- Beloved actor Matthew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom Friends, passed away recently at the age of 54. While there were no drugs found at the scene and no signs of foul play, the question remains: what caused his untimely death?
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a renowned cardiologist and heart specialist, speaks to TalkTV's Maddie Hale to shed light on the likely cause and the long-term damage of addiction.
According to Dr. Gupta, the most common cause of death in middle-aged men is sudden heart attacks. This is especially true for those who have no warning signs or pre-existing conditions. Unfortunately, Matthew Perry's battle with addiction and his unhealthy lifestyle may have contributed to his heart-related issues. Chronic inflammation, a consequence of addiction and other factors such as stress, weight problems, and poor diet, can lead to heart disease.
Matthew Perry's history of alcoholism since the age of 14 certainly took a toll on his body. Dr. Gupta explains that addiction, especially when it involves a stop-and-start approach to drug use, can be highly inflammatory and damaging to the heart. The heart is forced to work harder while also facing the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. It's like having one foot on the brake and pressing the accelerator on a car engine, causing irreparable harm.

Drugs and alcohol literally destroy your body - muscles, bones, brain cells. My sister was an alcoholic and substance abuser. She was an athlete who could no longer run due to the deterioration of her bones and she died at 56 of a heart attack. This is what I surmise happened to the wonderful Matthew Perry.

He was an unwell man physically, after many many years of addiction...
While this is so sudden and very sad, it isnt a tragedy....

Hes was fortunate he didnt survive a lingering event such as a stroke, aneurism or post arrest syndrome....
Dying suddenly was a blessing...and im not saying this flippantly...
A lingering death would have robbed his dignity

Read Matthew's book. Then come back and tell us his sad self described love of using drugs did not take his life. You didn't hear a word he said.
He died peacefully, in his large mansion, sitting in a warm jacuzzi. Everything was right in his life. He had finished his autobiography, he helped so many people, he did all the charity, he did not have to witness anyone in his close circle die before him.... All in all he had a merciful death. I am sure he was fully satisfied when he passed. Somewhere in the afterlife he must be smiling contently.

I know. Everybody so "shocked," as if he was in his prime. He was 54. Not everybody gets to live as long as the Queen. Our bodies start to deteriorate in our 50s. If we don't make extra efforts, we can't expect to live to 90. And living over half a century is a pretty decent amount of time.

He suffered a burst colon aged 49 due to chronic opiate addiction...you just cannot walk away intact from those injuries. The most poignant thing he said was how within 8months into the Friends superstardom (something he wanted all his life), he realised it didn't mean much...admire his honesty.
Pickleball is strenuous for the healthy as I've played it as kid growing up; many healthy people have had injuries and strokes from pickleball. One man in the news recently who has three small children jerked his neck while playing and was in a coma for three days. They were hopeful he would be well. With his damaged internals, Matthew should not have been playing pickleball and 4 to 5 times a week it was said, it was too much for his damaged body. Walking. yoga, light hand weights, the Total Gym, workouts gentle on the body is what he should have been doing to slowly build it back up. Not fast paced strenuous, exercise or sport.

If you read his book then you will understand the absolute trauma that Matthew went through mentally and physically. He started his book with the statement that he should be dead and he was speaking the truth. It's a miracle that his body continued for so long after the amount of substance abuse it endured for so many decades. We never truly know someone's struggle but Matthew decided to share his in his book. His pain was indescribable but I hope he can rest now. I'm speechless and so sad for his suffering when he brought so much laughter and light to other people. He reached true enlightenment and self-awareness here and I'm glad of that. He came full circle but I'm also dismayed that his story ended like this. He truly made it his mission to understand his disease and the affliction he was so tortured by.
It saddened me greatly to understand how much he suffered for so many years, by himself.

Another risk that isn’t mentioned much is the heat in a hot tub because if you have heart problems, your supposed to be careful in baths and hot tubs. I lost my mother in law that has heart issues in a hot tub. It was a heart attack

My grandad, who I never met, dropped down dead of a heart attack aged 42 in 1952. He never smoked or drank alcohol, but he was fought in the D Day Landings. My nana always told me he was never the same man when he came home from the war 😥

This Doctor is amazing. He explains everything so well, and, is so patient. Interviewer was on a one-way train to prove something. Dr. Gupta must have been very frustrated. However, one would never know it. He kept on going, and provided a lot of useful info. My hat is off to the very professional and caring Dr. Gupta!

