Yup, they did that to me too. I was quoted something like that for the 1/3 scale Alien Big Chap, and then when it came time to ship, $455. The aftermarket in almost all hobbies are crashing. People would pay the increased prices because they could move the statue, now prices are dropping and the investment based on speculative assets is absolutely gone. For a long time people were buying and selling statues because the aftermarket was hot. Again its almost all hobbies, comics, cards, sneakers etc.

No, that half-measure "stimulus" package isn't to blame. There has not been a relative pay increase since the 1970s in America. You can blame "greed-flation," which was proven to be the cause, due to the deregulation of corporate business and unworthy/overpaid boards and CEOs. More recently, it has been proved that companies used the pandemic to hyper-inflate their products, claiming that material cost increased, but somehow, their profit margins ALSO increased. If it was actually "inflation," their profit margins would have stayed the same. Material cost has risen, but they have gouged every step of the way as they will continue to do since corrupt politicians have allowed America to become a corporate oligarchy. Very simple.

As an artist who's been selling my sculptures at conventions, I had to raise my prices due to the increase of vendor table costs, as well as supply costs for my work. It's no surprise that $1000 statues aren't selling. Not to mention that most statues from Sideshow are artificially scarce with their "limited" runs. They think this justifies raising their prices to ludicrous amounts, but all it's really done is make it easier for people to avoid their products.
I think the statue companies need to start taking some notes from the anime collectable market and mass produce their statues. The lower prices would be a boon.

I would have to save for almost a year to justify buying him thanks to the cost of living crisis in the UK. I don't have a 3D printer either, so I'd have to hope and pray the price doesn't inflate further.

One thing nobody seems to mention is the movies and shows these days are horrible. In particular comic book movies, which is such a huge percentage of statue collectables. Even if people are after the non movie statues or classic varaints, its still tarnished by the failure of the family orientated style of the Marvel/Disney movies or the failure of DCEU & Star Wars, etc. Put inflation on top of that, as well as a global recession. Then of course nobody wants to get them anymore. They'll just watch youtube vids of what they look like.

Great video GEM. Right on all points. Price points, shipping costs and the oversaturation of the same 9-10 characters are driving this hobby straight off a cliff. Many collectors have already turned their attention and wallets elsewhere. For me and my collection, I see the end coming. I have just enough display space for one more 1:4 scale and one maybe two more 1:3 scale. Which I anticipate will be from LBS. At that point, I will have no more display space for statues or storage space for the boxes. It will be a sad day, but it is inevitable. That day will come for ALL of us collectors. Not a question of "IF", but rather a question of "WHEN". And when it's here, what do we do? I guess there will be two choices... A- start selling off some old pieces to make room for new pieces, regardless of the sale price, or "B" make the difficult decision to simply admire new pieces from afar.

I almost bought my first terminator and first ever statue from sideshow made by DSC. It was the T-800 on his motorcycle and the description said it came with a signed COA by Arnold Schwarzenegger so I was psyched. I was at my buddies house about to buy it and he asked me if I ever watched a review on it and realized I hadn’t so him and I looked one up that night. We were watching the review and come to find out that half the reason I was going to buy the statue, the signed coa, was not hand signed it was a printed on signature. Sideshow even advertises it still with the description “signed by the terminator himself Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

A buddy of mine just got into it whos done very well in real estate and is an investor. Hes a young bachelor, no kids or wife. He has bought the statues as visual ornaments to display.
He has only bought quality 1/4 & 1/3 scale characters that he likes to keep forever, and will only buy that size. Those only two characters are his favorites. He avoids sideshow due to hollow statues. His pieces he has found deals on even pre orders direct free shipping. He definitely bought into it at a great time and is doing it the right way to buy them quality to keep forever

Ive been in the statue collecting game since 2018, i love the hobby, but throughout the years ive become more picky, mostly because of space and pricing issues, but still trying to make room for new future pieces.
For me, my process going forward is also, i will keep what i own and i wont sell ever, so i will just enjoy and feel lucky that i have what i have.

I have only a few statues and the primary reasons are: 1. Space- Them pretty 1/6 statues take up a fair amount of room. 2. Cost- If I'm going to drop $600-800 for a statue, I better love the statue because that's the cost of medium to big key comic. 3. I've held myself back from even looking at what's coming out or what's available on the secondary market just to focus on comics.

It's slowly dying. If inflation prices, shipping and import fees/tax continues to rise... I don’t see buying statues lasting in the future. And I say this as someone from the UK 🇬🇧 who has to pay astronomical amounts for pieces to be shipped, including import, etc.
This is why I'm being very selective buying certain statues. My collection is almost complete. A few more pieces, and I'm truly done.

Lol...I bought a 1:6 scale XM Batman Rebirth today after notification of availability from Speculative Fiction. Also got a 1:10 Iron Studios Batman on Batsignal after Sideshow notified of availability. Smaller statues with small "they will go through the trap into the attic" boxes, lol, but they still provide a measure of the collecting need, I guess. 😮
The XM Batman, like the Hal Jordan Rebirth, will be smaller than the Tweeterhead 1:6s and, once their Batman arrives, the XM may have to depart. 😢

I knew this was going to happen. I said around 2017 that Sideshow had about a 10 year life line. Inflations a bitch and the market is flooded. Hot toys is in trouble too. The new marvel movies aren’t great so those toys aren’t going to sell like before. Also before people would buy a statue as soon as it dropped because they were trying to get all the X-Men or all the Justice League. Now I don’t really need anything and without actually seeing them in person at SDCC I don’t really want anything. Seeing them in person was a huge selling point. Also the OG collectors are out of space or money and the Hobby isn’t getting new fans because of the cost now. If the prices were this high when I started I wouldn’t have gone in.

