    Today I live in Canada but I was part of the first set of Afritonas. I played as a lone trumpeter in the horns section. I recorded Ajagun Ere. I was at the launching in 1990. Egbon Segun Awe was a great boss. Taught me a lot. Good man. But we didn't part ways very well. Still a great man

    This interview is as interesting as some of the revelations therein. I have read all the comments made and as such decided to see if I would get anymore information regarding some of the things said by Segun Awe online so that I can have a decently balanced view in terms of my review of the interview. I therefore searched online and actually found out that Ebenezer Obey did an interview a few years back on this issue - His fallout with Segun Awe.
    Aptly, Segun Awe is right in his account on the reason why he had to leave the Ebenezer Obey band. As stated it was mainly because of remuneration issues which Obey himself acknowledged in his own interview but there was also a general perception from Baba Obey’s point of view that Segun was simply becoming a destabilising factor within & without the band. So, he had to let him go!!!
    The quarrel lasted for 40yrs. Yanju Adegbite & others formed a reconciliation committee & with Segun Awe the issues that caused the grievance were amicably resolved. This meeting happened in 2019 at Obey’s county home in Abeokuta.
    Having stated the above, it does not mean that Segun in his interview has not exaggerated some of the events or perhaps misconstrued some of the actions or inaction of his principal who is Obey in this instance.
    The comment about KSA cannot be taken seriously as this is merely hearsay - third party information. Segun did not have any direct conversation with KSA on the issue of his then released album.
    Nonetheless, it is fair to say that even at the time Segun thought he could topple both Obey & KSA musically, I dare say that they have already been superbly established in the music world not just in Nigeria but World wide. KSA at that time was already nominated for Grammies & was being signed on Mango records a feat no other Nigerian artiste had achieved as at that time. Indeed Segun Awe is talented but it would seem to me that rather than some of the innocuous reasons stated his ego and self efficacy got the better of him. The take away for me from thé interview as with many others that Nigbati TV have done with other unsung Juju hero’s is that aside from the sheer raw talent that mega stars: Obey & KSA had, they had the special grace of God on their side. It shows what they went through to become established household names. I, sincerely wish Segun Awe all the very best and who knows he could still go on to be the next great Juju King. Thanks for reading!

    • @gbadeboabayomi9241
      @gbadeboabayomi9241 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OOlasokan First of all, that line is an excerpt from the words of @Bolaji Aborishade, which I agreed to.
      From Segun Awe's narration, he said he questioned Baba Obey why he should be having meetings with the old band boys separately, and that none of them contributed more to the band that he did...,here I think this is so disrespectful to those old babas like Vasco Dagama, Samson Ogunlade etc. At another point, he was just tearing down the work of his predecessor...like...."Monday John kan ma fin guitar korin ni"...like nothing special...I mean...Monday John..with his wealth of experience...this guy played in board members etc...Overconfidence kills....he said Chief commander didn't want his album to be released bla...bla...and Sunny Ade too acknowledged that his Album would have been a serious threat to theirs....I mean...what's he saying...After Obey & Sunny...the closest to these two are Prince Adekunle....Dele Abiodun...Empror Pick Peters...Segun Adewale and SSP...he's not thinking of competing with those ones...but pitching himself against Obey and Sunny.
      In conclusion, I think he stepped on many toes in that Obey's band...his problem may not be Obey...because he said the man liked him when they first started...and probably the special treatment he was getting from Obey evoked jealousy among others, especially the old band members. According to the grapevine, band members those days were fetish. Try to watch Baba Simoni Ayelabowo's interview and listen to how he paid accolade to the then band captain , Baba Samson Ogunlade ( who was also the president of Ayinla Omowura Fans' club at some point during his life time). Segun Awe also cited an instance of the rumor of Monday John making attempt on his life...

  • @luomo01
    @luomo01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I agree that this man told his own truth which I appreciate but I feel there are many loopholes in the story.Why will Commander order his record not to be sold?He wasn't even a threat to commander.And why didn't commander stop other band boys who left from selling their records too. At least Yomi Taiwo a former band member formed a band and got Obey's blessings.Its only fair that we should not be economical with the truth and when people always try to paint every story to their advantage, I do not feel comfortable at all because we are all human and no one is infallible.On the issue of him been the best guitarist to play for Obey I also disagree cos rating his works with Paul Tao.I will always pick Tao ahead of him.Just my own personal submission though.

    From all indications, it is clear Segun Awe is talented but is also vindictive and not willing to take responsibility for his actions. Most of what he said about his Boss and Sunny Ade have been confirmed false and I remembered he recently went back to apologise to Obey. He disrespected a talent like Monday John and does not want to agree Paul Tao, who took over when unceremoniously left Inter Reformers Band. He edited out many truth and aso contradicted himself in this interview. Ejire was mild with him. He will falter under a lie detectors.
    He even over estimated his abilities. I had a personal chat with him some 10 years ago and I told him some basic truth which he seemed to appreciate. I love his "My Survival " album but he was rebel leader in inter-reformers Band. If he could patronise baba alawo for his stolen money, he could as well do same for someone he was angry with then.

