@@SchizophrenixTheGaul3478 anything extreme is bound to have fringes, but generally, when a fandom really takes off (undertale for example) the parts that make it annoying and insufferable are usually the ones that hop on the trend and go absolutely bonkers. They make it their whole LIFE, and crusade against people who disagree with them.
At this point, ignoring a fan base makes the thing you like better because you don’t feel shame in liking it. SCP is a good example. Once SCP got super popular, it lured a lot of people who kinda ruined SCP for some people.
Oh yeah definitely, when I start to like something I give a quick look to the fandom to see if I could maybe interact a bit with them if they are cool (like STALKER players, they are amazing) or completely avoid them and never admit to liking said thing because it's embarrassing (like Undertale fans)

I remember when Twitter was begging for a gay MHA character. Imagine how much of a meltdown they had when a mistranslation caused people to believe that Mineta was gay. They were crying and basically kicking him out of the commiunity.
Steven universe and MHA are pretty good examples of how toxic fandom can ruin the enjoyment of a show sometimes. Same thing for my little pony and this coming from someone who grew up watching care bears.
Also both JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Yakuza. Hope you like the same overdone jokes over and over again while everyone looks at you weirdly when you complain.

in the recent past (10 to 20 years ago) the race, gender and sexual orientation of a character in media didn't really matter. But the moment some people who craved attention and wanted to ``push for more acceptane of races and sexual identification´´ started overanalyzing EVRYTHING deeming something racist or sexist or homophobic or something ended in -ist or -phobic by looking at the situation only taking in mind said things they wanted to push for. This shit is why I left the Hazbin Hotel community a few years back. When Addict released, you had the normal fans thinking the song was good and what not. But, of course, there were absolutely unhinged mfs who hated this one character, Valentino, for being a sexual abuser. That may have been the idea, but I and many others were harassed bc we had a liking of the character (granted at the time we knew nothing of him). Keep in mind the entire concept of Hazbin takes place in hell and these same mfs would be head over heels for Alastor, a cannibalistic serial killer.
Well that’s because a cannibalistic serial killer is cool and a sexual abuser is a shitty person. I think people who have personal experiences similar to that might feel like the character hits too close to home
@@MustacheDLuffy I’d like an explanation as to how a cannibalistic serial killer is “cool”. I can somewhat understand if you just find Alastor entertaining, but we shouldn’t be playing favorites in a show where EVERYONE has sinned greatly and committed unspeakable crimes

Some people in fandoms are horrible, especially the rabid shippers (why are so many girls creepy towards gay guys, it's weird), ones who reinforce their head canons on everyone ("coded" is an annoying word for "stereotype," not sorry), and people who bully the creators and helpers on the project. I just enjoy things by myself or with a sane friend in real life so nothing gets tainted anymore. It doesn't exist if I don't seek it!
coded isnt stereotype, it means that a character displays attributes of the race its coded towards. garnet for instance has big lips, afro, and is voiced by a black voice actor (which doesnt mean much but when looking at coding then it kinda does)
The miguel racist joke is an example of people taking a joke and running with it in the wrong ways. The MHA fandom can't seem to understand it's a show about fighting and superheroes.
The problem with letting people beat others up for acting weird is that one: you’re going to get people who just attack anyone they don’t like; and two: someone is eventually going to get beat to death. I mean, there’s already been an incident where someone did a chlorine gas attack on a fur convention.
Would you be surprise that there is a Christian Furry Fellowship. So yeah I read a lot of Bible after that specifically Romans 1:23 in Latin Vulgate edition.
Shipping characters in general has always been a little odd to me,mainly when fandoms take 2 characters that have displayed no sexual attraction to each other and are the same sex then making it there entire life,I’m bi and I can say with confidence that the amount of people who ship 2 straight characters as gay is weird because ultimately LGBT relationships are around 1% of the population so it feels like they just want some nutting material rather than actually imagining something that’s real or likely. They also often aren’t particularly interest in any other characters in the story either so it just seems like there making up there own personal p°rn imo
Bonus points if said characters hate each other but the shippers chalk it up as “old married couple dynamics.” My brother in Christ, they want to kill each other.