I'm not an alcoholic but my late father was. And it ruined his health and life in general. I am a recovering opioid addict. I've been clean for nearly 3 years now but I was abusing opioids for around 9 years. I didn't need them for any medical condition they just made me feel great...at first. Then after 6 years I realised I had a serious problem with opoiod addiction. I tried and failed many times to get clean but 3 years ago during the first lockdown, I used the time to get clean. So far so good I'm still clean. Addiction of any type is awful and destroys your health, livelihood and your soul. If you're battling addiction and are reading my comment, please know you're not alone. There are many of us who can relate to what you're going through. Please seek help. You deserve to live a happy and healthy life. But you have to make that happen. And with help and support you will. RIP Matthew Perry aka Chandler Bing. Thank you for the memories.
I was a cocaine addict and alcoholic and have been off that for 10years now, I smoked cannabis for a few years and stopped that too, i now take cocodamol and i do abuse it, because it makes me feel better, its like an antidepressant to me, I understand your message and great to hear you’re doing well my friend, peace and love to you

I'm so tired of people who were never prescribed opioids thinking they understand opioids. They grab on so fast, and hold tight. My father recently shocked me by telling me - and he is in terrible, demonstrable physical pain- that the meds he takes? Prescribed 23 years ago! My Dad is 84! I remember before he was 70, we were told he was too old for back surgery. So that must have been a sh**y doctor who peddled oxicontin AND Lortab to my Dad. He's still in pain, he has to pee in a cup once a month, then go get your drugs. If you can get through pain without? DO. These are helpful for some people. No one needs them for having one tooth pulled. It's not worth it, the drugs/meds become your owner.
It’s sad that we live in a world where we take care of our cars more than we take care of our bodies. Our bodies are built like a car and we got to take care of it feeding the right nutrients. It’s the same as when you take your car for a tuneup and change all the fluids and put clean fluids. RIP 🙏
I have an old Cortina car. I polish it and service it and love it. I abuse drink and smoke 40 a day. I am 87 now , and still fit as a young priest in a brothel
I know a lot of people who were addicts who died of heart problems after getting sober. The damage you do during addiction really does stay with you forever and usually kills you earlier.
He went through hell in hospital. He was in a coma for 6 months, 16 surgeries and a temporary colostomy bag. Rip Matthew. Was he still smoking? I know he had stopped drugs and alcohol 3 years ago. He was much more than a celebrity. He was an authentic compassionate man. Loved him.
When his colon exploded, which caused him having to be put on an ECMO machine and pneumonia and going to be in a coma for two weeks, not six months, but he did have to spend five months in the hospital with a colostomy bag for almost a year, even after being released. He had COPD and he started smoking when he was still in elementary school and light up a cigarette the second he came home after being in the hospital for five months. At one treatment center he had to have surgery and his heart stopped and have CPR performed for five minutes breaking several ribs. He had major dental issues as well, his decades of weight fluctuations probably also negatively impacted his body. Who knows what might have been going on that hadn’t been diagnosed yet, maybe what was causing his fatigue on the days leading up to and the day of his death was an indicator of something was wrong, especially after playing an intense game of pickleball. His body went through hell and was on medications like anti depressants, anti anxiety, medication for COPD, and a medication that was supposed to help him stay clean. He was finally clean and sober for a long period of time, doing well, things were looking up for him, and sadly, now he’s gone. I just hope that he’s finally at peace and he continues to love and guide his loved ones from beyond.

I love Matthew Perry. I really don't think he had started using again. The drugs and alcohol for so many years, more than likely took a toll on his body causing premature heart disease. You have to remember he also smoked, and he had to be on Suboxone for the rest of his life too which can put wear and tear on heart and circulatory system. All the years of abuse to the body, probably aged it. Yes, his age was 54, but his body might have been more like a 75 or 80 year old (inside).
Very good point- the suboxone, I mean. He said being on it made him "feel bummed",and it IS brutal on the body. I've read a few excerpts from his memoir,and it just saddens me too much. When he talks about his deep fear of abandonment...my heart literally winces. May he rest in peace❤

The only real surprise to me, having read Matthew's memoir and being the same age, is that his body hung on so long. This is NO WAY is a judgment. I hoped for him, prayed for him, only ever heard good things about him. I can't understand what it's like to enjoy using drugs. I'm not built that way, and we still know so little about addiction. Matthew wrote that he regretted nothing and would do it all again. I do wonder, could the right doctor or therapist seen something like depression underneath?
Then add in doctors writing opiates like candy and it's... just so hard. I hope sincerely that he is at peace. Too many people who give us joy are able to give themselves the same. Many of us have that person in our family. Thank you and peace to you, Matty.

I had an aunt , who smoke and drank all her life . She end up having a throat cancer two years before her passing. She was around 80 . My mom didn’t smoke and never had a drink- or even coffee- she died at 81..