It was a proven fact that a lot of your stars prevented ppl they see as threats in whatever and every way or form. Emperor Pick Peters, Segun Awe, Micho Ade, etc were unfortunately part of this group. It is a sad reality. Many stars’ career didn’t see the light of day cos your favs went within all available realms to stop 🛑 and end their careers. May God forgive them all.

    i believe situations like the situation he encountered while trying to leave chief commander's band is part of what killed juju music, the big artistes made it difficult for the new ones to emerge, their band members creativity were stifled so they wont go independent. In Alhaji Timmy's interview he spoke about how he couldn't publicly work with other artistes even though he was no more a member of KSA's band.

      As humans we can't see beyond the physical, the fact that someone has a church does not mean he is perfect. Chief Obey is a good man but that does not mean he's infallible, only God is perfect. For example, sinachi's husband is a pastor, but would you know he was beating his wife until the last beating that sent the woman to the great beyond? Also when it comes to business, people can go to any length to destroy any form of rivalry. Generally musicians don't like their band members to be independent or become greater than them

    His talent is actually more on supporting roles and he would have been the leader of the band now.

    We now know the reason the Fuji genre has multiple talents today. The Juju leading musicians out of greed and selfishness retarded the growth of upcoming musicians. Unfortunately, the juju music will die with them. Mr.Fuji, Barrister omo Balogun, may his soul rest in peace. He grew the music and supported upcoming fuji musicians room to succeed.

      what has fuji offered the world? cheap, street music. Juju is not all comers affair, it is strictly talent based. Is RNB dead because of the rise of HIP-HOP? The former is talent based and the latter does not require grit.

      Being a leader, it takes some hard decisions to birth a vision, which might be seen as selfish or wicked to outsiders. The leader is the vision maker and followers owe the leader consistent loyalty- until such is ready to move on. I enjoyed learning of all these chaotic moments that gave birth to the most sublime and luxurious sounds ever. It may sound wicked but remember, Segun Awe was so talented under Obey, but when he left, his skill was still intact, but impact was not felt as much anymore. At the end of the day, education matters. Band members should have a contract that will protect their interests. Most bandmembers have been left out of the reward of their labors. In a musical style like juju music, the beauty of the music is in the intangibles that can only be expressed through sustained moments of camaraderie.

    All them band leaders in Nigeria treat their band boys like s****t,Even him uncle Segun Awe isn't different, No exceptions,they all have this crazy syndrome of insecurity.How on earth you treat band boys with great potentials like dogs and have the enffrontery to threaten them not to leave your band, i dont get it.Uncle Segun had opportunities inspite of his ordeal with Chief Ebenezer Obey,but he was so big headed, greedy and very fetish at some point in his life, I hope he has changed from his old ways.Nobody is a Saint. Let us give some level of kudos to Ebenezer Obey, because among those big act who rock juju music in the 70s 80s and 90s Obey is the only juju musician whose Some of his band boys rose to the level of a successful band leaders.The likes of Yk Ajao,Sir Shina Peters,Dayo Kujore, Olu Fajemirokun,Alex Zitto,Segun Awe,Monday John,Folorunsho Peperente, took tutorage under Ebenezer Obey at some point in their lives.Can you say the same about King Sunny Ade?The answer is NO.You dere not copy Sunny Ade style of music let alone leaving his band to form you own band those days.The only juju musician who copied sunny ade style of music and got away with it is Admiral Dele Abiodun, Who up till date is regarded a Sunny Ade boy and he never exceeded that level.Many juju musician who tried to compete with Sunny Ade those day paid with their lives or their music career, Handsome Wale Abiodun lost his life,Ahuja Bello almost lost his life in a ghastly motor accident which eventually led to the lost of his legs and his music career,Ajib Mayor lost his life,Swing Pawpaw lost his life and Ade Olusayo,Micho Ade,Emperor Pick Peters and even Bob Aladeniyi had failed musical career.It was Sir Shina Peters who finally broke the jinx and that was because he banished himself from singing and playing the guitar on stage at same time.

    In all of this, all I can say is that uncle segun awe, was the architect of his own misfortune, concerning the not so good relationship between him and baba commander Ebenezer obey fabiyi
    1) you don't bite the finger that fed you: he wanting to go and create another band while still working with baba, is an example of biting the finger that fed him, if you want to disengage from an organization, there are rules and procedures that guides one to do that. An act which commands blessings from the God and the boss you work with. When you are exting a place don't bang the door, because you might need to use that same door again, exit with care.
    2) Respect those before you: in all he as been saying, he address baba just as he is addressing his age mate, in yoruba contextual terms, that is very wrong, even when an elder offends you, respectfully express your feelings.
    3) Be discreet in words and actions: Not all words are meant to be said, you call someone. Your boss or father in music 🎶, never put such one in a bad light settle things within and speak no ills about such people.
    He should let go of the past and face the future, meet baba before he passes and make amends if you have not done so sir, and let him pray for you. Remain blessed 🙌 in Jesus name 🙏.