About the people claiming their headcannon is a fact(which I kind of fell victim to at one point, but thankfully realised the error of my ways right afterwards, myself)… There’s a Walt Disney Confessions Rage post on Tumblr, that claims Judy Hopps from Zootopia automatically MUST be East Asian, just because she faced discrimination for being “small and cute”, the “bunnies are good at multiplying” line being an interpretation for the “Asians are good at math” stereotype(their words, not mine), and etc. (like being bad at driving and having over-bearing parents) Now, since the person who wrote that, said that they’re the same ethnicity, they claim Judy must be, and might have faced discrimination and been in similar situations(which I don’t condone whatsoever, mind you), and could therefore relate to the character, that’s totally valid! But I just…self-projection and “character-coding” like this, just rubs me the wrong way for some reason, especially when the character both isn’t human nor confirmed to be coded as ANY RACE by the creator, like Judy and every other character in the movie. (then again, I’m white, so I’m probably gonna get cancelled for saying this lol) Also, while I don’t encourage harassment, the self-projector also wrote “latinx” instead of “latinos” in that post, which is considered quite offensive to Latinos(from what I’ve heard, since I can’t speak for them)😬 Anyway, sorry for the long comment, just wanted to share what came to mind, when you mentioned the topic at hand :)
yeaaa the latinx this is definitely weird. but projecting, especially onto a fictional thing, isn’t as weird imo. they related to some stuff in the movie (the multiplying line doesn’t actually seem math related though, definitely seems like a joke about rabbit reproductive rates) and expressed that. for example, i think Jake the dog is black. i just relate to certain things about him and he seems black to me. now saying that jake is canonically black isn’t correct, he’s a dog. but yk. its just a headcanon.
@@wolfhaley6900 Yeah, I can get behind that and despite the “latinx” line, they technically didn’t mean any harm. Perhaps it’s just my autistic mind reading too much into it, considered the post is called “Judy Hopps is East Asian” and took it literally, when I saw things differently :) I also felt like they(and another person who headcannons her being EA)treated their headcannon as a fact, which kind of ticked me off.
Latinos normally don't find stuff offensive, we use supposed "slurs" invented by actual racist people and turn them into everyday vocabulary because we don't really care. The thing with latinx is that it's really silly and no one here takes it seriously, and it gets annoying when I see some 15 year old girl American girl claiming that this is the right way to talk but offensive seems a bit too strong of a word (I am Venezuelan just in case, no quiero que vengan a joder con que soy racista o una vaina asi)

I kinda have mixed feelings on the takes in the video and comments here. While there's a point where I agree with this, especially with the cases of My Hero Academia's death threats, and people finding things to dislike about genuine art because of politics that never existed in it to begin with, I feel like it's also kind of hypocritical to point fingers at other people for ruining our "normal" way of enjoying things. The only reason we get to enjoy things in a "normal" way is because we're fortunate enough to be wired like the social majority. However, I also know the other side of things, as when I first got into anime I liked showing it openly through my clothing choices, and merch I displayed on things like my backpack at school. I didn't wear wigs to school or naruto run all over the place, but I liked carrying around things related to an interest I was passionate about. For even that minimal amount of self-expression, I got plenty of people staring at me like I was weird, and some people just verbally harassing me about it. I didn't take it lying down, and often pointed out to the more outspoken ones how hypocritical it was for them to wear a sports jersey with some random dude's name on it because they liked sports, only to turn around and make fun of me for wearing an anime shirt. The only reason they weren't made fun of was just because they happened to be on the more socially acceptable side. In the end, many people in the LGBT community have all of these headcanons about characters and ships because they genuinely enjoy the same things that everyone else does, but lack the representation in media that we might take for granted. I'm a straight white male, the definition of the type of person people who are chronically online love to hate, and while that's made me resentful towards people like that in the past, having a gay and trans little brother who just genuinely wants to relate to the cool characters on screen helps me see that they're not all that malicious. Most of them just face a world where they are not the norm, and that can be pretty terrifying and depressing for some. I think some effort from both sides to understand where others are coming from could do a lot to reduce this friction between people who happen to enjoy the same media in different ways. Death threats are never ok, of course, and gatekeeping does more harm than good 100% of the time. But if you've never made an effort to understand why someone might be wearing a fursuit in public, when it's undoubtedly something that would make me want to throw up from anxiety and embarrassment, then you might be ridding yourself of the opportunity to see oa whole new perspective on things. Sorry about the TED talk. TL;DR - I have mixed feelings as someone who has enjoyed anime for a long time (and faced some bullying for it) and has a trans little brother, as I understand that a lot of things (like death threats and gatekeeping) are negative for everybody, both creator and consumer, but also think that it's hypocritical to criticize other people for enjoying things in their own way when we're only "normal" because we just happen to fall in the more socially acceptable category.
Its not about falling in the socially acceptable category its about silecing annoying new comers that dont know shit, and try to shove their own things (in this case identity politics) into matters that shouldn't even be there in the first place, people dont want to talk about politics all the time boss, and just because you are related to someone that is a minority doesn't mean that this said someone is allowed to come in and do whatever they want with the stuff we love and knew for far longer than him, without fighting back. Its called gatekeeping for a reason
Also im pretty sure we are supposed to treat people equally, and not privileged, so it doesn't and/or shouldn't matter if you are a minority or not anyways