Just to many companies pumping out statues these days, so it’s killing resale. As far as prices on new pieces, prices go up on everything if people are buying bottom line. So as long as people line up to buy, prices will rise like with everything. It shows the economy is strong. Don’t believe media lies about the economy. Just my opinion 💎 I like what you do.

    1) space - the terrible trend of ever bigger and elaborate bases is out of hand. Now you can hardly find a 1:4 that fits in a 24 inch height cabinet.
    2) sideshow used to charge $10-40 for shipping, now it’s $50-150, you always have to add $100-250 to the msrp just for shipping and tax, so I stopped buying from sideshow
    3) the market is so saturated, used to be you got 1 Ironman from sideshow every 2-3 years and it’s an event, now dozen of companies + even more non licensed customs are being made for every character at all scales.
But mostly for me it’s space, there is only so many 25-30 inch statues one can fit..and I am not even looking pass 1:4

Yo gem, great video I'm not a statue collector (have a couple) and I'm more of an anime scale collector (usually 1/7 to 1/4) and a lot of what you're talking about is prevalent in our game too.
It's just expensive even with how much the yen's buying power has dropped, money here in the USA is just on a tight leash right now for most people and they're saving for a recession, shipping charges have skyrocketed, space is limited, the aftermarket is tough, and pre-ordering has become pointless because most of these pieces just get re-printed or get discounted not even a month after they're released so the people that pre-ordered got punished for doing so.
Y'all should keep in mind that these figures and statues aren't limited experiences, sure you might have to pay up in the aftermarket or maybe you won't be able to find it later down the road, but the money is better spent on doing something like traveling while you're young and healthy, or if you're looking to invest there are safer and more beneficial options. That being said I'm gonna stay collecting but I'm just much more selective right now until we're in better times as a country and as a world.
Better times are coming baby, keep your heads up guys, whoever's reading this I hope something good happens to you today 💪

I buy a ton of Anime statues each month but there are so many companies saturating the market its like limited game companies, they are everywhere. I settled down and found some ground with iron studios 1/10th scale, just collecting up some x-men. There is so much temptation with all the statues going on sale some down to 30 to 60 dollars, down from 200+ no joke, but I now bought a storage unit just to fit all the new stuff coming in. As for larger scale figures I used to buy maybe 8-10 a year but besides space issues, they have become so expensive i cant continue even if i wanted. I noticed ebay prices with statues are really going down on certain items that used to be expensive on the resale market, especially statues from many years ago.

Once you go 1/3rd you can never go back to the smaller pieces. I remember when I first found this hobby, I spent $12000 right off the bat on 7 statues. Crazy. Definitely not doing that these days and you just can't sell anything now without taking a huge hit. Money is too tight and prices (particularly shipping) have put a kibosh on buying just anything. My last couple of Prime 1 pieces really hurt me with the shipping and customs duties. Won't be doing that again anytime soon.

One of the biggest mistakes collectors make is buying a statue not because they like it. Instead they will buy the statue just to sell it and make money off it. If you are doing that, then this hobby is not for you. It just pointless if you are already thinking about selling a statue you haven't even bought yet.

For me, the example of why I avoid it is the example of Iron Studios… every video I see on the 1/10 Jurassic Park Explorers Dino breakout are damaged. I don’t want to spend thousands and still have a restoration on my hands. That being said, I have seen some amazing collections that I do envy. I hope that the hobby continues for those that have a passion for it.

The prices are too high. Wherever I buy, I pay high shipping. For example, for a big statue like XM Soundwave, I pay 600 USD, then I pay 25% tax on the price plus shipping. Later, I can’t sell it on the entire market in Norway ever again. It’s sad, but it is what it is. The space is also a big problem because of the boxes.

It is, the last purchase I had was 2 years ago. The prices have gotten out of hand. Also, it helped that the MCU has been putting out garbage films, with people losing interest in comic book franchises, it also hurt the demand for the hobby. Usually, newcomers are the ones who are willing to shell out more because of FOMO. Also, some people have gotten over the phase and started new hobbies that are more affordable. For me it's mechanical keyboards, flatbox hitbox controllers

I find this topic interesting coming from the McFarlane Digital space they recently allowed one of their Dragons, the Eternal Dragon, to be downloaded and printed at home. I seen on X someone 3d print it in fact. I find this fascinating that a big toy company like McFarlane will allow the file to be downloaded. WIll it eat away at their physical toy series? IDK. Do other big IP/toy companies allow this or just non-official STL files can be bought typically?

Costs are crazy. I don’t understand why companies don’t offer better payment plans. If a statue takes 18 months to make, make a 18 month payment plan. Reduce it each month as it gets closer to release. If I was making less than $100 payments in each preorder I would quadruple my preorders.