Well said. It is so different with different individuals. My 6'3 brother od'ed on an amount of H he had taken hundreds times before with no problem. Then one day, for some reason, his body must have been in weaker state. He was 22 (I was 23), back in 1999.

As I nurse, I’ve seen many people with substance abuse issues that had severe heart damage. Alcohol and drugs take a toll on the body. If he had a heart arrhythmia that caused unconsciousness, there might not be any evidence on the autopsy.

Severe substance abuse ages a person immensely. It detrimentally takes a toll on the body, inside and out. In his last days, Matthew Perry looked to be in his early 70s. He didn't look 54 years old.

Perry said that if asked, he could help someone else who was struggling with an addiction yet obviously couldn't BE helped. He went to 6000 AA meetings, was in rehab 15 times and detox 65 times, been on life support and had 14 surgeries. He died by slow suicide.

Detoxing 65 times means he was a major repeat offender! His body really suffered! His colon exploded from dehydration from vicodin abuse. If you can't stop after that? You're really a goner. Hot tub or spa probably not a great thing for his blood vessels. 😢

Spoken as someone who has no understanding of the causes of addiction. I agree with nplove3478, he tried very hard to live and not die. The addiction was his attempt to self-medicate for his insecurities, social anxiety, and poor self-esteem; possibly even abuse, mental or physical. Those are the primary reasons people use.
Guessing drugs and booze are the major factors.
And I'm glad the doctor stuck to facts other than speculating. A lot of American "experts" interviewed by media cant wait to give an opinion without knowing the patient or their records.

He is a Cardiologist and his father was a Doctor. Drug deaths are usually associated with damage to the heart.
You can reverse many of the drug related harms if you stop young enough and change your lifestyle. I quit in 2013 and recent health m.o.t revealed my only risks factors today for illness are genetic and unrelated to my past drug use. I was nowhere near the level of severity of addicts like Perry; having little to no money at the time placed restrictions on both my drug and treatment options. But ultimately all addicts, we are the same - we have sensitive personalities that predispose us to trauma, paranoia, self centredness and depression/anxiety. The first time we experiment with alcohol or drugs we are suddenly relieved of these emotional difficulties. It's natural we seek more of the thing that made is feel good. But eventually we cross a line and once crossed we can never drink or take drugs safely again. Our problem is that despite all the evidence we shouldn't, we have a little voice in our head lying to us. The same voice that has all of your pulling up at drive thru or reaching into the junk food cupboard at night. Except the thing we crave destroys our lives and those of the people we love. Plus what causes this pain? Childhood trauma. Longing for love, warmth, acceptance. With highly sensitive and intelligent children this unfulfilled feeling, causes huge damage! Almost impossible to mend.

I had a friend who was an alcoholic for years. He was sober for around 20 years, but still died way too early from liver problems. So sad.
My cousin 55 has been drinking a ton every day since she was 16. Her liver is made of cast iron
I immediately thought his body simply gave out even though he got sober. Two hours of pickleball and then a hot tub? I'm not a Dr. but feel it was heart disease. The abuse and damage was chronic. My husband has been an alcoholic since early childhood and smokes. He quit drinking 6 months ago but still smokes and has COPD. He insists he's in great health. Very active. His Dad died at 54 his Mom at 61. Worried.
It's just a part of life.. sometimes people just know that that's probably what they will die of? or perfer to die of? Nobody wants to die. but I'm probably going to end up with emphysema if I stay at it. just like my grandpa. but I'm 41 and who knows.. some people smoke until their 88 and die from something else? Life don't make much sense really. I just hope it all makes sense in the end when we all get there.

I do know from my 68 years on this planet learning everyday, you can't make anyone change or do anything unless they want to first. We can only change ourselves. My aunt and uncle both died from COPD. They were told to stop smoking after numerous hospital visits but did not. My uncle had an open casket and the grin on his face was not a peaceful face, instead looked like he could not get air in his final monents. It reminded me of a goblin’s grin or something, didn’t look like himself.
Looks like he had a cabinet full of prescription meds so 'sober' is relative.
@GRORGvideot I'm so sorry for your loss. My husband has been smoking since he was a kid! He's 63. Even though he's active and his blood work and tests are great and his last lung x-ray was good, he doesn't get it. He will not do well continuing to smoke. He's on an inhaler but doesn't use it. He's on CPAP but doesn't use that either. My Dad had a major heart attack and stroke at 53. He stopped smoking, lost 40 lbs, stopped drinking beer and ate brown rice, and beans every day and exercised. He had COPD too and oxygen. He almost made it to 90. My Dr. said that's something we can all do. Change our bad habits if we choose to and live but no one can make us do it.