I finally played Undertale years after it came out, because I was finally like, “Okay people say this is good. I should give it a try.” I went in spoiler free somehow and loved it. After finishing the game, I wanted to get into the fandom and I learn how toxic and cringe they are. It’s so annoying because I love the game, but I can’t interact with others who love it and I can’t tell anyone that I love it.
I'm legitimately so glad someone said this. I've thought this about just about everything I've liked. I used to be a fan of two fairly popular bands known as Lemon Demon and Tally Hall, but when I found out the amount of shipping, morbid modifying, and political shit the fan base brought into it, I left and have never looked back. What's worse is when they pander to their fan base, though. I watched as Will Wood (another musician) grew in popularity with the same kind of fans as the former two, and as he pandered to them more and more. Now he's "just another gay musician". It hurts to see their fans tear down something good and pure and replace it with theories, shipping, and whining about how their fucking grandparents don't love them because they wear a buttplug. Don't ask. My point is, I'm glad you said this, and I wish more people knew the crap fans put their subjects through. Fucking leeches.
It’s funny because Will Wood has since not only taken an hiatus from music, but even said that the act he put on didn’t feel authentic looking back. As during that time, fans pushed the idea that he was actually trans so much that he left most social media and doesn’t interact with fans as much anymore. They even went as far as to harass him and send death threats when he said that he wasn’t trans and never was. Honestly don’t blame him for taking a long break or even retiring from music.
I love Tally Hall but I found them late through evil trollface memes, however I avoided all of the shipping and craziness because it’s weird af. Like I just wanna listen to their music and spam Banana Man memes to my friends.
@@theavootar People with unsavory interests see a popular thing, and then they go off and start including their interests in it. Examples include: Shipping, Fanfiction, and a bunch of other things I cannot name at the moment.
I avoid fandoms like the plague. After thinking it’s weird and gross for so long, I started playing Genshin Impact and it’s a great game that doesn’t deserve the hate it gets, but the fandom most certainly does. It has the same problem as anime mostly with the toxic shippers and a small amount of weirdos which get amplified and made out to represent the whole community. One of the worst part is the complainers who will find anything to whine about, like how the game is bad because they lost a 50/50, “the game is bad because it has a lot of dialogue”, “the game is bad because it doesn’t explain things enough”, or getting upset because a character can’t do a morbillion damage and isn’t as powerful as the literal gods in the game. Meanwhile if I point any of this out or think people are being unreasonable I’m called a meatrider and a defender of the game, even though I’m pretty vocal about my problems with the game and it’s community.
I haven’t seen Across the Spider-Verse, but some people being upset about Miguel being racial towards Miles, and saying that Gwen is trans like it’s the truth, IS RIDICULOUS! An example of fandoms ruining popular things is Helluva Boss, since the fans are really hostile towards critics and EVEN SEND DEATH THREATS LIKE WHAT THE FUCK?! (I’m sorry for mentioning a show that no one cares about)
Nahhh these dudes that proclaim a character is trans or gay or whatever because of the color scheme or something are gonna be future english teachers. Looking at it there is kind of a similarity between a show that got ruined by the fandom and a lecture that was lowkey fun but you hated it because of school and the teacher overanalysing it.
the only reason they would think this is if they went in wanting to make them gay or trans from the beginning with no prior knowledge and pin point the most minute details that would back their claim. its not, oh look this person is trans, its i want this person to be trans
@theteadrinker7376 I hate that when a character just happens to have certain colors... Automatically the unhinged fans think the characters are "Gay" or "Trans"...... And come up with dumb theories about it...... god I hate fandoms.....
English teachers have a habit of thinking everything has the pathetic fallacy, a literary device, going on with every single story out there when that's not how it is.
I do feel bad for people who primarily go to places like Twitter or general comment sections to determine if some piece of media is good or not. Though, honestly, I mostly don't really engage with fandoms much, even for the things I like/dislike.
just ignore them they will eat each other alive just to be negative about something, and there will always be a positive part to the community even if it doesn't look like it. 3:34 i wish i was blind
My take on all this is that I think that a lot of these kinds of people feel like they're starved of having characters that relate to their own personal identity. Personally, I am someone who cares less about trying to seek out characters that match my own identity, since it really doesn't matter to me. Something I wish more people tried to seek out for is characters/stories that aren't that relatable but share feelings/emotions that most people should be able to feel or get a grasp of understanding (even if it takes time) regardless of where you're from and or who you choose to be. I think generally speaking I just get annoyed by people trying to pretend that they understand what others feel like by pandering to specific people or to their own interests. Shitty corporations and shitty fandoms both share that trait.
