with a French accent either, sadly... The episodes are set in 1950s France, and although those stories were NOT written in a particularly sophisticated way, the BBC series is stunningly atmospheric, and much to be recommended.
