I travel to Algonquin park for a 3 night solo canoe camping trip.
Day one took me from my put in point at access #4 Rain lake, all the way to Misty Lake.

OK, enough have jabbed you about the 1200km pore-tahj, so I'll leave those alone LOL!. Seriously, though, I know that you really enjoy your trips out with your buddies. I think we all enjoy trips out like that! But as for me, I'd rather watch your solo videos. You spend most of your time talking to me/us, about your life or your thoughts or whatever skill you happen to be generating. And that's the reason I watch.

Been bombing through your videos for a few months now.. think I've seen most of them. I'm really impressed with your shot setup(s).. you do an excellent job of allowing us to forget you're doing all the filming, that you're alone out there seeing a shot, setting it up, walking through it, returning for the camera, continuing on. And your editing skills may be more impressive than your already admirable bushcraft skills! Thanks, as ever, for sharing this all with us.

Man, Joe is a beast to do a 1200+km portage! LOL! Easy slip up Joe, I've done it myself. I love the hard work you do. I do the same with camera setups when I'm by myself on expeditions.

Hi Joe: good to see that some of what you learned on the previous trip is being used here. After doing them (at a slower pace) I believe solo canoe trips are uniquely satisfying. Brian 76
I have never back packed a day in my life, but will be starting this Spring. Thanks for the inspiration Joe!
You can put some rocks in your boat for ballast, to aid in moving up or down river or into or with the wind. Only caveat is you have to carry them on the portage trail!
other than winter camping, portaging is another thing on my to-do-eventually list. Algonquin is where it's at.

Love the video and your journey is through magnificent country with plenty to see and enjoy. That axe is sure sharp and makes for creating great fire sticks and feathers. Looking forward to watching the other 2 videos to complete the trip. Shame about the pants, but I guess that it's one of the hazards of sitting near fires from time to time. Did the North and West side with my then wife. Eleven days of bliss. I recall my pack was 65 pounds...our canoe a special lightweight aluminum 34 pounds plus paddles and fishing gear (no fish) my ladies pack was 35 pounds. I carried my pack and canoe she her pack and life jackets. Humped through those portages. Great trip too much gear but was packed tight in 2 waterproof bag they got lighter as food diminished. Excellent trip. Best
Man I love Misty Lake, it is where I have been able to take all my moose pics. The fishing isn't the greatest but the wild life around that lake is amazing. Cheers, John

If your ever looking for a rest stop ,we are in Barrie in a 5 bedroom house(Lots of space). You are more than welcome to stay and recharge your batteries on your way north. Keep on trekking. Something I have always meant to try when paddling in the wind is take a bag that will seal and fill it with lake water and put i t up front for added ballast. Dump it when you dont need it anymore and roll up the bag for packing. Thanks for the videos!

The West side of the Park is a nice choice. It's certainly less busy than the central part. Although timing matters, and mid- to late June is a great time to be in Algonquin. Starting shortly, things get busy with youth camp canoe trips for a good eight weeks. Admittedly, I used to be part of that busy-ness ... but that's where I discovered how much I love canoe tripping.

I used to carry a Buck 119 on canoe trips, but not on my belt (it lived in the wannigan). Its primary duty was food preparation, which was pretty silly insofar as it is not a particularly good kitchen knife. I think I generally agree that, in the normal course of events, a belt knife might be overkill. I guess the strongest argument for having one is the 'what if I lose my gear' type scenario ... and then you have to rely on whatever you have on your person. If you feel you could get by with the SAK, I guess that would do it.
A different, but related, issue is whether or not your pack will float (when fully loaded ... so, at the beginning of the trip, with all the food weight). Unfortunately, there is only one way to find out.

I"ve always wanted to see a Moose, lucky you!! I have a Gränsfors Bruks small splitting axe and cut up an entire huge oak tree, awesome axes, I'll never buy anything else.
Like the canoe and that personal touch you put on it (scout).
You have a good plan on resting, refueling, and thinking things out as you go. I have to say that your videography is stupendous these days, Joe... really loving it. (especially the under boat portaging video). The moose(es) was a great bonus. A leech in the boat is better than a leech in your crotch... that's what I always say! Ahhh Algonquin paddle it many times and got to see so many interesting things. Great video but I have a couple of questions/observations - no spare paddle? no PFD? no bailing bucket? Perhaps just didn't show up in the video.

You are a natural videographer / storyteller. I appreciates hearing your thoughts about blade carry, and the multi use capabilities of your Granfors hatchet. I am also looking forward to your thoughts about your Swift Pack boat, as the thought of kneeling while paddling - in traditional canoes - is NOT appealing to me at all, as I know my legs would go numb.

1200-1300km portage! That would be Algonquin park to the Manitoba border. Good thing it's a light canoe.
Using the map on the PaddlePlanner website while watching these videos really helps to give a person a sense of where you are.
Taking the videos to the next level..!! Breaking the epic trips into multi part instalments is a good way to go when you have so much footage and great content. You could have broken down your last epic trip with Kyle into a multi part as well and had us hungry for the next instalment. I would rather watch these real life adventures you have over the majority of the big budget rubbish on TV. I really like your channel, i can Surreptitiously (google that word, i did...) escape to the wilderness between my own adventures and i have to work and pay the bills.