Is this perhaps why spongebob is appreciated becuase of the characters and messages not becuase a fandom makes it famous or the fanbase isnt as hands on towards the creators?? Someone fundamental to the piece of art that doesnt attract that kind of person, despite it being one of the most popular beloved cartoons of all time? People relate to spongebob and squidward and stuff, but I just believe they do not come off as disgustingly determined to prove and flaunt their trauma or identity through the characters as you say people in these fandoms do and despite being so popular I'd never describe spongebob as being so defined by "fandom" antics as much as speculation or introspection and memes. Or am I actually all muddled on this. I'd like to hear what you have to say ig. This sounds like I'm just saying random stuff but I think theres something very specific in a show or book etc that determines the frequency of that kind of fan. I know its not either this or that and nothing is perfect.
Tldr the best way to understand what I'm saying is that fans generally won't say "I am in the spongebob fandom lol" but just: "I like Spongebob" "fandom" may technically apply to it, but it's just weird when you refer to it as a fandom in comparison to the average anime. It's just me being over-😊observant
I just love how the fanbase can just ship two obviously straight characters but get mad when you ship a gay character with the opposite sex. The hypocrisy is real
Honestly when you like something, the fans just get you to drink beer to the point where you just don’t care anymore. (I’m 17 and I’ve experienced this.)
Hardcore fans gatekeep because of these tourists/activists that are terminally online albeit on tumblr/twitter/reddit Some of which never actually watched the show but pretended to have seen it Not all of us are NEETs whom dont try and work or run a business but yes the nature of the hobby is weird Hence, thats why they gatekeep New people always want to rewrite history or change things (for the worse) beyond recognition, and mind you this doesnt just happen w entertainment/hobbies but with almost all forms of industry
This but with MHA. I enjoy the anime and the characters and am even making a costume but I don’t consider myself part of the fandom because I really don’t want to be associated with the people who take it too far… I just enjoy an anime, I hate when fanbases ruin it for me
An annoying thing I didnt see mentioned so far is the way youll see people join a fandom with a pfp and name and bio that directly come from the media and lots of retweets/reblogs/etc of said media and with seemingly no intention to stop consuming it anytime soon, who will be complaining about the content in the media beyond just minor issues that youd think would be dealbreakers. I was in MHA and Warrior Cats fandom circles and I consistently see people say the authors are misogynistic and in Warrior's case ableist, youd think that would be a good reasom to stop reading if it was a bad reflection of the author AND appeared in the content so much. Or the deal with people complaining about Berserk having traumatizing scenes and saying its just "🍇 fetish prn" but contuining to talk about it, or other series with bad guys doing other equally bad things being seen as "obviously the author condones this because they wrote a bad guy doing it". But they still post about the content. I never played Skullgirls or even knew much beyond the name, but I havent gone a day without seeing a post that says something along the lines of "ive been a longtime fan im glad they finally got rid of the csem" but..if you say it had that kind of content in it, why are you a longtime fan and enjoying it, knowingly consuming that? South Park is another good example but I think theres another angle to that one, a lot of the new fans who are building basically a new fandom have gotten a lot of critism for defending Cartman's actions or shipping the kids in "the anime boy kissing artstyle", but also Ive met a few who admitted they only knew what was posted on TikTok (which has plenty content filters, yet not enough apparently) and were surprised when they turn on a full episode and the kids say slurs or Cartman is more than "a little mena to Kyle", or making jokes about child 🍇, all just casually thrown in. Theyre kinda being spoonfed the ""appropriate edgy"" stuff and probably many in denial of the actual show in favor of fan content (which is fine if you acknowledge its all fan content and not canon...). I know theres some things you can say "yeah thats messed up dont like that", believe me Im a Made in Abyss fan (not in fandom idk what theyre like), but sometimes it feels like people join just to say "this is objectively bad" while continuing to share fanart.
Nothing like having my fav chars being ultrafeminized and "transified" by fans who have no godamn respect for lore. In my case, the fanbase actually has a hold on the canon because the writers are starting to shoehorn fanfic-level bs from the fans into the actual game. It makes me so upset because I know that if the writers had any respect for the media they write for, they would not do this. They would keep the characters in-character.
Yeah lol, RWBY was ruined in the same way. Aside from the sheer degeneracy of the fandom and the artists in it which has been a problem since forever, RWBY’s also infamous for the fans basically forcing a useless lesbian relationship in the show when it didn’t even need it, and anyone who criticized it was homophobic. Deltarune fans also did the cringe “Noelle trAns!!1!” thing as well (never mind Ultrakill and Pizza Tower), but that’s for a problem on a bigger scale of fandoms being mostly extremely leftist nowadays. Basically everything gets ruined by people shoehorning their own political agenda in and forcing you to accept them (or their head cannons) and you can’t do anything about it unless your x-phobic.
Insecurity, Self Confidence Issues, Self Image Issues and Trust Issues? Sounds to me more like Skill Issues tbh. But jokes aside i agree. Some people in fandoms are horrible, especially the rabid shippers (why are so many girls creepy towards gay guys, it's weird), ones who reinforce their head canons on everyone ("coded" is an annoying word for "stereotype," not sorry), and people who bully the creators and helpers on the project. Fr i don’t know why a specific type of women drool over making two male characters gay for each other I find it so cringe
coded isnt stereotype, it means that a character displays attributes of the race its coded towards. garnet for instance has big lips, afro, and is voiced by a black voice actor (which doesnt mean much but when looking at coding then it kinda does)