My Father born in 1914 was a London cardiologist, deceased at 70 from heart disease. It is heartbreaking that people are destroying their health with alcohol and drugs. His generation were destroyed by WWII and in his case 5 years on HMS Devonshire mostly in the Atlantic, cigRettes and alcohol was dished out to soothe nerves, and do ,t imagine that this stopped postwar. pTSD ruined our family life and he was on half a bottle of whisky daily when he died. How do we get young people to revere their own health😢

I loved Matthew Perry. I cried when I found out about his passing. Everybody has a story. I read his book and my heart broke for him but, was so glad the he reached out to God for help. I believe that he's with Jesus now.

I believe he may have had a warning. Someone close to him stated that Matthew felt unusually exhausted and fatigued a week or so before his death. This can be a warning of a pending heart attack

I once heard that at the height of his opioid addiction, he was taking 55 pain-killing pills a day. I don't know the dosage, and I don't know if it was percocet or hydrocodone or whatever, but I myself had a 3-year addiction where I was taking 10 or 12 a day. I swear it took something away from me permanently. I cannot imagine trying to take 55 pills a day and trying to stay alive.
I believe it was Vicodin.
Yes plus a massive amount of vodka a day also. I finished reading his book last week and told my daughter I couldn’t see him living much longer, poor fella put so much into his body.

My dads colon ruptured at 50. My sister was diagnosed with diverticulitis in her mid 20’s. My colon ruptured when I was 46 and my brother, who was 1 yr older, ruptured 6 months after I did. My dad’s sister had a colostomy. I lost several older cousins due to colon rupture. One of my sons had a third of his colon removed in his early 40’s. I wasn’t a yo-yo dieter. I wasn’t a dieter. I was at a normal weight. I wasn’t an addict. If fact I had never had a pain pill till my surgeries for my colon rupture and colostomy takedown. Had appendix removed at 50. Not everyone that has this problem has it due to addition problems. I don’t like how the interviewer keeps referencing this. Some of us just have shitty digestive systems.

And the fact that he played a hard game of pickleball just 2 hours before.
His heart was obviously on its last legs... I know a guy who dropped dead in a bar at 38 from a heart attack but he was a heavy drinker and extremely overweight.. Still a sad loss.. RIP Matthew

As much as I agree with the fact that our choices affect our body, I feel that saying "one cannot undo the effects of drugs" does a disservice by removing hope and incentive for one to recover. ❤. Just something to be considerate of.

As a recovering alcoholic and addict the damage I have done to my body is not repairable. Yes I have made it to my seventies but I dont live, I exist. Bones, gut, heart, lungs have need shot since mid fifties. I will miss you Matthew. You were shining a spotlight on a disease that kills not only the person abusing but those around them. jmo
He died just like Leslie Jordan imo. Leslie had been feeling unwell a few weeks before and had an appt to see a cardiologist but never made it. He died suddenly driving to work. Now with Matthew, his Pickleball instructor said he had been feeling very tired for a few weeks and was feeling tired that morning at his lesson. He went home from his lesson and sent his assistant on an errand and he went into his hot tub. If only the chain of events would have happened differently. Perhaps his assistant could have saved him, but she didn't get back until 4pm. Very sad. When God calls, you go. I hope he is at peace now. Beautiful human with a kind heart will be remembered.
I'm not in a health profession, but just common sense tells me sitting in a hot tub for awhile lowers heartbeat, lowers blood pressure. Combine that with the likelihood he was on blood thinners since he had so many surgeries and perhaps on narcotic drugs and even if he had only one alcoholic beverage, my thought is he passed out or fell asleep and yes drowned. I also note the magnificent home and the fact he was alone: money doesn't buy happiness.

He screwed up his own life,he could have stopped the drugs and found a partner got married and had a few kids and enjoyed life.Perhaps because of his addiction, none of the women in his life stuck around.I mean look at Robert Downey JR,he found the right woman and turned his life around and never went back to the drugs.

When I first read the news in the small hours of Sunday mourning (UK time) I was in bed, I Googled "Can you drown by falling asleep in a jacozzi ?" Then I realised from reading further news, medical reports and Dr Sanjay's analysis it was a heart attack or 'cardiac arrest' causing Matthew Perry to drown.
My father died at age 61 of a massive heart attack while sleeping. His mother died suddenly at 55 of heart attack also. My Feeling is that Matthew died quickly and most likely due to heart issue, especally since Matthew said his heart had stopped several years ago and he was given CPR.
Someone wishing to stop an addiction does not live in Hollywood. I would be like a diabetic living in a chocoloate factory.