They also often aren’t particularly interest in any other characters in the story either so it just seems like there making up there own personal p°rn imo
That's the point bro, sometimes people just want to imagine a head cannon with some characters they like. It's only weird when done with real people.
Bonus points if said characters hate each other but the shippers chalk it up as “old married couple dynamics.” My brother in Christ, they want to kill each other.
The tiny amount of people i knew like this, it was nutting material for them, mostly girls

About the people claiming their headcannon is a fact(which I kind of fell victim to at one point, but thankfully realised the error of my ways right afterwards, myself)…
There’s a Walt Disney Confessions Rage post on Tumblr, that claims Judy Hopps from Zootopia automatically MUST be East Asian, just because she faced discrimination for being “small and cute”, the “bunnies are good at multiplying” line being an interpretation for the “Asians are good at math” stereotype(their words, not mine), and etc.
(like being bad at driving and having over-bearing parents)
Now, since the person who wrote that, said that they’re the same ethnicity, they claim Judy must be, and might have faced discrimination and been in similar situations(which I don’t condone whatsoever, mind you), and could therefore relate to the character, that’s totally valid!
But I just…self-projection and “character-coding” like this, just rubs me the wrong way for some reason, especially when the character both isn’t human nor confirmed to be coded as ANY RACE by the creator, like Judy and every other character in the movie.
(then again, I’m white, so I’m probably gonna get cancelled for saying this lol)
Also, while I don’t encourage harassment, the self-projector also wrote “latinx” instead of “latinos” in that post, which is considered quite offensive to Latinos(from what I’ve heard, since I can’t speak for them)😬
Anyway, sorry for the long comment, just wanted to share what came to mind, when you mentioned the topic at hand :)
yeaaa the latinx this is definitely weird. but projecting, especially onto a fictional thing, isn’t as weird imo. they related to some stuff in the movie (the multiplying line doesn’t actually seem math related though, definitely seems like a joke about rabbit reproductive rates) and expressed that. for example, i think Jake the dog is black. i just relate to certain things about him and he seems black to me. now saying that jake is canonically black isn’t correct, he’s a dog. but yk. its just a headcanon.
@@wolfhaley6900
Yeah, I can get behind that and despite the “latinx” line, they technically didn’t mean any harm. Perhaps it’s just my autistic mind reading too much into it, considered the post is called “Judy Hopps is East Asian” and took it literally, when I saw things differently :)
I also felt like they(and another person who headcannons her being EA)treated their headcannon as a fact, which kind of ticked me off.
@@DanishDandere yeah thats the only thing i have an issue with, treating a headcanon like its fact. glad we could agree tho!! :3

It’s so annoying because I love the game, but I can’t interact with others who love it and I can’t tell anyone that I love it.
Fr cause they think we are like the other side (that is 10% of our community compared to all of undertale fans) and assume its all of us
I'm legitimately so glad someone said this.
Holy shit man, I fucking agree. Part of both fandoms before all that degenerate shit started to pop up.
Why do you think that happens? I'm really curious on how this so called "fandom leeches" as he said just appear suddenly@@narf-narf

A lot of issues disappear when you just get off social media and enjoy content without interacting with large groups of online people

Rick and morty copypasta wil forever be a certified hood classic.

The way I feel about these kinds of people can only be summed up by the very “you don’t belong here” quote that started off this video.
7:20 that came from the heart