There are too many doctors in America that just throw pain medication at ppl! (One of the things poor Matthew was addicted to) . I think that needs to change! Soooo sad. x
It has changed a good bit. I recently have been suffering from advanced arthritis in C1 and C 2 and it seems people I ask about chronic pain and what they do, they say they are pretty screwed because Meds are so regulated now.

Matthew hoped that he would be remembered for his efforts to help people struggling with addiction, even more than his role on Friends.
Dr. Gupta is doing an excellent job of describing the complex issues that may have contributed to Matthew's sudden death. He is right - people want answers, often look for the simple explanation, and jump to conclusions.
Let's hope that part of Matthew's legacy will now include a raised awareness and compassionate understanding about these issues.

I am a 76 year old female who has never smoked, hardly ever been a drinker and never used drugs except what my doctors have prescribed. On the other hand I have been a diabetic since I was 58…my maternal grandmother was as well and was the only one we have discovered. I had 7 babies between the ages of 18 and 42, all were C-sections. I have also had two different cancers since 2013…the first a Stage 0 malignant melanoma that was deemed to be non-spreading and non-invasive…thank God….then in 2015 I was diagnosed with uterine cancer and had to have a total hysterectomy. My maternal grandparents died at 70 from a stroke and my Papaw from a cardiac arrest at 72. My paternal grandparents at 84 when she had a cardiac arrest then my Granddad at 86 from uremic poisoning (kidney). My mother died at 58 from lung cancer (a 40 year smoker) and my daddy at 78 from lung cancer after smoking 70 years. I think your best bet is to do the best you can and not smoke, or drink alcohol or do drugs because I did everything I could not to become diabetic and one of the things my cancer doctor told me was….”Your DNA will out and sometimes there is nothing you can do to change it.” So do the best you can with what you can avoid.
I thought the same thing when I heard that he had passed away while in his hot tube . My daughter was born with a heart defect and that was one thing her cardiologist told us was not to allow her to go into a hot tube .

Yes, Matthew obviously damaged his body with a self-destructive lifestyle but are we open to ALL possibilities that may have contributed to his untimely death?
It would also be interesting to explore the idea of why our society sometimes contributes to destroying those who seem to have been gifted with everything to live for.

Also, Great Britain and Australia are investigating a significant rise in the death of young adults during the last couple of years and American insurance companies are reporting an un-precedented increase in insurance claims for young adults who have died suddenly.

My husband died of heart failure, "alcoholic heart failure" as the doctor wrote on his death certificate. The alcohol destroyed the electric system of his heart.

Remember the first few times we saw Matthew looking so downtrodden, overweight, sloppy and he looked depressed? It blew my mind as it did so many I'm sure. It scared me. I wouldn't have been surprised if he had died during that period of his life. I do hope he is at rest. I say this to Matthew as a person, not as a fan of FRIENDS.

The coroner's report says deferred. This is usually done to run tests for drugs and alcohol. It could very well be a heart attack with coronor just being careful to check for anything as is his/her responsibility to do.

My condolences - that's awful! All of the information needs to be on the table and discussed without censorship. There are several renowned cardiologists I know of who have reviewed what's been going on the last few years and are calling for the shots to be taken off the market. They're seeing adverse events in as many as 1 in 800 people.

My husband was 50 years old who passed away on vacation one day before we came home . My husband had AFib never wanted to go the Dr’s he was a physical therapist . He knew the whole body . His job was very stressful went to home to home in here Florida . He was very stressed from traveling to each visit with the traffic in Florida . My husband died a massive MI . I miss him .
So much pain that he had to go through.. also loneliness .. very educational information.. The true reality of having addictions. I never had and never will.
Smoking is probably the worst thing you can do to your body. Especially your heart. This lady just kept harping in drugs and alcohol but he had Copd. He was also in a jacuzzi and they can be dangerous for those with a heart problem. Let him rest in peace. He did so much good, and his most importantly, his legacy will be that of helping those with the same problems.

Before that, I crossed paths w/ him in my area of West Hollywood. Wanted to say hi, but didn’t wanna draw attention to him in Starbucks. It was very busy. Had we gotten to chat, it would’ve been a BLAST!

It is very unfortunate that Matthew finally beat his addition & said he was happy the last year.
He was middle aged & for 40years he was an alcoholic & abused drugs which played havoc with his body.
Smoking & an unhealthy diet could have played a big part in his sudden death.
I did see his interview Diane Sawyer & he didn't look healthy. His family genetics could have played a part too.
I'm just so shocked & moruning his death 😢.
